Club Wreaths Across America Garden Members Create, Grow Sets Annual and Nurture Golf Fundraiser BY JEFF FALK

Once his sons were old enough to get involved in youth football, he coached them in Garden Spot’s youth system for seven years up until he got involved with Pequea Valley’s junior high program. “I’ve always had a passion for (football),” he said. “Coaches and youth leaders had a great impact on my life, so I wanted to be able to give it back.” Tibbins, a Garden Spot alum,
Kathy Heil thoroughly enjoys gardening; she likes spending time alone with her perennials that thrive in the garden outside of her home. But Heil also enjoys sharing her gardening passion with others. A resident of Manheim Township, Heil is the president of the Women’s Garden Club of Lancaster County. “It’s therapy and enjoyment,” said Heil. “I enjoy seeing if the birds come, and the insects and all the natural habitat. We also have a patio in the backyard, and we enjoy sharing our meals outside. We also have a water feature to go with the garden.” There’s something calming and medicinal associated with humans physically connecting with an Earth that sustains them. Gardening also has a way of triggering our nurturing mechanisms. “I just like getting my hands in the dirt,” said Heil. “I’ve pretty much always been a gardener. I come from a farming family. I’ve always had an inclination to do some gardening.” Many of the same feelings Heil has about gardening she shares with the other 50 dues-paying members of the garden club. That bond possesses the power to inspire strong friendships and uplifting camaraderie. “ T hey ’re women from all kinds of backgrounds,” said Heil. “That’s what makes it very interesting. You learn about all these pursuits people have. “We share our pursuit of gardening interests,” she added. “We

he Pequea Valley chapter of Wreaths Across America (WAA) will hold its sixth annual golf classic at Tanglewood Manor Golf Club on Friday, Oct. 9, with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Proceeds from the event will benefit the nonprofit organization, which is responsible for placing more than 3,100 wreaths at local veterans’ graves on Wreaths Across America Day, held this year on Saturday, Dec. 19. The Pequea Valley chapter handles 31 cemeteries within the Pequea Valley, Octorara and Lampeter-Strasburg school districts. There is a flat registration fee for every golfer, which includes a round of golf, the use of a cart, snacks and lunch. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. Tanglewood

If I could bring everybody together and point out to people that we have more in common than we are different, then it’s worth it. Lancaster Area Sewing Network (L A SN) will present “Processing Flax” on Monday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. at Lancaster Friends Quaker Meeting , 110 Tulane Terrace, Lancaster. Cloth, and the thread with which to sew it, all begin as fiber. Today ’s fabrics come from a wealth of fibers, many of which are synthetic, but before the 20th century, sewing thread and fabric were made of natural fibers and could even be homemade. Flax was the typical fiber Lancaster County families used to make their own sewing thread and cloth. Flax comes from a plant that was once a commonly grown crop in Pennsylvania. During the upcoming presentation, Tina Mickley will discuss flax culture and retting and will demonstrate the processes of breaking, scutching and hackling flax fiber, along with how that

Mickley, a spinner and weaver with a fine arts degree in painting, became interested in historic textiles and their production more than 45 years ago while working as a costumed interpreter at a national historic site. Since 2018 she has grown and processed her own flax, along with volunteering at area historic sites demonstrating spinning, weaving, and flax dressing. She is an independent contractor at the Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, where she regularly interprets 18thand 19th-century textile production. Mickley helped to develop and teaches the

There’s a lot of veterans that golf down there, so they ’re ver y willing to accommodate our golfing.” Last year, 104 golfers participated in the event. The lunch varies by year and is not yet finalized, but in the past it has ranged from pork barbecue to mac and cheese to meatball sandwiches. Another highlight of the event is its giveaway drawing baskets. McNees Wallace & Nurick recently announced that attorney Phillip Michael has joined the firm’s Litigation Group in its Lancaster office. Michael has more than a d e c ad e o f l i t i gat ion experience in both the private and public sectors. He joined McNees from a Lancaster-based law firm and previously served as deputy attorney general f o r t h e Pe n n s y l v a n i a Office of Attorney General, representing commonwealth agencies and departments in state and federal court. Earlier in his career, Michael served as an assistant public defender manager and an assistant public defender in the Lancaster County Public Defender’s Office. His courtroom experience spans state and federal jury trials, along with appellate work before Pennsylvania’s Superior and Commonwealth Courts. At McNees, Michael will focus on commercial and civil litigation, representing businesses and individuals in contract and business ownership disputes, real estate and employment matters, and municipal and civil rights claims, while also supporting the firm’s higher education clients. Michael earned his law degree from Temple University and a bachelor’s degree in political science and English from Gettysburg College.

