Honor Veterans At Building Bridges BY COURTNEY MENGEL

hen Lloyd Anderson returned home after serving in World War II and the Korean War, he experienced what is known today at post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). At the time, there were not as many services offered as there are today that help veterans process what they have experienced. Lloyd struggled to find his way and took his own life. Lloyd’s brother, Dave Anderson, also an Army veteran, decided to found the Building Bridges Foundation, to which he donated his 21-acre farm. With the goal of providing a safe space for personal growth through equine-assisted activities for veterans and their families, as well as those who have experienced trauma and loss, and those who are dealing with cognitive and emotional challenges, the Building Bridges Foundation at Anderson Farm became an official nonprofit organization in 2015.

Located at 230 Indian Hill Road, Conestoga, the Building Bridges Foundation at Anderson Farm has a licensed mental health counselor and a certified equine specialist who are qualified to help those with PTSD, depression, and/or anxiety, and are in need of resilience training, transitioning skills, and emotion regulation. Their services are offered at no cost to veterans and their families. On Saturday, Nov. 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Building Bridges Foundation at Anderson Farm will host its annual Veterans Day Service event, which will feature giveaway drawings for guns. The day will begin with an opportunity to view sponsored tables and exhibits. At 11 a.m., there will be a “thank you for serving and welcome home” program, where a few veterans will talk about the impact the foundation has had on their lives. Lunch will be served at noon. From 1 to 4 p.m., there will be beer taps, giveaways, gun giveaway drawings, and silent and live auctions.

For the past 116 years, Water Street Mission (WSM), located at 210 S. Prince St., Lancaster, has provided men, women, and children experiencing homelessness in Lancaster County with access to medical, dental, behavioral health, spiritual, and career support. As a religious organization, one of the goals of WSM is to give people a sense of hope and healing so they can find restoration with God. See Food Drive pg 6

Geology Rocks: Fossil And Mineral Club To Hold Fall Show

The Discovering Earth’s Wonders Fall Show will showcase a variety of specimens, with an assortment of hot food for sale as well.

The Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club (LCFMC) is a registered nonprofit organization that began in 2014. Its mission is to bring together local people who share an interest in geology and paleontology. LCFMC will host its seventh annual Discovering Earth’s Wonders Fall Show. The event will take place on Saturday, Nov. 6, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Trinity Reformed Church of Christ, 450 W. Main St., Mountville. Those

who attend will see unique fossils, trilobites, Paleozoic wonders, gems, jewelry, minerals, and crystals from Pennsylvania and beyond. Many of the items included in the show have been collected by LCFMC members. Specimens will be displayed for perusal or purchase at discounted prices. There will also be free “ask the experts” analysis to identify special specimens. “This event is held each year just for our local friends and neighbors,” said club founder Chris Haefner. “They can come and find out about the club in a fun-filled environment.”

Greenberg-Thompson is a visual arts teacher at Lancaster Country Day School. She has been drawing all her life and loves the physical act of drawing and the directness of the drawn line in documenting fleeting experiences. She uses a wide range of drawing, painting and printmaking media to create naturalistic and abstract works characterized by layers and organic lines. Emerson is an artist from

West Reading, who focuses on detailed graphite pencil and paper illustrations depicting a variety of themes. Emerson’s inspiration for this exhibit is part of the healing process that was brought on in 2020 after the death of her spouse. On Monday, Nov. 1, WSM will launch its annual Rescue Mission Food Drive (RMFD) with the goal of collecting over 70,000 pounds of nonperishable food - which would weigh roughly the same as 24 cars by Sunday, Dec. 19. Proceeds from RMFD will go in two directions: providing meals for men, women, and children experiencing homelessness and also supporting the Outreach Center, a food distribution center for neighbors of WSM. The Outreach Center provides grocery assistance to over 2,000 individuals and families, sharing roughly

