hat started nine years ago has turned into a tradition at Pequea Valley. The school district’s “Building Braves” program, a collaborative effort with The Factory Ministries, will hold its annual Read Under the Lights night at the Pequea Valley athletic stadium, 4033 E. Newport Road, Kinzers, on Tuesday, Oct. 6, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The event allows Pequea Valley

athletic teams and clubs to read books to young learners from the district, all while being under the lights on the stadium turf. “The goal of it was to get our older learners, our high school learners, involved with some of our younger learners in doing some type of literacy activity,” said Lisa Eckert, director of early learning at Pequea Valley. At the event, there will be “reading stations” that will feature the reading of picture books and other

kids’ books and some sort of activity, which ranges from fishing to matching ducks. Some stations are themed by the team or club organization that is running it; for example, the football team’s station always includes a football-related activity, while the cheerleading team will allow the young learners to perform stunts with them. “We basically have our athletic teams and some different clubs and groups in the high school or secondary school sign up, and they See Reading pg 2

Intercourse Fire Company will host its annual traditional Amish-style wedding dinner on Saturday, Oct. 3, at the station, 10 N. Hollander Road, Intercourse. T he meal will feature an all- you- can-eat dinner that includes roast chicken with filling, mashed potatoes and gravy, dinner rolls, fruit cups, pepper cabbage and cooked celery, as well as beverages and desserts. There is a dine-in or takeout option for the meal. Takeout will begin at 11 a.m., while dine-in will begin at noon. Both options will end at 5 p.m. or whenever food is sold out. There is a varying cost for adults and children from ages 5 to 12. Kids age 4 and under eat free. “It’s all pretty much considered homemade,” said Nathan King, deputy fire chief at the Intercourse Fire Company. “We’re often serving around 1,000 to 1,100 (people), and it’s our last big fundraiser of the year.” King said that roughly threefourths of people choose the takeout option for their dinner. However, eating in does have its perks. The dine-in option features a buffet-style, all-youcan-eat structure and leaves the opportunity for fellowship with other community members. “We have some parties of 10 or 15 that’ll come,” he said. “They’ll all just come in, hang out and eat together. Mennonite Life will host its annual Maize & Snitz Fest on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the 1719 Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street. The event allows visitors to explore the Indigenous and European traditions that helped shape Lancaster County. Throughout the day, artisans and interpreters will demonstrate 18th-century crafts and activities associated with both European settlers and the Indigenous people around the Pequea and Conestoga valleys. Visitors may experience apple b u t te r m a k i n g , b l ac ksmithing demonstrations, Indigenous stor ytelling and foodways, a hymn sing, and other historic crafts. The festival will also offer

visitors the opportunity to tour the historic 1719 Herr House and Lancaster Longhouse and to view a Conestoga wagon. Members of the Pennsylvania Native American Flute Circle will perform. Children may enjoy games, crafts, and a scavenger hunt with prizes. The admission fee will be discounted for youths ages 6 to 16, with complimentary admission for children age 5 and under. Families of five or more people in a single household may take advantage of a family rate at the event entrance. It’s become a hit with young learners, but it isn’t just for them. “I think the athletes and the older kids love it just as much as the younger kids,” Eckert said. Outside of the literacy stations, the event will also feature concessions run by parent-teacher organizations from Salisbury and Paradise elementary schools, door prizes, giveaway drawings and a scavenger hunt. When a child completes the scavenger hunt, they’ll get access to a free ice cream station run by The Factory Ministries’ youth center. Another feature of the night is that every child who attends will receive free books, which have been donated by individuals and local businesses from the community. Preregistration is strongly encouraged but not required for the event. The link or QR code for

The event is limited to Pequea Valley students. In the event of inclement weather, the start time will be adjusted. Located at 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, the Factory holds a variety of programs aimed at addressing poverty in eastern Lancaster County. It has an on-site market that provides those in need with food purchased with Factory Bucks, which can be earned through attending Factory-based programs.

Proceeds will support hospice care, palliative care, grief support, and other services for patients and families coping with serious illness throughout central Pennsylvania, regardless of their ability to pay. The organization strives to provide personalized, compassionate care and support. Held Sept. 5 and 7, the event featured thousands o f don ate d i tems a nd drew bidders from across the region. He said that organizations have done a good job at telling people what to do in case of an emergency, but prevention is just as important as the response. “People need to understand what prevention looks like before someone is in crisis,” he said. “Understand those protective factors as well as what their role can be while someone is getting help, and what support looks like afterwards.” Lastly, Breneman highlighted the need to help people tell the stories that make the issues. He referenced an example where data can only go so far. “We have to help them tell the story of where did

they find it, was it safe for them to tell their story, what worked,” he said. “We need to build on that; that is what we need to focus on.” In the four breakout sessions, conference attendees heard from a litany of speakers, addressing topics like emotional literacy, spiritual support groups, warning signs and trust and how they relate to suicide prevention. T he conference gave attendees the opportunity to learn from local and regional experts. On the day, there were four breakout sessions and a panel discussion preceded by a keynote speech from Jay Breneman, director of firearm suicide prevention policy at CeaseFirePA. Breneman, of Erie, is a U.S. Army combat veteran. His work revolves around the gun violence crisis; firearm suicide is responsible for over half of gun deaths in the commonwealth. Breneman offered a fourpronged solution to the issue. His first point was for organizations to build feedback into the programs they already hold. “This doesn’t have to cost a lot of money,” Breneman said. “It doesn’t mean putting another barcode in front of you. Lancaster Science Factory Receives Grant

