July Is Disability Pride Month

More than one in four U.S. adults have a disability. That is why July is Disability Pride Month.

While it is not a nationally recognized event, Disability Pride parades and events have been recognized since 1990, commemorating the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), signed into law by President George H.W. Bush on July 26 of the same year.

At Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development’s Circle of Friends Academy, inclusivity is at the forefront.

At the academy, an earlylearning child care center, children with disabilities are not separated from neurotypical kids, something that Penn Manor School District resident Maria Steele loves. Steele, who is a parent to two children at the academy, also works as a

Historic Rock Ford will host a Social Dance event Sunday, July 26, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Langmuir Education Room located on the first floor of the Rock Ford Barn, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster.

Attendees are advised to wear clothes people can dance and move around in and flat-soled shoes that won’t stick or skid on the concrete floor, Historic Rock Ford executive director Christina McSherry said. People are not required to bring a dance partner.

Visitors should bring water. The activity is recommended for peoples age 7 and up. There will be a nominal fee for nonmembers age 12 and up.

The Rock Ford dancers will perform on the porch of the Hand Mansion at 1 p.m.

“We started social dances last year because there was so much interest in our historic dance group,” said McSherry. “People were always asking, ‘Is there a place I can learn this? I’d love to try it.’ The historic dance group requires a pretty extensive commitment to practicing and getting a costume, so we were starting to think (that this) is a good way to have people try out English country dance, which is the type of dancing that the Hand family would have done.”

country dance is a centuries-old form of dance. It is still really popular worldwide. There’s modern English country dance, groups that do new dances and things, but traditionally, it’s the type of dancing you see, for example, in a Jane Austen movie where men are lined up on one side, ladies on the other. We don’t care about that at our social dance just as long as there’s two lines, but traditionally, that’s how it would be done. And then you’re dancing with the other couples, moving up or down the line.”

Historic Rock Ford held its first social dance last year and has two more scheduled in 2026. “(The social dances are) a potential way to recruit people for the historic dance group if people really enjoy it,” said McSherry. “We came up with the idea of social

dance, which is a type of program that many different organizations do. They do it for different types of dances. There’s a very strong English country dance, social dance community around the country. We tapped into that network to try to start our own program, and it was very successful last year. … It’s been a really fun time,” said McSherry. “It’s been a great success. We get people of all

ages, from young kids.”

All of the dances are taught. “You don’t have to have any experience,” McSherry said. “People explain how it works, and you get to walk through it a few times before we try it with music. There’s a nice mix also of experienced and not experienced, so, if you have questions, someone around you can also help.”

The dances that will be performed originated from

music in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. “Some of those dances are much older,” said McSherry. “They just do new movements to them, new choreography to them. They get updated, but the tunes themselves are pretty old. It’s a fun chance to come and try something new, something maybe you’ve been curious about, whether you’ve seen it in films or on different TV shows.”

Resource Sharing App Launched

A new resource called the Lancaster County Food Exchange is available to help food banks, pantries, and community organizations share resources,

reduce waste, and get food to families in need. The organization’s purpose is to “make sure no good food goes unused and no family goes hungry.”

Terry Kile had the idea for the food exchange when The Loft Community Partnership in Millersville received an overage of 4,800 clamshells of blueberries. Kile, a local tech entrepreneur, created the Lancaster County Food Exchange mobile web application using coding and some artificial intel -

ligence. Incorporated as Food Exchange Resources in June 2025 and certified as a 501(c)(3) organization by the Internal Revenue Service, the Lancaster County Food Exchange was beta-tested by several food pantry directors and employees prior to its launch on Jan. 15.

The Lancaster County Food Exchange aims to help stretch limited resources further and strengthen collaboration among food assistance providers countywide. The mobile app allows

registered food pantry volunteers to list surplus inventory directly from a smartphone, request needed items from partner organizations across Lancaster County, coordinate pickups and deliveries, and view real-time shared inventory for better planning and distribution. Needs may include food and personal care products. As of May 5, the Lancaster County Food Exchange served 32 local agencies and more than 80 volunteers.

Future plans include expanding partnerships with growers, manufacturers, and distributors; integrating additional features for reporting and logistics; and onboarding more community groups that serve local families.

Initial support organizations included Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Midwest Food Bank, and Community Action Partnership of Lancaster County (CAP of Lancaster County). Foundation Receives Funding to Expand Program

Touchstone Foundation has been awarded $255,766 through the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) Violence Intervention and Prevention (VIP) grant program to support the expansion and strengthening of its Rise Above program.

