WINTER EVENT CALENDAR townlively.com/ events
ookshelves, reading areas and other public spaces will be transformed into an indoor miniature golf course for a day as the Intercourse Library presents a Mini Golf Event on Saturday, Feb. 28, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The library will be closed that day so that the course can be set up inside the stacks. There will be 19 holes of golf offered. Golf balls and putters, as well as score sheets, will be provided. Food, including sandwiches, hot dogs and desserts, will be available to purchase in the library’s one-room schoolhouse area throughout the day. A fee will be charged per person, and tee time reservations will be taken in five-minute increments. Walks-ins will be welcome, but they may experience a wait.
The librar y is utilizing a company called Library Mini Golf, which visits the library and sets up the holes. “You can make the greens as long as you want. This (company) will set up the holes depending on the layout of the library,” explained Tammy McCauley, president of the Intercourse Library board. According to www.library minigolf.com, the company built its first indoor golf course inside a library in Connecticut in 2005 to raise funds for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Themed “Golf for the Gulf,” the event raised nearly $10,000 and drew more than 400 visitors. The website states, “The event succeeded in offering a fun and positive way to come together for an important event, reinforcing the idea of the town library as a gathering Intercourse Library staff members Caleb place for the community.” (left) and Becky Robinson At the Intercourse Library, Robinson encourage local residents to play mini golf See Mini Golf pg 8 at the library on Feb. 28. Writing Toward Recovery, Healing and Hope BY CAT SHANNON
Every week, Scott Feifer gets people to share their innermost thoughts. He’s not a clergyman or a therapist. He’s a writer, and he believes in the power of the pen. Feifer, who taught language arts for almost 30 years at Hempfield School District, has been leading writing circles since his days as a teacher. He left his public school position in 2020 and has since focused on the transformative power of writing. Feifer leads writing circles at Manos House, a residential treatment program for young men in Columbia; Blueprints for Addiction Recovery; Domestic Violence Services; and the Lancaster County Youth Intervention Center, among other locations throughout Lancaster and neighboring counties. “We run from our stories and the trauma and the hard things we’ve experienced,” he said. “But when we write it down, we realize that ultimately, there’s no running from our past.” Ironically, the man who gets people to bare their souls on paper wasn’t always so open. In 1998, he signed up for a summer writing workshop at Millersville University. As part of the class, students shared their writing with their peers. “I didn’t want to reveal something so private,” Feifer recalled. “I decided I would go to the first class, but if I was uncomfortable or I didn’t like it, I would leave during the break.” Not only did he stay for the class, but he also found a new outlet for his emotions.
