athan Bankert, who is co-directing the Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) fall show with Mindy L app, always wanted to do a Christmas show, but the theatrical schedule never seemed to accommodate that dream. However, for this Christmas, Bankert will get his wish. “This is our last year in this school building,” explained Bankert, referencing the new high school and intermediate school building currently under constr uction. “I t ’s our last musical on this stage, and I have always wanted to do a holiday show.” Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas” will be staged at PVHS, 4033 E. Although Leacock Presbyterian Church has held a Christmas bazaar for a number of years, the 2024 event will be a little different. “This year, we are inviting vendors into the space,” said organizer Angela Killian. In the past, any items for sale at the event were made or donated by church members. The bazaar returned in 2023 after a hiatus due to COVID-19 restrictions. For 2024, crafters, bakers, and other vendors were offered tables in exchange for a donated amount. The annual Leacock Presbyterian
According to Barb Martin, associate director of mission advancement at Garden Spot Village (GSV), the annual GSV Christmas market is a popular attraction. “It’s very well attended,” shared Martin, who noted that 1,000 to 1,500 visitors enjoy the shopping and activities associated with the celebration. This year’s Village Christmas Market, which will be held on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., will turn the Village Square and adjacent areas at 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland,

into a holiday-themed event featuring Mrs. Claus, food, shopping, and train room displays. To appeal to young attendees, organizers have chosen to focus on the heart of the season, with live hourly readings of “A Charlie Brown Christmas” on the lower level of the Village Square, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Cookie decorating for children featuring ornamental cookies resembling Peanuts characters will begin at 10 a.m. The Train Room, where volunteers have constructed a 1,837-square-foot display of HO- and O-gauge trains on a miniature landscape, will be open to visitors from 1:30 to 4 p.m.

show is heavy with singing and dancing. Bankert knew his cast of 45 had the talent to perform the music well. Waters noted how different the music is from the last PVHS musical, which was “Newsies.” “It’s crooner style and the harmonies are really close, and there are those crunchy jazz chords,” said Bankert, adding, “The singers are embracing the (Irving) Berlin sound.” “I love the music,” stated Heverin. “I always loved listening to Rosemary Clooney, so to be able to play (her) role and sing her songs is so much fun to me.” While the cast members have readily taken on the difficulty of the singing style, the dancing - which Bankert said is required in at least half of the musical numbers - has presented more of a challenge. He lauded choreographer Katie Adams for her dedication to the process and complimented the students on their efforts. “These kids work extra hard to hone their skills in that area. I’m very proud of them,”
