A Petition for a Pup

The Hess sisters have taken their case for getting a puppy to the highest reaches of the United States government.

A petition designed to convince their father, Trent, to add another canine to the family was recently sent to the White House, requesting the signature of President Trump.

“We have a dog, but she’s too big (for me),” said Ruth Hess, who was born with a rare blood disorder. “I have to take this medicine, and I think it would be nice if I had a dog.”

Ruth’s mother, Emily, noted that a nurse at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) informed Ruth, “If you make a petition, I’ll sign it.”

Ruth, who is 10 years old, wrote a petition and enlisted the help of her older sister, Caroline, 12, and younger sister, Heidi, 8, who is in teacher Christina Cylc’s life skills class at Quarryville Elementary School. “I think it’s pretty cool,” said Caroline, who, like Ruth, is homeschooled.

“Ruthie had the idea,” Cylc said.

School Vows to Help Young Students, Families

Catherine Hershey Schools for Early Learning (CHS) is not designed only to benefit young students.

The mission is to assist the entire family with a “two-generation approach,” said Jessica Bailey, the director of the CHS New Danville Center, which is slated to open this summer. It is primarily for students in the Solanco, Lampeter-Strasburg, and Penn Manor school districts. “Our program does identify school districts that we prioritize that are near to each site,” said Bailey. “And the goal is that families not just go to school or live in the area, but they could be getting an education in the area themselves or just working in the area to qualify for a program. Those are the three school districts that we focus on.”

An Open Painting Show exhibit, sponsored by the Quarryville Library Art Committee, will be featured in the C.X. Carlson Gallery at the library, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville. The opening reception will be held Saturday, March 28, from 1 to 3 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided. “The opening reception is open to the public,”

The New Danville Center, located at 393 Long Lane, Lancaster, is accepting applications. Catherine Hershey Schools are for students between the ages of 6 weeks old and 5 years old and operate year-round. Go to www.chslearn.org to register or for more information.

“We’re considered an early childhood education facility,” Bailey said, noting that the New Danville location is hoping to welcome 100 students from low-income or underresourced families. “We really look to support families to make sure that they are thriving when they leave our program. Our big goal and our big mission is to help

SINGING SPRING FOODS

“She brought it into school in Heidi’s folder and Heidi came out and said, ‘Dog and sign.’ So that’s where we went with it. We do community-based instruction over at Central (the nearby school district administration building), and we had everybody sign it over there. We even got (state Rep.) Bryan Cutler to sign it.”

The girls’ grandmother Terri Parmarter suggested Ruth send the petition to President Trump. Ruth did just that in mid-January and is

anxiously awaiting a response.

“I said, ‘If you can get the president to sign the petition, then I’ll get you a puppy,’” Trent promised.

Emily is happy her daughters are enjoying a learning experience. “I think it’s fantastic,” she said. “As a homeschool parent, one of our objectives is to get them to understand real-world assignments and things that are meaningful. When the idea was presented to write a letter to the president, and she had written a

rough draft, I said, ‘This is really a good start. Now let’s look at how we write a formal letter.’ Then she got to do that next piece of looking at how we address somebody formally and how we write in our best handwriting and created a nice letter. So, as a mom, as a homeschool mom, I thought it was a really neat assignment.”

More than 50 people had penned their John Hancock on the petition as of Feb. 3. Robert Brody, the family’s pastor at New Danville Mennonite Church, signed, and the bishops followed suit.

Ruth has decided she wants a Havanese if her wish is granted. “A nurse doing an IV was talking about a puppy, and he said, ‘I had a Havanese when I was a kid,’ and he told her about it, and then Ruth started looking at them and she said, ‘Oh, they’re very cute and small. Perfect for cuddling,’” Caroline recounted. “She keeps tabs on all the Havanese for sale and shows them to me daily. That’s our homework.”

Grocery Aisle

Ruth was born with thalassemia. “They had told us that there was a 50/50 chance that she might need blood transfusions at some point in her life,” Emily said. “About two years ago, that needed to happen. She couldn’t make it through a day without needing a three-hour nap, so she started getting blood transfusions. She goes every three weeks to CHOP for blood transfusions.”

Ruth was on an oral medication, but it was impacting her liver. “The only other choice that is available for her right now is an injection, and it is a medication that we mix for her,” Emily said, adding that Ruth hopes a puppy will help take her mind off the pain of the injections. “In her letter to the president, she said wanted the puppy to make her happy.”

The doctors stated that another dog could help the entire family navigate trying times. “On a personal note, one of the things that (CHOP) suggested was a distraction for something really challenging like this in your life,” Emily said. “It started off as just a fun distraction and then it kind of snowballed into something bigger. And it’s been fun.”

