The Schreiber Center for Pediatr ic Development is making a splash to celebrate its 90th anniversary. The center, a t 6 2 5 C o m m u n i t y Way, Lancaster, invites everyone in the community to attend the 38th annual Duckie Race & Festival from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 13. The free, family-friendly
festival will include activities, entertainment, food and inclusive races, all while supporting the nonprofit center’s efforts to provide therapy services to children throughout central Pennsylvania. It has taken some time, but Mental Health America (MHA) of Lancaster-Lebanon Counties’ Suicide Prevention Conference has picked up steam. It’s making a difference. “The quality of the conference is improving,” said Kim McDevitt, who’s been MHA of LancasterLebanon Counties’ executive director for nine years. “This conference is so packed with such great education. Folks are fully engaged and asking good questions. It gives me hope when I see our community coming together year after year. We all have a responsibility in this. To see people continuing to come tells me they really care about (preventing) suicide.” The organization’s seventh annual Suicide Prevention Conference will be conducted from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17, at DoubleTree Resort, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster. This year’s conference theme is “Hope in Action: A Community Approach to Suicide Prevention.” That Thursday’s agenda will feature four one-hour breakout sessions, during which 16 topics will be addressed, including finding stillness, how faith and journaling bring peace to an anxious mind, hope beyond the visible, maternal mortality related to mental health, when clinicians grieve, and the power of sounds and spoken word. Delivering the keynote address will be Dr. Jay Breneman, who’s the director of firearm suicide prevention for CeaseFire Pennsylvania. Interested individuals can register for the Suicide Prevention

The 100-meter Duckling Dash for children ages 2 to 12 will begin at 3:30 p.m. Participants in the 1-mile Duckie Dash, at 4 p.m., can run, walk or roll along an accessible paved course. Service animals also are welcome. Tristin Mohr, one of Schreiber’s 2026 Ambassadors, will be among those lining up for the Duckling Dash. Tristin, age 5, who has cerebral palsy, recently graduated from Schreiber’s S.T.A.R.S. Preschool and receives physical, occupational and speech therapy at the center. His family, therapists and community members cheered him on as he completed last year’s event using his reverse walker.

“Every year, the Duckie Race & Festival reminds us what our community makes possible,” DeBord said. “Seeing children like Tristin participate alongside their families and friends is what this day is all about. It’s a celebration of their abilities and of the community that has stood behind Schreiber families for 90 years.” Community members will have an opportunity to support Schreiber by “adopting” rubber duckies throughout the festival. Each duckie purchased ser ves as an entr y to a $2,500 grand prize giveaway, the winner of which will be announced after the festival concludes. The UnSinkables, Schre i b e r ’s m o d e r n b a n d featuring older teens and young adults of all abilities, will provide live music at the festival. The band’s lineup includes 2026 Sch-
reiber Ambassador Cora Hussar on drums. A dditional activities for the entire family will include pony rides, carnival and lawn games, arts and crafts, balloon art and food trucks. Community members also can check out the Lancaster Public Library’s on-the-go mobile library and classic British sports cars from the Lanco MG Club. A sensory-friendly space will be available for children who need a break from the excitement. Schreiber serves about 2,000 children each year through outpatient therapy, early childhood education, recreation and family support programs. Thanks to generous community support through events such as the festival, the center never turns away a child due to a family’s inability to pay. “Proceeds from duck
adoptions, race registrations and other event fundraising help cover the gap between what it costs Schreiber to provide pediatric therapy and what Medicaid and commercial insurance reimburse,” DeBord said. “That support allows Schreiber to continue serving children re gardless of their families’ financial circumstances.” The Duckie R ace & Festival is presented by Lancaster Toyota and Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. Community members may adopt duckies online in advance or on race day. Registration for the Duckie Dash and Duckling Dash will be available from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on the day of the festival. We have made progress with the stigma, but there are too many people still struggling in silence. It gives people insight and motivation, and they walk away with tools they can use right away.” In 2025, a total of 87 Lancaster County residents were victims of suicide, the highest total since 2012. This year, the locale is on pace to reduce that number. “Suicide is ver y complicated,” said McDevitt. “Not everyone who dies from suicide has a mental health issue. Prevention comes in detection and early intervention. I think our work has really forced a redirection of the stigma. Many folks still don’t know

It’s a very difficult subject matter, but people come together to talk about solutions. Like, ‘What could we be doing differently? What could we be doing better?’ No single organization can prevent suicide; it takes a community.” More than 270 individuals are expected to attend the conference, including health care and mental health care professionals, educators, company employees, faith leaders and community members. “It’s for everyone,” said McDevitt, a resident of Manheim Township. “It’s a really neat event. It’s so heartfelt. You see people

the warning signs of suicide. Loneliness and social isolation increase the risk of suicide. Those are the types of things we’re going to be talking about at the conference.” MHA of Lancaster-Lebanon Counties oversees the suicide prevention coalition, which established the conference in 2018. The Lancaster County Bird Club will meet on Thursday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m. at the North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster. Michael Moore will present “Sparrows Simplified: Making Sense of LBJs (Little Brown Jobs).” Many birders struggle with identifying sparrows, referring to them as LBJs - which stands for “little brown jobs” - or sparrow species. Moore will discuss and then blend the two main approaches to identification - the Peterson System and the Cape May School - to help people identify sparrows. Each of the 16 species of regularly occurring sparrows in the local area will be compared, with discussion of finding and identifying rarities. Moore is a retired biology professor and a past president of the Delaware Ornithological Society. A birder since middle school, he completed a doctorate at the University of Washington in the field of endocrinology of white-crowned sparrows. After doing postdoctorate work at the University of Texas in Austin, he served on the biology faculty at Arizona State University for 27 years. He moved to the University of Delaware in 2009 and retired from the institution after 11 years. He has been

