Millersville Borough Planning a Night Out to Remember

Bigger and better.

That’s how Millersville Borough’s third annual National Night Out is shaping up.

The event is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the municipal building, 100 Municipal Drive, and in the parking lot of the adjacent Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home. The rain date is Wednesday, Aug. 5. Some off-site parking will be available at the borough park or John Herr’s, and Snyder’s will use golf carts to transport people back and forth.

“We’ve had great participation the past two years,” said Mary Lyons, a member of Millersville’s Civil Service Commission who helps organize National Night Out. “We’ve had about 400 attendees. I see that it’s going to continue to grow.”

Everything will be free. John Herr’s Village Market is donating hot dogs, and Synder Funeral Home will provide water.

Local emergency responders, Millersville VFW Post 7294, and Millersville University are just a few of the local organizations that will participate.

Passports Transport Holders Back in Time

To truly discover Lancaster is to uncover its history. To truly discover who we are, we must understand our origins.

A destination marketing organization, Discover Lancaster has come up with a unique way to explore a shared past and celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday.

“We want to expand people’s horizons,” said Joel Cliff, who’s been Discover Lancaster’s director of communications for 18 years. “The passport helps to expand people’s horizons. We want people to realize there are a lot of different angles to our heritage. The passports have locations throughout the county. They might be places people may not have heard of or explored before.”

This passport to which Cliff is referring isn’t used as identification for foreign travel. Instead, it is a passport to local Lancaster County history.

Those are some of the hallmarks of the Gap Relief Sale.

The 78th anniversary of the event will be held Friday, Aug. 7, and Saturday, Aug. 8, at the Solanco Fairgrounds, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville.

All proceeds will benefit the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC).

Auction items will include farm equipment, a vinyl swing set, an Amish spring wagon, a couple sheds, quilts, a hunting blind, tools, household goods, and furniture.

The event will start with an eat-in or takeout pork roast dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. on Aug. 7. From 4 to 6 p.m. there will be a preview of items up for bid the next

“Physically, the passport is made of heavy material,” said Cliff, a resident of Manheim Township. “It’s something that’s going to be a keepsake if someone is inclined. It’s a neat way to commemorate how you celebrated this special year.”

“There are so many great historical stories we wanted to share with locals and visitors,” Cliff continued. “The history and heritage aspect we offer is

certainly significant. We’re well-known for the Amish community. History and heritage are often referenced by our visitors as reasons for coming here. With the country’s 250th birthday, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to highlight that.”

An advocate for tourism, Discover Lancaster was formed from the Pennsylvania Dutch Convention and Business Bureau in 2015. Discover Lancaster, which receives 80 percent of its funding from Lancaster County’s hotel tax, employs 14 full-time staff members and eight parttime travel consultants.

“Tourism represents a sizeable part of our overall economy,” said Cliff. “It helps provide jobs, tax revenues and economic growth. Locals can enjoy some of these experiences right in their own backyards. There are benefits to having a robust tourism industry. All in all, the passport is really cool. It’s a great way to spend time.”

It’s basically our police department page. There’s a Millersville Borough web page, but there is not a separate Millersville Borough Police Department page. CRIMEWATCH is a solution to that that we’ve had and a lot of the other departments around us have CRIMEWATCH. We created a webpage for the police department at a low cost, and it allows us to advertise events and notify the public of safety issues. It’s not just posting of our arrests

that have been made. … People say police departments need to be transparent. That’s the whole purpose. People can see what the police department is doing on a daily basis.”

The chief stated that National Night Out is especially meaningful in small communities.

“People can even walk to the event from the streets surrounding us right here,” said Margevich. “You only have a 2-squaremile borough, so if people just want to get out of the house that night, they can take a walk up the street and go check it out. That’s unique.”

Lyons added, “It brings us together as a community, and also it’s kind of like a reunion for people. I’ve seen people that I haven’t seen since my kids graduated from high school. We get some engagement with the police department. We just want interaction back and forth and engagement.”

CHS Opens New Location

Catherine Hershey Schools for Early Learning (CHS), a subsidiary of Milton Hershey School (MHS), recently celebrated the grand opening of CHS New Danville, marking the organization’s first early childhood education center in Lancaster County and the fourth of six initially planned locations in Pennsylvania.

Regional leaders, supporters, CHS staff members, and community partners gathered at the new center, located at 393 Long Lane in Pequea Township, for a ribbon-cutting ceremony and facility tours. Remarks were delivered by MHS and CHS president Peter G. Gurt, CHS interim executive director Brittany Tomaso, and CHS New Danville center director Jessica Bailey.

occupies the former Lancaster Mennonite School campus, a site that has served children and families in Lancaster County for generations. Thoughtfully renovated for its new purpose, the facility includes state-of-the-art classrooms, an Innovation Studio, a Family Success Center, and more than 13,000 square feet of outdoor play space.

The CHS program is centered on a play-based curriculum that promotes children’s social, emotional, and cognitive development. Through a partnership with Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, enrolled children have access to health services, in addition to physical therapy, occupational and speech therapy, behavioral health support, nutritious meals, and personal care items.

The 28,000-square-foot center will serve 100 children from six weeks to age 5 from under-resourced and overburdened backgrounds, with all costs covered for qualifying families. The center is enrolled to capacity upon opening, primarily serving families who reside, work, or attend school within the Penn Manor, Solanco, and LampeterStrasburg school districts. CHS will work closely with these local districts to ensure continuity of support for children and families while investing in the long-term success of the surrounding communities.