also coached American Athletic Union (AAU) basketball. A connection made through that experience put him in contact with Mike Choi, who was then the top guy within Pequea Valley’s football program. Choi was looking for an extra assistant with a season on the horizon, and Tibbins fit the bill. He’s been with the Braves ever since, working his way up through the ranks and holding titles such as middle linebackers coach, offensive line coach and special teams coordinator. Choi resigned in March to take the top job at Upper Merion. Tibbins got the nod to replace him, becoming the ninth head football coach in Pequea Valley history. His sons attend Linville Hill Christian, which has a co-op agreement with Pequea Valley for football. Tibbins will have the opportunity to coach his younger son at the high school level. He described the opportunity as his “dream job.” “There’s not many people that go through my path,” he explained. “I stopped playing football in seventh grade. ... Ever since I started coaching, I knew I could do it forever. To get a chance to be a head coach, I just never thought with my path (that) it would be possible.” T he Braves went 3-7 overall last year and 1-6 in Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 5 play. They are only two years removed from the program’s first postseason trip, playing in the Class 3A Eastern Conference title game. Pequea Valley has only been playing football since

Yes,” said Bomgardner. “Is it a kids’ puppet show? No. I would say everything I do is going to be clean. It’s family-friendly. We’re going to stay out of the bedroom and the bathroom. We do jokes adults can enjoy and kids can be in the room for. It’s important to me that I always share something inspirational.” Growing up, Bomgard-

Tibbins hopes to establish a culture of hard work and community in his first year on the job. “I just love the community, and I love a good challenge,” he said. “Coach Choi came pretty close to sustaining (success). We’ve gotten close to being really good consistently, and it’s had some ups and downs.” T ibbins already sees the culture changing. The program has added some extra voluntary practices this summer, and they have been well attended. The Braves are seeing more success with their weight-lifting program than ever before. “I’m really tr ying to develop a culture with the kids that it’s not just football,” he said. “ We have the huge fundraiser on Saturday, like building a culture and setting the expectations to be clearly understood. ... I’ve been very clear to the kids that I’d rather go to battle with 18 kids that have been at everything and wanted (to be there) more than 30 kids that are half in or half out.” On the field, Tibbins said that fans should expect the Braves to retain their base Wing-T offense and 4-4 defense that have been staples of the program since its inception. However, he made sure to say that there will be some new wrinkles in the game plan on Friday nights. “Success is judged a little differently at Pequea ,” Tibbins said. “Having kids here this year is a success. Do I want to win games? Absolutely, but I want to compete, right? That’s their goal.”

She put me up on a stage at church in front of people. By age 14, I was doing 12 shows a year. By age 18, I was doing 80 shows a year. By age 21, I was doing 130 shows a year. “Yes, you can learn to be a ventriloquist,” concluded Bomgardner. “But ventriloquism is only interesting for 20 or 30 seconds. Bus Trip to Annapolis Set The Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County will hold its fall bus trip on Thursday, Oct. 1. Participants will visit Annapolis., Md., to gain insight into three historic homes. Participants will board the coach bus at Lancaster Shopping Center, 1625 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, at 8:15 a.m. and depart at 8:30 a.m. The group will begin its exploration at the William Paca House, a 1760s Georgian mansion that boasts a 2-acre garden and offers a peek into the inner workings of an upperclass household during the Revolutionary period. The house was restored in 1965 using historical artwork and archeological excavations. After enjoying a box lunch on the Paca Garden Terrace, attendees will
hear a presentation on the ongoing James Brice House restoration project. The first cornerstone was laid in 1767, and the house subsequently experienced centuries’ worth of repur posing. Since 2014, it has been managed by Historic Annapolis, which is transforming it into an educational museum. The trip is scheduled to conclude with a tour of the Hammond Harwood Hous e, which has an Anglo-Palladian design. The group will return to Lancaster Shopping Center at 5:15 p.m. There is a fee, with a discount for members of the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County.