Trent acknowledged he will consider getting a dog even if President Trump doesn’t sign the petition. “There’s probably wiggle room, but I’m not committing to that,” he said. “If I say yes to that right now, obviously they would take that as a yes. I haven’t said that yet. We’ll see.”

the entire family. Not only do we provide that early childhood education and care for students during the day, but we’re also providing support for our families, (finding) resources for them to help families set goals, and to really support them to be in a position where they are making the most out of all that they can.”

No closing date for applications has been established. “We do work through our application process

here in the start of the new year,” Bailey said. “We’re accepting applications for our families, and we’d love to be able to see families all throughout our three districts applying. Once they fill out their application, we will be connecting with them and following through with the process until we’ve been able to determine the appropriate amount of students to be able to fill our building.”

Bailey stated that the application process is straightforward. “There’s an online registration where we would ask for some information that comes to our admissions department,” she said. “From there, we would reach out with phone calls and connections in person to be able to make sure we have the most up-to-date, most accurate information to be able to make the best decision for our families. Since we do have to make certain qualifications, we do make sure we really have those deep conversations with families to ensure our process is just.”

Catherine Hershey Schools is a nonprofit organization and a subsidiary of the Milton Hershey School. “That’s part of where we come from and the long line and legacy of the Hersheys and all that they created,” Bailey said. “A lot of people aren’t familiar with the fact that Milton Hershey owned a candy company here in Lancaster. That’s part of the reason we’ve opened in Dauphin County, and Lancaster is really to build on the heritage and the legacy that both Milton and Catherine left in those areas. It’s exciting to be able to do that.”

The New Danville location will be the fourth Catherine Hershey School and the first in Lancaster County with more to follow. “Currently we have three operational centers in Dauphin County,” said Bailey. “Our first to open was in Hershey, the second was in Harrisburg, and our third one opened just this year in Middletown. We have our first site in Lancaster, us here in New Danville, and then following us will be a site in Elizabethtown and a site in Lancaster city, hopefully by 2027.”

Bailey stated that Catherine Hershey Schools’ subject matter is a draw “We focus on a play-based curriculum,” she said. “Kids need play at this age, and we all hear in the education world how that trickle-down effect of development and skills has an effect on our youngest generation. We really focus on that play-based (curriculum), leaning into children’s interests and creating projects that are meaningful to them that they can explore throughout their time here.”

A key objective is preparing students for the rest of their schooling. “Our goal is to get them ready for kindergarten, and ‘ready’ for each child is a little bit different,” said Bailey. “Some children are ready and raring to go with more information, and some kiddos just need to learn how to exist in their own beautiful space. We have the opportunity to build and create that and really support the children individually and also make sure the families know how to support their children individually, which is really a key part too.”

said Chris Waite, who is the chairman of the committee. “We’re inviting everybody to come and see it.”

Judging will be done by someone who is not affiliated with the library. Awards will be announced at 2 p.m. Cash prizes will be presented in the following categories: nature, earthscape, humanity, and abstraction.

Professional or amateur painters age 16 and older can submit one or two paintings at the library on Saturday, March 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Works should be framed or mounted and ready to put on the wall and are expected to hang throughout the exhibit. Paintings must be appropriate for public viewing in a gallery that is also used for children’s programs.

The exhibit will be featured during regular library hours through Friday, May 1. Entries should be picked up Saturday, May 2, between noon and 3 p.m.

Email library@quarryvillelibrary .org for additional information.

“This is the second (open painting exhibit) we’ve had where we invited people to submit works and create a show,” said Mark Phillips, who is a retired Solanco art teacher and a member of the Quarryville Library Art Committee. “It gives people a chance to enter their work and to compete and at least to have them exhibited. Lancaster County seems to have a real interest in artwork on downtown Lancaster Gallery Row and so on. We are doing our little end-of-thecounty version of that.”

Art committee member Cinda Showalter plans to participate. “I think I’m going to submit two paintings,” she said. “I think it helps us to drive us to do better in our painting, so we can feel like we want to submit something.”

“This is a chance for local artists to display their work, and most of the time when we have an art show like what we have hanging in (the library) now, it’s an artist or two artists,” said art committee member Deborah Waite. “This is the only one that we’re doing this year where there are monetary prizes awarded.”

Chris noted that the Open Painting Show will also be beneficial for the Quarryville Library. “It’s to encourage the community that we serve, which is nine different townships and the borough, to be part of this and see what a community center we have here,” he said. “Some people haven’t ever been in here, and it draws people in and gives good exposure (to the library).”

The Carlson Gallery will also host an exhibit featuring works by the Octoraro Art Association, starting with an opening reception Saturday, May 16, from 1 to 3 p.m. and running through Friday, June 12.
