milie Thibeault started twirling when she was 7 years old. A Pequea Valley alumna, Thibeault got into the sport the same way that many of her peers did - having a mother who twirled. “Before I started twirling, I danced from when I was 2 until I was 7,” she said. “I liked dancing so much that (my mother) just kind of brought (twirling) up, and I took to it since then and never stopped.” Since that point, Thibeault has gone to many places and accomplished great things with a baton in her hand. She was a twirling trailblazer of sorts at Lebanon Valley College, where she recently earned a master’s degree in speech pathology and had the opportunity to represent her country in the “Olympics” of baton. Ever since she started twirling, training under Wendy Rhoads at Ab-Salute Twirling in Brownstown, she has competed in regional and national competitions in the sport, as well as twirling as part of the Pequea Valley

High School marching band. None of the many medals earned in those youth competitions compare to what she accomplished at the 2025 International Baton Twirling Federation (IBTF) Nations Cup, where she won a gold medal in the “three baton” category. Thibeault stated that her goal was only to qualify for the multiweek competition, held last year in Torino, Italy. Not only did she walk away with a gold medal, but she also placed within the top 10 in the solo category. “It was a really big honor for me to represent the USA,” she said. “I just love being able to represent my country and being able to go there and compete with friends and meet people from other countries. It was just an amazing, amazing experience.” When choosing a postsecondary institution, Thibeault was looking more on the educational side of things. There’s a great new nonprofit in Lancaster County that’s been founded by Neffsville resident Greta Myers. It’s called “Neuro Neighborhood.” “ We used ‘neighborhood’ to give people a welcoming invitation to something bigger than themselves,” said Myers, who also serves as executive director

of the organization. “Neighborhoods contain people who come together to support one another. years of education required for a master’s degree. Lebanon Valley College offers an accelerated, fiveyear program that allows students to earn their master’s degree all in one place. With her credits from high school, Thibeault completed the five-year program in four trips around the sun. She did, however, make sure that twirling was a possibility. “I also talked to Dr. Heffner, who is the marching band director there, about twirling,” she said. “He was very open to having a feature twirler, as well as other twirlers down the line. ... So that was a really good selling point for LVC, as well.” In her time in Annville, she not only twirled but also started her own twirling club. “My sophomore year, I had run into some friends and some new people who were talking about the fact that I was twirling with the marching band,” she said. “They were all interested in learning some of the basic skills, so we started a twirling club.” The club held twirler days for local kids and also developed a whole majorette line for the school’s marching band, “The Pride of the Valley.” By the time she graduated, the majorette line had four twirlers, all of whom were coached by Thibeault in the twirling club. She also now coaches at Ab-Salute, the same studio where she grew up. Working at WellSpan Health in York, she’s routinely heading up to Annville and Brownstown to coach young twirlers at her alma mater and her home studio. Thibeault retired from active competition after the Nations Cup in 2025, but coaching helps her remain active in the sport she grew up with. “I love twirling, and I really just want to see it grow and see more twirlers out on the field and really see the sport I grew up with continue to grow,” she said. “Twirling is a huge part of my life, so I’m really glad that I get to keep being a part of it, even if I’m not doing it.” She highly recommended Ab- Salute Twirling for anybody looking to get

Manufacturers’ Association Announces Expansion T he Manufacturers’ Association has announced an investment by BAE Systems to help expand the organization’s Automation Training Center, a new 5,000-square-foot stateof-the-art training facility dedicated to automation, robotics, and mechatronics training in support of the defense industrial base and regional manufacturing sector. In 2023, a year after their mother passed, the sisters took a trip to Florida to reminisce and visit Marco Island, where their parents enjoyed vacationing. Students Explore Costa Rica

A g roup of students from Twin Valley, Pequea Valley, Ephrata, and Cocalico traveled to Costa Rica from June 22 to July 1. The group traveled with WorldStrides and was accompanied by Costa Rican guide Gustavo Solís, who has led the group for the past three trips. Students benefited from his deep knowledge of Costa Rica’s history, wildlife, culture, and people.

