Teacher Becomes Prolific Author

Author Sheila Schmitt is truly an overnight sensation.
The Conestoga resident has written four books in a nine-month span, the first of which was crafted while many people were sleeping.
“Lucky Penny” was self-published through Amazon in October 2025. “I couldn’t sleep one night, and I knew I had the story in my head,” she said. “Something made me write it, and I wrote it on my phone in the middle of the night, and then I revised it. It took a little while to do revisions. Then I just sent it to (Amazon), and they had it published within two months. That one went really fast.”
“Lucky Penny’s Saturday Surprise” was released in December 2025, followed by “Ornery Little Kitty Goes to the Barn” in January 2026 and “The Moo Crew” in July. All of the books are available on Amazon.

Not everybody is a leader. But almost all of us have some leadership skills.
Leadership Lancaster’s role in the community is to uncover leadership abilities, foster them and help others to make the most of them.

The auxiliary annually awards $500 grants to two high school graduates who will continue their education in the medical field.
Madelyn, a Penn Manor High School graduate who plans to pursue an R.N. degree from St. Joseph’s University in Lancaster, viewed earning the scholarship funds as a fitting tribute to her grandfather, Lewis Oswald. “It means honoring my grandfather’s legacy,” she said.
Lewis Oswald, who died in April 2025, served in the Vietnam conflict. “It meant a lot to be able to get to receive this award and be able to honor him and his name and what he did for our country,” said Madelyn.
Madelyn has earmarked the money to help pay for textbooks, clinical garb, and lab fees.
Kylie, a graduate of Hempfield High School, will also attend St. Joseph’s, where she will study radiologic technography.
“It’s big because anything helps for college, and I’m grateful for anything I get to help pursue my education and my future goals,” Kylie said.
She also serves as a volunteer during auxiliary events.
“A leader is someone who sees potential in either another person or they see potential in an idea,”
Auxiliary president Kim Sherr explained why the organization awards the funds to students who will enter the health sector. “I think we need students to go into the medical field. We need medical people,” said Sherr. “It’s important for the future, for their future also. It’s steady employment. It’s meaningful, and there’s a lot of opportunity

“The Moo Crew” was inspired by Schmitt’s livestock. “I always had the story in my head because people aren’t used to others having pet steers, so they get a lot of attention from people,” she said. “People will stop - family, friends, and even some strangers will just stop and ask if they can pet them because they’re really friendly. It was just a matter of getting the story in my head onto paper.”
Schmitt and her husband, Greg, are both third-grade teachers at Bart-Colerain Elementary in the Solanco School District. They have a total of 20 animals - three Great Danes, three roosters, two horses, four steers, and eight cats.
the community. Sheila’s parents, Betty and Ken Neff, live in an adjacent house, and so does her twin sister, Shelly Kyle, who is also a teacher. Ken helps take care of their animals when the Schmitts are away.
Sheila Schmitt’s students have read the first three books and will peruse “The Moo Crew” when classes resume this fall. “They love it,” she said. “It teaches them all about writing and how to write a book, and I share the whole process with them. The second thing is they know our animals by name. We talk about them all the time and use them for everything. It’s neat for them to see the animals published now. (On July 14), a friend of ours who’s a teacher in Solanco asked me to read at Wesley Church, so I got to share my book at story time. I got to read it to a whole lot of kids and parents yesterday, and that was neat.”
Historical Society Plans Program
The Millersville Area Historical Society will offer a presentation at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8, in the Millersville Borough Administration and Police Building, 100 Municipal Drive. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m.

Penny arrived in 2018. Some Amish children were riding her on a trail when Penny’s arthritis flared up. The kids asked if they could house Penny in the Schmitts’ stable for a while, and Penny never left. Eighteen months later, a horse known as Whispering River collapsed in their yard while pulling a buggy during a heat wave, and he had a new home as well.
The Schmitts and their pets are surrounded by family. Her late grandparents Jacob and Mary Neff resided next door and are referenced in the books. The Neffs’ old red barn was renovated with help from
Schmitt isn’t finished writing books but will enjoy some wellearned rest. “I’m going to take a little break and enjoy just reading them,” said Schmitt. “It is neat to see people’s reactions to it, because a lot of people love animals. It’s just that this whole thing has just come full circle. That was really the theme of everything. It just includes so many people and so many neat relationships now. We have an amazing farrier that does our hooves for us, or we can call anytime we need anything. We have an amazing vet. We have hay. It’s amazing to see all the relationships and how people get so excited about animals.”
The Lancaster County Veterans Court is a treatment organization based on proven national research that provides veterans an opportunity to pursue appropriate therapies, while productively addressing associated legal problems. Shaw, who has been an active mentor with the court for the past 12 years, will offer an overview of the court and its mission. The program will conclude with a question-and-answer period.
Shaw, who is also a retired middle school science teacher, has published numerous military history articles for magazines and is author of the book “German & Spanish Military Rings.” A world traveler, the Millersville University graduate most recently spent time in Tanzania, where he participated in a wildlife safari. R&B Group to Perform at Celebrate Lancaster
The City of Lancaster has announced that Grammy Award-winning R&B group 112 will headline Celebrate Lancaster on Friday, Aug. 14, in downtown Lancaster.
The annual community festival draws thousands of residents and visitors to the first and 100 blocks of North Queen Street. It will run from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and it is free and open to the public.
Known for hits including “Peaches & Cream,” “Dance With Me,” and “Only You,” 112 rose to fame in the late 1990s and became one of R&B’s most successful groups of the era. The group’s signature sound still resonates with audiences around the world, with more than 7 million monthly listeners across streaming platforms.
This year’s Celebrate Lancaster theme, “Back to the Block,” celebrates the neighborhood block parties that have been a tradition in Lancaster for decades. In addition to the headline concert, the event will include local food trucks, classic games, artisan vendors, family-friendly activities, community resources, DJs, and live performances from regional performers. Live entertainment will begin at 5 p.m. on the stage in Binns Park, with 112 closing out the event.

