“We want to bring awareness to local history and have some family fun,” said Patti Shrom when describing Christiana Heritage Days being presented by the Christiana Historical Society (CHS) on Friday through Sunday, Sept. 12 through 14. The celebration will include music, food, historical demonstrations and displays, children’s activities and guided wagon tours through the town. Visitors will also be able to learn about the Christiana Resistance, a slave rebellion that took place in Christiana on Sept. 11, 1851. Activities will be centered at the William P. Brinton House, 17 Green St., which is the CHS’s headquarters, but other events will take place within walking distance at
the Christiana Freight Station, 10 Railroad Ave.; the Christiana Masonic Lodge, 115 E. Slokom Ave.; and the Underground Railroad Center at Zercher’s Hotel, 11 Green St., which will be open for tours.
The opening event will be on Sept. 12 when Hilton and the Pickers will present a concert on the lawn of the Brinton House from 6 to 8 p.m. “We will have the big tent set up for Saturday, and they will perform there, and it’s free to the public,” Shrom said. Hot dogs will be available for purchase, as well as pizza from the Christiana Pizza Company.
Events on Saturday, Sept. 13, will include a Civil War encampment, vendors and historical displays.

Last year, Cornerstone Reproductive Health moved its annual Walk for Life event from Gap to a New Holland location that organizers thought would be more central to the ministry’s service area. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate on the day of the event.

The Rock Ford Foundation has been awarded a $15,000 grant from the Lancaster County Community Foundation’s John J. Snyder, Jr. Fund for Historic Preservation. This grant is part of a total of $317,200 awarded in 2025 to support the efforts of 18 community initiatives dedicated to preserving Lancaster County’s heritage.
The funding will support continued exterior maintenance and painting at Historic Rock Ford, the circa 1794 home of General Edward Hand. The preservation efforts will help to ensure that the historic site remains a valuable educational and cultural resource.
Since 1924, the Lancaster County Community Foundation has worked to establish permanent funds to support the community by making grant investments to local organizations. Today, the foundation manages approximately $200 million in community assets that support Lancaster County every year.
Senior Citizens’ Group To Meet
The Strasburg Area Senior Citizens will hold the group’s monthly meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 1 p.m. at the Strasburg Fire Hall, 203 W. Franklin St., Strasburg. A presentation by CPRS Physical Therapy and refreshments will follow the meeting.
Guests are welcome. There is a nominal registration fee at the door to cover the fire hall rental.
Strasburg Seniors is a nonprofit organization chartered in 1966 for the benefit of area senior citizens age 50 and older. Meetings are generally held on the third Wednesday of every month, and the club also holds a summer picnic and yearly Christmas party as well as outings and trips.

For 2025, Cornerstone will be back in New Holland with an event that will feature a 5K walk, cornhole tournament, and a host of children’s activities. “We are really praying for good weather,” said Imchen. “If we have a good day, we would have a lot more (attendees). We are hoping it will be sunny and the community will come out.” Imchen noted that organizers hope to attract residents of nearby retirement communities and their grandchildren along with members of local churches.
The 11th annual Walk for Life will be held on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 9 a.m. to noon at New Holland Church of the Nazarene, 428 Ranck Road, New Holland. Both the walk and the cornhole event will begin at 9 a.m.
As in 2024, the 5K walk will be on the walking trail behind the church. Because the trail is only a mile long, walkers will do three loops to equal 5K distance. The
walk is open to people of all ages, and prizes will be awarded to the individual walker and team of walkers who collect the most funds from sponsorships. Children who walk the trail will receive a passport booklet they can have stamped at various spots. “At different points on the trail, we have stations that correlate with gestational ages and the size of the baby with a different fruit,” said Imchen.
“A blueberry is seven weeks.” Imchen explained that the correlating signs begin with a mustard seed, include a raspberry and a lime, and end with the watermelon. “It’s fun to have those visuals to give them an idea how fast the baby is growing,” Imchen said. Children who complete one loop will receive a prize from a prize box.
“If they do all three loops, we have decorative rocks with little creatures and animals,” stated Imchen. To register ahead and seek sponsors for the 5K walk, readers may visit www .pacornerstone.org and click on “About” and then
“Events.” Day-of registration at the event is also welcomed.
The amateur cornhole tournament, which was held for the first time in 2024, will be held this year as well. “People really enjoyed it, so we’re doing it again,” said Imchen. Those wishing to participate are asked to sign up in teams of two. Cornhole registration must be completed at the aforementioned website. “Look for the button that says walk/cornhole registration,” directed Imchen. Cornhole teams must sign up by Tuesday, Sept. 16, to participate. Prizes will be awarded for the first-, second- and third-place winners of the tournament.
A Kids Zone will be open throughout the event. Imchen reported that an inflatable obstacle course, face painting, balloon animals, baby chicks, and a hayride will all be included in the activities. “Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary (will give a presentation), and Ornate Dance Theatre is coming to do a dance
party,” noted Imchen. “There will be lots of different stations and lots of activities.”
Free food will also be offered during the day. Food items to be given away will include hot dogs, popcorn, chips, and a sweet treat. Packets of tickets will

