t’s just a matter of chance that recent Pequea Valley graduates Jonah Zink and Aubrey Ressler are both headed to Kutztown University. Both chose the school for completely different reasons but will continue to run together on the Golden Bears’ cross-country and track teams at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) NCAA Division II school. Zink, who plans to study education, also toured PSAC schools like Millersville and West Chester, but he fell in love with Kutztown’s small-town, very Pequea Valley-like feel. “I’m not much of a city person, and Millersville and West Chester very much fit that description,” Zink said. “Kutztown is very by the farmland; it’s very open. It’s a block on either side of Main Street, and then it’s farmland from there. I really do appreciate that.” Ressler, on the other hand, knew she wanted to study something involving sports. She initially thought that sports medicine might be right for her, but she decided that sports management is a better path. Zink (left) and Ressler (right) with head coach Keith

July Is Disability Pride Month BY LOGAN MOYER

More than one in four U.S. adults have a disability. That is why July is Disability Pride Month. While it is not a nationally recognized event, Disability Pride parades and events have been recognized since 1990, commemorating the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), signed into law by President George H.W. Bush on July 26 of the same year. At Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development’s Circle of Friends R129655

Academy, inclusivity is at the forefront. At the academy, an early-learning child care center, children with disabilities are not separated from neurotypical kids, something that Penn Manor School District resident Maria Steele loves. Steele, who is a parent to two children at the academy, also works as a speech-language pathologist at Schreiber. Her mother also worked at Schreiber, and Steele herself attended preschool there. “It’s a really cool experience to be Maverick, a 2-year-old child with

LCCTF Invests in Students’ Futures BY JEFF FALK

Some would have you believe that money makes the world go ’round. The Lancaster County Career & Technology Foundation (LCCTF) is of the opinion that young people need money - or scholarships and grants - to make money. “Scholarships and workforce grants are investments in students’ futures,” said Jennifer Baker, who’s been the executive director of LCCTF for seven years. “They help students complete their education, enter the workforce with valuable skills and credentials, and pursue careers that offer long-term stability, growth and opportunity. Scholarships and workforce grants help remove financial barriers so students can access education, training, equipment and certifications needed to prepare for successful careers in high-demand fields.” Recently, LCCTF distributed a total of $87,000 - $46,500 in workplace grants and $40,500 in scholarships - to nearly 70 adult students and recently graduated high school students from almost every public school district in Lancaster County. The $87,000 total represented the most that LCCTF has ever awarded in its 23 years of blessing students. Scholarships are applied to costs related to continuing education. Workforce grants are used for uniforms, tools and testing fees for individuals beginning careers.
