A Different Kind Of Nativity Experience BY COURTNEY MENGEL
For several years, the impact team at Living Light Mennonite Church has hosted community outreach events, one of which has been a clothing giveaway around the holidays
where clothing and shoes for infants through adults are available for free. However, the team decided to switch things up a bit this year and plan a Christmas event. After the team brainstormed ideas, the Outdoor Nativity Experience was born. See Nativity Experience pg 4

’Tis The Season For A Giving Tree BY COURTNEY MENGEL
he COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging for many people and organizations, among them Millersville Area Meals on Wheels (MAMOW). Located at 121 N. George St., Millersville, MAMOW was founded in 1988 with the mission of delivering meals to people who live in the Penn Manor School District and are temporarily or permanently ill or handicapped, are elderly and living alone or homebound, or are convalescing. Due to the pandemic and the rising cost of food, MAMOW was unable to host its pancake breakfast fundraiser, which helps the organization offset the costs for homedelivered meals to its clients. After brainstorming ways to raise funds and increase food donations, Joanne DeRenzis, executive director
from these sales will go to clients who are unable to pay for their meals. Currently, MAMOW serves about 60 clients. “It’s been really tough on us through the pandemic with the high cost of food,” said DeRenzis. “I think our clients are really in need right now, too. (MAMOW) is a good way to keep them in their homes and keep them fed.” Anyone who is interested in volunteering or is in need of meals for a loved one may call 717-872-2415 or email office@mamow.org. Girls On The Run Goes Live! BY ANN MEAD ASH
Coming off a successful 5K at Millersville University in November, Katie Sandoe, executive director of Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster, and Jen West, program director, are excited about the 2022 season. “We are looking ahead to spring,” said West. “We are excited to be back to a 10-week season in person.” Indeed, the program hopes to have teams in every Lancaster County school district for the spring semester, and coaches will See GOTR pg 6

of MAMOW, decided to set up a giving tree. The giving tree, which can be found inside MAMOW, is decorated with handmade ornaments from volunteers at Excentia Human Services, a nonprofit organization in Lancaster County that assists people with developmental needs and autism. The ornaments are labeled with either a requested gift card or food item that a person will purchase and donate to MAMOW in one of the bins under the giving tree. Some of the items listed on the ornaments are sugar, flour, canola oil, olive oil, apple cider vinegar, white vinegar, spaghetti sauce, boxed pasta, and saltine crackers, as well as gift cards to John Herr’s, BJ’s, and Giant. MAMOW is also selling Gertrude Hawk chocolate bars as well as handmade cards. The proceeds

day, Dec. 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. Typically, live Nativities consist of walkthrough experiences with different scenes and actors. The Outdoor Nativity Experience, however, will feature a petting zoo station, a craft station where children will make a Christmas tree ornament, a storytelling station about the legend of the candy cane, and a live Nativity. There will be a donkey, sheep, goats, chickens, and rabbits from Sunset Boarding Stables in the petting zoo station, and some of these animals will make an appearance in the live Nativity. The live Nativity, which will tell the story of the birth of Jesus, will feature Christmas carols. Children from the church will act in the two showings at 6:45 and 7:45 p.m. There will also be snacks, hot chocolate, cookies, and a bonfire. Coaching requires a commitment of up to three hours a week, and Sandoe noted that GOTR coaches need not be teachers. “The majority of sites are schools, but you don’t have to be a teacher to coach,” she said. “We would love that our coaches reflect the community that we serve,” she said, adding that coaches need not even live within the district where they coach. West added that mothers, fathers, and community members can be coaches. “You don’t have to be a runner,” she said. “We welcome anybody and everybody to coach girls.” Volunteer GOTR coaches receive benefits, including guaranteeing a daughter a spot on a team and receiving a discount for her registration. Free CPR and first aid training are offered, and all coaches are trained to lead teams. “It’s a chance to be a positive role model and inspiration to the girls - a leader and someone to talk to,” said West. According to Sandoe, coaches have told her that they witness positive changes

GOTR is a youth development program that encourages confidence, character, care, connection, competence, and contributing to community. One international study found that 85% of girls in the program showed gains in those areas, along with increased long-term physical activity and critical life skills. Registration for the 2022 spring season will open Tuesday, Feb. 1, and the season will begin on Monday, March 7. The GOTR 5K presented by OAL will be held on Saturday, May 21, at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster. The fall 5K at Millersville attracted 1,000 runners, including 400 girls, running buddies, and immediate family members. “If you’re interested in learning more about coaching … we encourage (you) to reach out,” said Sandoe. The Mennonite Life campus on Millstream Road in Lancaster offers a Visitors Center, formerly called Mennonite Information Center, which introduces guests to Mennonites and hosts the Biblical Tabernacle Experience. In the Collections building, visitors can enjoy the Mennonite Life Museum or research using its archives and library. The museum in Willow Street has gone by many names, starting with The Hans Herr House. Realizing the house was built by Christian Herr, and there was no definitive documentation on whether Christian’s father, Hans, ever lived there, the name changed more than a decade ago to the 1719 Herr House & Museum. The 1719 Museum simplifies the existing name. At the 1719 Museum, visitors can immerse themselves in 18th-century life through a guided visit to the 1719 Herr House. Visitors will also learn about the history and cultures of Native Americans by experiencing a full-sized replica of an indigenous longhouse, interpreted by a guide.