At the beginning of their adventure, the students had the opportunity to stand on the rim of the Irazú Volcano, one of the country’s active volcanoes. In addition, they embraced Costa Rican culture by learning traditional dances, preparing authentic local dishes, and experiencing how food brings communities together. Science and nature came

alive when students visited CATIE, the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center, w he re lo c a l s c ie nt i st s introduced them to tropical agriculture and sustainable farming practices. They also spent time with members of the Kekoldi and Bribri Indigenous communities, learning about centuries-old traditions and medicinal plants, and even

making chocolate from freshly harvested cacao. In Tortuguero National Park, students navigated rain forest canals by boat, spotting monkeys, sloths, caimans, colorful birds, and other wildlife in one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on Earth. Students also challenged themselves by ziplining high above the rain forest canopy at Go Adventure Park and conquered the 500-step hike to the La Fortuna Waterfall. They relaxed in Costa Rica’s natural hot springs after days filled with exploration. The trip also included a visit to a local school. Stu-

dents connected with peers throu g h conversation, games, and sports; practiced their Spanish; and gained insight into another c o u n t r y ’s e d u c a t i o n a l system and daily life. The trip helped students to develop confidence and broaden their perspectives, and they returned home with special memories and a deeper appreciation for the global community.

UPMC Imaging Services at Lititz and Lancaster have been designated as Centers of Excellence (COEs) by GO2 for Lung Cancer for their commitment to provide the Lancaster community with patient-centered, evidence-based lung cancer screenings. COEs designated in lung cancer screening are committed to facilitating patient-centered communication and decision-making. COEs implement screening that is in accordance with current evidence and clinical guidelines from organizations such as the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network

(NCCN) while using a multidisciplinary approach to coordinate follow-up care, diagnostics, and treatment. While the recognition highlights the imaging services in Lititz and Lancaster, UPMC has lung cancer screening COE designation across the central Pennsylvania region. Lung cancer has been the long-leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, and most lung cancer diagnoses are made at the advanced stage of the disease. By providing individuals at high risk with screening that uses low-dose computed tomography, lung cancer can be found early when it is more treatable and potentially curable.

know about the Neuro Neighborhood, the more people we can support.” Founded in March of 2025, Neuro Neighborhood is an all-volunteer organization designed to help people dealing with neurological conditions like Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis. Those neurological conditions can occur through injury or a deterioration of the central ner vous system, which includes our brains and spinal cords. For now, Myers is operating Neuro Neighborhood out of her residence. “Spinal cord injuries or brain injur ies can be caused by traumatic events to either area of our central ner vous system, or lack of blood flow to that area,” said Myers. “Symptoms widely vary between neurological conditions including movement, sensory and cognitive changes. Cognitive changes can include difficulty with memory, sequencing or planning. Some movement symptoms can include increased tone and reflexes in muscles, difficulty initiating movement and weakness affecting many muscle groups. “Speech and breathing can be impacted as well, because both of these actions are controlled by our muscles,” she added. “Keep in mind that these symptoms are based in neurolog y; it is not as simple as going to the gym to get stronger. Recovery from these types of muscle changes must include what we call neuroplasticity to help improve these symptoms or be creative to find compensatory strategies to allow full participation in life.” One of Neuro Neighborhood’s most effective weapons in the fight against neurological disorders is activity or group activities. Among the community events that Neuro Neighborhood sponsors and conducts are regular Red Rose Parkinson’s Support Group meetings; Adaptive Recreation Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, at St. Peter’s Evangelical L u t h e ra n C h u rc h , 1 0 Delp Road, Lancaster; and periodic Neuro Caregiver