Launched in 2022, Rise Above was created to help eliminate stigma surrounding youth mental wellness while empowering young people with tools for resilience, self-awareness, and advocacy. The program brings mental wellness programming and youth mentorship to Lancaster County schools for students in grades seven through 12 as well as to young adults ages 18 to 26 in community groups.

The program seeks to create inclusive spaces that foster belonging, reduce stigma, and encourage open conversations about mental health. One of its goals is to reduce long-term risk factors associated with trauma and mental health challenges. Through creative expression and guided conversations, students may build emotional awareness, develop coping

United Way Awards Grants

United Way of Lancaster County and Lancaster Rotary Club have announced that $80,000 in Summer Youth Experience Grants has been distributed to support organizations providing enriching summer learning opportunities for youths ages 5 to 17 in the School District of Lancaster.

Through this partnership, Lancaster Rotary contributed $45,000 and United Way of Lancaster County contributed $35,000 to help ensure local children and teens have access to safe, engaging, and educational summer programming. These investments support programs that help students continue learning, build confidence, explore new interests, and stay connected during the summer months.

United Way of Lancaster County has also awarded $12,000 in Kellogg’s Summer Hunger funding to support local organizations addressing food insecurity for children and families during the summer months.

Through the recent competitive award, Rise Above will expand its reach significantly, with a goal of serving 1,120 Lancaster County students and young adults by 2029.

With support in 2024 from the Lancaster County Community Foundation’s $35,000 Shaping Tomorrow Next Generation Grant, part of a broader $1 million investment into Lancaster County initiatives, Touchstone Foundation is expanding Rise Above into Lancaster County schools through school-day workshops, after-school programming, summer intensives, and community-based groups for young adults. Additional support for Rise Above was also received in 2025 from the City Limits Foundation, helping strengthen the program’s long-term impact and reach.

With the new VIP grant funding, Touchstone Foundation is expanding Rise Above into Lancaster County schools, serving students in grades seven through 12 during the

school day and through after-school programming. The expansion also includes new opportunities for young adults through community-based groups, extending support beyond high school.

A key component of the expansion is the development of a Safe Space Facilitator training program. This initiative will equip mental health professionals, artists, and community members - as well as Rise Above graduates - with the tools to serve as mentors. Training includes Youth Mental Health First Aid, trauma-informed care, and child abuse prevention and reporting.

The program expansion has also received recognition and support from Pennsylvania leaders and community partners who continue to advocate for youth mental wellness, violence prevention, and mentorship initiatives across the commonwealth.

As community hosts in partnership with Weave: The Social Fabric Project at the Aspen Institute, the Lancaster County Community Foundation and Lancaster County Local Journalism Fund are launching a four-year effort to find, support, and celebrate everyday neighbors who are building trust, nurturing belonging, and weaving the social fabric in the community. Through this year’s Weaver Awards, 20 local individuals or small organizations will be selected to receive $2,500 each to support their work fostering connection in Lancaster County. The Weaver Awards are a way the community can amplify and support the everyday people in local neighborhoods, schools, places of worship, and jobs who are weaving threads of connection through the community.

Nominations are open, and nominees must be residents of Lancaster County who are age 18 and older. While many people in Lancaster County are

serving their neighbors, the Weaver Awards are intended for those whose projects also create lasting relationships and build trust as people work together to strengthen their community and weave a tighter social fabric.

People may apply for an award themselves or recommend a neighbor at www.weavelancastercounty .org. The application is intentionally simple, asking questions about the people involved, their project, and their community. Local nonprofit organizations with an operating budget less than $250,000 are also encouraged to apply. Nominations will close on Friday, July 24. She’s Somebody’s Daughter was doing things other people weren’t doing. You’re taking the strengths of both organizations and putting them together.”

More than simply a merger, Hope Inspire Love and She’s Somebody’s Daughter recently joined forces, pooled resources and intertwined missions all in the name of fighting human trafficking and sexual exploitation. The names have remained the same under the umbrella of a single nonprofit. Hope Inspire Love will serve as the lead organization, and the Lemoyne-based She’s Somebody’s Daughter will perform outreach services.

“This was just a beautiful next step,” said Amy. “This allows us to better impact and really help survivors in our region. It’s a natural alignment in the right direction. It’s not a mission drift; it’s a mission realignment. We don’t ever want there to be barriers for Hope Inspire Love. This was an easy ‘yes.’ There was no pause or reservations.”

