Ever since Mark Williams retired as Pequea Valley’s music teacher in 2014, there was substantial interest in holding an alumni choir event.
The can kept being kicked down the road, all the way through the COVID-19 pandemic until Pequea Valley High School was set to be shut down in 2025.
Running It Back
Last year, the Pequea Valley Choral Alumni Association finally held its first performance, and it was a resounding success. Both Williams and current music instructor Nathan Bankert instantly became inundated with requests to do it again.
So, they are. There will be another alumni choral at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 8, at Pequea Valley Secondary (PVS) as part of PV’s
Chamber Singers’ spring concert. No admission fee will be charged for the event.
“Immediately, people were saying that we have to do this again,” Williams said. “So this is a response to that, but on a more limited basis than what we did last time.”
All PVHS alumni who sang in
concert choir, upperclassmen chorus or chamber singers are welcome to participate in the event. Last year’s alumni choir was a standalone event on the day after the Chamber Singers’ spring concert, but the choirs have been combined this year.
“We’re not doing nearly as much
repertoire,” Williams said. “Because we’re doing it on a Friday night, we don’t have the option of doing an all-day rehearsal during the day ... we’d like this to be an annual thing, and we’re feeling our way as to what people really want to do.”
There will be an optional rehearsal from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6, in the new choral room at PVS. Warmup on the day of the concert will start at 6 p.m. backstage.
The big draw for last year’s alumni choir was the chance to perform on the closing high school’s stage for the last time - the choir was the last performance of any kind on the stage. This year, it’s the opportunity to take the stage at the shiny new digs.

especially important,” said Gina Guatta, who’s been the supervisor of IU13’s Lancaster secondary transition programs for 12 years.
“For some, they’ve been told they can’t work. They feel proud when they make a contribution. Part of it is growing up, going to school, going to work and taking the next step.”

so deep,” said Bankert, a 2001 PVHS graduate.
“There’s just such a tradition of excellence in the choral program ... I think people are excited to be a part of that transition into something new, but still adding their place into that continued tradition of excellence in the new space.”
The alumni will open the show, performing “Splendor from Illuminaire” by Elaine Hagenberg and “How Can I Keep from Singing” by Gwyneth Walker. They will also join the current Chamber Singers at the end of their performance for “The Irish Blessing” by Eilers and “That Lonesome Road” by Nathaniel Shilkret.
Bankert noted that both his mother and older brother - both PVHS alumni - will perform at the event.
“We have so much history here, so many families
and so many bloodlines,” Bankert said. “To see the alumni join voices with the current singers is just like the icing on the cake.”

EMU Sets Open House for Prospective Instructors
Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) invites registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) with a passion for education to attend an upcoming open house to learn about nurse aide instructor opportunities. The event will take place on Thursday, April 23, from 6 to 7 p.m. at EMU’s Lancaster campus, located in the Listrak building at 100 W. Millport Road, Lititz. Designed for nurses with at least one year of longterm care experience, the open house offers an inside look at part-time teaching opportunities within EMU’s nurse aide training program.
EMU is currently hiring part-time nurse aide training instructors for both day and evening shifts. Instructors will educate and mentor students in
a collaborative, hands-on learning environment, helping them build the skills needed for successful health care careers. The teaching positions offer a flexible schedule and do not require working on weekends or holidays, or mandatory overtime.

Students Invited to Audition for Orchestra Ensembles
Allegro Orchestra’s Nextgen Youth Music program has opened registration for auditions for the high school Overture and Allegretto ensembles for the 2026-27 season.
Overture is a full symphonic orchestra for students in grades eight through 12. Through demanding music and professional instruction, students will develop advanced abilities on their instruments, as well as an understanding of how to perform in a full orchestra setting. Overture is under the direction of conductor Scott Kaliszak and assistant conductor Anthony Scheuerman.
The Allegretto Chamber Orchestra is Nextgen’s premier ensemble for advanced
students in grades eight through 12. Allegretto demands the utmost musicianship and professionalism of students in a chamber orchestra setting. Students in this ensemble receive guidance and instruction to perform standard repertoire and newly composed orchestral music. Allegretto is under the direction of founding conductor Brian Norcross and assistant conductor Francis Caravella.
During the 2025-26 season, Overture and Allegretto gave combined performances, providing a unique experience to students. Allegretto students had the opportunity to experience a full symphonic orchestra setting, and Overture students were challenged by some of Allegretto’s advanced repertoire.
Allegro Nextgen aims to develop a love of the
creative endeavor through exceptional, positive rehearsal and performance opportunities of varied, high-quality repertoire, with a wide range of performance ensembles. These musical opportunities are unique and designed to enhance what the students can learn in their normal scholastic musical experiences.
The Nextgen team believes that every child should have the opportunity to develop his or her intellectual and artistic capacity through playing a musical instrument and participating in a variety of musical ensembles and opportunities.
Auditions for the 202627 season of Overture and Allegretto will be held from Saturday, May 30, to Monday, June 1, at First United Methodist Church, 29 E. Walnut St., Lancaster. Parents may register their students at https://tinyurl .com/55934j9d.
For more information about Nextgen, visit www .nextgenyouthmusic.com.