Schulz Named to Fulton Board
Fulton Financial Corporation has announced the appointment of David S. Schulz as a member of its board of directors for a term commencing Sept. 14 and expiring at Fulton’s 2027 annual meeting of shareholders.
With the addition of Schulz, Fulton’s Board will have 11 members, and Schulz will serve on the audit and risk committees. He has also been appointed to the board of directors of Fulton’s banking subsidiary, Fulton Bank, N.A.
Schulz served as senior vice president and chief financial officer of Wesco International Inc. from 2016 to June 2020, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Wesco from June 2020 to February 2026, and executive vice president and special adviser to the CEO of Wesco
from February 2026 until his retirement on May 31.
Prior to joining Wesco, Schulz was senior vice president and chief operating officer of Armstrong Flooring Inc. and was previously senior vice president and chief financial officer of Armstrong World Industries Inc. and vice president of finance of the Armstrong Building Products division.
Before joining Armstrong World Industries in 2011, he held various financial leadership roles with Procter & Gamble and the J.M. Smucker Company. He was also an officer in the United States Marine Corps.
Schulz joined the board of Sterling Infrastructure Inc. in 2025, and he was appointed as chair of the audit committee in 2026. He also serves on the company’s compensation and talent development committee.

Sherr noted the VFW Post 7294 auxiliary works year-round to support the community. “Right before Christmas we gathered supplies and nonperishable food for Tenfold in Lancaster,” she said. “We are going to be doing that again. We donate to various community agencies, such as ambulance, fire, and police. We have community activities. We do an Easter
egg hunt every year for the community kids. We participate with the VFW in the Trunk or Treat for Halloween. Twice a year when the VFW has their chicken barbecues, we have some veterans come up here from Coatesville VA Hospital, and we provide them with the chicken barbecue meal. We play bingo with them and send them home with prizes. We’re always looking for new things to do.”

A community nonprofit located at 115 E. King St., Lancaster, Leadership Lancaster accomplishes its mission through training, exchanges of ideas, connection and collaboration and four key programs - college core class, core class, executive class and encore class. That range of classes allows Leadership Lancaster to bring out the best in individuals, regardless of their experience or their standings in the community.
“One of the things we ask our participants is ‘When did you first consider yourself a leader?’” said Kemble. “What it boils down to is that leadership is about caring about people you’re working with in the community, realizing your own unique set of skills and wanting to contribute to something bigger than yourself. At the end of the day, it’s about being your best self and achieving something great with people.
“We’re always looking to develop our programs,” Kemble continued. “We’re looking to get more involved with the community. We’re looking to work with nonprofits. We want people to feel more connected
to communities. Leadership is a continuous process. We’re all works in progress.”
Last year, Leadership Lancaster worked with more than 130 individuals seeking to hone their leadership skills. Those participants ranged in age from 19 to 70 - college students, working professionals and retirees - a great majority of whom either lived or worked in Lancaster County.

“The people who are coming to us are your neighbors,” said Kemble, a resident of the Manheim area. “We’re trying to have different walks of life. They are people who have moved to the United States. We’re trying to make sure we have people representing different pockets of the community. We just want to be good stewards of our community.”

Program to Explore Local Connection to Famous Writer
The Mount Joy Area Historical Society will host Michael Kaufhold as the guest speaker at the organization’s monthly meeting on Monday, Aug. 17, at 7 p.m. at the Cemetery Road Schoolhouse, 120 Fairview St., Mount Joy.
Kaufhold will present “Edgar A. Poe’s Formative Years and the Best Kept Secrets of His Link to Lancaster County.” Edgar Allan Poe’s grandparents lived in Lancaster County during the early days of the American Revolution, and as fierce patriots they had many of the same concerns felt by the young men who gathered around the Donegal Presbyterian Church Witness Tree. Kaufhold will reflect on Poe’s connections in Lancaster County, which aided the famous author during trying financial times, and will discuss the scope of Poe’s contributions to American literature. The presentation will employ slides and visuals, including old movie posters. It will conclude
with a question-and-answer time.
Poe was an American poet, writer, and literary critic who was regarded as a pioneer of Gothic and romantic tales and an early contributor to the emergence of science fiction.
Kaufhold is a current Millersville Borough Council member and a retired English teacher, who taught for 33 years at Penn Manor High School before retiring in 2013. He graduated from McCaskey High School in 1965 and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English at Millersville University.
Refreshments will be available following the program. The meeting is free and open to the public.