A chicken barbecue will be prepared on-site by Randy Yoder, with proceeds from sales to benefit CHS. Two trucks - Joe’s Fish Sandwiches and Mocha Motion Coffee - will also be on hand. Pizza will be offered by the Christiana Pizza Company.
Highlights at the freight station will include tours of a caboose; a display of two rail motor cars; and an outdoor G-scale garden railroad display (weather permitting). New this year will be a letter press machine demonstration; souvenir tickets will be available. A miniature train will go from the Brinton House to the train station.
Also featured at the location will be a replica of a box used by Henry “Box” Brown. Brown was an enslaved man in Virginia who, in 1849, mailed himself to freedom in a wooden crate to Philadelphia. “People can guess how much it cost (for postage) and for a donation they can and sit in the box to feel what it was like,” Shrom noted.
Also on Sept. 13, there will be historical demonstrations and displays at the Christiana Masonic Lodge, including a collection of photos about Quaker his -
The Heritage Days celebration will conclude on Sept. 14 with Friendship Day, which will include a short service with prayers and music at 10 a.m., followed by a potluck lunch at noon. “During the Christiana Resistance, all the community got together to help. We want to bring all the community together again,” Shrom said. “It will be a fun, relaxing time.”
Shrom noted that when the 2025 celebration ends, plans will begin for next year’s event, which will commemorate the 175th anniversary of the Christi-

and a variety of Bible clubs and support groups. The grief ministry, called BASIS, provides Christian support groups for grieving parents throughout the county and beyond, and the training program offers workshops to help family members, friends, and community leaders learn about what life is like with a disability or how to navigate the journey of grief.
“We are growing each year,” said Tara Kelley, director of disability ministries and training and equipping with HVMI. “We are dividing and adding programs as we see the needs of children shift and as the older ones (mature).” Kelley emphasized that the ministry will continue to provide free services for individuals who need them regardless of age. “It never ends,” she said. “Individuals shift from group to group.”
Kelley backed up her words by pointing out that the ministry will start a new preschool group for children with disabilities at the HVMI offices, 3261 Rothsville Road, Akron, beginning on Monday, Oct. 27, at 10:30 a.m. “It will be the fourth Monday of each month from October to April,” explained Kelley, who added this is the first time the ministry has held a group for preschoolers. “We will have a new daytime parent

BASIS has support groups meeting in a number of locations within Lancaster County including Akron, Mount Joy, Paradise, and Quarryville. An online group meets monthly as well. The ministry holds an annual breakfast and picnic. A new group, which is open to any bereaved parent or grandparent who has experienced the death of a child, is starting up this fall in New Holland. “(BASIS director Dan Steinman) has had more inquiries in the New Holland area,” shared Kelley, who noted that although the group will meet in the Prayer and Meditation Room at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, it will be open to the public. The group, which will meet
the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m., will next gather on Tuesday, Oct. 7. Readers who are interested in the group may visit www.hvmi.org/grief-basis or call HVMI and ask for Steinman.
Several years ago, HVMI purchased a former golf course and built the current offices on part of the land. The organization began to hold day camp there in 2021. Two three-day sessions are now held each week during the months of June and July. “That’s nine sessions over six weeks,” explained Kyle Robinson, executive director of HVMI, who added that 123 campers took part this year. A year from now, construction on buildings for overnight camp is scheduled to begin. Proposed facilities include a multipurpose building,
which will house a chapel, Bible classrooms, training rooms, and a large meeting room, along with a dining hall and kitchen. A second building behind the main one will provide dormstyle living with smaller rooms for campers with medical needs and staff members, meeting rooms, and an infirmary to make overnight camp available in the future. Outside, a pool, pavilion, and playground are planned. Already, carefully graded handicapped-accessible walkways traverse the hillside. By the summer of 2028, the organization plans to hold overnight camping at the facility. Fundraising to make the dream a reality is ongoing.
More information about HVMI may be found at www.hvmi.org.
