Blue Rock Fire Rescue’s new, state-of-the-art building will be more than a firehouse.
It will be a firehome for the volunteers who selflessly staff it.
“We decided to build something that would be good for the volunteers, that would be respectful for the volunteers, that they’d be proud of,” said Blue Rock fire commissioner Duane Hagelgans.
“Often when you have a newer station, you can recruit new members. And it being along (Route) 441, it’s a high-visibility area down there.”
The organization recently began a $10 million fundraising campaign, called
consideration. “I think it’s important that people realize that we’re building this because it’s needed,” said Hagelgans. “We’re not just saying, ‘Hey, we’re going to raise $10 million to build a building.’ This is something that in our long-range plan we need for the township.”
Blue Rock’s station in Washington Boro is small and connected to the former civic center. The station in Highville is in a 100-year-old building owned by the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority.
“Between the Highville station and the Washington Boro station, they run most of the calls,” Hagelgans said. “They run jointly anyway, so why not build one facility that serves our members from both locations? The idea is to consolidate the two stations in one, make it a new, nicer station. We’re looking at the next 50 years. We’re not looking at the next five years. What will happen in Manor Township over the next 25 or 50 years? That’s why we’re saying by having one station down there, knowing our call volume and knowing where

Callie Tomblin’s title may be program coordinator for Second Grace, but she’s actually an investment adviser. She’s helping her clients invest in themselves.
“I really believe in the social capital theory, where if people don’t have resources that many of us take for granted, they are kind of behind,” she said. “A lot of the women in our program are in that situation.”
Second Grace pairs young single mothers - “Graces” - with trained advocates called “Sages.” Each Sage helps a Grace navigate life, whether that’s providing transportation to appointments or getting a Grace connected to community services like food banks or GED classes. Sages might also just spend time with their Grace in a positive way, socializing and offering connection.
There are currently eight women in the Second Grace program, which focuses on women between the ages of 18 and 25, although the organization will accept Graces outside of that age range depending on the circumstances.
Tomblin, who is pursuing a master’s degree in social work, said the program coordinator position appealed to her because she wants to make a difference. She came on board in May, and she’s excited about the goals she’s set for herself.
their own. “I was telling someone the other day, ‘If I ended up homeless tomorrow, I would have 10 people who would take me in, but these girls don’t have that.’ They don’t have that support system.”

“Because we’re a nonprofit, there is so much we want to achieve, but it’s not always easy,” she shared. “My main goal right now is to get the program a vehicle, because over half of our girls don’t have transportation. Maybe we can teach the girls how to drive and also try to get vehicles for these girls. Not having reliable transportation is a struggle in Lancaster. It’s difficult for these girls to get to jobs or child care without transportation.”
Tomblin’s role also includes applying for grants, which she is currently in the midst of doing as she looks for a donated vehicle.
“This program isn’t like anything I have ever seen before, and I think it’s a program that’s really needed,” said Tomblin, noting that many of the women in the program are completely on
She compared Second Grace to programs like Big Brothers Big Sisters for the social supports it provides.
“Many of these women are just now entering adult life and the workforce, and they don’t have any help or resources,” she said. “We call them ‘at risk’ because they’re just surviving and trying to get through.”
She’s eager to work alongside the women as they find stability.
“We’re trying to help them with mentorship and anything we can help them with,” she said. “This is not a one-size-fits-all program. We want to ask each person, ‘What do you specifically need?’ and then we try to help them as much as we can.”
Second Grace began in 2021 when founder Candace Abel was moved to start the organization after volunteering as a Court Appointed Special Advocate and noting that sup -

