n Sept. 16, Youth for Veterans was officially recognized as a charitable 'LOOHU $YHQXH 1HZ +ROODQG 3$organization by the Commonwealth )UHHGRP)ORRULQJ//& FRP Ɇ of Pennsylvania. The budding community service group is at the helm of a movement to rally younger generations to support veterans in Lancaster County - and local eighth-grader Chase Muchmore is leading the charge. Chase started Youth for Veterans in 2024. Although it only recently became recognized by the state as an official nonprofit organization, the Manor Middle School student has been working hard to support Lancaster County veterans in a number of ways. He recruited his friends and community members to assist veterans with landscaping projects such as weeding, installing garden beds, mulching and mowing their grass. After a local Vietnam War veteran experienced medical issues that prevented him from maintaining his yard, Chase assembled a group of volunteers to pull out weeds and help reorganize the man’s recently flooded basement. On Sept. 22, Chase Muchmore delivered a trunk full of treats collected by the Youth for Veterans snack See Appreciation pg 4 drive to the Lebanon VA Medical Center.

Duck hunting is a fall tradition with deep historic roots that have led to a fiercely loyal community. Waterfowl shows provide opportunities for this community to come together, showcase treasured decoys, and invite new members to join the dedicated fellowship. Despite duck hunting and decoy carving being such a closeknit community, however, there are no local shows in Pennsylvania. The Blue Rock Heritage Center is determined to change that. The center’s inaugural Waterfowl Celebration and Decoy Show is going to be a can’t-miss event, hosted on the banks of the Susquehanna River on Saturday,

Decoy Show from pg 1 Oct. 3, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Most of the vendors will set up in the spacious red barn, so the event will be easily accessible regardless of the weather. Admission and parking are free, and food trucks, including an ice cream truck, will be on-site. “If we’re going to do this, we’re going to do it right,” said Charlie Douts, the center’s president. His goal is to put together an intentional, well-designed show that provides value for everyone, whether they are families looking for a fun outing or hardcore enthusiasts looking to buy hunting gear, learn more, and find other duck hunters. There will be close to 30 vendors coming from Delaware, New Jersey, Virginia and Maryland, as well as highlighting the local talent. The nationally known Havre de Grace Museum will be at the show, as well as the Upper Bay Museum and Raven Ridge. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission will be there with educational handouts for kids. Local displays will include woodwork ing , wildlife paintings and wildlife photos. There will be decoy giveaway drawings, and Ducks Unlimited will host several hunting gun giveaway drawings. As far as competitions, there will be a decoy competition with adult and junior divisions. Contestants are welcome to bring their best decoys to the show, with no prior registration required. As long as the weather cooperates, falconer Will Weyant from Perry County will be there with his bird of prey. Weyant gives educational talks in schools and does falcon flight demonstrations that are fascinat-

The nearby river is wide and has perfect food sources for the ducks that migrate along the eastern flyway. It’s a perfect location, with families still hunting right there alongside the river. The Blue Rock Heritage Center, showcasing dozens of duck mounts and the local Native American history, will be open all day for attendees to view for free. They are supporters from infants to over 90 years of age, social workers, community members, university students, churchgoers and local leaders. T h e F re e d o m Wa l k requires more than 75 volunteers in order to run smoothly. “People are filled with excitement,” said Thurston. “ There are opportunities to connect with other people. It’s a time for people to say, ‘I’m taking a next step in this meaningful experience.’ They also feel what others have gone through.”

Thurston and her husband, Steve, established Hope Inspire Love in 2017, and two years later, the Freedom Walk made its debut with 200 participants. The Freedom Walk has evolved into Hope Inspire Love’s signature event, as both a fundraiser and as a vehicle for bringing awareness to human trafficking. “I look for ward to it every year,” said Thurston. “Each of us has a part in this fight, you and I. The day will also include live music, a simulation tent and information tables manned by other organizations that are opponents of human trafficking, and a lunch will be served after the walk. “It’s a celebration of the beauty of collaboration,” said Thurston, a resident of Manheim Township. “We have 30 minutes of stage time when we talk about the why. It allows people to understand what they’re walking for. We want to invite healthy conversation.” In single file, the walkers will process quietly and slowly from Musser Park around Lancaster Central Market and back again. The joyous and somber moments create a moving vibe felt by participants, victims and spectators alike. “It’s so beautiful because anyone can do it,” said Thurston. “It is literally a movement. Seeing our young people walk with signs that say ‘I’m not for sale’ is so powerful. We have to start when our kids are young. “It’s an outward action of an inner desire for this to end,” she added. “As we move, we see people fill with tears. Some people will pray in the park while we are walking.” More than 500 individu-

Every year, we have people come up to us and say, ‘Thank you for doing this for me.’” T he time is near for another installment of staunch human trafficking foe Hope Inspire Love’s inspiring trek for social change - the Fre e dom Walk. This year’s edition of the annual event will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, at Musser Park, 135 N. Lime St., Lancaster. “Because it’s been so much in the news and so many nonprofits are offering services, there is so much awareness about human trafficking,” said Thurston. “What people don’t know about is the trafficking going on online. Part of our goal is awareness, while helping people take the next step in independence and freedom. We get calls all the time.” The Freedom Walk festivities will begin around 9 a.m. when people begin filtering in for registration. There will be time for conversation and camaraderie before participants are addressed about the depths of the human traf-
