Cylo Is a Lancaster Homer BY JEFF FALK

Cylo is a character, with character. “Cylo’s role as the mascot is to bring the energy to each game day and create excitement about our team in the community,” said Madeline Davis, who is the Lancaster Stormers’ community and fan engagement coordinator, as well as one of Cylo’s handlers. “Typically, professional sports teams do have a mascot. Cylo is a very important staple to our organization and is well recognized in the community.” Cylo is the official mascot of the Lancaster Stormers professional baseball club, which plays its home games at Penn Medicine Park, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The friendly Cylo plays a huge role in the Stormers’ overall fan experience, as important off the field as
is a great entrance greeter, loves to give high fives and arm wrestle, and will sit with fans to watch the game.” A minor league franchise, the Lancaster Stormers compete in the Atlantic League, a circuit whose season runs from late April to early September. As for Cylo, he is in a league of his own. With his help, the Stormers have one of the most loyal fanbases in the Atlantic League, drawing an average of more than 4,000 spectators at each home contest. “Cylo is our biggest cheerleader and does a great job of pumping up the crowd,” said Davis. “My favorite thing about Cylo is how outgoing and funny he is. I grew up coming to Stormers games and have loved him since I was a kid. Nate Young ’s no t f iddling around. On June 12, the West Lampeter Township multifaceted musician released his debut album, “The Lighthouse,” a folk music-oriented work. “I just hope people enjoy it,” Nate said. “I hope it resonates with them. I hope it gives some peace.” The collection of recordings, listed under his full name, Nathaniel E. Young, is available on all major platforms, including Apple Music,
Spotify, and YouTube. “(The reception has) been really good,” Nate said. “On release day, I made sure to reach out to a bunch of my friends and family and tell them it’s out, take a listen. It was great to get the positive reception from them. But also, more on a global scale it’s been doing pretty well, especially for a first release from kind of a smaller artist. I’m pretty satisfied with it. It’s been reaching a lot of people. Church Plans Anniversary Celebration
DELIVERY UPDATES
Conestoga UMC, 71 Sandhill Road, Conestoga, will celebrate its 170th anniversary on Sunday, Sept. 20, at the 10:30 a.m. worship service. Everyone is invited to attend. Former youth group members and baseball team members from the 1970s will have a reunion for the occasion. The Rev. Ronald Waite, who pastored the church 50 years ago, and his wife, Nancy, will be in attendance. One of the highlights of the service will be the playing of the 1902 Mason and Hamlin pump organ made in Boston, Mass., by Alice Laurer. The pump organ was originally paid for by church members and Andrew Carnegie. Each member contributed $125 for the organ to be placed in the church in 1903.

We also have a patio in the backyard, and we enjoy sharing our meals outside. We also have a water feature to go with the garden.” There’s something calming and medicinal associated with humans physically connecting with an Earth that sustains them. Gardening also has a way of triggering our nurturing mechanisms. “I just like getting my hands in the dirt,” said Heil. “I’ve pretty much always been a gardener. I come from a farming family. I’ve always had an inclination to do some gardening.” Many of the same feelings Heil has about gardening she shares with the other 50 dues-paying

