PV Benefit Concert To Fund Choir Activities

“This is (the event) when we get the most creative liberty,” said Pequea Valley High School (PVHS) chorus vice president Liv Hostetter. “We get to choose our solos.”

Chorus director Nathan Bankert agreed. “(For the choral benefit concert), I let the kids pick a solo and sing it,” admitted Bankert. “This is the one time of year, there are no auditions. I tell them, ‘This is a chance to sing and just showcase your voice,’ and we have amazing talent.”

“We are small, but we’re fierce,” added chorus treasurer RJ Forsythe. For about a decade, the family and friends of PVHS choir members have attended the free choral benefit concert, where they can hear solos, duets, trios, and full choirs. The 2025 event will be held at the new Pequea Valley Secondary School, 4033 E. Newport Road, Kinzers, on

Sunday, Oct. 5. The event will feature food trucks, music, and prizes. Doors will open at 5 p.m. Solos and small groups of singers will perform starting at 6 p.m. At 7 p.m., the full choir will sing, and at 7:30 p.m,. prizes will be announced.

According to Bankert, the theme began as strictly movie musicals, but as students suggested song selections for the event, he decided to broaden the focus. “That gave the kids more options to choose from,” noted Bankert. Chorus treasurer RJ Forsythe said that he will sing a song from “Phantom of the Opera,” and chorus secretary Josiah Fisher said he had chosen a song from “Newsies.” Chorus president Bella Biddle has selected a song from “Grease,” and Hostetter will perform a piece from “Les Miserables.”

Bankert shared that the full choir will do a song from “La La Land” along with a medley of songs from “The Greatest Showman.” Because Bankert now oversees the seventh

Paradise Township Lions Club member and organizer of the upcoming Dinner in the Dark fundraiser Bill Dodds knows the history of the club’s dedication to helping individuals who are blind or vision impaired.

“At the Lions International convention in 1925, Helen Keller challenged the Lions to be “knights for the blind in the crusade against darkness,’” said Dodds. “The

Lions took that challenge.”

Dodds is carrying on that effort by overseeing the details for the club’s annual Dinner in the Dark, which will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at White Chimneys, 5117 Lincoln Highway, Gap. Doors will open at 6 p.m. when the silent auction begins, and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. In addition to the meal, there will be presentations by VisionCorps, which will receive the profits from the dinner.

Sarah Zeitler wants to get people talking about some of life’s most basic necessities while making sure everyone has access to them.

Looking forward to performing at the upcoming Pequea Valley High School benefit concert are (from left) RJ Forsythe, Josiah Fisher, Liv Hostetter, and Bella Biddle.

On the menu for the event will be baked chicken, roast beef and gravy, red skin potatoes, baby carrots, string beans, rolls and butter, and a tossed salad. Dessert will feature pumpkin and apple pies and chocolate cake. Beverages, which will be lemonade, coffee, beer, and wine, will all be included in the ticket.

However, it is not the food but how it is eaten that makes Dinner in the Dark a unique experience. With the goal of helping attendees to understand different levels of vision impairment, individuals may choose from different implements that simulate conditions that degenerate vision and introduce the wearer to the impact of that and how to function in that situation. The aim is to teach attendees about the subject by giving them a chance to eat a meal with limited or no vision.

“You eat blindfolded or they provide glasses (that simulate) various deficiencies,” said Dodds, who added that the food is arranged in a clock format on the plate and diners are given instructions and sometimes a helper to aid them in eating.

Dodds shared that the silent auction usually features about 50 items, some of which are donated by local businesses. “We had Magic and Wonder Theater donated dinner and show tickets last year,” he noted, adding that Lions Club members also donate items. Dodds is a well-known local artist, and he usually donates a print to the auction. He added that the items on the auction table vary, but that auctioneer Joe Bartolo coordinates items including sports memorabilia, college and National Football League items, and celebrity items. Previous auction items have included gift certificates for resort stays, floral arrangements, designer purses, and a flat screen television.

funds that the group can use to fund activities throughout the school year. “We do this at the beginning of the year, and it helps us financially throughout the year,” explained Bankert, who said that past concerts have raised more than $3,000, but he would love to see this year’s event top $5,000. “The whole point is to raise funds for the choral program for music trips, cleaning choral robes, festivals, and auditions,” he said.

