Kim Zimmerman, who founded City Gate with her husband, Brian, noted that although the ministry’s locations - Lancaster, Lititz, Ephrata, and Columbia are all decorated to resemble comfortable living rooms or coffee shops, with books, coffee, and water available, each City Gate location has developed its own personality, with some being more business minded and others being partnership focused. The Zimmermans first envisioned City Gate in Lancaster city in 2006. The pair was training in a prayer ministry, and they felt a call from God to use what they were learning outside the church walls. In 2007, they rented a basement room in a former Lancaster hotel. “We started meeting with the homeless community,” said Zimmerman. “Every Friday night, we had three or four hours See City Gate pg 3

ambunctious kids, colorful floats, classic cars, cheering crowds, dancers, and musicians - there’s nothing quite like a parade. The Millersville Parade has aimed to improve relationships between the Borough of Millersville, Millersville University, Manor Township, and surrounding communities since its inception in 1997. For more than 20 years, Steven DiGuiseppe chaired the initiative and superintended its development into one of Lancaster County’s largest parades, but DiGuiseppe closed that chapter of his life last year when he retired. This year, the committee welcomed Victor DeSantis as the new chairperson. DeSantis serves as the executive

director of community engagement and governmental and economic development at Millersville University. He said he is more than excited for the upcoming parade. On Saturday, Oct. 16, the 2-mile parade will begin at 8:30 a.m., starting at Penn Manor High School, 100 E. Cottage Ave., Millersville, and ending on Millersville University’s campus. The event will be part of the university’s homecoming weekend; in fact, DeSantis noted it is the highlight of the weekend. “For many, this is a kickoff to the fall season,” stated DeSantis. “It’s a time to see your neighbors and see all that the university and the Millersville borough have to offer.” The parade will feature some returning musical groups, youth organizations, local nonprofits, and
emergency vehicles. New this year will be an axe throwing group. The event, however, will be shorter in length compared to past years because the committee wants to be respectful of people and people’s concerns about the pandemic, said DeSantis. This year’s theme will be “Hometown Heroes.” Instead of having a grand marshal, the theme will pay tribute to those who have made a difference in the community, including medical and health care workers, first responders, and educators. “We will be honoring and paying respect to those who never took a day off during the pandemic,” explained DeSantis. “They’re all going to be the guests of honor.” The parade is made possible by the efforts of volunteers, all of
whom will receive a free Millersville Parade T-shirt and free admission to a buffet luncheon after the event. The Christian Rural Overseas Program (CROP) was created in 1947 when farmers were asked to donate food and seed crops to Europe and Asia after World War II. Twenty-two years later, the inaugural CROP Hunger Walk was organized in Bismarck, N.D., and in York, Pa., the year after. Since then, CROP Hunger Walk events have been held in hundreds of communities nationwide, raising money to eradicate hunger and poverty. Representatives from Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, Refton Brethren in Christ Church, and Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren have collaborated for the past 31 years to host the annual Solanco CROP Hunger Walk. its inception in 1980, the event has raised over $401,000. All of the proceeds go to Church World Service, the organizer of the CROP Hunger Walk, then the Church World Service sends 25% of the funds to a chosen local organization. Mary Etta Reinhart and Don Trimble, co-chairs of the Solanco CROP Walk, selected the food bank run by Solanco Neighborhood Ministries (SNM) as the recipient. Through the CROP Walk, participants endeavor to help eradicate hunger on both global and local scales. This year’s Solanco CROP Hunger Walk will be held on Saturday, Oct. 16, at Muddy Run Park, 172 Bethesda Church Road, Holtwood. Walkers will gather at 8:30 a.m., with the 5-mile walk beginning at 9 a.m. Masks will be optional, and the event will be held rain or shine. “The park is such a beautiful place to walk,” stated Reinhart. “Usually, the trees are changing and I see deer almost every year. (The event is) also a good role model for families; we have adults who came when they were kids.” “This is a very worthy cause,” said Trimble. “It provides funds for those who are unable to help themselves so they can start a project where they can become self-sufficient.” The owners of C.R. Lapp’s Family Restaurant, Robin and Christy Lapp, will donate a $10 gift card to each participant who raises a minimum of $100. We were connecting with the community.” During a worship service in the early days of the Lancaster location, a man walked in and sank to the floor, asking Zimmerman to sing “Amazing Grace.” When she finished, he told her that he had been sober for seven years, but that he had been fighting temptation that night. “(He said), ‘If you had not been here (then his voice trailed off).’” recalled Zimmerman. After only about a year at that location, the building was condemned, and Zimmerman said she felt God calling her to take a drive on Duke Street. She came across a new rental property that became the ministry’s downtown location. “That’s what happens,” said Zimmerman. “God provides buildings and
finances every time we move to a new location.” Zimmerman noted that City Gate works with the strengths and aptitudes of those who donate their time at each location. “ We ask those who volunteer what they feel called to do,” she said, noting that intercessory prayer, Bible ministry, and time for creative art activities are all part of the mix. “In Lancaster, because of the pandemic, we are the Sunday location where people get lunch,” she said. Although each location is unique, Zimmerman noted that the underlying mission is the same. “It’s always based in prayer, and there is always some type of service being done,” she said, adding that City Gate has hopes to do more as God provides. “A bigger vision would be to have facilities where the homeless

