Bids Will Benefit Solid Rock
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
Buoyed by teamwork and substantial support from the community, Solid Rock Youth Ministries is preparing for one of its marquee events.
The nonprofit’s annual Auction & Dinner will be held Friday, March 27, at Wesley Church, 1104 Kirkwood Drive, Quarryville.
A silent auction will start at 4:30 p.m. Dinner will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m., and the live auction will begin at 7 p.m.
Children 5 years old and younger will be admitted at no charge. There is no fee for people who attend the auction without purchasing a dinner ticket.

The deadline to buy dinner tickets is Friday, March 20. To register, call 717-786-8007 or go to www .solidrockquarryville.com/auction.
The food will include ham, potatoes, green beans, applesauce, dinner rolls, drinks, and dessert.
“It’s a fun evening for fellowship, meeting new people, and supporting Solid Rock,” auction
coordinator Dana Nixon said. Donations for the auction may be made through March 20. Dana noted she will be happy to set up a meeting time and place to pick up contributions. Email

The event will be held Thursday, March 26, at the DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Hotel Lancaster, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.; dinner will start at 6 p.m. and will feature a sit-down, plated meal. Go to www.aroundthetable.org to register. The deadline is Saturday, March 7.

Theater Troupe “Promises” an Entertaining Production
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
A message mixed with humor. It’s the kind of production for which the Promise Players have become known.
The troupe will put on “Simon Says: The Rockin’ Trial of Simon Peter” on Thursday, March 12, through Sunday, March 15, and Thursday, March 19, through Sunday, March 22, at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster. Thursday and Friday performances will begin at 7:30 p.m., Saturday shows will start at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m., and Sunday shows will occur at 2:30 p.m.
Promise Players’ productions frequently sell out. Reservations are strongly encouraged. Seating is general admission on a firstcome, first-served basis and will be available at the door if there is space. Tickets are paid for at the door. Children under age 5 will be admitted for free. To make reservations, go to www.promise players.org or call the church office at 717-464-2050 on Mondays to Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Proceeds from the show will benefit Bible2School programs in Penn Manor, Lancaster city, and Manheim Township.
“Simon Peter is on trial, so it takes place in a courtroom,” said director Dorothy Smith, a Salunga resident who has been with Promise Players since 2012. “He’s on trial for claiming that Jesus is the Son of God, the prophesied Messiah, and they call witnesses in who had contact with Jesus. The witnesses come and testify to how they were (impacted) by Jesus.”

Advoz dinner and auction will be held March 26 at the DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Hotel Lancaster.

Solid Rock is seeking new items such as home -

made furniture, blankets, and home décor. “Those items usually do really well, and I feel like our community loves supporting small businesses too, and it gives the small businesses who have different items the chance to put their name out there,” said executive director Raeanne Nixon. “I believe that people do give them business down the road with that.”
Other products that will be up for bid include a week stay in Bethany Beach, Del.; tables; chairs; farm-fresh beef; homemade catered dinners; and a variety of baskets.
There will also be gift cards to local theaters, restaurants, golf courses, and bowling alleys.
“It’s a silent auction, and then we pick like 30 items and do a live auction with them at the end of the evening,” Raeanne said.
“I’m excited to see it,” said administrative assistant Avonlea Bitts. “I think there’s something really powerful about people coming together in order to support a group like this. It’s been great already for me to see how this team works together to impact the families in this community.”

The money generated will benefit Solid Rock’s programs. “The money goes to help run all of the operations,” Raeanne said. “It helps us to be able to continue to provide free programming for families.”
Solid Rock hosts students from kindergarten through 12th grade and holds activities at several local churches.
“Simply, we serve families in the Solanco area,” said youth director Josh Rotz, noting that for 28

Visitors look over silent auction items at last year’s Solid Rock fundraiser.
Solid Rock
years, Solid Rock has been focused on serving students and families in the community while meeting students’ physical and spiritual needs. “Being able to see families thrive is really our vision and mission, so being able to offer programs that allow students a safe space to come and be themselves and be loved and be heard is important to what we do (as well as) giving them opportunities to do things they wouldn’t have opportunities to do otherwise.”
Raeanne noted that she relies on a talented team to organize the auction and help run the Solid Rock’s programs. “We have Dana, who
(collects) all the auction items, and then she has a whole team of people,” she said. “We have a team of people taking care of the dinner part, and then we have people helping set up. It really takes a group of people putting this together, so we’re thankful for everyone.”
Solid Rock also counts on area residents. “The community comes together and supports Solid Rock,” Raeanne said. “It’s awesome. This is one of our big fundraising events. We’re really thankful for all of our sponsors and all of the people who are donating items. We have a great community in Solanco.”

Dewald Names New Funeral Director, Sets Seminar

Wilde is a 20-year licensed funeral director, a licensed insurance agent and a pre-need counselor. He grew up around the funeral business, and started working in funeral service at his family’s business at the age of 15.
Upon graduating from Lancaster Mennonite High School, Wilde joined Youth with a Mission (YWAM) for two years, serving in Texas; Madagascar; and Madison, Wis. After his time in YWAM, he enrolled in Northampton Community College’s funeral service program, becoming
a sixth-generation funeral director when he was licensed in 2006.
Wilde obtained a graduate degree in theology from the former Biblical Seminary and completed his postgraduate work at the University of Winchester, England, in the program “Death, Religion and Culture.”