At the end of the day, it’s really satisfying giving someone keys to their first house. I help people get into their homes, and that’s very satisfying.” From 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 13, at Penn Medicine Park , 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, Life Changes Realty Group will host a celebratory community outreach/fundraising event called Million Reasons Festival. The fair will recognize the $1 million that Life Changes Realty Group has donated to charities impacting Lancaster
County. T he free event will include food trucks, an artisans’ market, a cornhole tournament, other games, a dunk tank, face painting and bounce houses, and the kids’ area at Penn Medicine Park will be open for play. “Buying a house is the biggest financial decision that most people make,” said Cross. “When I meet people and give them my spiel, I talk about the payit- for ward program. It demonstrates the service over the sale. As a sales tactic, it works out great. Clients will say, ‘Oh, I really like that.’” Through the pay-it-forward program, it’s taken Life Changes Realty Group 13 years to reach the $1 million donation milestone. Cross’ contribution to that sum is more than $4,000 of take-home pay. “It’s incredible how we’ve been able to do it, especially as piecemeal,” said Cross. “There’s a snowball effect

Dona Fisher Shares Change of Pace Message It’s kind of like when producers change a popular book into a successful movie. Only this time, a popular Bible studies session is being turned into a successful book. Dona Fisher has enjoyed s o much s uccess w i t h Change of Pace Bible studies that she’s decided to share its message with a broader audience. “My prayer when people read my book is that they will understand the beauty of reconciliation and the need to break the chain of generational sin,” said Fisher. This year’s edition of the annual Change of Pace Bible studies will be held every Thursday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Lancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Road, Lancaster. The Bible study sessions will begin on Thursday, Sept. 17, and run through Thursday, Nov. 19. The Change of Pace Bible studies are free to attend, and a freewill offering will
be accepted. Free child care will also be available at the church. “We start our morning with a lig ht breakfast and worship time singing to gether,” said Fisher, a resident of Manheim Township. “Bible studies encourage us to read God’s word, and reading enhances our wisdom with change of pace. We will also have a book swap this fall. Do you have a stack of books you have read and would enjoy sharing with others?” This year’s Change of Pace Bible studies will offer two courses of direction, “One in a Million” by Priscilla Shirer and “God Won’t Leave You There” by Anne Graham Lotz and daughter Rachel-Ruth Lotz Wright. Each of the studies contain video sections, which will be followed by small group discussions. As many as 100 women from all over Lancaster County attend the nondenominational ladies’ Bible study.

The Lancaster County Art Association, 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, has announced its fall schedule of art classes. New this season is a Beginner Hand Building clay class with Rachel Parisan, which will meet on Mondays, Sept. 14 to Oct. 12. Brabson is the author of the book “Life of Thad Stevens: What Part of ‘All Men Created Equal’ Do You Not Understand?” She received her B.S. in elementary education from Millersville Uni-
versity and both her M.Ed. and Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction from Penn State University. Since her retirement from the Penn Manor School District, where she served as a classroom teacher and principal, Brabson has written three books, including the book on Stevens. She is a member of both the Millersville Area Historical Society and the Conestoga Area Historical Society and volunteers at LancasterHistory. vices, a towing business, a tree-trimming concern, and a fire truck courtesy of Blue Rock Fire Rescue (BRFR). As in the past, all funds raised by the event will benefit BRFR of Millersville. Past events have allowed the Lions to d o n ate a s m uc h a s $4,000 to the volunteer fire rescue. “We are trying to raise $8,000 for the fire company (this year),” stated Dumm. University to Mark Anniversary of 9/11 Millersville University will hold a memorial program on Friday, Sept. 11, commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Oasis Ministry Plans Bible Study Oasis Women’s Ministry of Pennsylvania will offer a new session of Bible studies beginning on Wednesd ay, Sept . 16. The group invites all women in the community to gather on Wednesd ays throug h Dec. 2 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Providence Church, 269 Cinder Road, New Providence. The featured study will be “Joshua: Every Good Promise Fulfilled” by Jen Wilkin. The book of Joshua traces the faithfulness of God as the people of Israel journey step by step out of the wilderness into the longawaited land of promise. It is a story of transitions in which modern readers are invited to consider what it means to walk in obedience and trust in God’s timing. The themes of Joshua echo forward to the New Testament and Jesus Christ, who leads His people into an eternal inheritance. We are seeking a reliable and hardworking Nursery Operations Specialist to keep our woody, plant nursery running smoothly. This hands-on role splits time between the plants, maintenance, and nursery operations. You will be responsible for operating equipment (tractors and skid steers), driving 16’ and 26’ box trucks for local deliveries, assisting in facility maintenance, and participating in the hands-on growing of plants. Horticultural work may include but is not limited to seed collection, propagation, shearing, pruning, and staking of plants. The ideal candidate enjoys working outdoors and possesses the physical strength to regularly lift 30-35 pounds.
