School Vows to Help Young Students, Families Catherine Hershey Schools for Early Learning (CHS) is not designed only to benefit young students. The mission is to assist the entire family with a “two-generation approach,” said Jessica Bailey, the director of the CHS New Danville Center, which is slated to open this summer. It is primarily for students in the Solanco, Lampeter-Strasburg, and Penn Manor school districts. “Our program does identify school districts that we prioritize that are near to each site,” said Bailey. “And the goal is that families not just go to school or live in the area, but they could be getting an education in the area themselves or just working in the area to qualify for a program. Those are the three school districts that we focus on.” The New Danville Center, located at 393 Long Lane, Lancaster, is accepting applications. Catherine Hershey Schools are for students between the ages of 6 weeks old and 5 years old and operate year-round. Go to www.chslearn.org to register or for more information. “We’re considered an early childhood education facility,” Bailey said, noting that the New Danville location is hoping to welcome 100 students from low-income or underresourced families. “ We really look to support families to make sure that they are thriving when they leave our program. Our big goal and our big mission is to help

he Hess sisters have taken their case for getting a puppy to the highest reaches of the United States government. A petition designed to convince their father, Trent, to add another canine to the family was recently sent to the White House, requesting the signature of President Trump. “We have a dog, but she’s too big (for me),” said Ruth Hess, who was born with a rare blood disorder. “I have to take this medicine, and I think it would be nice if I had a dog.” Ruth’s mother, Emily, noted that a nurse at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) informed Ruth, “If you make a petition, I’ll sign it.” Ruth, who is 10 years old, wrote a petition and enlisted the help of her older sister, Caroline, 12, and younger sister, Heidi, 8, who is in teacher Christina Cylc’s life skills class at Quarryville Elementary School. “I think it’s pretty cool,” said Caroline, who, like Ruth, is homeschooled. “Ruthie had the idea,” Cylc said.
