This year’s Extraordinary Give (ExtraGive), hosted by the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF), is set for Friday, Nov. 19. Beginning at 12:00:01 a.m. on Nov. 19, individuals may make donations via credit card to participating nonprofits serving this region at www.extragive.org. The

more than 500 participating organizations will receive a prorated portion of the $500,000 stretch pool, with an additional $50,000 in prizes available. or three days this past October, 20 students from the Penn Manor School District (PMSD) participated in the Keystone Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Construction Wars, a middle school hands-on career exploration event held annually at the Keystone Center for Construction Careers in Manheim. The program, sponsored by ABC, attracts about 200 students from the Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties. “This year, we had our technology teachers, who work with all students, pick students in eighth grade that they feel have a high interest in the construction trades,” said Manor Middle School counselor Danielle Rogers. Eleven students from Manor Middle School and nine from Marticville Middle School built wooden benches, tested electrical circuits, made sheet metal toolboxes, and laid brick under the guidance of professionals in the construction industry. The eighth-graders also learned about high-paying, in-

“I was thinking about going to college and getting a degree in something, and there’s nothing wrong with that,” said Josh, “but at the same time, I was like, ‘Well, if I can do stuff in high school and learn how to do it and be working right out of high school, that may be a better option.’ Going there (to Construction Wars) made me realize I like working more hands-on and outside than working in an office.” “The hands-on experience was fun,” noted Hudson. “It was all just a great experience. I never thought I would like electric, but I really enjoyed that.” “I really liked the masonry and carving wood,” said Kayleigh. “I had experience with woodworking with my grandfather when I was younger. He does it as a hobby.” “I really liked the sheet metal, and my second favorite was the woodwork,” stated Jeremy. demand jobs in the trades as well as the education and training programs available to them through the Keystone Chapter of the ABC and the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center. “At our high school, students have the option to do a ninth-grade experience tech class where they get to rotate and experience different constructional trades, such as woodworking, welding, robotics, and electricity,” explained Rogers. “And then based on that experience, they can take a course focusing on one of the categories. The concept of the campaign came from Feeding Pennsylvania’s community manager, Corinne Foster, who doubles as a Central Pennsylvania food blogger, Fosterthefoodie. Through her food blog, Foster incorporates different ways of partnering with local restaurants on promotions that encourage individuals to support local restaurants while raising awareness and funds to support anti-hunger efforts. This once-localized approach eventually sparked an idea to take these efforts statewide.

PA Eats joined the campaign because of its mission of showcasing Pennsylvania food culture. Breweries in Pennsylvania also played a key role in outreach for the inaugural event, with a combined total of more than 60,000 followers on Facebook and Instagram. The plan is to use these platforms to share upcoming events, specials, and promotions for the Hops for Hunger campaign to help promote this year’s participating breweries. Volunteers are needed to wrap holiday gifts at Park City Center during the Christmas season. Sponsored by United Disabilities Services Foundation (UDS), the UDS gift wrap booth will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year. The booth will operate daily in the former Sears wing of Park City Center from Black Friday, Nov. 26, through Christmas Eve, Friday, Dec. 24. Booth hours are from noon to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays.

More than 250 volunteers from the community are needed to cover all available shifts. A shift is typically four hours. Volunteers must be age 14 and older and must follow COVID protocols, including wearing a mask, social distancing, and using hand sanitizer. ExtraGive Event from pg 1 Bakery and the Real Life Church of God, both located at 6030 Lemon St., East Petersburg, will host an ExtraGive event to support these three nonprofits. Some people might wonder how these three organizations are connected. Linda Rannels, owner of Geneva Bakery, is a member of the East Petersburg Events Committee; her daughter, Libby Rannels, has volunteered at RRWC for the past five years; and Hempfield Power Packs Project has a pickup location inside Geneva Bakery. This free event will start at Geneva Bakery at noon on Nov. 19. Tracie Young, founder of RRWC, will bring crafts and coloring books along with a possum, a skunk, a vulture, an owl, a snake, two box turtles, a great horned owl, and a groundhog. Hempfield Power Packs Project will provide free food samples, and the East Petersburg Events Committee will show the movie “Over the Hedge” at 7 p.m. The event will also

feature giveaways of gift baskets donated by some restaurants and businesses within East Petersburg. Those who attend are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items for Hempfield Power Packs Project, specifically peanut butter, boxed macaroni and cheese, soup, pasta, and canned vegetables. Geneva Bakery will be open until 7 p.m., and Linda plans to sell some animal-themed sweets. “It’s going to be fun and educational at the same time,” said Libby. “ With Raven Ridge, we just love educating people and seeing people’s faces light up when they see the animals.” “There will be a ton of free stuff to do with your kids,” stated Linda. “All three of the organizations are close to our hearts.” Attendees who are not vaccinated are encouraged to wear a mask. Wickersham Elementary students who take part in SWAN (Scaling Walls A Note at a Time) after-school classes had the opportunity to meet and work with Lancaster Symphony Orchestra musicians.

