Cars and Ice Cream Cones

There will be cars and cones, but not traffic cones.

The First Responders Friends offer a much tastier cone for its “Cars and Cones” events, a series of car shows and ice cream socials. The organization holds three such events every summer, the second of which is upcoming

on Friday, July 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Safe Harbor Park, 5365 River Road, Conestoga.

“I’ve heard of coffee and cars,” said Bob Heckrote, who is the secretary of First Responders Friends. “That’s a morning thing ... so we thought an evening cruise would be something different.”

There is no registration or signup prior to the event. As Heckrote put

it, there’s no commitment; it’s just a bunch of people coming out for ice cream to support a great cause. Participants must make a donation of a nominal set fee, which includes two bowls of ice cream and two bottles of water. People typically bring an antique or classic car, but any vehicle is permitted.

“There is no requirement,” Heckrote said. “We’ve gotten

everything from an antique fire truck to late model cars.”

Cookies and cream, chocolate, vanilla and mint chocolate chip ice cream flavors will be available. Visitors who do not bring a car are also welcome.

For two days each July, the “community” part of Washington Boro Community Park comes into the spotlight. The Washington Boro Tomato Festival will be held at the park, 2010 River Road, on Saturday, July 11, and on Saturday, July 18. Even after 90 years, the Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA) is as strong as ever.

The LCAA, the oldest art association in Lancaster County, celebrated its 90th birthday at its annual banquet at the DoubleTree Resort in Lancaster in May. The banquet’s keynote speaker was artist Richard Ressel, who shared many of his memories from over the years. He also honored Ken Hoak, an LCAA member since

of about 50 cars, said Rich Graham, the group’s president. Graham also gave a nod to Brookfield Renewable Energy Group, the group that owns the Safe Harbor Dam. Brookfield provides electricity and ice for the event, as well as the location.

The third Cars and Cones event will be held on Friday, Aug. 21, also from 6 to 8 p.m. The series ramps up to the group’s biggest activity, the annual Conestoga Classic Car Show. The 13th edition will be held on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration will be required for that event; people can sign up starting in July.

First Responders Friends supports the Conestoga Volunteer Fire Company, West Willow Fire Company, Lancaster EMS, and Pequea Township Police Department.

Meetings are held at Graham’s home in Conestoga, typically on the first Thursday of every month, although the group is flexible. Call Graham at 717-917-6500 for more

First Responders Friends was founded approximately 15 years ago, and Graham joined shortly thereafter. It was originally Friends of Southern Regional Police before the name changed after there was no longer a regional police force.

First Responders Friends either fulfills specific requests or makes monetary donations. The group has purchased flashlights and a sign that indicates a vehicle’s speed for the police department and even bought a police car soon after the organization was founded.

The group hands out candy on Halloween and supports the Pequea Township and Conestoga Township National Night Out events.

“It all benefits local fire companies and first responders,” Graham said. “We’ve got a good group of guys, we really do. I don’t know if we’ve ever had a vote that we haven’t split on ... we’ve got some ladies, too.”

Community Band to Present Concert

The Twin Rose Community Band will play a free concert on the lawn at the Mountville Church of the Brethren, 60 Clay St., Mountville, on Sunday, July 12, at 7 p.m.

The band will play music from a variety of genres,

including traditional marches, classic rock, and sing-alongs.

Attendees should bring lawn chairs. In the event of rain, the concert will be moved indoors. Donations will be accepted to support the band.

Trivia Event

Planned

The Moravian Center of Lancaster will present a trivia contest on Saturday, July 11, from 4 to 6 p.m. on the second floor of 227 N. Queen St., Lancaster.

Featured trivia questions will be about music and artists from the ‘50s through the ‘80s.

The event is free, with prizes awarded to the first-, second-, and third-place winners. Doors will open at 3 p.m. with snacks available for sale.

Faith-Based Soccer Program Planned for Children

Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) of Lancaster County will offer a new Soccer Party Club to celebrate the World Cup coming to Philadelphia.

Soccer Party Club is a 90-minute program that meets for one day. It is free for children ages 5 to 12 and will be held at various locations throughout Lancaster County. The program includes soccer-themed games, a verse, songs, and a lesson. All workers are screened as required by the Child Evangelism Fellowship Child Protection Policy.

Children may play soccerthemed games during Soccer Party Club, offered through CEF of Lancaster County.

“(Richard) gave a wonderful view, just the little tidbits that he knew from the art association, things and memories that would be meaningful to members,” said Patricia Keller of Landisville, a 40-year LCAA member who handles the association’s publicity and advertising.

Formed in 1936 by Mary Black Diller and Grace Steinmetz, the LCAA began house tours around the county in 1949, with proceeds earmarked for a permanent location. That would come in 1954, when the association moved into 22 E. Vine St., Lancaster, a building that once belonged to the plumbers’ union.