Dewald Funeral & Cremation Services is located at 227 W. Fourth St., Quarryville. For more information or to register for the seminar, visit www.dewalds.com or call 717-786-3530.

Michael Miller (right), licensed funeral director and one of the company’s owners, welcomes Caleb Wilde.

Her husband, Philip, is the music director. The couple produced the same musical with a different group in 2009. “Compared to last year’s show that we did, ‘Muddled Memories,’ the music is easier,” Philip said. “Both the piano is easier and the singing is easier. So, compared to that, it seems much simpler, but there are a few places here and there that are challenging for the singers. There is dissonance, that is two notes that are real close together and make a crunchy sound that are tricky, but compared to last year, it’s easier music-wise.”
Dorothy added, “Probably one of the biggest challenges with the music is a good bit of it goes quite fast, so you really have to spit the words out quickly.”
Shawn Gollatz will be taking part in his fourth Promise Players production. “It’s my first
musical, so being a tenor is a bit challenging because four-part harmony is not natural,” said Gollatz, who is in the chorus, will portray John and James, and will sing a solo. “One of the things I learned, when you listen to a song, the melody that you hear sometimes isn’t necessarily what anybody actually sings. It’s just a collection of chords, and the way your voice works, you can only sing one note at a time, so you could pick one of those.”
Several members of the cast recently joined the group. “About half the cast is new to shows with Promise Players,” said Dorothy. “This is their first time to act with us and first time to be exposed to us for some of them, so that’s always kind of fun and exciting.”
Mamie Hilton, a teacher at Central Manor Elementary School, is one of the newcomers.
“My stepmother, Shonda Hilton, was auditioning because she plays piano with Dorothy, and so she said, ‘Do you want to try, too?’ And I said, ‘Sure, why not?’” Mamie said.
Mamie will portray Mary Magdalene. “I get to come on the stage at one point in scene 11, and then I get to speak to the judge and talk about my experience with Jesus,” she said. “Then I have a solo.”
One of stage manager Marty Raine’s tasks is collecting props for the show. “The stage manager is the director’s right-hand man,” the Strasburg Township resident said. “Dorothy, as the director, makes all the decisions. I’m the one who has to
remember and remind everyone when they forget. ... With a cast this big and with everything that’s going on, one of the challenges is just remembering it all. I have to keep track of 28 people and everything that 28 different people are doing.”
Guests can expect a typical, funny Promise Players performance. “There’s a lot of humor in it,” Dorothy said. “Promise Players in general likes to do humorous things oftentimes, but we always like to have a good, strong message. You get both the strong message of Jesus and His life and the miraculous things that He did but mixed with lots of humor.”

Advoz Auction

Items up for bid will include a weeklong stay at a cottage in Ecuador; a weekend at an Airbnb near Elizabethtown; works by local artists and themed baskets such as a reader’s basket donated by Advoz’s Restorative Justice Book Club, a Family Movie Night basket, and a Bird Lovers basket including two handmade birdhouses.
“We are a local organization, 501(c)(3) nonprofit, serving primarily Lancaster County with services in conflict resolution, mediation services, restorative justice services, and training,” executive director Krista Rittenhouse said. “One of the ways we describe it is helping people navigate through critical moments in their lives.”
She went on to list the variety of services Advoz provides. “We support folks through mediation, through divorce and custody mediation, which is a really tough transition for families to go through,” said Rittenhouse. “We can help find communication patterns that can have people advocate for what is most important to them. That’s one of the ways that we serve the community. Another way is through our restorative justice program for young people involved in the criminal legal system,”
She explained how that process works. “We receive referrals from juvenile justice for young folks who have gotten in trouble with the law, and we do the victim offender conferencing program,” said Rittenhouse. “We have conversations with the young person. We have conversations with the victim. If everyone agrees, we bring them together for a face-toface dialogue around what accountability means, how

do we make things right when we mess up, because the reality is we’re going to mess up as humans.”
She added that the group also trains clients. “We want people to have more skills to engage proactively in constructive conflict on their own as well,” Rittenhouse said.
Anyone who would like to avail themselves of Advoz’s services can go to www.advoz.org and click on the “Request Service” button at the top right corner of the page.
During the dinner, clients will provide anecdotal evidence of what Advoz can accomplish. “People should come to the auction if they want to support our work, and people should come to the auction if they are interested in hearing stories of reconciliation and healing,” Rittenhouse said. “I think that in a day and age where we have increased polarization and increased sensitivity across different ideologies and ways of living, we need to hear stories of folks that are connecting across differences. We need to hear stories of bridge-building. They help us to imagine new ways of being together, and our event is going to highlight stories from participants. ... I think that it will be a day of encouragement and good news that counteracts so much of the division that is present in our world.”
Rittenhouse is hopeful that hearing the accounts will encourage guests to keep contributing. “We do much of our work through volunteers,” she said. “If someone is interested in getting involved, this would be a great way to understand the work of our highly trained, community volunteers.”
