eacock Township residents who are interested in keeping informed about what’s happening in the community and with local government are invited to visit the township’s newly revamped website at www.leacocktwp.com. Among the features on the website is a new “Notify Me” button. Those who register for this option will receive the agenda and minutes from the various township boards, including the Board of Supervisors, the Municipal Authority, the Planning Commission and the Zoning Hearing Board. “It is a lot more user-friendly than the old website, and there is a new feature on our website that you can sign up for,” explained township manager Chris Slaymaker. “When a meeting agenda or minutes are posted, you can get an email or text message about it or both.” He explained that the agendas

have to be available at least 24 hours before the meeting. The minutes are approved by each board after the meeting. “Any voting decision that the board makes has to be on the

agenda as a listed item,” explained Slaymaker. “The Board of Supervisors or any elected or appointed board cannot make a decision without it being on the agenda. That’s why the commonwealth

requires that the agenda be posted 24 hours before the meeting.” Those who choose to sign up will also receive calendar events via text or email, including dates of upcoming meetings such as Board of Supervisors meetings and other notifications such as when the township office is closed for a holiday. “We want to provide information. Our old website served us well at the time, but it (needed updating),” said Slaymaker. “Our job is transparency, and we want to put the information out there and make it readily available. (For example), if someone wants to know what the municipal authority is doing at their next meeting, they can see that.” Another feature on the website can be found under “Files and Forms,” where residents can get permits such as zoning permits, permits for a food truck, a building permit or a yard sale permit. “It’s See Leacock Township pg 5

They’re excited about something I’m excited about.” Simply put, the planetarium is one of the most popular attractions at a place - the North Museum of Nature and Science, located at 400 College Ave., Lancaster - that has so many interesting exhibits to experience. Admission to the planetarium, which offers shows mainly on Saturdays and Sundays at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., is included with admission to the North Museum.

“I think doing this with Briella will make our relationship even stronger,” said Kirk. “We’ll have a bond in a different way. She’s my firstborn and only daughter. We get along. We respect each other. She listens and does what she’s told.” The bond that Kirk and Briella share is firefighting and community service. Kirk has been a volunteer firefighter with Garden Spot Fire Rescue, 339 E. Main St., New Holland, for 25 years, while Briella, a ninth-grader at ELANCO Online Virtual Academy, has officially been a probationary firefighter for about three months. But to say that Briella is following in her father’s footsteps might be selling her individuality a bit short. “My dad has always been one of the people I looked up to,” said Briella. “I’ve always watched him run out of the house and put on that blue light. I’m very, very proud of him because when he shows up, he shows out and does stuff on the scene.” Briella spent parts of the last six summers attending a cadet camp designed for school-age youths interested in becoming first responders, learning about various pieces of firefighting apparatus, learning to roll hoses and engaging in firefighting techniques. Since becoming a probationary firefighter with Garden Spot Fire Rescue, she’s gone out on a number of calls, for about a half-dozen of which Kirk has been the driver of the fire engine. planetarium before,” said Penkunas. “They hear there’s a planetarium, and they get excited. A lot of people come here just for the planetarium. Planetariums aren’t super common, and they aren’t easy to find.” “I always want people to think astronomy is cool and accessible,” continued Penkunas. “Space is far away, but we’re not far away. I think it’s important for people to have an interest in astronomy.” The planetarium, which was built in the 1960s and renovated in 2012, is located on the main floor of the three-floor structure that houses the North Museum of Nature and Science. The planetarium is surrounded by 12 main sections, each featuring its own themed exhibits , displays and collections. “I’d say that the planetarium is a companion to the rest of the museum,” said Penkunas. “It’s one of the ways we drive people to come here. shows for adults and kids throughout the year, including “Night Sky Tours” and other seasonal presentations. That’s a total of more than 240 of the 30- to 40-minute presentations annually. The planetarium also periodically offers shows on dinosaurs and super volcanoes, as well as select documentaries. “I think we have a really good understanding of our solar system as it exists now,” said Penkunas. “We have a good understanding of the sun. But there are still a lot of questions. We have a really good idea of how planets formed, but we don’t know a lot of the specifics. We know a lot more than we ever did before, but a lot of the exact mechanisms of astronomy are still very much being researched. Overall, there’s still a lot to learn.” The North Museum’s planetarium receives more than 2,500 visits each year. Some come from curious outof-town tourists, but mainly they are from Lancaster County adults and students who want to learn about other worlds, as well as the world around them. “A lot of times it’s people who have never been to a

“For me, there’s definitely a coolness factor to it,” said Penkunas. “I think some of it is because we want to know where we exist in the universe. Astronomy can tell us a lot about physics, about the Earth and the nature of reality on a really big scale. I think astronomy just being the study of the stars is just very appealing to a lot of people. A lot of people want to explore the world. Earth has been well charted, and now people are looking up for new stuff.” The unidirectional planetarium at the North Museum is physically made up of 70 seats and a 40-foot-diameter dome. A projection system uses special lenses to portray images of stars, galaxies, moons, constellations and other celestial bodies on the auditorium’s ceiling. “It’s more of a traditional movie-style planetarium where everyone faces the same way,” said Penkunas, a resident of Lititz. “The main thing with the planetarium is to get more space education out there. The goal is to educate about space and stars in fun and immersive ways.” Based on a rotating schedule, the planetarium offers about 15 to 20 different

Those musicians are masters of flutes, saxophones, trumpets, tubas, bar itones , tromb ones , French horns, snare drums, timpani and clarinets. “These are people who have a commonality,” said Samly. “It’s a diversity of musicians who have a love of music. They have an enduring passion. Our rehearsals are like twohour workouts. We see each other frequently, and we enjoy each other’s company.” “They’re very talented,” he continued. “We have a wide range of experiences, and most have been playing for quite a while. We put on a professional performance. You have to enjoy it, but there’s a professional aspect to it.” The Lititz Community B and ’s or i g ins c an b e traced to the late 1800s and the now-defunct Lititz Concert Band. That spirit of community is the band’s enduring legacy. “We have to be one of the oldest and one of the biggest volunteer bands in the county,” said Samly. “We’re a mainstay in the Lititz community. It’s a summer band,” said Samly, a clarinet-playing resident of Manheim Township. “We’re happy to go anywhere in the community, and we’re always looking for good venues to play. We do have a band that is willing to be part of the community. People come out and enjoy the band. There’s something for the participants, and there’s something for the community. The community band plays at the Fourth of July celebration at Lititz Springs Park, A Taste of Lititz, Venture Lititz’s Farmers Market, other special events, retirement homes and the Lititz Public Library. The musicians of the Lititz Community Band are volunteers, and most of their performances are free to attend. “I think it’s a passion,” said Samly. “You take years of lessons growing up, and you want to keep those skills. We get so caught up in our everyday lives; it’s hectic and stressed. But this is an outlet. I think people look for that outlet. People have to love it to do it, or they wouldn’t do it. They’re people who thoroughly enjoy what they do.

Music makes us human. “Music is very important because it brings people together,” said Matt Samly, who’s been the director of the Lititz Community Band for four years. “We listen to it in our cars. Out of anything in this world, it’s music that has that common element. Look at audiences at concerts; it’s just anybody. It’s always something for people to look forward to.
