The Return Of River Heritage Day BY COURTNEY MENGEL

or the past 20 years, the Blue Rock Heritage Center (BRHC), 2251 River Road, Washington Boro, has aimed to promote and conserve the history of the Lower Susquehanna River Valley area. To accomplish this goal, BRHC houses artifacts and brings attention to archaeological and historical resources, features, and buildings, also focusing on their relationship with and access to the local ecological systems. On Saturday, Oct. 16, BRHC will host its 19th annual River Heritage Day. The event will take place at Washington Boro Park, 2010 River Road, Washington Boro, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Barry Lee, a bluegrass musician, will provide live entertainment; Mr. Balloony will perform; Jesse the Reptile Guy will give a presentation; and Raven Ridge Wildlife Center will make an appearance. Food, such as hamburgers, hot dogs, and chicken corn soup, as well as beverages will be available for purchase. Additionally, there will be a Penn Manor FFA tractor pull, a kids’ tractor pull,

“I’ve been writing all my life,” said Lancaster resident Dan Armstrong. From 1982 to 1987, Armstrong wrote songs for his Christian rock band, Damascus; from 1992 to 1997, he wrote 1,000 one-minute shows called “The Wacky Words of Dan Armstrong” on WJTL; and in 2015, he published “The Adventures of a Real-Life Cable Guy.” Armstrong is a man of many talents. He can speak Japanese, perform magic tricks, and craft owls out of pieces of wood. He’s a real estate investor, a business owner, a storyteller, a husband, and the

Spooky season is upon us, and what better way to celebrate than with a Halloween Tour? Create Columbia will host the tour of nine locations throughout Columbia on Sunday, Oct. 31, from 3 to 8 p.m. Tickets will be available on the day of the event at the Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., from 2:30 to 6 p.m. “This is a self-guided tour,” said Denise Brubaker, who is organizing the event with Kay Leader. “The tickets will include a brochure with the addresses and summaries of each place.” Leader suggests that tourgoers begin their tour in the dungeons below the market house, noting that two people will be in the dungeons to give tours of the historic site. From there, the tour will feature a mix of private homes and other locations. “We are hoping to do this tour year after year,” she said of the first-year event. The idea for the Halloween Tour came up at a meeting for members of Create Columbia, a group dedicated to promoting the arts in the town. “It

was actually my idea,” said Denise. “I thought, ‘Lots of towns do Christmas tours. Why don’t we do a Halloween tour?’” Denise and her husband, Gary, are the perfect couple to host a spot on the tour. “I have a room downstairs in my house that’s decorated for Halloween year-round, and it’s been that way for 15 years,” Denise said. While Denise came up with the idea for the tour, Gary is the bigger Halloween fan in the family. He collects Halloween decorations, which are displayed throughout the Brubakers’ house. “It reminds me of the 1950s when I was growing up,” Gary explained, adding that many of the items in his collection came from

his mother and others have been picked up at auctions or sales over the years. Stops on the tour will feature a wide variety of Halloween décor, and tour hosts will appear in costume or Halloween-themed outfits. “We’re including things that would appeal to many peo-

City Seeks Community Input The City of Lancaster has begun an engagement process regarding $39.5 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding with the launch of a project on the Engage Lancaster website. Autumn is officially here and making its presence known. Trees are changing color, the temperature is getting colder, leaves are falling, and people are gathering. On Saturday, Oct. 23, from 2 to 6 p.m., New Providence Mennonite Church (NPMC), 121 Main St., New Providence, will host its second annual fall fest. This time, however, pastor Keith Roberts and his

wife, Beth, are going to try to make it a little bigger. “I just want to see the community come together and enjoy themselves,” stated Keith. “People can come here, forget about the news for a while, and just see that there really are good people out there.” The event will provide fun for people of all ages. There will be hayrides, adult- and kid-friendly axe throwing; a photo booth with a giant pumpkin; a petting zoo with chickens, goats, and sheep, pumpkin painting; a ring toss; and a bean bag toss. New this year will be a bounce house. “ When we have our fall fest, it’s just hopping with children,” said Beth. “It’s great to hear their laughter and see the fun.” The baking contest, a favorite last year, will return. Entries, which will be due by 2 p.m. the day of the event, will be judged in four categories: cookies, cakes, pies, and anything pumpkin. Winners will receive ribbons, and at 4 p.m.,

