Solanco Seamstress Earns Ribbon at Farm Show
Bingo Will Raise Funds for Swift PTO

BY GEORGE DEIBEL
Following four and a half decades away, Jeanette Brower made a triumphant return to the Pennsylvania Farm Show.
The East Drumore Township resident sewed up a second-place finish out of 72 entries in the America 250 PA Apron Contest.
“I was very overwhelmed,” Jeanette said. “I knew that it was a long shot, because you are competing against 72 first-place ribbon aprons (from local fairs). That’s a lot. I felt like I had done a really good job, and I had a good product, but against 72 other first places, (coming in second) was a little overwhelming.”
The contest was sponsored by the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs (PSACF). Entries were due Jan. 7, and the judging occurred on Jan. 9. Jeanette attended the Farm Show on Jan. 11 to receive her ribbon and prize money.
“I grew up at the Farm Show. I was a farmer’s daughter,” Jeanette said. “We would go out every year, and I was also a Montgomery County Dairy Princess, so I have a huge history with the Farm Show.”
She had a long absence from the annual event. “My husband (Rich) didn’t enjoy the Farm Show as much as I did, so I hadn’t been there for 45 years,” Jeanette said. “My husband saw the (apron) competition in the Advertiser, and he told me about it. He said, ‘You

Dana Howard got much more than he requested, and he and the other board members of the Building Bridges Foundation are ecstatic about it.
Allow fellow board member Dave Kleintop to explain. “We have pasture here in Anderson Farm, and we had excess grass,” he said. “I have a connection with Hartland Farms (in Quarryville).”
Hartland Farms owner Ben Flahart donated four young steers to Building Bridges that weigh about 375 pounds each. Dave Anderson, the owner of Anderson Farm, bought six more for a total of 10.

Opportunities abound at the third annual Swift Middle School Designer Bag Bingo.
There will be chances for visitors to win bags originated by some of the most renowned purse-makers, while also providing Swift students with possibilities to expand their knowledge. The event will be held Saturday, Feb. 21, in the Swift Middle School cafeteria, 1866 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville.
Doors will open at 11 a.m. for people to browse the prizes and enjoy food from the concession stand before bingo gets underway. There will be an early bird game at 12:15 p.m., and the regular 20 games of bingo will start at 1 p.m. Following those, there will be a special game, and the event will end with a blackout bingo game.
Each ticket will include books of three vertical cards for 20 different games. Additional cards will be available for purchase.
Winners will garner bags designed by Kate Spade, Michael Kors, Vera Bradley, and Dooney & Bourke.
Guests can also buy a chance to win gift baskets and gift cards, which were donated by local businesses. “We have more than 40 baskets,” said Swift sixth-grade teacher Susan Dawson, who is helping organize

Museum to Offer Tour Guide

“The PTO uses the funds to provide opportunities for students to grow to their fullest potential,” said Dawson. “(The event) allows us to offer more learning experiences in and out of the classroom. It’s a really good event for us.”
Dawson said that Designer Bag Bingo will enable the school to have an additional two field trips for every student and more assemblies and special events throughout the school year. In the past, sixth-graders have traveled to Fulton Theatre and Longwood Gardens, seventh-graders have gone to a museum and Indian Echo Caverns, and eighth-graders have visited the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre and the Lancaster Stormers’
“A lot of sixth-grade students really loved going to Longwood Gardens and to a play at the Fulton,” Dawson said. “They also liked seeing the architecture. The kids were in awe. It’s neat to see we can provide these opportunities for students. It’s really rewarding.”
Students from the school’s leadership council and National Junior Honor Society will assist with Designer Bag Bingo. “It’s a family event,” Dawson said. “A lot of parents bring their children. It’s a great opportunity to give back to the Swift community and allow kids opportunities they would not have had if not for the bingo event.”

Designated driver tickets will be sold at the event. “It’s for people who want to get someone safely home or just come in and enjoy some non-alcoholic beverages throughout the course of the evening,” Myers said.
There will also be food trucks on-site, with a list available on the website.

The event will be held in Rolling Stock Hall, which features historic locomotives and railroad cars.
“It’s a good opportunity to come out and see the building while enjoying some samples of beer from local craft brewers,” Myers said. “There’s plenty of space to spread out, engage with friends, and talk to the brewers on their process about their different beers. It’s just a really fun night.”
The site helps make the happening unique. “I always like the building in the nighttime or after

Library to Host Presentation Seamstress
The Quarryville Library Center, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville, will host a presentation from representatives of Lancaster Stands Up on the development of large-scale data centers and their potential local impacts on Thursday, Feb. 19, from 6 to 7 p.m.
Using case studies from data center developments in other regions of the United States, the session will outline the experience of some nearby communities.
The presentation will examine proposed commitments by data center developers, anticipated infrastructure demands, and how these projects may be managed by out-of-state or non-local investors. It will also address potential cost implications for residents and will focus in part on pending legislation.