Support Group meetings at Wellness Merge Physical Therapy, 903 Nissley Road, Lancaster. All of those activities are free to attend, and some require preregistration at www .neuroneighborhood.org. “ We want people to know neurological conditions can happen to anyone, and if you or a loved one is diagnosed, there are people who want to help you navigate the challenges that you may be facing and support you in living a fulfilling life,” said Myers, a graduate of Warwick High School, who has a background in physical therapy. “We do not want people to isolate themselves or fear doing things based on a diagnosis. We encourage you to reach out to our specialized support, because, with (the) right support, you can thrive. In some of our most challenging times in life, we all need a neighborhood to count on.” Overseen by a five-person board of directors, Neuro Neighborhood serves about 200 individuals, mainly adults from Lancaster County and surrounding areas. Currently situated in the initial phase of its planned growth process, Neuro Neighborhood’s future goals include adding physical therapy services, incorporating a multidisciplinary team, locating a physical office space, adding wellness programming and partnering with similar organizations in the community. “As I continued to study to become a board-certified Neurological Clinical Specialist, I also began searching for more community resources for my patients,” said Myers. “Unfor tunately, I had trouble finding the types of resources and support that my patients were looking for, so I started writing those ideas down as a list. Then I did research and connected with other organizations around the country that were trying to incorporate a better continuum of care and support for adults with neurological conditions. My list continued to grow, and I found others who wanted to help me make that list a reality. Thus, we created Neuro Neighborhood.”

Local Service That Makes a Difference

For one day, Columbia’s Janson Field will transform into a living museum, bringing the sights, sounds and r ules of baseball’s earliest days back to life. On Saturday, Aug. 15, two vintage clubs will compete in a free doubleheader of 1864-style “base ball” (the original two-word spelling), a version of the game played by more than 400 teams across the country. The games will begin at 11 a.m. at the park, 650 Cherry St. The event is possible thanks to the support of the Columbia Lions Club as part of the borough’s yearlong tricentennial celebration, and admission is free. The matchup will pit the

Keystone Club of Harrisburg against the Mechanicsburg Zouaves. B oth teams recently competed with a total of 26 clubs in the Gettysburg National 19th Century Base Ball Festival, held July 18 and 19. Even the names of the teams are based in history, said Rich Heinick, who was a founding member of the Keystones when the team formed more than a decade ago. “Both clubs have borrowed their names from actual teams that played in those towns during the 1860s and 1870s,” he explained. “The Zouaves were re-formed recently, and this will be their inaugural game. There will be extra uniforms available if anyone

would like to try their hand at 1864 base ball.” More than one sports historian has described this vintage sport as “a Civil War re-enactment with real bullets.” The game will look familiar to today’s fans, except for two notable differences: Players compete without gloves, since they were not widely used until the early 1880s, and a ball caught after one hop - known as “on the bound” - counts as an out. “The bound rule changes the way everyone hits, runs and positions themselves on defense,” Heinick said. “It seems a little strange at first, but you can see how this made sense in the early days of the sport. After several years of debate, the rule was amended in 1865 to make the game more challenging. Even so, our players try to catch what they can on a fly, because we often play in open fields, and you never know which way a bounce will go.” The ball closely resembles today’s baseball in size, weight and firmness, meaning players must rely on technique, and sometimes tolerate some pain, to field it bare-handed. Pitchers throw underhand, batters overrun first base at their own risk, and any ball that first lands inside the firstand third-base lines is fair, even if it later rolls into foul territory. That rule keeps the corner infielders on their toes. The games are fiercely competitive while maintaining a strong tradition of good sportsmanship. Janson Field, a traditional baseball diamond built atop the borough’s former reservoir more than a century ago, has a rich baseball history. It once served as the home field for several Columbia semipro teams, including clubs led by player-manager Jimmy Sheckard, who grew up nearby and, at various

points during his major league career, led the league in home runs, stolen bases, walks and slugging percentage. The field also welcomed Black barnstorming teams throughout the 1920s and 1930s. T he Aug. 15 doubleheader marks the fourth straight year the Keystones have included Columbia on their schedule, and once again several borough residents will take the field. Spectators are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and a picnic lunch, and children will be invited onto the field to play between games. Portable restrooms will be available. People who arrive early are invited to join the players for their annual walk across Cherry Street to Mount Bethel Cemetery to pay tribute to Samuel Young, the Columbia community leader credited with bringing organized base ball to the Susquehanna Valley in the early 1860s.