The consolidation allows the two nonprofits to work as one and to provide better services and reach more victims and potential victims of human trafficking in Lancaster, Dauphin, Franklin, Lebanon, York, Berks, Cumberland, Adams, Perry, Montgomery and Lehigh counties. Operating under the tagline “Better Together, Stronger Together,” Hope Inspire Love, which is headquartered at 1380 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, now also operates offices in Lemoyne and Chambersburg.

Under details of the merger, every former staff member of She’s Somebody’s Daughter was retained by the new organization.

“This partnership is a bold investment in the future of survivors and our community,” said Rosemarie Davis, executive director of She’s Somebody’s Daughter. “The exponential power of partnership with Hope Inspire Love enables us to support and

expand our mission to women exploited in the commercial sex industry.”

“She’s Somebody’s Daughter’s mission is going out and meeting individuals in dark places and meeting the needs, instead of waiting for people to be referred to them,” said Amy, who will remain in her role as CEO of Hope Inspire Love. “They’re going into that moment and into vulnerable situations like massage businesses, strip clubs, motels and prisons.

We’re there for long-term support.

“We’ve been working together for years,” added Amy. “(She’s Somebody’s Daughter was) looking at where they were going in the future. We were working with them like, ‘What do you need?’”

Ultimately, it was a conversation at a conference between Thurston and She’s Somebody’s Daughter officials that got the ball rolling toward a merger. Thurston took the idea to Hope Inspire Love’s board of directors in January of 2025, and by the fall of that year, the proper documentation was submitted to the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s office.

“We made sure this was truly a great fit,” said Amy. “It’s not just two organizations joining names. It’s a collective force for good in our community. We have to be willing to consider what’s best for the people we serve. Neither organization was looking for this, but this came about. We didn’t force it. It was meant to be.”

Amy and Steve Thurston founded Hope Inspire Love in the basement of their home in 2017. The organization has performed a wealth of good in those short years since.

“It started as a dream of something we had to do,” said Amy. “It started with awareness and education. We have expanded our services, and now we have over 100 volunteers giving back. If you look at the years that have passed, we’ve been able to put together a strong team that supports the mission and community.”

“Summertime Classics” Concert Set

First Reformed Church, 40 E. Orange St., Lancaster, will present a concert, “Summertime Classics,” on First Friday, Aug. 7, at 8 p.m. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. The 30-minute program will feature organist Larry Hershey.

The concert will include George Gershwin’s “Summertime” from “Porgy and Bess,” “The Washington Post” by John Philip Sousa, and Camille Saint-Saëns’ “The Swan.” The program will conclude with “Evening Harmonies” by Sigfrid Karg-Elert and “Alla Hornpipe” from George Frideric Handel’s “Water Music” suite.

“It’s a really cool experience to be able to watch the neurotypical kids interact with these kids with disabilities,” said Steele. “My oldest daughter, who’s in the preschool class, they’re her friends. She doesn’t see them as any different because she’s so exposed.”

Stephanie and Nate, of Lancaster, parent 2-yearold Maverick at the academy. Maverick, an autistic child, receives speech therapy services at Schreiber.

“I wanted him somewhere that would have atypical children and neurotypical children,” Stephanie said. “I really, really like that they have mixed classrooms.”

Both families expressed how important early exposure and familiarity is to inclusivity later in life, especially when children get into grade school.

“I think it’s good for him,” Nate said. “Schreiber’s has been really good with (Maverick). ... Him being around other kiddos is really bringing out more and more stuff that we wouldn’t see from him going to the other day care he went to before that.”

The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development was founded in 1936 in response to the polio epi -

demic. Now serving over 2,000 children every year, the center is the region’s only pediatric provider that offers a continuum of care under one roof, according to its website.

“We have speech therapy, occupational therapy and physical therapy,” said Lexi Cahill, the center’s marketing and communications manager. “Those kids range from children with physical disabilities to kids that come in with acquired injuries - maybe they’ve been in a car accident or something similar.”

The Circle of Friends Academy enrolls kids from six weeks up to five years, many of which are developing children with disabilities. The academy has three classrooms, an infant classroom (six weeks to two years), a toddler classroom (two years to three years) and a preschool classroom (three years to five years). It is a full day care program with therapy services as needed.

Last year, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro issued a proclamation recognizing Disability Pride Month in July. Disability pride parades are held annually in both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh during the month of July.

There is a disability pride flag, created by Ann Magill, a writer with cerebral palsy.