Wickersham Elementary, and the presentation was made by Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) concertmaster Luigi Mazzocchi and assistant concertmaster Nina Zubadi. The pair performed a Leclair sonata for two violins. Following the performance, the musicians spent time talking to the students and answering questions. SWAN founder and executive director Diana Vuolo noted that the students were “lost in learning.” “They had an engaging conversation. It was stimulating, instructive, and inspiring,” said Vuolo. “Experiencing music live has an impact emotionally. It was a really upbeat and happy time.” The presentation came about through a partnership between LSO and SWAN, with the visit being part of LSO’s Stand Partner Community Program, in which LSO makes a concerted effort to serve the community. SWAN is a free one-hour music program provided to School District of Lancaster (SDoL) students ages 6 to 18. The organization currently offers music lessons through several SDoL schools and at the

Since the children play ukuleles, it was natural for them to compare their instruments with the musicians’ violins. “(The students) saw that the violin has two holes to let the sound out and that both (instruments) have bridges, but they are different in shape and size. Both have four strings and a similarshaped body,” shared Vuolo. “They were describing the instruments with good adjectives, and they created good conversation.” The visiting musicians then gave the students an opportunity to play with them. “One of the most magical moments was when the symphony musicians had our children start plucking two notes repeatedly (on their ukuleles), and then the musicians started to play a folk dance,” said Vuolo. “They really did sound beautiful together.” Vuolo is especially looking forward to a return visit by Mazzocchi and Zubadi. “(LSO) will be sending the same musicians to the same classes multiple times throughout the year,” she explained, “so the school children will be able to create a relationship with them.” On Friday, Nov. 19, SWAN will take part in the Extraordinary Give (ExtraGive), hosted by the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF). The 24-hour event, which is the the largest per-capita giving day in the nation, will begin at 12:00:01 a.m. on Nov. 19. Penn Manor High School alumna Kelly Mantoan, now living in Hammonton, N.J., has written a book for parents who face an uncertain future following the diagnosis of their child with a life-altering physical or intellectual disability. As a mother of five, two of whom have a rare, neuromuscular disorder, Mantoan knows first-hand the struggles these parents face and strategies for overcoming them. In her book, “Better Than OK: Finding Joy as a SpecialNeeds Parent,” published by Our Sunday Visitor Publishing, Mantoan outlines the stages parents typically go through following a life-changing diagnosis and the steps they can take to find a new normal that is not only OK, but that is better than OK. Mantoan herself went from experiencing constant depression and almost losing her Catholic faith to being the writer of a humor blog and a public speaker known for her upbeat talks. Friends and family who want to know how best to aid

special-needs families will also find tips and advice on what to say and what not to say, plus ways to offer help. The tour is a fundraiser for the MRA, which has worked to restore many of the public buildings in Marietta. “Our organization has been instrumental over the years in helping to preserve historic landmarks in town,” Spickler stated. He added that although Marietta is full of older homes, the tour offers a chance to see a variety of places. “We have homes in town that are modern. We have homes that were built in the early 1800s. It’s really an eclectic mix,” he said. “It’s about how the homeowners choose to decorate their homes and what their style is. You never know what they’re going to surprise you with

For more than half a century, people have been peeking into the homes of Marietta residents at Christmastime. The 55th annual Marietta Candlelight Tour of Homes will continue this tradition on Sunday, Dec. 5, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. “We have eight homeowners who have graciously opened their homes and decorated them in their own style for Christmas,” said Jason Spickler, who is co-chair of the tour along with Rebecca Baltozer. The tour is hosted by the Marietta Restoration Associates (MRA), who operate the Old Town Hall Museum, 3 W. Walnut St., and the Union Meeting House, 80 N. Waterford Ave., which will be part of the tour as well. A tree lighting and an appearance by Santa and Mrs. Claus will take place at the Old Town Hall Museum at 5 p.m. Throughout the day, the Union Meeting House will feature dance demonstrations by World Dance Lancaster as well as Christmas music played on an 1847 Henry Knauff pipe organ. The site will also feature a Make-A-Wish Christmas tree. Spickler noted that this year’s tour includes at least three homes that have never been featured before. “We try to get a variety of homes,” he said. “That’s why people come back year after year, because