The Vine Street location would serve as the association’s home for more than 30 years until 1998, when it moved to its present location of 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg. That building consists of multiple galleries, a board room, a classroom and a pottery room.

Today, the LCAA rosters 245 members who come

from all over the area, not just Lancaster County.

Within those members are professional artists who make a living off their craft, as well as amateurs who are just getting into art.

“It’s amazing the number of people we have from Marietta, up in Ephrata, down in Quarryville, even from Chester County,” Keller said. “It’s a place, probably one of the few places where nonprofessional artists can mingle with professional artists and have their work displayed and shown. ... It’s a real nice venue for them to be able to exhibit their work, and then it just encourages them to paint more and to do more things.”

The anniversary is also a time of change for the association. At the banquet, president Carol Dale stepped down from her position. She was the longest serving president in LCAA history, guiding it through a period of uncertainty with the COVID-19 pandemic.

“She’s done a wonderful job,” Keller said of Dale. “We’re very pleased that we have someone that’s very qualified to take over her place. It’s a big responsibility.”

Throughout the year, the LCAA offers classes in drawing, watercolor, pottery, jewelry making, sketching and pastels. The classes, geared toward both children and adults, are offered at various times of the day and days of the week, leaving a window for everybody to participate.

The association’s members will have a “Decades” show at the Lancaster Art Vault in July, located on the first floor at 100 N. Queen St., Lancaster. The show commemorates the organization’s history and anniversary.

On the homefront in Strasburg, the LCAA opened a “Summer Media

Wars” show on June 28 that will progress every three weeks, with new artwork added. Attendees will vote to decide which media wins the challenge.

“I just wish (people) would come down and see our gallery, because we have a lot of beautiful artwork,” Keller said. “I find that today, we’re sort of starting to lose a little bit of appreciation for things that people have done themselves.”

A Decade of Wagging Tails

“We have been open for 10 years, yet we seem to be one of Mount Joy’s best kept secrets,” said Lynn McCleary, president and co-founder of Dog Park Mount Joy (DPMJ). “For 10 years, Dog Park Mount Joy has offered more than a doggie playground. It is a place where dogs gain confidence and shed stress, where members become confidants of one another, where families share the joy of happy dogs running and wrestling and where a stronger community grows, one wagging tail at a time.”

As the park marks a decade of operation, the organization will hold several fundraisers to support its mission.

“Although there is an annual membership fee to join Dog Park Mount Joy, landscaping alone costs more than $10,000 a year, and fundraisers help cover upkeep and improvement costs,” McCleary explained.

Pack the Pub! will be held on Wednesday, July 8, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. at McCleary’s Pub, 130 W. Front St., Marietta. Diners should inform their server that they are supporting Dog

Park Mount Joy, and the organization will receive 10% of each check.

“We are grateful to the McCleary’s team for this generous opportunity, and we hope to bring them many satisfied customers, old and new,” McCleary said. “This is an Open Mike Jam night, with the house band opening and other musicians showing off their musical stuff. Dogs are not invited, but they will enjoy leftovers.”

On Saturday, July 18, a bake sale to benefit the dog park will be held at JB Hostetter & Sons, 1225 W. Main St., Mount Joy, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“Grillmaster Don Farr will be slinging hot dogs and sausage sandwiches, and the dog park community will provide a myriad of tasty treats for both humans and pups,” McCleary said. “For safety reasons, pups are not invited to this event.”

A chicken barbecue, featuring Peters’ BBQ, will be held on Saturday, Aug. 1, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at DPMJ, adjacent to Rapho Township Community Park, 960 Strickler Road, Mount Joy. Advance tickets may be ordered by calling Gail at 717-538-0810.

To wrap up its fundraising efforts, a 10th anniversary Halloween celebration will be held on Saturday, Oct. 24. Details, including the event’s timing, are still being finalized.

“We are celebrating this milestone throughout the year, culminating in this festival, featuring dog-related vendors, food, music and our annual pet costume parade,” McCleary stated.

McCleary reflected

on the dog park’s 10th anniversary, adding, “I attribute the dog park’s longevity to the heartfelt commitment of 20 people who decided that their best friends deserved a place to run free and socialize with other dogs. We knew that if we didn’t make this dream a reality, it would never happen.”

The group searched for a workable site, attended Rapho Township meetings, created a plan requiring members to pay annual dues and avoid a taxpayer burden and formed a 501(c)(3) organization.

“We collaborated with the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to form an ideal public/private partnership model and received a $60,000 grant for the project,” McCleary explained. “We tapped into a communitywide need that transcends any and all other differences we may have. The common thread among dog lovers is their deep love for their pups and joy at finding a place where they can play together and meet friends.”

She credits a team of ded-

icated people with making the dog park a reality, including Dr. Carla Douple of Landisville Animal Hospital, who co-founded the space, and Gail Fridy, who McCleary calls the “Fundraising Ninja.”

