Children Graduate From Program Pohlkotte, Mila Saenz, Ni’ara Scott, and Sami Snyder. More than 230 children have received services through the center since its opening in 2002. Heather Brown, director of the center, introduced Faith Irwin, a former student of the program, to address the graduates. Irwin, who attended the center from 2007 to 2010, is now set to graduate from Millersville University in December. She shared strategies with the graduates on how to overcome struggles associated with dyslexia and some of the strategies she has utilized to help her be successful. Each graduate was given an autograph bear, the mascot adopted by the Children’s Dyslexia Centers Inc., as a keepsake. FFA Members Win Top Honors In State Competition hree teams of Manor FFA members placed first or second in the recent Pennsylvania FFA Convention and Activities Week, held June 7 through 9 at Penn State University. The teams, all consisting of Penn Manor High School agricultural

education students, participated in career development events (CDEs), competing against other teams from across the state in contests that evaluate skills in specific agricultural areas. The floriculture team of Carly Railing, Leah Hess, Molly Gehr and

Vita Failla placed first in the state. Carly was the first-place individual in the state, and Jeanette Kneisley placed second. Olivia Malpica also participated in the competition. The team will now move on to compete at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis in October.

The center generally has a waitlist of about 20 children, and it usually takes one to two years before an opening is available. The center also offers free training for adults to receive certification as dyslexia practitioners. Fundraising efforts currently include the annual W. Scott Stoner Memorial Children’s Dyslexia Center Walk in September and the Extraordinary Give in November, along with a few other newer, smaller fundraisers. The center is hoping to ex pand its fundraising efforts in order to accommodate the increasing number of children who have a need. The center, sponsored by the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Masons, is one of six such centers in Pennsylvania providing tutoring at no charge to children from elementary through high school who fit a dyslexic profile. Children are eligible regardless of economic status or Masonic affiliation. The Orton-Gillingham approach is used as the basis for tutoring and tutor training. This method is a sequential, multisensory, phonetic approach to language. Last year, the center enrolled about 25 children, which was fewer than in previous years due to a lack of staffing and funding. “It’s been challenging raising funds since before COVID,” said Brown. The center operates on a small budget that is sustained primarily through local fundraising efforts undertaken by the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection and the Board of Governors that oversees the program. “It costs over $6,000 annu-

Penn Manor Team Named Softball Champion

Britain Hill Venue & Vineyard, 790 Little Britain Road North, Quarryville, will present its second annual Southern End Love Community event on Saturday, July 16, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event, which will benefit the first responders of southern Lancaster County, will feature local vendors, games, prizes, food trucks and live music. The highlight of the day will be an opportunity for community members to meet local first responders and check out their police cars, firetrucks and emergency vehicles. Micillicutty the police mini pony will also be in attendance, and first responders will offer demonstrations and games as well. Local shopping vendors will be set up inside the venue, and attendees will have an opportunity to win gift baskets. All proceeds will benefit local first responders, including the Quarryville Fire Company, the Robert Fulton Fire Company, Wakefield EMS, the Pennsylvania State Police and the Quarryville Police Foundation, which consists of a group of community members who fundraise for the Quarryville Police Department’s training and equipment. Aaron’s Acres from pg 1 simply asked the nurse to take photos. Staff and campers worked together to create a memory book for each child to take home. “Once we got big (serving more than 200 campers), the nurse didn’t have the time (to take photos),” recalled Paskoff. Instead, Paskoff turned to community members and asked them to help. “We want the community to see our kids,” said Paskoff. “A lot of people think kids with disabilities are really limited, so we bring them here so they can see (our campers), and it changes their perspective. They say, ‘I didn’t expect (campers) to get in the water or on the horses.’” In the summer of 2019, more than 100 community volunteers visited during the six weeks of camp to take photos. On June 21, three Fulton Bank employees joined Paskoff and more than 90 campers at Aaron’s Acres’ location at the New Holland Community Memorial Park. Jess Marzella, who works with the Small Business Administration in Pottstown, and Trish Mountain and Melissa Schaeffer, who work at the Penn Square Fulton location in Lancaster, all donated their time to take photos of the campers. The three women had responded to an email from Fulton coordinator Karen Landis. Marzella has a

daughter with special needs, and she has been volunteering with the Best Buddies program at her daughter’s school for several years. Her sensitivity in this area led her to volunteer. Mountain, who lives in Mountville, said that she has volunteered with Aaron’s Acres for three years and with the Special Olympics for several years. She noted that her career is in banking, but she has a degree in therapeutic recreation and she enjoys helping out. Schaeffer, of Washington Boro, had volunteered with Aaron’s Acres when the camp was in Manheim. She said that she had a niece with special needs who has passed away. “She was a delight in our lives,” she recalled, adding, “It’s amazing to watch these kids have such a great time with this experience.” Two days into camp at a new location in New Holland, Paskoff was pleased with the results of moving the six-week summer program. “Yesterday did not feel like the first day,” she said. “We are in our new location. Not one kid had a problem with the transition.” Paskoff noted that the recognizable yellow T-shirts of all camp staff members, the daily schedule, and the intentional routine of the camp days have helped to make the change to a new place easier.
