Act 34 Hearing Set For High School Project Penn Manor High School is slated to look quite different in a few years. The school was built in the 1950s and was partially renovated beginning in 1994. Ongoing deterioration and major component failures led to a school board vote in June 2016 to pursue an on-site renovation and construction project that is scheduled to begin next summer. A hearing in accordance with Pennsylvania’s Act 34 of 1973 - sometimes known as the “Taj Mahal Act” - will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, July 16, in the auditorium of Manor Middle School, 2950 Charlestown Road, Lancaster. The public meeting will include a description of the proposed renovations and construction, along with presentations on the educational, physical, administrative, budgetary, and fiscal aspects of the project. Members of the public will have the opportunity to comment on the project.
The proposed improvements include upgrades to the high school’s HVAC, plumbing, electrical, fire suppression, technology, and security systems, along with the replacement of major sections of the school. A new athletic wing is planned, along with a 900-seat auditorium and band, chorus, orchestra, and ensemble rooms. In May, the Lancaster Public Library received $3,500 in grant funding to support summer literacy. The library is the recipient of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation Summer Reading grant ($2,000), as well as the Rotary Summer Youth Experience 2018 grant ($1,500), administered by the United Way of Lancaster County. The income will fund the Ticket 2 Read initiative. Ticket 2 Read is a summer reading enrichment program for children in kindergarten through fifth grade to enhance literacy skills by introducing children to books and educational content during their summer break. Children from urban summer camps who visit the library on field trips will be introduced to themed weeks of literacy activities facilitated by a professional librarian. The desired outcome
Manor Middle School seventh-grader Nicole Chen recently placed first in Pennsylvania in a piano competition sponsored by the Pennsylvania Federation of Music Clubs. Nicole placed first in the Moderately Difficult Level III category for her performance of “Lofty Peaks” by John Thompson. The competition was held on May 21 in Mars.
Seniors Group To Meet The Millersville-Manor Seniors will hold a luncheon on Monday, July 23, at the Millersville VFW, 219 Walnut Hill Road. The meeting will begin at noon with a luncheon. Anyone over age 55 is welcome to attend. Entertainment will be by Chris Proje Entertainment, New York style.

YWCA of Lancaster will offer Racial Justice Institute Part II from July 18 to 20 at Lancaster Theological Seminary. facilitators who have delivered the Institute to the Lancaster community for more than 20 years. Due to the intensity and the pace of the institutes, interested participants are highly encouraged to have had prior conversations and experiences regarding oppression and racism. YWCA Lancaster and the Lancaster Theological Seminary have developed this program to
equip participants with a newfound understanding of the life experiences of people of color and white people. Participants will be introduced to an antiracist and multicultural analysis model and will leave the institute with a tangible plan of action for themselves and their change team. The Mayor’s Commission to Combat Poverty’s One Good Job strategic plan to cut poverty in half in Lancaster City by 2032 cites a Franklin & Marshall College report that notes that there are “about 1,000 single, working women raising families and living in poverty.� According to the plan, connecting these women to full-time employment at sustainable wages would reduce poverty in Lancaster City by 20 to 25 percent. To that end, the Community Action Partnership (CAP) will kick off a public relations and action campaign designed to encourage women to consider new or different possibilities when thinking about their careers. The campaign, under the working title “We Can Do It,� will kick off this fall with digital advertisements encouraging women working in jobs with low wages or low advancement potential to see possibility in non-traditional career fields with a need for employees, such as welding, construction, and machining. The campaign’s call-to-action will be to connect with a CAP Navigator to map out a training or employment plan with community partners and local employers. This Navigator will address all the barriers in their household, including but not limited to transportation and child care, and will walk with them on a journey towards bettering their financial standing for their family. To find the perfect song for this campaign that reflects the spirit and heart of the Lancaster community, CAP will host a songwriting competition with a prize of $1,000 and professional studio time for the songwriter/s to record their winning song. Up to three finalists, selected by a panel of CAP staff and community members, will perform their songs live at CAP’s Block Party on Thursday, Aug. 30, (or, if event is rained out, on Friday, Aug. 31). The deadline for submission is Tuesday, July 31. Rules and regulations, as well as suggestions on how to get started writing the perfect song, are available at www.caplanc.org.

The Central Penn Business Group on Health (CPBGH) will host a Data Reveal on Wednesday, July 18, from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Lancaster Chamber, 115 E. King St., Lancaster. For the past two years, the CPBGH has focused on creating a data cohort for health care data in the region. The goal was to give its members and the broader community an independent data set outlining health care costs and relevant metrics for the region that could be used to drive change. With data now available on more than 80,000 covered lives, CPBGH will host its first data reveal with a baseline analysis of its cohort.
The event will include short seminars on growing mushrooms at home, new perennials, container gardening, culinary herbs, butterfly gardening, tomatoes, flower arranging, and more. Visitors may enjoy the colors of Penn State’s flower trials through a specialized tour, as well as wagon tours of research trials throughout the farm. In addition to the research trials, SEAREC is home to a Master Gardener idea garden and a rain garden that are continually being updated. Guests will be welcome to stroll through both areas. The SGE will also feature a
caterpillar vivarium, ideas for children’s gardening, dyeing with vegetables, and booths to “ask the expert” or obtain general information. Food, milkshakes, and other beverages will be available for purchase during the event. Admission to all talks, tours, and demonstrations will be included with a per-vehicle parking fee, and preregistration is not required. Shaun W. Scott of Millersville won his seventh national grappling medal on April 27 in Las Vegas. Scott won third place at the 92-kilogram weight category in no-gi grappling at the USA Wrestling’s Grappling National Championships, which was also the World Team Trials Tournament. Scott also placed fourth in gi grappling at the 92-kilogram weight class. This was Scott’s 37th national medal. He had previously medaled in wrestling styles such as Greco-Roman, freestyle, combat, and belt, along with other grappling-type sports such as Sombo, judo, gi grappling, and no-gi grappling. Scott has now competed in 14 World Championship tournaments. He has competed for both the U.S. and U.S. Virgin Islands, being a multiple-time captain of the U.S. Team in both GrecoRoman and Sombo in international and world competitions. Scott wrestled in high school and at

Local Residents Make Dean’s List Two Lancaster residents were named to the dean’s list at Geneva College, Beaver Falls, for the spring 2018 semester. To be eligible for this recognition, students in traditional programs must earn a grade point average of at least 3.6 while passing 12 credit hours or more. The local students are Travis Eisenhauer and Andrea Hausman. Eisenhauer is earning a degree in computer science, and Hausman is majoring in middle school education.
Penn Manor Honors Retirees Penn Manor honored 18 retirees with nearly 450 years of combined service on May 2 during the 39th annual Employee Recognition Dinner in the high school cafeteria. Attendees watched a video presentation of comments and a song-and-dance number by 12 of the retirees - Jeff Roth, Marilyn Springer, Donna Brady, Anne Butterfield, Cheryl Dearolf, Frank Dell’Estate, Sue Frese, Shirley Jackson, Nancy Kaufhold, Peg Murr, Wayne Martin and Dave Bender. The other retirees were Karen Braun, CeCe O’Day, Dave Hoar, Faye Sangrey, Christine Pierce and Cheryl Drumm-Miklos. At the event, the school district
also honored 41 Penn Manor employees with 20 or more years of service and the Outstanding Employee and Educators of the Year. Cindy Bachman, high school athletics secretary, was named Outstanding Employee for 2017-18.