CHS families partner with the Family Success Team in their center for goal setting, home visits, and connections to community resources.

CHS New Danville employs up to 60 teachers and staff members and operates year-round from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Mondays through Fridays. Since opening its first center in Hershey in 2023, CHS has expanded to four locations serving children and families across central Pennsylvania. The next planned Lancaster County locations include CHS Elizabethtown and CHS Lancaster City.

CAP Members Attend Training Programs

Members of the Lancaster Jesse Jones Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) recently spent a week at the Pennsylvania Wing’s Cadet Training Schools, either continuing their cadet development through hands-on learning and leadership training or by serving on staff. The program concluded with a formal graduation ceremony on June 28.

The Pennsylvania Wing of CAP holds an annual weeklong summer encampment at Fort Indiantown Gap. It includes Basic Encampment, a Leadership Development Course, a STEM Academy, and the Color Guard Academy.

This year’s Basic Encampment program included drill training, warrior knowledge, sports, relay races, physical training,

obstacle courses, and aerospace activities. During this process, the cadets learned how to work in a team, built camaraderie, gained independence, and made memories.

STEM Academy cadets built solar-powered robots, soldered electronic kits, and explored digital forensics. They also participated in trips, including a tour of the Penn State Breazeale Reactor, a trip to Bloomsburg to learn about aerospace engineering, and a visit to the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center.

Those participating in the Leadership Development Course experienced public speaking, leadership reaction challenges, rappelling from a 200-foot tower, leading drill, learning about different leadership styles, and flying

in a UH-60 Black Hawk.

The Color Guard Academy cadets not only trained on flag opening ceremonies, but they also took part in the Battle of the Bulge wreath-laying event and presented the colors at a Stormers baseball game.

Promise Players Post Auditions

The Promise Players will hold auditions for the group’s fall play, “See You in Bells,” on Sunday, Aug. 23. Auditions will be held between 1 and 6 p.m. at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster. The play will be performed from Thursday to Sunday, Nov. 5 to 8, and Thursday to Sunday, Nov. 12 to 15.

“See You in Bells” is a comedy centered on a wedding that faces numerous obstacles, including three generations of weddings with inexplicable disasters, a church building that is falling down, half the wedding party missing, and the

bride’s sisters still fighting over what happened at the last wedding. But the bride’s brother is determined to end the sisters’ feud and the family curse.

Roles are available for 16 actors: six males, six females, two teen girls, one teen boy, and a good-natured minister. Those auditioning should come prepared to read from the script, and they may arrive early to complete the audition form and look over the script selections.

A Mennonite youth choir will perform after the auction, sandwiched around a presentation by Clair Good, the Mennonite Central Committee’s Plain community liaison. Good will talk about the beneficiary of this year’s sale, the approximately 500,000 refugees in western Ethiopia coming out of the civil war in South Sudan. “Many of them are struggling because much of the international food or international aid in the forms of food has been cut off,” said Good.

A country breakfast at 6 a.m. will start the festivities on Aug. 8. Household items will be up for bid at 8:30 a.m., followed by farm items and shop tools at 9 a.m., outdoor

items and shrubbery at 10:30 a.m., and large outdoor items at 1 p.m. Doughnuts, ice cream, milkshakes, french fries, and soft pretzels will also be sold throughout the event.

“The Mennonite Central Committee works globally at relief and development, food security, education, and peace building in areas of war,” said Good.

The Gap Relief Sale plays an integral role in those efforts. “That helps us to get funds together to send to MCC,” said Levi Glick. “I think that’s the biggest reason. There are lots of people there. You meet people that you may only meet there every year. There’s a lot of fellowshipping going on as well. It’s about getting together for a day of doing good.”

Conflict Resolution Program Set

Advoz will offer a Restorative Practices Toolkit Training from Monday to Wednesday, Aug. 17 to 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Millersville University. The campus is centered around George and Frederick streets in Millersville. People may choose to attend one or more days of the training.

The program is intended to help people build practical skills for interpersonal and group collaboration and restorative conflict resolution. Topics will include conflict awareness, listening-based communication, cultural considerations, de-escalating high conflict and engaging in proactive affective communication, and facilitating the group-building Circle Process.

Good said last year the MCC collected 280,000 cans of meat. “Not just the meat is important, but getting it through customs and so forth, and then working at distribution as well,” he said. “Sixteen percent of the children in that camp are under 5 years of age, and 16% of them are malnourished. … It’s devastating, but the impact of what MCC’s doing with that community is very, very positive, and we’ve been thankful that we can engage and be effective there.”

Pequea Township Plans National Night Out Event

The Pequea Township Police Department invites residents of all ages to attend the 2026 Pequea Township National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the West Willow Fire Company, 192 W. Willow Road, Willow Street.

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes strong partnerships between law enforcement,

first responders, community organizations, and the neighborhoods they serve.

The event provides an opportunity for residents to meet the officers who patrol their community, learn about local public safety resources, and enjoy an evening of family-friendly activities.

The free event will feature police vehicles and equipment displays; emergency response appa-

ratus; children’s activities; community organization exhibits; safety information; food and refreshments; and opportunities to interact with local police officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, and other public safety partners.

Admission is free, and the event is open to all residents of Pequea Township and the surrounding communities.