PM Tennis Team Holds off McCaskey 4-3 full. Erik Hinkle led the way with nine solo tackles. He’s having a phenomenal year. Jimmy Keck and Adam Ditmer also had a big night defensively with a combined 13 solo tackles. “This is a good momentum builder,” he added. “Every week is going to be a challenge, but I like our chances.” GOLF Penn Manor’s young golfers continue to impress. Last Monday at the Lancaster-Lebanon League Championships at Honey Brook, the Comets wrapped up a third-place finish (318 points) behind Lampeter-Strasburg (308) and Manheim Township (309). Jesse Shue’s 76 was low score for the Comets and left him in a tie for eighth place. JP Radwanski (79), Aiden Doyle (81) and Keegan Dings (82) rounded out the counters while Seb Elias (84), Brayden Souder (94) and Maggie Eckroat (97) also competed. “I can’t tell you the last time we had six players (Doyle, Shue, Radwanski, Dings, Eckroat, and Elias first alternate) qualify for districts,” said head coach Tom Reustle. “They have been working hard all season and both Jesse and Keegan were only a few strokes from being the top qualifier.” The cut for the boys’ tournament was 83 while the girls had to shoot 104 or less. The District Three tournament will be held Oct. 8-9 in York County at Honey Run. Ephrata finished in front 25-20, 25-20, 25-19. “Errors have ultimately been the issue,” said head coach Tim Joyce. “We’re still getting back on our feet after having a disruption to our season due to illness. We’ve been missing players for the last three matches.” McCollum was held to seven kills in the loss. Nguyen finished with a pair of aces and three blocks, Saylor put up eight assists and Jordan Bailey scrambled for eight digs. At Warwick last Tuesday the Comets came up short 25-12, 2521, 25-11. The Warriors put down 15 kills to help pull away. McCollum was tops with five kills and seven digs. Saylor finished with six assists, Eliana Knaub finished with two aces and Nguyen added one block. BOYS’ SOCCER In non-league action in Red Lion Friday, Sept. 24 Aidan Smith notched his sixth goal of the season, an unassisted first half tally that stood as the game-winner. Back in league play last Tuesday, the Comets suffered a second loss to Hempfield. The Knights won 2-0 on Sept. 10 and swept the series with a 3-1 home win.

Drew Lebo recorded six saves. GIRLS’ SOCCER Hempfield’s girls’ soccer team, with just two wins to date, proved they are better than their record as they went toe-to-toe with Penn Manor last Tuesday. The Comets, with 18 goals scored, recorded six shots on goal, managed just one corner and still came out a winner, 1-0. Lily Sugra assisted Carolyn Hinkle in the 44th minute for the only goal needed. Allison Burkholder recorded 11 saves and Kelsie Hilken two as the Comets improved to 6-1 overall. FIELD HOCKEY After suffering their first loss
of the season (1-0 to Warwick) the Comets regrouped and took care of Cedar Crest last Monday at Comet Field. With 13 shots on goal and eight corners, Manor racked up three goals in a shutout victory. Tristan Groff scored the only goal Manor really needed in the first quarter. Riley Robinson’s goal midway through the third quarter provided a bit of insurance while Malayna Kahl’s fourth quarter tally put the game out of reach. Cecily Charles needed just three saves to preserve the victory. In Neffsville last Tuesday the Comets notched a second 1-0 victory over Manheim Township. Grace Gerner, assisted by Caity McGough, scored her fifth goal of the season and the game-winner with 11:20 left in the third quarter, pushing the Comets to 11-1 overall.

Scouts, Amvets Plan Ride For Wreaths Boy Scout Troop 64, based in Rohrerstown, and Amvets Riders Post 19 are teaming up to hold a Ride for Wreaths on Saturday, Oct. 9, to garner wreath sponsorships for Wreaths Across America. Wreaths Across America is a national nonprofit organization that honors veterans and their families by placing wreaths on veterans’ graves for the holidays.
