Students Invited To Enter Contest K e e p Pe n n s y l v a n i a Beautiful has announced the Litter Hawk Youth Award Program, a recognition program for students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Kids will complete a project specific to their grade level. They may participate individually or as part of a lesson initiated by schools, homeschooling programs, Scout troops, 4-H clubs, environmental clubs, or other groups. The Litter Hawk Youth Award Program is a way for kids to share their hope, optimism, and concerns about litter and inspire others to care for their communities. This year’s theme is “Celebrate America250 - Keep It Beautiful!” in support of the country’s 250th anniversary on July 4, 2026. Students in kindergarten through fourth grade will make a poster, those in fifth grade will write an essay, and those in sixth grade will make a video. The deadline for participating is Saturday, Jan. 31, 2026. T h e f i r s t- a n d s e c-
ond-place winners in each grade level will be awarded certificates. All participants will receive recognition of participation with a Litter Hawk sticker. Winners will be announced on Saturday, April 2, 2026, in coordination with an awards ceremony at the Pennsylvania State Capitol, where all winning entries will be on display as part of the 2026 Litter Hawk Youth Award exhibit. All winners and their families, guardians, and teachers are welcome to attend. Special guests will include representatives from the Pennsylvani a Depar tment of Environmental Protection (DEP) and America250PA. The arrival of a new year is a time of celebration for people across the globe. It is customary to mark the occasion with fireworks, countdowns, and champagne. For those who indulge a little too much on New Year’s Eve or stay up well past midnight, Jan. 1 may be a day to recuperate. Dress warmly and gather friends around a firepit or outdoor fireplace. Swap s’mores for cheese cubes on sticks that can be made warm and slightly melted over the open flames. Float or paddle. Take in nature from the water. Although these types of events may be better in warmer climates, those who are courageous enough to brave the elements can spend some time kayaking or floating on waterways that have not frozen over. 1719 Museum Plans Candlelit Event The 1719 Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street, will host a candlelit evening of stories and songs on Friday, Jan. 9. Guests will experience traditions passed down through generations among Lancaster County’s Indigenous and Mennonite communities. Tours will run every half hour starting at 4 p.m., with the final tour slot at 8 p.m. Guests will spend 30 minutes in the Lancaster Longhouse and 30 minutes in the Herr House. In the Lancaster Longhouse, musicians will play and tell stories about the Indigenous flute. In the Herr House, guests will hear stories of music and songwriting that were important to Mennonites in the 18th century. A cappella singers will perform English translations of hymns from the Ausbund, a historic Mennonite hymnal used by the Herr family. In the visitor center, children may use coloring pages and art supplies to create their own fraktur songbook
bookplate. This craft is a Pennsylvania German tradition of making decorative name labels on the inside cover of personal books. Joe on the Go Coffee Co’s mobile café will be on-site with hot drinks and baked goods available for purchase. The museum store will be open for the event. There is a fee for admission, with a discount for youths ages 6 to 16. Children age 5 and under will receive complimentary admission.
