t’s fitting that the next fundraiser for the Leo’s Helping Paws nonprofit group will be held on Valentine’s Day. That’s emblematic of the love Kathy Styer and Beth Buchter have for dogs. Styer and Buchter co-founded Leo’s Helping Paws in July 2014. The pair were volunteers for another rescue organization before electing to branch out on their own. “At that time, we were seeing a lot of need,” said Styer, who is the president. “There were more rescues that were being formed, and the need for vet care was the No. 1 issue with all the dogs that they would rescue, and it’s costly. In order to get them adopted, first they had to be vetted, because that’s protocol for a rescue.” Leo’s Helping Paws’ mission is to provide financial assistance for veterinary care to nonprofit all-volunteer dog rescue groups in Pennsylvania and neighboring states. The organization, made up of 40 volunteers, has also assisted outfits in Ohio, New York, Maryland, New Jersey, West Virginia, Virginia, Connecticut, and Delaware. Anyone wishing to donate, volunteer, or apply for a grant can go to www.leoshelpingpaws.org. Leo’s Helping Paws, based in Lancaster city, has awarded an average of more than 80 grants per year totaling approximately $780,000 in its existence. “I am a big dog lover,” said Buchter, who is the treasurer. “I’ve always had compassion for animals. It’s just in me. It’s my nurturing instinct.” The nonprofit is named after

Leo, a tri-colored corgi that was adopted in 2009. “We’re just very passionate about rescue because there’s so many dogs out there that need homes,” said Styer. Styer said most of the dogs the organization helps are abandoned or come from a breeding facility. “Because of some switches in the laws, the breeders will reach out to rescues to take the dogs when they’re done breeding them,” she said. In October, there was a rescue in Delaware that rescued 61 dogs from a breeder facility. “We gave them $10,000 to treat every dog, to get their initial exams and all the bloodwork and things like that,” said Styer. “That was our largest grant ever.”

Styer and Buchter also aid dogs as a side project unrelated to Leo’s Helping Paws. “(Recently) Beth and I, we picked up two 7-monthold corgis that didn’t sell from a breeder in Honey Brook,” said Styer. Leo’s Helping Paws usually holds one fundraiser a month. One of its biggest is the annual bake sale. This year’s event will be Saturday, Feb. 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ephrata Agway, 731 W. Main Street. Hot dogs, snacks, and beverages will also be for sale. There will be chances to win prizes, as well. Grace Point Church in Paradise will offer a free community meal on the second Tuesday of each month, beginning on Jan. 13, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The dinner is free and open to everyone in the community. This is a new program for the church that is designed to offer people a homemade meal and fellowship with others. No registration is required. “We know there are people in our community who are dealing with food insecurity. We don’t know who they are or what age, but it doesn’t matter to us,” said lead pastor Tim Rogers. “We are trying to offer some support for people in our community.” The buffet-style meal will be served in the church’s lower-level fellowship hall. About 15 church volunteers will work to prepare the meal in the church kitchen, greet people and perform cleanup duties. “There will be a main course, some sides and dessert and coffee,” Rogers noted. “There will be signage there to direct people. They can park in the main parking lot.” Grace Point Church’s meal, offered in partnership with The Factory Ministries, will be similar to that offered by other churches, including Leacock Presbyterian Church in Paradise. “We have been working with The Factory Ministries on this, which is right down the road, and Leacock, which has been doing (a free meal) for a while,” said Rogers. “A couple of people who are coordinating our meal went See Free Meal pg 3

We are grateful for their support and knowing what to expect.” “(Leacock Presbyterian Church) offers a community meal on the fourth Thursday, and we are adding ours on the second Tuesday of the month to space them out to provide the community a couple of meals during the month,” he added. Rogers noted that the church works closely with The Factory Ministries, which will also promote the meal with its clients. “Our community support is funneled through The Factory,” he noted. “Many churches in our community find it helpful to have service efforts coordinated through one place. Instead of hosting our own food bank or clothing bank, we centralize it (through The Factory). We encourage our church volunteers to participate and work at The Factory. As a church, we try to

stay engaged with programs at The Factory.” For example, church members volunteer during bingo held at The Factory on the fourth Thursday of each month from 1 to 3 p.m. “(Bingo) brings in 100-plus people,” Rogers said. “People from our church are there volunteering, and we get to know some of the folks in our community who we are connecting with.” He said that The Factory provides connections between its clients and local churches. “If someone comes to The Factory, they meet with an advocate and the advocate can connect them to a church for ongoing support. They might get help with rent or food, but they get more than that - a connection in our community,” he noted. “That’s why our meal is coordinated with The Factory, so they can cross-promote it. We want The Factory participants to know they can come into a place that is safe and

trustworthy … to grab food.” Although he does not know what the turnout will be for the first community meal on Jan. 13, Rogers encourages local neighbors to give it a try. “It is as simple as it sounds. It’s a free community meal, and it is open to anyone who would like to come,” he stated. “For some, it may be connecting and meeting other people. For others, it may be (a way to deal) with food insecurity.