have to enter.’ And I said, ‘OK, I’ll enter, but if I win, you’re going to the Farm Show.’ He agreed to that, thinking that it was such a long shot that it would never happen.”
The Browers went with Jeanette’s sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Karen and Dave Carter. “It was fun to be able to experience it together, but it has changed a lot,” said Jeanette.
Jeanette stated that she is grateful for Farm Women Society 31, which sponsored the prize money
at the Solanco Fair, and for the Pennsylvania State Grange, the suppliers of prize money at the Farm Show.
Apron contest participants were required to use the colors red, white, or blue or a combination and make the apron in 2025.
“When I do something of that nature, the first thing I do is pray and ask God to show me what it is He would like me to do,” Jeanette said. “I got several designs in my head, and I just drew them up, and I just landed

on the one I used.”
She used her embroidery machine to inscribe “God” on the top of the apron, “country” on the second line, and “cooking” below that. “Our nation was founded on God,” said Jeanette. “Our country is of very high importance. I was doing (a list of) the priorities: God, country, cooking. That was my inspiration behind it.”
The apron took a total of 15 hours to make. “I have a machine that’s called an overlock-coverlock,” Jeanette said. “I had just gotten it, and I had some training on how to use it. One of the stitches that they taught me was what’s called a flat felt stitch. You sew the two pieces of fabric together, and then you pull them apart, and you’re left with a bunch of little lines.
I took ribbon and wove it in between the lines, and I did that in between each of the pieces that I had done. I drew my lines where I wanted it cut apart and then cut it all apart. I did what I needed to do to each piece and then started putting it all back together again. It was like one big puzzle.” She noted that she enjoys each part of the process. “I like being able to be creative,” said Jeanette, who has also taught sewing to local 4-H Club members. “I can take a pattern. I can make it whatever I want it to be, or sometimes I even make my own patterns.” Jeanette became enthralled with sewing at a young age. “My grandmom (Grace Kolb) taught me when I was in my early teens, and I’ve been sewing ever since,” she said.

Building Bridges from
“They brought them (to Building Bridges) back in April, and we fed them on the pasture until January to about 1,250 pounds average,” said Kleintop, who lives in Peach Bottom.
“They’re not heavy enough to go to market yet,” Kleintop said. “They need to be about 1,500 pounds. Ben came and picked them up and took him down to his feed lot in Quarryville, and he’s going to (bring them up) to 1,500 pounds. He’s going to charge us a nominal fee to feed them, and then when he sells the steers at 1,500 pounds, he’s going to pay us for the value of the steers minus the feed that he put into them. Four sales will be a 100% donation, and the other six will be the balance of what Dave (Anderson) paid for and what the market value is minus the feed, so we’ll have a substantial donation.”
In the spring of 2026, Flahart is going to bring 16 more young stock to Building Bridges and the organization and the farm will repeat the process.
Howard joked, “The whole thing started because all I wanted was some hamburger. I figured if we raised one cow on the property, I could get some hamburger for the (Vets’) Café. Now we’re going to have a cattle drive going here pretty soon.”
Building Bridges Foundation at Anderson Farm is located at 230 Indian Hill Road, Conestoga. It is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the mission of providing support for veterans in the community. “We do that two ways,” said Joe Campbell, Building Bridges’ director of operations. “We have an equine therapy program for veterans with PTSD and traumatic brain
injuries and other psychosocial issues, and that involves individual kinds of therapy.”
Anderson, a veteran who owns Anderson Farm, donated the land for Building Bridges about 10 years ago. “For a variety of reasons, he wanted to open up specifically the equine therapy program,” said Campbell, who lives in Manheim Township. “We have five thoroughbreds. They’re retired racehorses. All the therapy is at no charge to the veterans. The equine therapy program involves a series of weekly visits with a person who’s trained in equine therapy, and through their techniques they help veterans deal with the stressors that they have in their life.”
Building Bridges is also home to the Vets’ Café, which is open Thursdays from 8 a.m. to noon. “The Vets’ Café started when one of the vets suggested a weekly get-together, and it’s grown from five people to where we often see anywhere between 65 and 90 people a week now,” Howard said. “(Veterans) can come here and have free coffee, doughnuts, and once a month we do a breakfast, and it’s at no charge to them.”
The Vets’ Café has become an important part of Building Bridges. “It is not technically therapy, but the camaraderie and sense of belonging that exists here is very powerful, and we have new people coming in almost every week to visit with us,” Campbell said.
Howard stated that people want to be where everybody knows your name. “A lot of our vets are isolated,” he said. “It’s loneliness and isolation.
Women’s Club Posts Meeting
The Lancaster Christian Women’s Club will hold a “Discover the You Inside of You” buffet luncheon meeting at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 4, at Casa di Fiori at The Inn at Leola Village, 38 Deborah Drive, Leola. Doors will open at 11 a.m.
The speaker will be Janis Price, who will share “Power of Personality,” a fun and informative look

From that standpoint, I think we do a stellar job here. We are in the process of getting another equine therapist, so we can do that one-on-one counseling that has been life changing for many, many people here.”
Campbell added, “We’re getting more younger veterans, and that’s one of the missions that we have is to expand this so that the people who were in Iraq and Afghanistan can use the facilities here. We are also what’s known as the community access point through the Veterans Affairs. There are about a 1,000 of these throughout the country, and this is something that the Veterans Affairs started doing 15 or 20 years ago to get into the community rather than being just a big hospital 40 miles away from here. We’ve contracted with them, and they have representatives here every Thursday as well.”
For more information, go to www.buildingbridges foundation.org. “This has grown from something small,” said Campbell. “It’s still intimate. It’s still very personal. It’s still very community-based, but things like raising this beef and having a number of other fundraisers that we do throughout the year (are important). It’s getting
