PVIS Welcomes Veterans BY ANN MEAD ASH

“I am glad we are back in person, and a lot of our veterans are glad to be back too,” said Pequea Valley Intermediate School (PVIS) administrator Bill Darras. In 2020, the PVIS Veterans Day appreciation event was held virtually, but this year, nearly 20 local veterans visited the school on Nov. 11 for a series of activities, including a luncheon, a musical presentation, and a chance to tell their stories. PVIS Student Council members met with veterans in the school lobby and escorted them to a luncheon and conversation in the library. Darras had reached out to veterans in the community in a variety of ways, including asking students to invite family members. “One veteran (who is with us here) served 22 years in the Navy,” noted Darras, who added that with the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine veterans present, a total of 106 years of service was represented.

Following the luncheon, the students escorted the veterans to the gymnasium for an assembly, which included the national anthem played by the Brave Sounds concert band and “God Bless America” sung by faculty member Alicia Trescavage. Darras then welcomed the gathering and introduced teacher Taylor Croft, who spoke about the history of Veterans Day and noted that the occasion honors veterans who gave selflessly. “We can scarcely imagine their sacrifices,” Croft said. “We owe these veterans a tremendous debt of gratitude.” Following Croft’s speech, Student Council president Isabella Biddle spoke briefly, asking each veteran to stand as she introduced him or her including the branch of service and number of years each served. “To me, Veterans Day is about honoring all the veterans who have served our country. Without them, we would not be where we are today,” she said.

As they travel with the characters from the Bible, participants will witness the walk to Bethlehem, where they will experience the disappointment of finding there is no room at the inn. The journey will also take attendees to a marketplace, where they may spend a shekel to purchase raisins or crackers, and then to a field, where they will gather with shepherds to hear the angels announce Christ’s birth. Finally, visitors will arrive at a stable to see the Christ child in the manger. The final stop is now a live presentation that takes place in the palace of one of the wise men. Fox noted that about 3,000 people attended the 2020

Kalinowski was able to bring back Rockette-style pieces, which were not possible last year, for songs such as “Jingle Bell Rock,” “Cool Yule,” “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” and “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers.” Pieces inspired by “The Nutcracker” will include “Waltz of the Flowers” and “Arabian Dance.” Lyrical pieces will be set to hymns such as “O Holy Night” and “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” and fun dances will be performed to well-known tunes of the season, such as “Santa Baby,” “My Only Wish (This Year),” and music from “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” Past shows have raised more than $30,000. “Cumulatively, over the past 16 years, we’ve raised over $380,000,” said Kalinowski, who is hoping to reach a milestone with this show, noting that “$400,000 would be pretty wonderful.” Tickets may be purchased by emailing Cojo_Wishes@ LititzAcademyofDance.com. group, which boasts about 200 members who have a general interest in working with metal. “(That interest is) mainly blacksmithing or forging, but we also have some people who do tinsmithing, silversmithing, general fabricating, and other disciplines within the umbrella of metalwork,” Shultz said. The group holds regular meetings, all of which are open to the public. Meetings are often held at a member’s shop or historic blacksmith shop and include demonstrations of certain skills or projects. The gallery meeting, which is always held in December, is traditionally located in Paradise. “We call it our gallery meeting because it is a little different than the rest of our meetings,” said Shultz, who noted that the meeting is a showcase of metal-related items. “Members bring in examples of what they worked on throughout the year or collections they might have of antique tools or things they want to sell.” Another highlight of the event is the Ironmaster of the Day competition. “Any member can make an item designated for that competition,” explained Shultz, who said

It will be a fun holiday time.” In addition to snacks and refreshments that will be available at the fire house, the Tri-County Barbecue food truck will be stationed outside. Visitors will also have an opportunity to win gift baskets, and Santa Claus will be on hand and available for photos.

Proceeds from the event will help support the Lions Club’s community projects, such as the Pequea Valley High School’s Career Occupational Relevant Education (C.O.R.E.) Program, which teaches trades to students and promotes craftsmanship. “This is the second time the club is hosting a bazaar. We skipped 2020 because of COVID,” Wenrich said, noting that information will be provided at the event for those interested in joining the Lions Club. “The Lions Club is composed of people who come together to network and to serve the community. Participants will learn about the various ways animals survive winter’s freezing temperatures. A naturalist will lead a walk to find signs of animals still active during the winter. Homeschool Wednesday: Monarch Migration will take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 8. The winter homeschool class for students ages 8 to 12 will study monarch migration. Participants should wear old clothing and plan for indoor and outdoor activity. Children under age 8 may attend if accompanying older siblings.

Jump Into STEM: Painting With Nature, for 3- to 5-yearolds, has been set for Thursday, Dec. 9, from 10 to 11 a.m. Preschool scientists will learn about different parts of evergreen plants, enjoy an interactive presentation, and experiment with using various evergreens as paintbrushes. grade student Cam Frank also sang a duet of “In Flanders Fields” set to music. Darras reported that after the assembly, veterans accompanied students to classrooms where veterans spoke on their service and answered questions. Following that interaction, students went to the cafeteria to assemble gift baskets and write thank you cards to the veterans. Army vehicles were parked in the school parking lot for the veterans to see before leaving.

Penn State Extension will offer an in-person groupbased strength training program for adults age 40 and older. LIFT (Lifelong Improvements through Fitness Together) will take place in Lancaster and Quarryville from Tuesday, Jan. 4, to Thursday, Feb. 24, 2022. Snow dates will be determined in March, if necessary. A free informational meeting will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 7, from 9 to 10 a.m. in the Training Room at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.