The Lancaster Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) recognized several members during a promotion and awards ceremony on Aug. 24, highlighting achievements across multiple levels of the program. As part of the program, Cadet Col. Slater Shannon of East York received the Commander’s Commendation. The award was presented by Lt. Col. Jeffry Smith - commander of CAP’s Pennsylvania Group 2 - on behalf of Col. James Ridley - commander of the Northeast Region, which consists of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, and Pennsylvania. Shannon was honored for serving as the secretary of the Regional Committee, which was responsible for coordinating regional engagement and ensuring all states and units contributed to the 250th Fourth of July celebration. The committee also designed CAP’s commemorative challenge coin. S enior memb er Tara Hsiung of Lititz was promoted to second lieutenant, marking the beginning of CAP’s officer leadership track for adult senior members. Cadet Chief Master Sgt. The Lancaster Science Factor y has received a $300,000 grant from the Dart Foundation - the largest one-time gift in the Science Factory’s history. T he funds will support two new interactive exhibit areas at the Science Factory. The first area, the Wonder Zone, will engage visitors in exploration of light, color, sound, forces and motion, and engineering challenges. The Wonder Zone is designed to be developmentally appropriate and accessible for kids ages 3 to 5, but it may be enjoyed by visitors of all ages. Construction on the Wonder Zone area is now underway in anticipation of a grand opening to the public the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 14 and 15. The Wonder Zone will feature exhibits like Colorful Shadows, the Everbright, Shape Projector, Ramps and Magneticars, Reach Sound exhibit, Pin wall, Clinky Rods, and Engineering Wall. The exhibits will also feature early literacy prompts and tips for caregivers to engage their early learners in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The second exhibit area,

How People Make Things, will bring manufacturing to life, showing how everyday objects are made, and highlighting the people who make them and their careers. Development of the hands-on exhibit area is still underway, and the Science Factory anticipates installation in early 2027. This exhibit represents a partnership with the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh to adapt the Pittsburgh institution’s travelling exhibit, How People Make Things, for permanent installation at the Science Factory. The exhibit teaches students about introductory principles of manufacturing through the concepts of cut, mold, deform, and assemble. These projects are part of a larger, multiyear exhibit refurbishment at the Science Factory, where 40% of all exhibits were installed when the organization first opened its doors in 2008. To date, $570,000 has been raised toward an estimated project budget of $750,000. Future improvements will feature updates to the Bubble Zone, the Water Lab, and additional exhibit areas.

Red Sand Project Shines Light on NSI’s Mission BY JEFF FALK

W hether through the eyes or the mind’s imagination, the act of visualization possesses the power to create moving images, bold stimuli and lasting impressions. Few endeavors reflect the mission of North Star Initiative (NSI) as well as the Red Sand Project. “Red sand is used because it immediately attracts y o u r a t t e n t i o n ,” s a i d Melinda Clark, who’s been the CEO of NSI for four years. “When you pour it on the sidewalk, it represents people who have fallen through the cracks. Filling the cracks symbolizes that we’re not willing to have people fall in the cracks. We will become a community where trafficking can end.” Recently, Clark, Ariana Sequino and Michelle Curiel, all members of the NSI team - a nonprofit dedicated to fighting human trafficking and exploitation - took advantage of an opportunity to participate in the national Red Sand Project. On the sidewalks of the heritage block near Penn Square in the city of Lancaster, participants poured red sand into the cracks between bricks. About 20 human trafficking oppo-

said Clark, a resident of East Hempfield. “Victims are attracted by potential romance opportunities or some other false promise. When we understand the truth of the strategies, then we can build protective measures into young people’s lives. Traffickers are looking for vulnerabilities to get access to potential victims.” NSI was founded in 2010 and seven years later constructed one of the only survivor shelters dedicated to long-term restoration in the region. NSI, which is currently serving six survivors of human trafficking, employs 22 staff members. “We are committed to

ending trafficking in our community,” said Clark. “That happens when people decide to come alongside us. Yes, trafficking is happening, and it’s a terrible crime. But we don’t need to fear it because we can make our community trafficking-proof. It’s terrible, but we’re doing something about it.” On Thursday, Oct. 1, from 6 to 8 p.m, North Star Initiative will host its annual fundraising gala at The Star Barn, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown. People were starting to ask, ‘What is this?’ We told them, ‘Human trafficking is here, and we’re standing against it. That’s why we’re here.’ “I don’t think many people know about the Red Sand Project,” continued Clark. “The purpose is to drive awareness to the issue and the services that are available. We’re making a statement, and we want to make others aware. Trafficking is happening. We want people to know about North Star, because people are encouraged when they know there are resources. I keep running into people who don’t know about North Star and what we do.” A c c o rd i n g t o C l a r k , the number one tool in attracting potential victims to human trafficking is social media, and force is only used in about three percent of the total human trafficking cases. She also said that more than half of the victims of human trafficking were exploited by family members or trusted caregivers. “We need to strengthen young people by connecting them with safe adults,”
