Coaching your own son can be an interesting dynamic.
You must treat every player equally, which often leads to an unfair amount of criticism falling on your child. In the same breath, it can be difficult for many players to respond to coaching from somebody they see as a parent.
Kevin and Logan Zynn found a way to make it work.
Kevin, head baseball coach at Pequea Valley High School, coached Logan, who was recently named to Pennsylvania State Baseball Coaches Association (PSBCA) Class 3A all-state team.
“It’s been a difficult journey, but a rewarding one,” Kevin said. “I am not an easy coach to get along with, and my son got the brunt of that. He was extremely happy the day that he could start driving himself and didn’t have to ride home with me from practices and games.”

A Champion Bus Driver

Martin is a state champion bus driver.
Martin, a bus driver within Pequea Valley School District since 2006, recently placed first in Pennsylvania’s 47th annual School Bus Safety competition in State College, competing against the top 50 school bus drivers from across the commonwealth.
The victory provided Martin, who has driven for Brightbill Transportation since 2001, the
opportunity to compete at the national competition in Austin, Texas, on June 27 and 28.
“I’ve been driving for 30 years,” Martin said. “I am an instructor, and I do take safety very seriously.”
Martin has competed at the state level numerous times, placing second in 2025’s competition, for which she was honored by state Rep. Bryan Cutler. The state competition involves a closed course with pivot points, parallel parking, right turns and railroad crossings.
Bags in the Valley

New Pequea Valley head football coach Andy Tibbins is hoping to see some new faces in Kinzers on Friday nights this fall.
Getting the community invested in the high school football team will be instrumental in that effort. The first step is the team’s upcoming inaugural “Bags in the Valley” cornhole fundraiser at the stadium on the evening of Saturday, Aug. 1.
For the fundraiser, the team and booster club are inviting those in the community to partner up in teams of two and compete in a traditional cornhole tournament, with cash prizes for the winners of the competitive “upper” division and noncompetitive “lower” division.
“Part of this change is a shift in the overall culture of how we function,” Tibbins said. “Not just as a football team, but as a booster club. I wanted it to be a community type thing.”
On the day of the rain-orshine event, gates will open at 4:30 p.m. Registration will begin at that time and run through 5:45 p.m.; the tournament will commence 15 minutes after that point. Pequea Valley’s football stadium is located on its primary campus, 4033 E. Newport Road, Kinzers.
Along with the cash prizes, there will be a 50-50 drawing and drawings for baskets with items donated by community members and businesses. The Lancaster Stormers, Laserdome and Rere’s Cafe were provided as examples of potential baskets. Individuals need to be present at the event to win.

Sadsbury Friends Meeting Sets Historical Talk
Sadsbury Friends Meeting, 1089 Simmontown Road, Gap, will host a talk by Connie Webster, titled “Caught in the Middle,” on Saturday, Aug. 1, at 10 a.m.
Webster is a descendant of Quaker Benjamin Gilbert, whose family was taken into captivity in 1780 by Native Americans. The American Revolution was challenging for both pacifist Quakers and Native Americans, and the 1779 Sullivan’s March destroyed the villages of four Native nations allied with the British. A year later, in retaliation, 11 Native Americans captured the Gilbert family of Jim Thorpe and burned their homestead and mill. Over a two-year period, the family endured a march to Montreal, and some of the Gilbert children were adopted by Native families. Although Benjamin did not survive, most of the family members were released and returned to Pennsylvania two years later. Webster will recount their journey.