to teach. But you can set expectations high and help (students) reach those expectations. For the most part, we’re getting them there.”
Both secondary transition programs require the entire school year to complete.
Participants in the work immersion programs spend part of their school days performing work assignments at business partners and the other part of their school days reviewing performances, correcting mistakes and learning curriculum in classroom settings. Among the participating businesses are Moravian Manor Communities in Lititz, Masonic Village retirement community in Elizabethtown, Willow Valley Communities in Willow Valley, Lancaster County Career and Technology Center and Lancaster General Health in the city.
One of the missions of the school-to-work programs, which emphasize community-based training in real-world settings, is to prepare students for the work immersion programs. Some of the instruction performed in the introductory programs are performed at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster and at IU13’s Burle Business Park location.
“The work immersion programs are for students in their final years of school, and the goal is to get them
employed,” said Guatta, a resident of West Hempfield Township. “We want these students to increase their skills to attain and maintain employment. We want them to be competitively employed. We want them to build confidence and experience.”
Currently, there are more than 80 students with disabilities enrolled in IU13’s work immersion and school-to-work programs.
The Lancaster secondary transition students are typically between 17 and 21 and reside in all 16 Lancaster County public school districts served by IU13.
Students are referred by their home school districts and then go through application and interview processes to gain entry into the programs.
“Some are students who fall through the cracks, and some are students who a typical high school setting isn’t going to help,” said Guatta. “They want to work. They want to make their ways in life. We want them to be successful. They want to be successful. Sometimes it’s hard for students with special needs to fit in. Maybe they didn’t have a dream, but they move forward when they see they can do something.”
Depending upon individual circumstances, secondary transition students receive instruction and guidance from IU13 job trainers and
mentors from participating business partners. Students learn time management, problem-solving skills, teambuilding, enhanced communications, goal setting, independence, social skills, résumé preparation and customer relation skills.
Success breeds success.
“I see (students) come to us as new interns and leave as graduates,” said Guatta. “I see how they’ve grown, and it’s internal growth. It’s a very different student than the one you’ve seen from the beginning. I feel fortunate that I get to be a part of their journeys.”
One of 29 intermediate units formed across the state in the 1970s, LancasterLebanon IU13 serves as
a bridge between local school districts and the Pennsylvania Department of Education and provides educational services, business services, technology support and professional development. Across all of its job training programs, IU13 works with over 700 business partners.
“We talk about work worth doing,” said Guatta. “This is work worth doing at its core. This is helping students become productive adults. We talk about trust and unity at IU13. We work together and build a team. I definitely see my programs as being at the core for what we do for society.”

Arbor Day Celebration Posted
The Friends of the Tanger Arboretum at LancasterHistory will host an April Nature Series event, “Leaf and Learn: A Celebration of Arbor Day,” on Saturday, April 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the LancasterHistory Museum & Research Center, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster. A variety of activities will be available. Lancaster County senior naturalist Lisa Sanchez will lead tree walks at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., and Len Eiserer will present “Tanger’s America250 Tree and the Patriot Oak” at noon. The Nodding Onion Band will perform post-rock music featuring electrical frequencies from plants
from 10 a.m. to noon. Light refreshments will be available while supplies last, and vendors will offer information from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Kids’ activities will include a story time and craft, suggested for those ages 3 to 7, at 10 a.m. and a nature scavenger hunt, suggested for those ages 6 to 12, at noon.
A bitternut hickory tree (Carya cordiformis) planted in commemoration of the United States’ 250th birthday will be dedicated at 11:15 a.m. The bitternut hickory was selected due to Lancaster’s ties to hickories. When settlers arrived in the Lancaster area in the 1700s, hickory trees were prevalent, earning the town its first name, Hickorytown. Hickory forests were vast and thick and cultivated by local Native Americans for food and medicinal purposes. The tree was instrumental to early life in Lancaster, also providing wood for furniture, flooring, and tools. All events are free and open to the public. The event will take place rain or shine, with most programs held outdoors in fair weather and moved indoors in the event of rain. For more information and registration for individual activities, visit www.lancasterhistory.org/ arborday. Questions can be directed to Emily Miller at emily.miller@lancaster history.org.