ville, 317 N. George St., Millersville.
For additional details, contact Miranda Hoffman at 717-940-4762.
“She saw this need, and she believes in this program,” Tomblin said. “She’s the reason this program is so amazing.” Abel founded the program in Mount Joy, but it currently operates out of Community Place on Washington, 105 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown. It serves women throughout Lancaster County.
Many of the Sages in the program have had personal experiences that help them connect with their Grace.
“A lot of the mentors involved with us have said things like, ‘I had a baby at 17, and I would have loved to have a program like this when I was that age,’” Tomblin remarked.
The organization is always looking for women to serve as mentors or help in any capacity as a volunteer.
“We definitely need Sages, but if someone doesn’t want to be a mentor or they think that’s too much on their plate, we are looking for people who want to drive or provide child care at our meetings, or if someone is an expert on something,
we’d love to have them come in and talk to the girls,” said Tomblin.
Women who are interested in becoming Sages may sign up for a training to be held on Saturday, Sept. 27. The comprehensive program will provide background on expectations and responsibilities of the Sages.
After the training, Sages are expected to set aside six to 10 hours a month to meet with their Grace.
“That can look like texting every week, phone calls, getting together to fill out a resume,” Tomblin said. “It can look like a lot of different areas of contact.”
She noted that the program is never lacking for Graces, so the need for mentors is great.
“We really need volunteers,” she said. “This program can help so many people out, and it doesn’t take a lot to make a difference in a Grace’s life.”
For more information on volunteering or details on the upcoming training, visit https://secondgrace .org/mentor, call 717-4350207 or email Tomlin at Callie.secondgrace@gmail .com.

The concert is the third in a series of free summer concerts sponsored by West Lampeter Township and the Lancaster South Rotary Club.
Selections will include “His Honor March,” Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Atlantic Zephyrs” trombone solo, “The Lion King Medley,” “Cole Porter Medley,” “Big Fun In The Sun,” “Swing’s
The Thing,” “Irish Medley,” “Bombasto March,” “Blue Moon,” “Wooly Bully,” and “Crazy Little Thing Called Love.” The band is directed by Howard Boots, and Clark Lash will be the vocalist. Attendees should bring lawn chairs. In the case of rain, the concert will be performed inside Lampeter United Methodist Church, 1101 Village Road (Route 741), Lancaster. Still evolving, the story of Ermias Wogari’s professional life is one overflowing with destiny and meantto-bes. An internship at the local Precision Cobotics seems to have triggered that work destiny or, at the very least, re-affirmed it.
“I always wanted to develop and create something or solve a problem or make a product, just bring something new to this Earth,” said Wogari. “I’ve always had this entrepreneurial spirit. All the things I’m learning here are going to help me design in the future. My parents are from Ethiopia, I’ve been there three times, and it’s really touched my heart. I want to do something that’s going to help other people. From there, we’ll see how life goes.”
Wogari is employed full time as an automation engineer overseeing the RoboticWorX program at Precision Cobotics, 148 W. Airport Road, Lititz. He’s worked in that role for about a year now, after completing a direction-altering internship secured through an existing relationship between Precision Cobotics and Millersville University, where Wogari was an automation and intelligent robotics engineering student before graduating in 2023.
Specializing in robotic automation solutions, Precision Cobotics applies existing technology for manufacturing clients to make their workforces more efficient.
“After I graduated, I really didn’t know where I was going to work in this field,” said Wogari. “I was looking
all over, and I saw an ad on LinkedIn that said Precision Cobotics was looking for a senior engineer. I didn’t have any of those qualifications, but I applied anyway because I wanted to get an opportunity to talk to the president, John Bridgen, and see if there were any opportunities. He offered me the internship, and I said I was interested. Everything just worked out so perfectly. I came to Precision Cobotics, and it’s been the beginning of a very, very amazing journey.”
During his yearlong internship, Wogari worked, learned and applied the knowledge he acquired at Millersville to his position at Precision Cobotics. At the conclusion of his internship, he was offered a full-time position at Precision Cobotics, a role that he began during the summer of 2024.
we were on calls, that we’re better off. If eventually we ever have to have career people, that would work. But our hope is that we can have volunteers from now until forever. There are a lot of places that still rely heavily on volunteers, and we’re one of them.”
The new station will house two engines, two tankers, three boats, and a special operations trailer that holds an ATV. Hagelgans said it will probably have a substation in there, so the Manor Township police will be able to have a facility on that end of the township. There will be room for an emergency operations center and space to put an ambulance.
The new firehouse will
have some sleeping accommodations for volunteers, which will come in handy in situations like flooding. It will also enable the company to keep all of its equipment inside.
“The idea is to build something that’s functional, that’s nice,” said Hagelgans. “We’re not trying to build a Taj Mahal. We’re being respectful, and it’s going to be expensive no matter what.”
The department is seeking support through individual donations, corporate sponsorships, and community partnerships.
“The goal is to hopefully raise the money and not have to go into debt to do it,” said Hagelgans. To make a donation, go to www
.bluerockfire.com/.
There are opportunities to have names inscribed on bricks on a pathway and for naming rights to some parts of the firehouse, like the rain garden.
Blue Rock Fire Rescue has approximately 100 volunteers and serves a 55-square-mile area that
includes six miles of the Susquehanna River, while responding to more than 700 emergency calls each year.
“I just think it’s very important that the township recognizes how important this is for the volunteers and for our community,” Hagelgans said. “There’s not a lot of land out there, but there’s a lot of land area. There are farms and businesses and the Washington Boro area and the river that need protected. Our volunteers give to the community, and we’re hoping the community helps support our volunteers.”
The Penn Manor High School Class of 1975 will hold its 50th class reunion on Saturday, Sept. 20, at Queen Street Bistro, 201 N. Queen St., Lancaster. Doors will open at 6 p.m. For more information, contact Sharron Nolt Gilbert at sharron@tsgilbert .com.
Joseph’s Table at Ascension Lutheran Church, 600 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street, will offer a summer picnic-themed takeout meal to members of the community on Thursday, Aug. 21.
Meals may be picked up from 5:30 to 6 p.m. Guests should enter the parking lot on Penn Grant Road and exit onto Shiprock Road. There is no charge.
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, has announced on-site railroading merit badge workshops for Saturdays, Sept. 20 and Nov. 15.
The programs will offer an opportunity for boys and girls ages 11 through 17 who are involved in Scouting to learn by working with historic artifacts and model trains. The daylong workshops will feature various railroad-themed activities,

