The annual Intercourse
Heritage Days are back with a patriotic twist for America’s 250th anniversary.
This year’s beloved local two-day event will commence with a “Red, White and Blue” parade hosted by the Intercourse Library, in accordance with the country’s milestone birthday.
The event will kick off on Friday, June 19, with the aforementioned parade at 5:30 p.m. and will also continue on Saturday, June 20.
The library invites locals to participate in the parade wearing one of America’s signature colors, either on wheels or by walking; those interested must register by Saturday, June 13, at the library or on its website.
“We just really want people
to come,” said library director Catherine O’Sullivan. “Bring your scooters, bring your bikes, bring your wagons. It’s maybe not a traditional parade, but anything on wheels or by yourself in costume.”
All of the events will take place at Intercourse Community Park, 3730 Old Philadelphia Pike, Gordonville.

Pequea Valley School District (PVSD) and the Factory Ministries have once again partnered to bring the summer “Lunch and Learn” program to local families this summer.
The program, held every Wednesday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Paradise Community Park, 6 London Vale Road, Gordonville, will run from Wednesday, June 17, through Wednesday, July 29. The program will provide free lunch to all PVSD children who attend while providing them the opportunity to take part

What does it mean to have a Pequea Valley state of mind?
Speaking at Pequea Valley (PV) Secondary’s graduation ceremony on May 29 at Calvary Church in Manheim Township, district superintendent Erik Orndorff likened the school’s graduating class to the meaning of Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind.”
“The song celebrated possibility,” he said during his remarks. “It reminded people that no matter how hard things get, there is still greatness in the air, and if you believe, anything is possible. That’s the New York state of mind.”
The superintendent said he was inspired listening to PV senior Cameron Frank perform the song at the music department’s awards banquet earlier in May. Orndorff invited Frank, fitted in her cap and gown, to perform a portion of the song in front of the crowd at the ceremony.
A volleyball competition and a cornhole contest will highlight Heritage Days.

Organization Seeks Donations, Volunteers
Community Clearinghouse Agency Inc. is starting a new program to serve senior citizens in the Lancaster area. Those age 70 or older can receive money through the program to help with pressing needs, up to a maximum of $1,000. Funds may be used for needs such as groceries, utilities, doctor visits, medication, other
small bills, or various other needs. There is a one-time fee to cover the account setup.
The organization is seeking donations of a laptop and tablet with the Windows 11 operating system, as well as men’s suits, sizes 42 to 44. A van is also needed to deliver goods to clients. To help with these donations, call 717-669-9323.
Monetary donations are also needed to help raise funds for the program. Individuals and small businesses may send donations to the organization at 556 Church St., Suite 101, Mount Joy. Those who would like to serve as volunteers for the program may email dalevega 2@outlook.com or call the aforementioned number.

consisting of local eateries from 5 to 9 p.m., as well as a performance from the Ironwood Drive Band from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Activities for kids will also run from 5 to 9 p.m., featuring a pedal tractor pull at 6 p.m.
Saturday’s festivities will commence at 6:30 a.m. with a pancake and sausage breakfast that will run until 9:30 a.m., sponsored by the Intercourse Fire Company, which will also do firetruck demonstrations in the afternoon, preceded by a candy drop at noon. Friday’s food showcase will continue Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., featuring 25 tables of local vendors.
Another highlight of the
annual event is the various athletic tournaments, most notably the volleyball tournament. The tournament usually consists of around 70 teams of six people each, and Saturday’s finals always draw a large crowd. The bracket will start at 5 p.m., along with the pickleball tournament, which is rapidly growing in popularity.

Also returning for this year is The Factory Ministries’ cornhole tournament, which will commence at 10 a.m. on Saturday and will provide cash prizes to the top three teams. Show and Ryan and Friends at 12:30 and 1:30 p.m., respectively. There will also be petal carts drag racing at 3 p.m. and concerts by Tru Vintage Bluegrass and the Churchmen at 3 and 6:30 p.m., respectively.
The fireworks show, which returned at last year’s event, is back for 2026. The show will conclude the packed two days of events.
“We had one year where we didn’t do fireworks and instead did a laser show,” said Heritage Days committee member Michael Sensenig. “That did not work at all ... fireworks is still one of my favorite things. There’s just something about it.”
Sensenig estimated that Heritage Days pulls in around 5,000 people annually.
“Just seeing all your friends and the people that you know but don’t have the chance to sit and chat with when it gets too busy,” O’Sullivan said of the event’s appeal. “This is the beginning of summer. Everybody’s done with school. You have the chance to mingle and chat.”

Paradise Scouts Replace Flags
Cub Scout Pack 28 and Scouts BSA Troop 28 participated in a flag replacement day on May 16. It was the groups’ 27th year participating.
The Scouts replaced a total of 535 flags and three markers at seven

Orndorff commended PV’s graduating class for its victories in overcoming adversity, from surviving the COVID-19 pandemic in sixth grade to moving schools before their final year of high school. He addressed the crowd of graduates as “winners” and instructed them to keep going on the “treadmill of life.”
“That spirit is the Pequea Valley state of mind, and I want you to bring it with you tonight,” Orndorff said. “You leave here as graduates, but you will always be a part of this school and community, no matter where life takes you.”

Also, before Pequea Valley’s 118 graduating seniors walked across the stage, class president Shelyce Burke, Cassidy Hanna and Josie Gielenz delivered remarks.
PV Secondary principal John Trovato also took the stage just prior to graduates walking the stage to share the many accomplishments of the class, athletically to musically and beyond. He shared that 32% of the class will attend a four-year postsecondary institution, with the most popular being Millersville, West Chester, St. Joseph’s and Lebanon Valley.
He said that he will remember the class of 2026’s kindness above anything else.
Burke spoke of the class of 2026’s ability to overcome the unpredictable, noting that her graduating class is the first from Pequea Valley Secondary, which was completed prior to the 2025-26 school year. She likened this ability to how the class started the year, with a senior sunrise prior to the first day of school in August.

“We always have the pavilions set up with different activities,” said Lisa Eckert, director of early learning at Pequea Valley. “We have enrichment activities, we have crafts, games, free books. And then right before we finish up at 11:30, we serve lunch to all of the kiddos that are there, and then some of them will eat lunch there, and then others will take it and go.”
This summer will be the fifth iteration of the program, which serves mostly
elementary-age children. Any PVSD resident under the age of 18 may participate in the program; caregivers must attend with all children.
“Our main goal is making sure that all families in the district have everything they need,” Eckert said. “If we know a family might need some additional resources, we’re connecting with them at the park.”
Pequea Valley’s goal with the program aligns nicely with the Factory’s mission, which is addressing poverty and empowering those who are affected by it in eastern Lancaster County and the surrounding areas.

Located at 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, the Factory holds a variety of programs aimed at addressing poverty. It has an on-site market, which provides those in need with food that can be purchased with Factory Bucks, which can be earned through attending Factory-based programs.
“One of the big things we like to do is have Factory advocates come by during the Lunch and Learns and be available to kind of connect with families,” Eckert said.
Eckert asks that those interested in the program register ahead of time so that organizers can best prepare
lunch and activities. To register, search for “PV Building Braves” on Facebook and sign up via the Google Form.
Lunch usually consists of a sandwich, fruit and snack, Eckert said.
Throughout the summer, PVSD also brings in different guests during the Lunch and Learns. The Intercourse Library and different fire departments have attended in the past.