The students hope area residents will come to the concert and enjoy the music. “This event is the most fun (of all the presentations we do),” pointed out Fisher.

Biddle said she likes looking back at the tapes of the benefit concert later in the school year. “Because this concert is early, it marks our growth,” she explained. “We listen back to recordings, and we can see how much we have grown in the winter months.” More information about the choir may be found by searching for “Pequea Valley Music Boosters” on Facebook.

hygiene products for girls and women in need. What began for Zeitler as a simple search for a place to donate gently used bras has grown into a mission she calls both energizing and deeply personal.

“I’m very focused on changing the conversation,” says Zeitler, who has two teenage daughters, ages 14 and 16. “Why don’t we talk about pads and tampons? … I tell my girls, ‘You don’t have to be embarrassed by this topic.’ I want to help people who don’t have access to products most of us take for granted.”

Zeitler discovered I Support the Girls in late 2024. When she realized Lancaster no longer had an active chapter, she quickly stepped up. The hyperlocal aspect drew her in.

“I like that the bras you’re giving are not going to women in another state,” she said. “They’re going right back to local women. I also wanted to be sure these bras were going to women in need who were going to use them.”

I Support the Girls began 10 years

ago when founder Dana Marlowe started the organization in the Washington, D.C., area. From one donated bra, the organization has grown to more than 40 million products donated over the past decade.

Locally, Zeitler collects donations and works with partners including Second Grace, which supports young single mothers, and River’s Place, a free clothing closet at

Church Plans Community Meal

The mission committee of the Leacock Presbyterian Church, 3181 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, will serve a hot meal from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 25. The menu will consist of lasagna, tossed salad, garlic or plain bread, applesauce, and desserts.

The meal is free and will be served in the handicapped-accessible Smith Fellowship Hall.

For more information, call the church at 717-687-6619.

“I like to make sure there is diversity in what I’m giving away,” she said. “I want to have everything from sports bras to special occasions, from tween sizes to larger sizes.” Her work has become a family effort. Her daughters, August and Citizen, pitch in with everything from social media posts to sorting donations. They’ve also joined her at training sessions offered by the national nonprofit, turning the project into a shared mission of empowerment.

This year, Zeitler received a grant to create a permanent collection site in Lancaster. While she’s still searching for the right location, she continues to collect donations at her home and through temporary community partners. This fall, for example, a collection bin will be available at Pocket Books, 903 Wheatland Ave., Lancaster, through October. For Zeitler, the work is about more

than just distributing products; it’s about starting conversations that too often remain in the shadows.

“I’m passionate about women’s causes,” she said. “We have very unique needs. Men don’t have to worry about having the right bras to go to work and feel professional or feel confident in their own skin. This is something I’m very passionate about, and doing this work literally energizes me.”

She notes that her involvement in the project has raised her own awareness about community needs.

“Think about victims of domestic violence,” she said. “The police often collect undergarments as evidence, and these women are sent home

without underwear. ... Girls literally miss school because they don’t have the proper hygiene products.”

It’s also important to Zeitler that donations stay in the local area.

“Everything that comes into us, whether it’s money, hygiene products or bras, it all goes right to women and girls right here in Lancaster,” she said. “This is really a boots-on-the-ground organization, and we are helping right where it’s needed.”

Along with the auction, funds are raised with a themed basket giveaway, which usually includes up to 18 baskets. Dodds said previous years baskets have included a chocolate basket and a home décor basket. He expects to see a chocolate basket donated again this year.

As in the past, a VisionCorps representative will speak at the dinner. “Last year a VisionCorps participant gave a testimonial, and I have requested one again this year,” stated Dodds, who noted that the seaker was blind and carried a white cane. “It would be great if (we can have a testimonial) again.”

Dodds noted that the Dinner in the Dark usually attracts more than 70 attendees but that he would like to see a few more this year. He would also like to raise the amount donated to VisionCorps. “We have raised $3,000 the last two years, but I am pushing to make more this year,” he shared, adding that a number of local businesses have been contacted about sponsoring the event.

Individuals wishing to purchase tickets or sponsor a table are encouraged to do so before Monday, Oct. 13, by calling 717-435-0706. Dodds added that some tickets may be available at the door. More information may be found by searching for “Paradise Township Lions Club” on Facebook.