“We are looking forward to it as a new way to serve the community,” he added. “We hope it will be helpful for some folks.” Grace Point Church is located at 8 S. Singer Ave., Paradise. your ornaments.” Attendees may use their own design or choose one of Smucker-Beidler’s suggestions. “I have handouts of traditional Pennsylvania German designs that were used on actual pottery in the 1700s, and I show how to transfer those designs and start carving them,” she said. “I think it’s important when you’re learning these traditional crafts that you go back to the source, so I made an image collection, and these are all images from the 1700s and 1800s. They’d dig up that clay and process it and make it into functional items. This was something that was brought over from Europe, but it’s a very early American craft. They needed functional items to use. They started making pottery, and the potters would make it and then sell it.” Smucker-Beidler explained how the process works. “In my workshops, everyone has a prepared slab of clay,” she said. “The slab has been rolled out, smoothed, painted with the white slip (which is watered-down clay), and gotten to a point where it is what we call cheddar cheese-hard or leather-hard. That means that it’s not floppy, it’s not wet, but it’s not so hard that it’s going to break off in chunks. It’s that sweet spot where you can take the cookie cutters and cut out the shapes that you want for

The Bleak House

Submitted by Colleen Bowden, board member of the Historical Society of Salisbury Township. Some information provided by www. newspapers.com. There was a time when those who could afford it were able to spend the warm months in the countryside in summer homes. The rolling hills of the Gap and Kinzer areas were situated near small towns, not too distant from major cities, along the train route and later the trolley route, providing a countryside respite. On a hill in Kinzers, along Route 30, stood a home that was once renowned in Salisbury Township. It was described in old newspaper articles with words such as “oddity,” “cumbersome,” “massive,” “gingerbread” and “a gloomy Victorian monstrosity.” Known as the Sanders Estate, the Hensel Home and the Bleak House, this home was a grand sight in the area and was noted for its height, massive overhanging eaves, glass cupola, Victorian scrollwork and ornamental designs, according to the Sunday News dated Aug. 5, 1962. According to that same news article, Dr. Sanders, a dentist, had built the home in the 1870s. Newspaper articles from the Lancaster Daily Intelligencer from July 1881 and June 1882 announce his arrival from St. Louis, Mo. Sanders passed away in 1893 but had stopped coming to the house a few years prior. The home sat mostly empty, except for an Amish family renting

the back of the house, until the Hon. W.U. Hensel purchased the home in 1893. Hensel made some changes, expanding the porch and adding rooms. This was when the mansion

became dubbed “The Bleak House,” in reference to Charles Dickens’ novel as was reported in the Sunday News on July 8, 1928. In contrast to the gloomy name See The Bleak House pg 5

encourages adding some personal touches. “We talk about how to take those traditional designs that I’ve copied from some of them and how to make them your own,” she said. “The first step in a folk art is learning what has come before us, but the real step where you’re really showing your individuality is when you take that and make it your own in some way. I’m amazed at how different all of the ornaments look after people take my class, and I get ideas as an artist as well.” Smucker-Beidler is retired after a 33-year teaching career, which included stints at Landisville Primary Center and York Suburban High School. “I had access to all of the sup-

plies, and as I’ve just really delved into the Pennsylvania German traditions and folk arts and especially the visual imagery,” she said. “All of that media was there for me to play with, to see how it translated, and I wanted to learn the history to teach my students the history of what they were doing.” Smucker-Beidler now holds a variety of workshops, with 11 scheduled between now and March 14.“I’ve had some great experiences with a grandparent bringing a grandchild and the two of them doing a workshop together, (as well as) mothers and daughters,” Smucker-Beidler said. “I love that intergenerational feel of having a lot of people learning things together, that it’s an experience that

Hensel hosted lively garden parties, Fourth of July parties and dances, with guests traveling to Kinzers via carriage and train. Hensel had served as Lancaster County Chairman for the Democratic Party and Attorney General for Pennsylvania, among other business ventures, opening his Bleak House doors to entertain political figures and foreign diplomats. It was reported that even John Philip Sousa paid a visit, after his band performed at Rocky Springs Park in Lancaster. The house held treasures dated back to the Revolutionary War era that history and antique enthusiasts would long to see.

After Hensel’s passing in 1915, the Bleak House was passed down to his daughter, Elizabeth Nauman. Family members occupied the home until it was sold to Lyle W. Ratliff, an antique dealer from Sadsburyville, in 1947, according to the Sunday News published March 23, 1947. The Lancaster New Era reported that Bleak House was purchased by the Gap VFW in 1950. In 1962, the Industrial Era home/VFW was razed due to an internal fire in the barroom. What’s left of this iconic building? A stone foundation from one of the structures and irreplaceable treasures that once adorned the interior and exterior of the home that may still be there. There are also written stories where some share their perceptions of this dark mansion on the hill.