members of the garden club. That bond possesses the power to inspire strong friendships and uplifting camaraderie. “They’re women from all kinds of backgrounds,” said Heil. “That’s what makes it very interesting. You learn about all these pursuits people have. “We share our pursuit of gardening interests,” she added. “We have a lot of fun; we like to learn and share good times. The purpose of the club is to foster interests that are all about gardening.” The club periodically hosts open houses and embarks on regular field trips. Its meetings feature presentations from gardening experts and an Americanized informal tea that includes coffee and appetizers in addition to tea. It’s not just an observation program. “Our club is open,” Heil continued. “We just have a joy, and we want to share that. We’d like to get other people interested.” The club meets monthly at 1 p.m. on the fourth Thursday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 Saint Thomas Road, Lancaster. The meetings are open to the public. “When I became a retiree, I was able to spend more time gardening and developing more perennials,” said Heil. “As we get older, we have to evaluate what we can do and we
can’t do.” The garden club was established in 1947. Over the last 80 years, the club has promoted, advocated for and explored the beauty of gardening. “In the 1930s, there was a men’s garden club in Lancaster County,” said Heil. “Since they did not allow women, women started their own garden club. In the beginning, new members had to be approved. While banners have been hung and players have come and gone, the sturdy Cylo has been one of the Stormers’ few constants. “Cylo is named after Cy Young,” said Davis. “His full name is Cyloicious L. Stormer and has been that since the Stormers first debuted in 2005. I hope everyone gets the chance to meet Cylo. You know where to find him.” Outside of Penn Medicine Park, Cylo makes dozens of local appearances each year. He’s just as comfortable reading books to preschoolers as he is visiting residents of retirement communities.
“I do schedule the appearances,” said Davis, a resident of the city. “It’s a lot of fun connecting with different people and organizations, and it’s always rewarding to see faces light up when he arrives. Cylo appeals to all ages, and Cylo loves everyone.” “Cylo is very easily recognized in the Lancaster area,” concluded Davis. “When traveling downtown, we often receive honks from passing cars and we are frequently stopped for pictures. Pequea Creek Races Planned Sickman’s Mill and Music for Everyone will team up to hold the 2026 Pequea Creek Races from Friday to Sunday, Sept. 11 to 13, at Sickman’s Mill, 671 Sandhill Road, Pequea. The Pequea Creek Races invite teams to put their creativity and teamwork to the test as they design and build a boat using a provided package of materials. Every team receives the same supplies, but what they create is entirely up to them. Throughout the weekend, teams will compete for awards recognizing design, creativity, beauty, humor, and speed on the water. Teams will gather at Sickman’s Mill at 5 p.m. on Sept. 11 to receive their building materials and plan for building their boats. Teams will return at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, to construct their boats and then enjoy live
entertainment and refreshments. On Sept. 13 at noon, teams will put their boats to the test and compete for the trophy as they race down the Pequea Creek. With “The Lighthouse” receiving rave reviews, Nate has already started working on his second album. “I have a bunch of songs put together right now,” he said. “I’m not quite sure how it’s all going to come together, but I’ve done a lot of recording with my mom on the harp. And then I have just a bunch of other songs that I’ve made over the past couple months and then more stuff that I’m going to record at school. I’ve got a lot of friends who are musicians at school, so we’re going to do some recording together down there.” Nate’s not sure if he will pursue a career in music. “My primary goal, what I see is my vocation, is to be a father,” he said. “I just (want) to be a family man. Oftentimes being a professional musician, especially a composer, it’s really hard to feed a family of a decent size just off music. I’m thinking about it, praying about it, just kind of seeing where God leads me. If He wants me to go that direction and I find a lot of success with it, then that’s great. But if not, that’s okay. It’s always going to be a part of my life even if I’m not making bank off of music. I still love doing it, and I’m not necessarily doing it for the money anyway.”

New Senior Citizens’ Group to Meet Conestoga Area Senior Citizens, a new group for senior citizens in Conestoga and surrounding areas, will have its initial gathering on Wednesday, Sept. 16, from 10 a.m. to noon at Conestoga United Methodist Church, 71 Sandhill Road. For me, it’s music.” The album, which took eight months to record, was 12 years in the making. Nate began playing the violin when he was 7 years old. His mother, Kristin, is a professional pianist and harpist. “She really helped nurture that in me,” Nate said. “I would find instruments and ask for instruments for my birthday.” His father, Joel, has also been instrumental. “My dad is the number one emotional supporter,” Nate said. “He does not play music at all, but he’s really been supportive of me.” The father and son enjoy spending time together outdoors hunting, fishing, and hiking. “That really kind of found its way into the music too because most of my music is more naturally inspired,” Nate said. He has been classically trained by Tara Kenkelen. “She was my primary violin teacher all through from the time I was 7 to the time I graduated,” Nate said. “She’s an amazing violinist, so she really helped me with that. And then in high school, I started getting into like traditional Irish music and folk music. I really enjoyed the sound of it. I just really connected with it, so I started employing my classical training to play fiddle music as well. I started incorporating that into my compositions as well. And that’s kind of how the sound was

which is more what I’m going for, not just the numbers. It’s been a blessing.” The 19-year-old recorded the album made up of original songs in his home. Nate plays the violin, ukulele, and guitar on the LP. “It was fun,” he said. “I love composing and being able to figure different things out on different instruments. I really enjoy that. I made most of it in my room, and there are a lot of different artists on it as well, all friends of mine. They contributed as well with vocals, piano, percussions. It’s a very collaborative work, which is fun. Music is more fun when you do it with other people.” “The Lighthouse” was inspired by a book of the same name by Michael D. O’Brien. “It’s a beautiful book,” said Nate. “I read it years ago, and it really resonated with me like no other book has except the Bible. It was really inspiring. For months, I really wanted to write something about that because that’s just where I go. I just wanted to let it out in a musical way. Months went by, and then finally I started and it all kind of flowed. It’s definitely a God moment. It just all came together.” He said it’s his way of communicating his feelings. “Music for me is the easiest way to express the inner workings of the soul and your emotions and everything like that,” said Nate, who throughout high school was a concert master for the Lancaster Academy for the Performing