“(Gail) doesn’t even own a dog, yet her commitment to the cause is a primary reason DPMJ has a success story to tell,” McCleary said.

DPMJ members come from the local community and as far away as Elizabethtown, Manheim, Lancaster, Millersville, Mountville, Lebanon and Hershey. Several members live in other states and visit on occasion.

“The park has a two-acre section for large dogs and a one-acre section for small dogs,” McCleary said. “Both sections feature trees for shade, benches, chairs, waste disposal bins and a fresh water supply in the entry area. On hot days, pups dipping in the baby pool is a familiar sight, so bring a towel.”

The park is open from sunrise to sunset yearround and requires a security swipe card to access. There is an annual membership fee, but financial assistance is available on a case-by-case basis.

“Sometimes, as I stand in the park with sunshine on my face, a gentle breeze in my hair and goosebumps on my arms, I get choked up, knowing firsthand the love and effort invested in this park and the joy it has brought to so many two-legged and four-legged beings,” McCleary said. “The park resonates with the spirits of hundreds of dogs who have passed away since we opened, including

The Giant Company, known locally as Giant and Martin’s, in partnership with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, has announced the 21 recipients of its 2026 Healing the Planet grants. A total of $100,000 was given to support projects across the company’s operating areas in Pennsylvania.

Group, which organizes the festival.

Washington Boro tomatoes are known for their flavor and texture, he said, noting that Lancaster County makes the perfect location to grow the fruit.

“It’s the sandy soil,” he said. “These tomatoes are sweet and juicy. They’re a more juicy, more meaty tomato, and they’re great for sandwiches.”

Tomatoes are coming in late this year, he said, but the festival will definitely have them.

“We use about 400 pounds of tomatoes,” Schock said.

Additional food for sale will include hamburgers, hot dogs with or without sauerkraut, sausage sandwiches and homemade chicken corn soup.

Funk’s Riverview Greenhouse will sell pies and fresh fruit, and both milkshakes and french fries will be for sale by vendors.

“This year, we’re also going to have green tomato pie,” Schock said. “A local guy is making it, and this is the first time he’ll be here.”

A variety of carnival-style games will be available, with a wide range of prizes.

People will have the opportunity to enter to win an e-bike, a grand prize of $500 or one of five $100 prizes.

On July 11, the band Border Line will entertain. On the 18th, Kracker Beez will provide the music.

“People will sit out and listen to the music all night long,” Schock said, encouraging attendees to bring their own chairs.

Fire Rescue, which covers 55 square miles of Manor Township and Millersville Borough, including six miles of the Susquehanna River.

“This festival has been going on for over 75 years,” Schock said, noting that the support group has not organized it that long. It was started by a local fire company, then run by the local Lions Club for years and then managed by the Washington Boro Fire Company before that company merged with the Highville, Millersville and West Lancaster companies to form Blue Rock Fire Rescue 15 years ago, he explained.

Pulling off a successful event requires a team of volunteers, which includes both members of the Blue Rock Fire Rescue Support Group and the wider community. Volunteers from Penn Manor FFA, the Washington Boro Historical Society and other groups give their time and talent to make the event fun for everyone, Schock said.

“It’s a lot of work to set this up,” he said. “We’ll start setting up on the Monday after the 4th of July weekend, and we’ll be here all week getting ready. On Thursday each week, we’ll probably cook about 75 pounds of bacon.”

Many people come out for both weekends to enjoy food, fellowship and live music at the event, which will be held rain or shine.

“The festival is a great local community event,” said committee member Kathy Fry. “It’s a fun time with family and friends.”

Companies Announce New Leadership

Horst Construction and Horst Excavating have announced that Harry F. Scheid II, who served as president of both organizations, retired from his role effective June 29, after nearly 40 years of service at Horst.

Scheid began his career at Horst in 1987, working his way through various roles within the organization before being named president of Horst Construction and Horst Excavating in 2007. In the following 18 years, Scheid’s leadership and vision drove the success of Horst’s operations and solidified the company’s presence in the commercial construction market throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

During his tenure, Scheid led initiatives to expand the company’s footprint, defined key processes integral to the company’s success, and sought to develop a culture built on trust and grit. Scheid has shifted

to an advisory role as chief executive officer for both companies, staying on the team in a more limited capacity to provide mentorship and ensure a smooth transition period.

Meanwhile, Kenneth J. Fetterolf has assumed the role of president at Horst Construction. Fetterolf is not new to the team, having served as the vice president of operations since 2010. He has worked in the construction industry in various capacities for over 30 years.

For Horst Excavating, Jason Hess has been appointed president. Hess is also a tenured Horst employee, having joined the team in 2012 and worked as a director of project management, eventually taking on the role of vice president of operations in 2024. Hess has been involved in the sitework industry in various capacities for over 25 years.

LCCTC Students Compete at National Event