Precision Cobotics is sponsoring seven interns, a majority of whom have graduated from or are currently attending school at Millersville University.
“I’ve worked a lot of jobs since I was 14 or 15,” said Wogari, a resident of Lancaster city who graduated from McCaskey in 2019. “All of my jobs never required me to use critical thinking or problem-solving skills. When I first started the internship, one of my hardest problems was getting out of that mindset. It took me over a year to break that habit of not thinking for myself. Now I can think for myself. Now I can always apply that.”
Wogari has been interested in engineering and automa-
including tours, demonstrations, and a G-scale model railroad simulation. All requirements will be fulfilled in a single day. A unique Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania “Railroading Merit Badge” patch is an extra reward for participants who complete the workshop at the museum.
Scouts must be accompanied by an adult at all times. The workshops are capped at 25 Scouts each and will be filled on a first-come,
tion for almost as long as he can recall. But throughout his journey there have been milestones that have flamed that interest.
“I remember vividly when I was under 10, I loved Legos a lot,” said Wogari. “I don’t know why, but I just loved building. I always loved things that require creativity. When I was young, my parents encouraged me and prayed for me to be an engineer. It gave me hope for the future. It never limited me.”
Backed by that spirit of curiosity and adventure nurtured at Precision Cobotics, Wogari has a bright future filled with possibilities.
“The internship opened my eyes in general,” said Wogari. “When you’re not self-centered in how you

think, I think that’s the biggest thing in my life. It’s the little things you do that build opportunities. Just never stop believing and have a heart for helping other people. Never giving up is one of the most important aspects of successful people.”
