members of its mission and nurture committee, the church, at 1964 Water St., will open its doors to everyone in the community this fall with a chicken potpie supper, Christmas bazaar and baked potato bar. “ We h ave f re q ue nt e ve nt s that are free to the community,”
committee co-chair Diana Boswa said. “We also have fundraisers for our missions, which are both local and international.” Whether it’s cooking 140 pounds of chicken or baking 160 potatoes, both longtime and newer church members are up for the task. There are few things more invigorating, more inspirational, more exhilarating than sharing interests with like-minded people. Unless, of course, that shared interest involves learning. “These are people who just have always had a knack for learning new things and reading books,” said Diane Carroll, who’s been Quest for Learning Lancaster’s board president for eight years. “They’re maybe a little nerdish. For senior citizens, almost everything they can do to keep the brain active is a really important part of aging well. There’s also a business of meeting up with people, and their concern for each other. There’s a whole gamut of socializing that goes on.” Quest for Learning Lancaster is all about education and fellowship. Designed for but not limited to older adults, Quest for Learning Lancaster is gearing up for another series of informative classes at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 31 S. Duke St., Lancaster. The courses will offer four 50-minute classes - with time for questions and discussion at the end - on a variety of different topics at both 9:40 and 11 a.m. on six consecutive Thursdays, beginning Sept. 24. Quest for Learnng is a secular, nonprofit organization. “The lectures are amazing, and we get amazing lecturers,” said Carroll. “These are presenters who everybody loves to hear. Sometimes our professors and presenters tell us they are ecstatic to be doing this for Quest because no one is texting, no one is falling asleep and the people are so attentive. They’re listening, and, I hope, learning.” Quest for Learning Lancaster classes employ spoken lectures, some reading and visual aids to present the subject materials. There are no grades, tests or homework. Among the most popular of the rotating topics are music, history, film and baseball, but there are also classes focusing on coffee, trees, writing, science and worldviews.

“No matter what it is that you’re looking for, whether it’s challenging topics or knowledge, you can find it at Quest,” said Carroll, a resident of southern Lancaster County. “People just love the camaraderie and the education. These people really want to learn.” Currently, there are more than 300 individuals registered for Quest for Learning Lancaster courses, mostly senior citizens and mainly people from Lancaster County. On any given Thursday morning, more than 200 of those registrants will be in attendance. The classes are led and taught by 30 volunteer instructors, including former and current professors, lawyers, industry experts and community leaders. “I’m always a little disappointed when I ask people if they have ever heard of Quest and they haven’t,” said Carroll. “We have really tried to work hard on getting the word out. I think everybody deserves to know about it. It’s a great opportunity.” Quest for Learning Lancaster was established in 1976 and has spent the last 49 years of its existence at the accommodating Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. “When it was first started, local ministers became interested in this format,” said Carroll. “They were impressed by the number of people who attended. It was initially held at First Presbyterian Church, but it was so small of a venue that it had to be moved to Trinity Lutheran Church, and it’s been there ever since. Premium hot dogs are the featured item, although chips, snacks and Turkey Hill iced tea and beverages will also be available for purchase. “We have suppliers of equipment and type, paper and everything else,” Kulakowsky said. “We also have people who print different things that will be for sale, like cards and posters and tablets.
… We also have a print gallery, original prints that were made and printed by various printmaking methods. They’ll be for sale at the fair. “There’s always somebody to answer your questions,” he added. The fair is the group’s major fundraiser. In the past, it has helped the group fund the Letterpress Printing Center on the campus of Thaddeus Stevens College, which was closed down in 2023. However, earlier this year, the group was donated land for a permanent home in Willow Street. The group is amid a fundraising
campaign for the new home, which will be located behind Graphic Crafts Inc., 300 Beaver Valley Pike, Willow Street. The club initially estimated that around $200,000 would be needed for the project, but rising costs and inflation have caused that number to double to $400,000. “Every time my phone rings and it’s one of my vendors, I cringe,” Kulakowsky explained. “My donations are not keeping up with the cost of materials, but we’re in the process of writing grants, and hopefully we’ll be able to get some grants from some various organizations to help offset the
cost of this building.” Sept. 18 is National Letterpress Appreciation Day, so the fair is always held on the Saturday closest to that date, Kulakowsky explained. The .918 Club meets the fourth Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at The Studios in The Candy Factory, 342 N. Queen St., Lancaster, which is in the same complex as the group’s Heritage Press museum. Everyone is welcome, and the .918 Club is always seeking volunteers. The museum is staffed by volunteers from noon to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays and on First Friday nights.

The meal will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Takeout orders for potpie and coleslaw are due by Sunday, Sept. 20. Church members begin cooking several days before the potpie supper. Although the preparation can be hard work, it offers another opportunity to enjoy fellowship with friends, committee co-chair Petra King said.

“Everybody comes and helps,” she said. “Everyone has a role. Anyone who comes late ends up doing the dishes, which is much appreciated.” The church will usher in the holiday season with its Christmas bazaar from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7. Offerings will include arts and crafts, jewelry, gifts and homemade baked goods, jams and jellies. Church members will also sell breakfast sandwiches and quarts of homemade beef vegetable, chicken corn and French onion soup. Proceeds will benefit the church’s missions. On Saturday, Nov. 14, the church will host a free baked potato bar that is open to the community. With the event just three days from Veterans Day, veterans who attend will receive a small gift. The baked potato bar will be open from 5 to 7 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis. The meal will include baked potatoes and a variety of toppings, such as cheese, broccoli, bacon, chili, sour cream and butter, as well as chocolate chip cookies and vanilla ice cream for dessert. The program will be held downstairs in the Grace Room, and someone will be on hand to guide newcomers to the meeting place. Michael McNulty, a local financial adviser and fiduciary, will speak about bringing one’s personal finances under better control, including making a financial plan that sets up defenses against bad spending habits while proactively pursuing solutions to financial problems through sound investments and debt reduction. McNulty noted that his goal in offering the workshop is to alleviate anxiety by recommending strategies for both increasing income and decreasing unnecessary expenses. The workshop, based on the “How Money Works” financial education guide, is being offered in conjunction with the church’s Empowered by Grace mental wellness ministry. The ministry coordinator, Kelly Dennis, is a licensed mental wellness professional serving the local community. The workshop is open to the public as part of Millersville Community Church’s monthly Circles of Strength mental wellness seminars, which address a wide range of strategies for promoting good mental health. We are seeking a reliable and hardworking Nursery Operations Specialist to keep our woody, plant nursery running smoothly. This hands-on role splits time between the plants, maintenance, and nursery operations. You will be responsible for operating equipment (tractors and skid steers), driving 16’ and 26’ box trucks for local deliveries, assisting in facility maintenance, and participating in the hands-on growing of plants. Horticultural work may include but is not limited to seed collection, propagation, shearing, pruning, and staking of plants. The ideal candidate enjoys working outdoors and possesses the physical strength to regularly lift 30-35 pounds. The work is seasonal in nature, requiring longer hours in the Spring/Fall and shorter hours in the Summer/Winter. Assistance with weekend duties during the growing season is required, this is a shared responsibility and generally occurs every 3rd weekend.