In their second home meet of the season, the cross country teams got some solid individual performances but came away with just one win, a 25-30 result for the boys against Solanco. Both teams came up short against Hempfield. Abby Ames was the top Comet of the day, placing second overall with a 20:29 and in front of seven Hempfield runners. Mackenzie Nafziger was 12th while Zoe King and Emma Cassel crossed the line in 17th and 18th place, respectively. Bethany Hetrick rounded out the top five in 20th place with Madison Montalvo three places back. The boys’ race against Solanco

was tight but Carter Vinson finished as Manor’s fifth counter and was ahead Solanco’s fifth to help seal the deal. Kaleb Kabakjian clocked a 17:14 and was 6th overall. The Comets’ lone senior, JT Hetrick placed 10th (17:32) while Aidan Gerlach and Isaac Braegelman crossed in 16th and 17th. “It was a good team performance to get the win over Solanco,” said co-head coach Tom Ecker. “Kaleb and JT had a strong last half of their race enabling them to pass several runners. Aidan had one of his best races of the season to finish as our third runner. “The girls could not overcome the loss of one teammate out due to illness,” he added. “But most

of the girls had their best race of the season. Abby finished with her best time of the year and Mackenzie improved by several minutes as a result of her hard work over the past month of training.” for more photos see www.townlively.com VOLLEYBALL The Comets, looking to keep pace with CV, battled but fell short 3-1, avoiding the sweep with a 25-23 thriller in the third set. “We’re still working on consistency,” said head coach Tim Joyce. “We’ve had an ever-changing lineup since the start of the season due to a variety of reasons, so we’re trying to find a system that clicks. “We had 37 earned points in the match and 60 unforced errors, so we have things to work on. We’re a young group.” Cassidy McCollum led the team with nine kills and served up three aces. “Lezlie Nguyen, a sophomore, has stepped in to play the role of middle hitter/blocker, a challenging position,” stated Joyce. “She hit .800 with four kills on five attempts and did a nice job adjusting her serve to score two aces and eight points overall on the serve.” for more photos see townlively.com

FIELD HOCKEY After cruising through the season with nine straight wins, including four shutouts and 21 goals scored, the Comets suffered their first defeat of the season, a 1-0 result against Warwick. They rebounded with shutouts over Cedar Crest and Township but suffered two straight losses over the last week. CV avenged its 1-0 loss on the Sept. 17th with a 1-0 victory in Millersville October 1. Despite seven corners and with five shots on the goal, the Comets came up empty. Last Monday night, in another home game, the Comets racked up 11 corners, held Hempfield to one, but gave up two goals, both in the last five minutes of the game. Last Wednesday in Lititz the Comets avenged that season first loss to the Warriors with a 2-1 victory. Warwick’s second quarter goal opened the scoring while third quarter scores from Tristan Groff and Riley Robinson tied it up and then provided the win. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs mixed up the scoring, rushing for three scores, passing for two and returning a punt 70 yards to paydirt. That score pushed the lead to 26-0 at the half. Although O’Donnell works hard to portray the humor of each woman, playing Mary Todd Lincoln makes this more difficult, she said. “She was an emotionally fragile person with unspeakable tragedy in her life,” she commented, noting that Mary experienced increasing mental illness later in life. However, O’Donnell does find some funny moments in Mary’s interactions with her husband and in her reputation for being a shopaholic. Being in the spotlight comes naturally to O’Donnell, who added, “I’ve been a ham all my life.” The mother of four and grandmother of eight said she loves performing not just because she’s in front of an audience, but also because her shows give her the chance to showcase incredible women from history. “I want to bring these

This is the fifth year for the Haunted Lantern Tour, and Mimnall said it’s a unique event. “One of the things that sets us apart is that we talk as if the events are happening here and now,” she explained.

“Our actors are portraying that person during the event. We want to make people feel as if they are there in the story.” Proceeds from the tour will benefit local organizations, including the upkeep of the Miller Mansion. Harvest Festival Planned In Conestoga The first-ever Conestoga Harvest Festival will be held on Saturday, Nov. 13, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ehrlich Park, 51 Kendig Road, Conestoga. The event will include craft vendors, food vendors, and a pie-making competition. Games and activities will be available for children, and attendees can watch a real blacksmith in action and see a Conestoga wagon. The purpose of the event is to bring awareness to the Conestoga Area Historical Society and the events it sponsors in the community.

Vendors of all sorts are sought. Vendor exhibits should be family-friendly. There is limited availability inside on a firstcome, first-served basis. All other vendors will be outside. “Counseling is important because we can all benefit from having a safe space to share things that we don’t want to discuss in casual conversation with others,” said Kayla Landis, a resident of Lancaster with a Master of Science in clinical counseling. “Counseling can provide support, validation, connection, and resources to those who may be struggling and don’t know where to turn.” New Hope Community Life Ministry is a Christinspired nonprofit organization that exists to provide hope and restoration through compassionate professional counseling. The organization offers its services regardless of an individual’s ability to pay. As a result, New Hope opened the New Hope Community Closet to support its mission. The ministry also plans fundraising events throughout the year to support its mission. For the first time, New Hope will host an event where the public can learn about the ministry, sample food from local restaurants, and bid on silent auction items. The “Discover the New Hope Chest” event will take place on Thursday, Oct. 28, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Providence Church, 269 Cinder Road, New Providence. “The main goal is to offset the cost of counseling for