Jump Into STEM - Nature Scavenger Hunt, for children ages 3 to 5, has been set for Thursday, Nov. 4, from 10 to 11 a.m. Preschoolers will work on identifying shapes, colors, and other characteristics of objects in the natural setting around them. Thursday in the Park: Birds of Winter, for children ages 6 to 9, will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. on Nov. 4. After learning about some common winter birds and playing a round of bird bingo, attendees will go outdoors to search for birds. Attendees should dress for the weather. Partnership Aims To Aid Streams This fall, the Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership members will seek to improve local stream health by planting roughly 65,500 native trees. By the end of this year, partners will have planted about 200,000 trees. The partnership is coordinated by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF), and Brenda Sieglitz is the partnership manager. Requests for fall trees were filled in less than three weeks

and 5,000 additional trees were ordered. Collective efforts by the 200-member partnership and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources have added more than 3 million trees along local streams and in urban settings since the campaign launched in 2018. While fall trees are being planted, partners will make site visits to landowners to plan for 2022, as over 453,000 trees have been

ordered. Additional landowners and locations will be needed to accommodate the 453,000 trees ordered for next year. Pennsylvania’s Clean Water Blueprint calls for about 95,000 acres of forested buffers to be planted in Pennsylvania’s portion of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Adding 10 million new trees alongside streams, streets, and other priority landscapes by the end of 2025 would

accelerate the Keystone State toward its clean water goals, achieving as much as twothirds of the 95,000-acre goal. Trees help to clean and protect waterways by filtering and absorbing polluted runoff, stabilizing streambanks, and improving soil quality. Landowners interested in having trees for spring should contact a local partner or CBF at www.tenmilliontrees.org by mid-November so a site visit can be arranged.

Comets Fight From Behind To Squeak Past McCaskey BY MONA STEINHAUER

The comeback kids were at it again. Penn Manor’s football team came from behind to beat CV 16-12 and Warwick 30-28, then there was Solanco 21-17. Now, after losses to Wilson and Manheim Township, the Comets scored with the clock ticking down to upend McCaskey 21-17 on Oct. 16 in Lancaster. “That was fun,” said head coach John Brubaker. “I would like to win with a little more cushion, but it makes the thrill of victory even better when you come out on top.” The win pushes Manor’s record to 5-3 overall. “It’s the most wins we’ve had since 2014,” said Brubaker. After a scoreless first quarter, the Comets reached the endzone in the second frame on Eli Warfel’s 30-yard strike

McCaskey cut into the lead with a 31-yard field goal for a four-point deficit at the half. “ We really struggled to move the ball on the ground,” said Brubaker. “Jonathan Osman was our leading rusher with 55 yards.” Manor extended the lead in the third quarter with Erik Hinkle’s 42-yard punt return but, just like that, McCaskey scored a pair of unanswered touchdowns to take a 17-14 lead with 1:22 on the clock. Three plays and 59 yards later, the Comets pulled out a victory. Warfel (13-of-17 for 171 yards) completed arials to Clark Wagstaff and DeShawn Stanley while Hinkle scored from two yards out. “The pass to DeShawn was actually tipped,” recalled Brubaker. “He came down on his back at the two and the

ball fell into his hands. Erik (Hinkle) punched it in from there, and we took the lead with 40 seconds left.” Enough time for McCaskey to drum up some heroic measures as well. Comet sophomore Ty Washington ended those thoughts. He not only sacked the quarterback but caused a fumble and recovered the loose ball to end the game. “Ty, and another sophomore, Dhamir Wesley (three solo tackles, three assists), also played well,” said Brubaker. “And Erik had a monster game. He led with seven solo tackles and scored that punt return when our offense wasn’t showing consistency. That was our first special teams touchdown this year. “We still have work to do, but I’m hoping we’re playing our best football here at the end of the season.”

Holiday Trains Ramble Planned The Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania will host a Holiday Trains Ramble on Saturday, Dec. 4. Participants will begin the day with a ride through the Chester Creek Valley on the West Chester Railroad’s Santa Express Train, enjoying live entertainment and a box lunch. Following the train ride, travelers will depart for the William H. Gray III 30th Street Station to begin a guided tour of “Underground Philadelphia: Subways, Railways & Stations.” Starting by trolley, then descending on foot into an underground concourse network, holiday ramblers will learn about the loss of the historic Broad Street Station, the 1905 to mid-1950s trolley and subway lines, the Broad Street subway, the Commuter Rail Terminal, and the former Reading Terminal. The tour will conclude at the Reading

Terminal Market, where travelers will enjoy some free time and purchase dinner on their own. The last stop of the day will be the Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania to view its garden railway display, which includes a quarter mile of tracks featuring model trains on multiple loops, tunnels, bridges, and rail lines. The display will feature holiday decorations. The cost of the outing includes lunch. Current Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania members will receive a discount.
