Local Students To Perform “The Nutcracker” bout 70 Lancaster County students will dance alongside professional dancers from the U.S., Japan, and Ukraine in performances of “The Nutcracker” sponsored and directed by Viktor Yeliohin, owner of the Viktor Yeliohin International Ballet Academy in Lancaster. Yeliohin has been directing “The Nutcracker” performances in Lancaster for nearly three decades. The 2021 show marks the 28th year. After a year off, the classic holiday ballet will return to Lancaster with performances on Friday, Dec. 3, at 6:30 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 4, at 1 and 6 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 5, at 2:30 p.m. at Lancaster Mennonite Performing Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Many students begin at age 5 and continue to perform until they graduate high school, making the show part of the fabric of their family holiday traditions. The Willow Street United Church of Christ Preschool will host its second annual Santa drive-through event.
Established in 1980, the preschool at Willow Street United Church of Christ (WSUCC) aims to prepare children for a positive kindergarten experience by providing a nurturing environment to help them grow socially and emotionally. As part of this mission, the WSUCC Preschool has traditionally hosted a breakfast with Santa event. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the breakfast was replaced with a Santa drive-through last year. See Santa Drive-Through pg 4

New Program from pg 1 24/7 to attending school can be challenging for kids, which is why Lampeter-Strasburg School District (LSSD) recently implemented a new prekindergarten program through a collaboration with the Owl Hill Learning Center. At Lampeter Elementary School, 1600 Book Road, Lancaster, the Pre-K Counts program provides half-day prekindergarten to eligible 3and 4-year-olds. The program is designed for children who are at risk of school failure and are living in families earning up to 300% of the federal income poverty level, such as a family of four earning $72,900, who may also be English language learners or have special needs. The Pre-K Counts classroom at Lampeter Elementary School can host 20 students in the morning and 20 students in the afternoon. For the 2021-22 school year, there will be rolling admission until the program reaches capacity. Owl Hill Learning Center started its first Pre-K Counts program in the Manheim Township School District in 2007. Since then, it has expanded into three classrooms with seven teachers serving 60 students. A unique aspect to the pro-

Owl Hill Learning Center uses resources that are instructionally and developmentally appropriate under the early learning standards of the state of Pennsylvania, which implements a curriculum designed to help children grow academically and socially. “The program is more of a seamless transition into kindergarten,” said Julie Mathers, PreK Counts coordinator at Owl Hill Learning Center. “It prepares kids for being in a school building.” Families that are financially eligible can enroll their children by calling or texting Mathers at 717-435-0593 or by emailing lssdpkc@gmail.com. “We want to offer opportunities to share our cultural heritage with the community,” said Elise Bullington, event chairperson for Lancaster Liederkranz’s Christkindlmarkt. “We do that through our fests. A big thing in Germany are these Christmas markets. They are an opportunity to bring people together, for local artisans to showcase their talents and for wonderful family fun.” Christkindlmarkt will be held on the Liederkranz grounds, 722 S. Chiques Road, Manheim, on Saturday, Dec. 12, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. “We will have more than 30 different vendors selling anything from candies to traditional German nutcrackers, ornaments, Moravian stars,” Bullington stated. “We’ll have performances by our singing groups, including the mixed chorus (and) the Hobby Chor, which is our men’s singing group, plus caroling, and we have a gentleman who plays the accordion and he roams around playing Christmas music.” Food is a highlight of the festival, with options offered both outside and indoors. “Inside, we’ll have sit-down dining,” Bullington explained. “It’s more formal and will feature our German platters.” Inside dining choices include a half-chicken, pork schnitzel, Schweinshaxe (German pork knuckle), and goulasch. All are served over spaetzle and include a choice of red cabbage or Gurkensalat (cucumber salad) plus apple strudel. “Outside, we’ll have three kinds of soup - ham and bean, potato, and kielbasa and sauerkraut - as well as jumbo hot dogs, kielbasa, bratwurst sandwiches, and currywurst boats,” she said. Homemade pierogies are a popular food choice, she noted, adding that flavors vary each year, but will include potato and cheese, potato and bratwurst, potato and roast garlic, pork and sauerkraut, and apple cinnamon. New flavors this year will be pumpkin pie and Hungarian hot wax, a type of hot pepper. “All the pierogies are made in-house with love by our ‘pierogie posse,’” Bullington explained, noting that members meet weekly for several weeks leading up to the event to prepare the pierogies.
“And of course, we’ll have beer and glühwein, which is a German spiced mulled wine, along with hot chocolate for the kids.” Santa will be on-site for pictures, and a variety of children’s activities will be featured inside downstairs. “We’ll have a kids’ craft area set up, where they can make birdseed ornaments and put them on our Christmas tree outside,” Bullington remarked. “We’ll also have a face painter there. Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation will present its annual Advent vespers service at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville, on Sunday, Dec. 5, at 3 p.m. The church and the schoolroom museum, located just north of the church across Route 372, will be open for tours and research from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The prelude of the service will feature the bagpiping of Jonathan Welch followed by remarks by foundation vice president Dan Henry and prayer by pastor John Barlow. The second annual Santa drive-through will take place on Friday, Dec. 3, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at WSUCC, 2723 N. Willow Street Pike, Willow Street. Families that attend can meet Santa, who will bring his sleigh. While there, children may write their Christmas letters and mail them in the North Pole mailbox at the church. Santa will write back to children who leave their address on the letter. Photos will be permitted, and each child will receive a goodie bag as well as a makeand-take craft. “We can’t wait to see Santa again and help him to spread some hope and joy for the Christmas season!” exclaimed Susan Myers, chairman of the Preschool Board at WSUCC. There is an admission fee per
vehicle, and the proceeds from the event will go to the WSUCC Preschool, which provides scholarships for students in need of financial assistance. “With COVID, our nonprofit preschool has taken a large financial loss with a decrease in enrollment and staff shortages,” noted Myers. Those unable to attend the Santa drive-through are still able to take part in the festivities. Children can mail their Christmas letters and a set fee to Santa through the WSUCC Preschool. Program To Highlight “Firefighting In Millersville” The Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS) invites the public to a presentation on “Firefighting in Millersville” at 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, in Millersville’s Municipal Center, 100 Municipal Drive. Duane Hagelgans, fire commissioner for Blue Rock Fire Rescue and professor of emergency management at Millersville University (MU), will be the speaker. Hagelgans, who has studied and written extensively about the volunteer fire service, will
discuss how Millersville relied on an all-volunteer fire company for about 100 years and how, after decades of dedicated service, it merged with the three other Manor Township fire companies (Highville, Washington Boro, and West Lancaster) and hired administrative staff. Also, he will explain how Millersville, as part of Blue Rock Fire Rescue, continues to use creative methods to survive as an all-volunteer organization. Hagelgans is a native and
resident of Lancaster city. A full-time MU faculty member since 2012 and a licensed attorney in Pennsylvania, he has degrees from Widener University School of Law, Millersville University, and HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. Local artist Karen Chandler will bring her newest collection of work, “Fluid Transformations,” to Mulberry Art Studios, 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster, in December. Chandler holds a Bachelor of Arts in art and has completed postgraduate work in art education at Millersville University. She studied commercial design and photography for two years at Kutztown University and studied sculpture under Cuban sculptor Ramon Lago at the Wyomissing School of Fine Art. She completed certification programs in digital design, print, and web at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design. She also studied clay printing with the late Mitch Lyons.