“You have parameters that you’re judged to be within a certain amount of,” Martin explained. “Just making sure you get no demerits or deductions for that particular event. ... It’s teaching you reference points, and you’ve got to constantly be checking your mirrors. It’s really just trying to fine-tune your skills and make you more aware.”
Governor Josh Shapiro designated Oct. 20 through 24 as School Bus Safety week statewide last year.
“With another school year underway, school buses have returned to our roadways, and the Shapiro Administration is focused on getting young Pennsylvanians to and from school safely,” said Dios Arroyo, PennDOT director of driver licensing. “School Bus Safety Week is an opportunity for everyone to pause and realize just how much our own actions behind the wheel can affect innocent young lives.”
The national competition was highly competitive, with drivers from around the country, Martin said. She placed 18th in the nation in the “Class C” category after completing the written test on Saturday and the driving competition on Sunday.
Martin described that the national
competition combines some events, uses different standards and uses ropes for barriers instead of curbs or tape.
“I always get nervous when it comes to these kinds of things,” she said. “Being the first time, it was all brand new.”
Martin got into driving buses when she was the mother of a young child. With the cost of day care, it made sense to find a job where she could take her kid to work with her. She first drove as both a substitute driver and for Handi-Crafters in Chester County before landing with Brightbill and Pequea Valley.
The freedom of the job kept her on it, even after child care was not a great concern.
“You don’t necessarily have a boss on the bus,” she explained. “We’re the driver, but we wear many hats. We’re counselors, we’re nurses, we’re confidants, we’re moms. I just love that; I love being able to build the relationships that I’ve made with the students.”
In the past, Martin was the primary driver for the Pequea Valley football team. She’s touched the lives of hundreds of kids over her nearly 30 years as a driver.
“Once they’re on my bus, they’re my kids,” she said. “The Pequea Valley community, I cannot say enough. ... At every level, they are just a wonderful group of administrators to work for, and they just go above and beyond.”

Logan, a 2026 Pequea Valley graduate, was thrown right into the fire as a freshman on the baseball team. He found his way onto the pitcher’s mound right away and found instant success, registering a 2.67 earned run average (ERA) in 21 innings of work in his rookie season.
His numbers only improved from there. By his senior year, the right-handed workhorse tossed 64.1 innings with a 2.39 ERA, leading the Braves to the District 3 Class 3A playoffs before earning the all-state nod.
With a four-seam and two-seam fastball, as well as a changeup, curveball and slider, Logan described himself as a pitcher who simply finds ways to get outs.

On Saturday, Sept. 26, the team will hold a separate duck derby fundraiser. The team will send 1,000 rubber/plastic ducks down the Pequea Creek, with the top 10 finishers winning a cash prize. Individuals do not need to be present to win.
Nonetheless, the plate was where Logan saw the most development in his four years of high school. He hit just above .200 in his underclassmen years but exploded for a .371 batting average in his junior year before registering a .338 tally with two home runs in his senior season as the team’s primary shortstop, when he wasn’t toeing the rubber.
“When I was younger, I was scared to be totally truthful,” he said. “(Hitting) was never my strong suit. Then my junior year came around, and I kind of just stopped worrying. I was in my head, battling a mental game.”
Despite their struggles over the years, Logan did express his preference for tough coaching. It’s a large part of the reason why he’s continuing his baseball career at Penn State Harrisburg, where he plans to study business.
Harrisburg has an exceptional baseball program, winning the United East Conference last season and reaching the NCAA regional championship game. The program routinely dips into the Lancaster-Lebanon (L-L) League for talent, rostering eight L-L alumni last season.
“Coach (Ryan) Bown, he coaches a lot like my dad,” Logan said. “They hold you to a very high standard. They want what’s best for you, but they’re going to be hard on you when they need to be.”
Logan was one of only two L-L players to play in the PSBCA East/ West All-Star Game at Penn State in June. A week after he was selected, they reached out to Kevin and asked him to coach the “East” team.
“I waited to respond until I asked (Logan),” Kevin said. “He said, ‘That would be awesome.’”
In the past, the Braves have relied on more traditional fundraisers, like going from door to door or phone-a-thons. Tibbins and the booster club are hoping that people enjoy the fundraiser, build a connection with the team and then elect to come out and support them on Friday nights.
“We’re trying to get the community together,” said Jess Mowday, president of the Pequea Valley football boosters.
