he fifth quarter is back at Pequea Valley. After last year’s successful trial run, with 89 students attending, Lighthouse Church is once again bringing its fifth quarter ministry to Pequea Valley following the Braves’ Friday, Sept. 4, nonleague home game against Thomas A. Edison High School. The fifth quarter is a free and safe afterparty for students in grades seven to 12 following select home football games. At fifth quarters, there is free food, sports, activities and a powerful message. The fifth quarter will be held on the lower soccer field by Pequea Valley Secondary from 9 to 11 p.m. following the conclusion of the game. One of the things Marilyn Hobday enjoys most about the Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show is the opportunity it provides for education. The retired Hempfield School District art teacher created the show 38 years ago, with a goal of offering visitors a wide range of art options while encouraging participating vendors to demonstrate their art or share their process with shoppers. The show will be held outside from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 6, at Root’s Country Market & Auction, 705 Graystone Road, Manheim. “We have about 120 artists and craftsmen participating in the show,” Hobday shared. “ They’re coming from as far away as Florida (and) Maine.” A featured artist in this show will be Craig Bireley. “He is a wood turner, and he creates these huge, gorgeous bowls,” Hobday said. “They are exquisite.” Bireley uses Pennsylvania hardwood to create his bowls, shaping each piece to showcase the color, grain and edge of the material. Time to dust off those pencil skirts and sailor shorts. The Moores Memorial Library is preparing for a unique new fundraiser, a “Rockin’ ’50s Dance Night” at the Christiana Fire Company, 214 S. Bridge St., on Friday, Sept. 11, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Doors will open at 5:30, and attendees are asked to bring out their best ’50s-inspired outfit. “Poodle skirts is what I would think of,” said Karen Woods, one of the organizers of the event.

T he Conesto ga Herb Guild will present its annual Herb Fest from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Millersville Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), 219 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville. Admission and parking are free. Attendees may learn about plants and related products and the cultivation and use of herbs for culinary, medicinal, and decorative purposes. “They are working artists, and they have a wealth of knowledge they bring to the jury,” Hobday said, noting that her own watercolors will be for sale at the show. “We try to make the show very diverse when we choose our vendors.” She also enjoys mentoring younger artists and encouraging them to participate in shows such as this one, where their art will be seen by hundreds of shoppers. than a decade. “What he does is spectacular.” Along with woodturning, the show will feature photographers, watercolor and oil paintings, metalwork, wreaths, home décor, soaps, handmade cards and more. “We really have something for every budget and every interest,” Hobday said. “We even have someone who makes brooms.” Many vendors will demonstrate their work, and all artisans are available to answer questions and interact with the crowd. “The show is meant to be educational to see how people make their wares as much as it’s meant to showcase amazing art,” Hobday explained. “I think that aspect really sets us apart.” When she organized the first show almost 40 years ago, Hobday gathered 83 vendors. The show has grown every year. “We are ranked in the top 200 best shows in the country,” she remarked. “People know our reputation.” The show is juried by a team of five people, all of whom are artisans who participate in the show.

decided that not all the stories had been told and that they should continue to gather them. The solution was obvious: form a historical society. Keep researching, asking people for stories and committing to paper (computer, today) the rich history of this little corner of the world. For the last 25 years, dedicated township members have done just that. Throughout those years, several attempts were made to acquire a building to house the growing collection of objects and stories donated. All was cataloged and carefully stored, and many objects were brought out for the living history

Amtrak did donate bricks, window frames and the 18-foot primary roof beam. The builders’ initials are inscribed on it. Amtrak also prepared and printed a history of the Gap Station, the only Queen Anne style structure on the line. The historical society even had a building sold to it for one dollar - that little white one on the southwest corner of Newport Road a n d L i n co l n H i g hway. Adapting the two large rooms on the first floor to the society’s needs had

just begun as PennDOT construction on Newport Road started. It is unknown if it was the new drainage portals or the heavy equipment so close to the house, but very soon the west wall began to sink and cracks appeared. The cracks grew. No amount of conservation would guarantee its stability. Houston Run bought it back to round out their acreage before their own land dissolution. Their generous offer formed the largest donation the historical society has received and

has allowed it to consider a new venture - a standing museum. All the while, the society continued accepting, cataloging, and storing township family treasures. A serendipitous meeting in 2025 matched the society with an iconic Salisbury Township business, the old Lengacher Cheese House, 5015 Lincoln Highway, next to Roamers’ Retreat. Half of the building was for rent, the most conservative option for a nonprofit society to choose today. The historical society signed on and began renovating, often able to negotiate rea-

sonable reductions in cost. Many established museums donated display items they no longer used. Yard sales and Roots Market in Manheim were sources for chairs and kitchen items. At last, the huge Denlinger murals could come out of storage. By this past June, the

society was ready to bring out some of the collections for display. Members got a preview after the annual picnic at White Chimneys Estate, a loyal sponsor of 15 years. The society was at the annual living history event also at White Chimneys in July. Then, it was time to think about officially

It’s a lot of fun and a great time.” Last year’s two fifth quarter events at Garden Spot drew nearly 600 middle school and high school students. Lighthouse is also in talks with other schools, including Cocalico, for future fifth quarter events. At the moment, the ministry can only hold one fifth quarter event per week. To keep the event secure, students will register before they enter the fenced-off area. Lighthouse works with constables from the football game and volunteers to ensure that every student stays safe. All of the volunteers who work fifth quarter events have passed background checks. The fifth quarter is a reflection of the church’s mission. Lighthouse Church, located at 1279 Main St., East Earl, also hosts a youth group service every Wednesday from 6:30

In the lead-up to the event, there’s a cardboard cutout of Presley in the library’s lobby; the cutout and Krick will be available for photo-ops at the event. “He’s all over the country,” Woods said of Krick. “He’s reputed to be very, very good. ... A couple of the people coming know of him and have seen him before, so they were very excited.” An admission fee will

The library had 62 readers in its summer reading program this year. “We always have a lot of participation, which is nice,” said Kimberly Campbell, one of the event’s organizers. “That’s (what) the majority of the funds raised go to.” A side from children-

centric events, the library also recently held a movie night. The library is asking the community to come out for one night to support all things it does for the community throughout the year. “The library is a pillar, especially in this small tow n ,” C a m pb e l l s aid. “People come to use the computers, homeschooled kids every fall. It’s a very family-friendly librar y; kids are running around.” Founded in 1881, the library is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.
