For years, Pequea Valley’s youth football program struggled to field teams. Octorara’s program didn’t do much better. “We had just enough to put a team together,” said Bryant Guilford, director of Braves Youth Football. “We’re talking maybe two or three subs at the maximum, and that’s for a whole football team.” Pequea Valley was faced with the threat of not having teams at certain levels in the 2025 season. The southeast portion of Pennsylvania is the most densely populated part of a predominantly rural state. But that doesn’t mean all those residents have to travel far to enjoy Pennsylvania’s outdoor recreational activities. One of the main initiatives of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) is to provide and promote natural fun in and around water. “I think we really need to make people aware of all the opportunities around them,” said Andy Desko, who’s been the outreach and education coordinator for the Southeast Region of the PFBC for 18 years. “We want to help introduce folks to them right in their backyards. There are many accesses (to water) out there. People may not be aware that there are boat accesses near them. I want to inspire people to check out the opportunities.” The PFBC’s Southeast Region office is headquartered just north of the town of Lititz, at 255 W. hen Juliana Fieldsa is asked to complete a service project, she always manages to find the option that helps her four-legged friends. Fieldsa, an eighth-grader at Pequea Valley Secondary, is amidst a National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) project that allows her to help animals in need. She has partnered with Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue, a Chester County-based animal rescue that is in need of dog and cat food, toys, and more. “In NJHS, we get to choose from four different projects for our chapter service projects each year, and I always hope that there’s an animal option, because I think it’s really fun,” she said. Last year, Fieldsa filled a carload of supplies for Lucky Dawg. This year, she has set up an Amazon wishlist that includes toys, food, medical equipment, and other related items.
