Manor Township Man Gets Makeover on “Today” Show

It’s not every day you get to be on TV. For Manor Township resident Marty Molitoris, it was a remarkable experience.

Marty appeared on the fourth hour of the show “Today With Jenna and Sheinelle,” which airs on NBC stations at 10 a.m. on weekdays. He was nominated, interviewed and selected for a Father’s Day makeover segment.

“I don’t use the term life-changing very often,” he said. “But what I went through, and seeing how an individual can come in and impact my life and open my eyes to things that I was blind to before ... it was something I will never forget.”

A Classic Rivalry Conestoga

Officials recently honored the Conestoga River as Pennsylvania’s River of the Year for 2026. The ceremony was held in Lancaster County Central Park and was a part of Lancaster Water Week, an annual celebration of the 1,400 miles of streams and rivers in Lancaster County, hosted by Lancaster Conservancy. This week of events encourages people to enjoy and learn about the waterways throughout the county and to

volunteer and take action to clean and protect them.

Historically, the Conestoga River was highly polluted, and many tributaries are still considered impaired. However, the river has become a source of increased recreation and enjoyment for local communities. It received 2,510 votes for River of the Year.

Cowboys and Eagles, a classic rivalry. But this game doesn’t take place in Philadelphia or Dallas, Texas. It hails from the Manheim Brethren in Christ Church.

The Chuckie Magee Flag Football and Cheerleading League, a Lancaster-based nonprofit that offers a competitive avenue for individuals between the ages of 18 and 40 with intellectual and developmental disabilities, is set to kick off its sixth season in July.

The league offers two teams, the Cowboys and the Eagles. The two teams will play a 10-game season that will begin on Saturday, July 25, and run through Saturday, Oct. 17. All games will be played on Saturdays, and most will be played at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. Select games (Aug. 22 and 29) will be played at Lancaster Brethren in Christ Church, 1865 Fruitville Pike, Lancaster.

“It’s like sandlot football,” said league founder Randy Samuels. “We show up and we play. There’s always shenanigans going on, a lot of fun and sneaky stuff being done. ... They come out, they have fun and get to exercise.”

Naturally, most of the league’s participants are fans of the Eagles. Samuels, who coaches the Cowboys, is a diehard Dallas fan - drawing the ire of many of his players.

The league’s cheerleaders are referred to as “Lancaster’s Sweethearts,” a registered trademark owned by Samuels. The term references the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders, who are known as “America’s Sweethearts.”

“I get booed so much, and I egg them on,” Samuels said.

and decided to nominate Marty without telling him. He was quite surprised when his daughters told him that a producer from the “Today” show wanted to talk with him.

“I thought that they were just playing games with me,” he said. “In talking to the producers of the segment after the fact, they said that (because of) my story and the love that they could feel through the written submission from both of my daughters, they just could not find it in their hearts to choose anybody else.”

Over the past year, Marty has lost around 170 pounds, something that was inspired by a minor health scare. The issue, as his family saw it, was that he was still wearing the same grossly oversized graphic T-shirts that he was wearing when Claire and Charlotte were born.

“He’s lost the weight, but he hasn’t taken the time to update his outside to how he feels on the inside,” Claire said on a recorded video that aired as part of the segment.

The change in body size has been a weight off Marty’s back - no pun intended. He now describes himself as more energetic and able to do more things than before. Marty and Cathy have season passes to Hersheypark this year; Marty said that this year was the first time in over a decade that he was able to ride a rollercoaster.

The Molitoris family spent parts of three days in New York City for the segment. First, Marty spent time with celebrity stylist Sam Spector, whose clients include Daniel Radcliffe and Neil Patrick Harris. After selecting his new look, the rest of the family got to see it on the day that the segment was filmed.

The new outfit was a bright linen suit from Banana Republic, a polar opposite from what he would wear before his weight loss. Marty was all smiles when he walked out, posing for the cameras and his family.

“I thought he looked amazing before, but now he’s even more amazing,” Cathy said on the segment.

“He looks so good,” Charlotte added. “He just looks so happy and confident. I love it.”

Cathy and Marty are set for a cruise this summer, celebrating their 31st wedding anniversary. But Marty did not wait until then to showcase his new look - his first day back to work following the excursion was June 23, and he donned his new suit.

The new look has opened a world of possibilities

for Marty, but it has also taught him what his proper size is.

“I was always a little apprehensive of shopping, because nothing really ever fit me when I went into a store shopping,” he said. “I’m more comfortable now going to those designs or those shades and colors, whereas before I would probably not have even approached them.”

Along with being an unforgettable experience, the makeover and everything that preceded it has changed Marty’s and his family’s lives for the better.

“It’s given me a new lease on life, for clothing and myself,” he said.

Conservancy Begins Renovations at Preserve

Lancaster Conservancy has begun renovations to Climbers Run Nature Center, its hub for conservation education and volunteerism, with the goals of improving access to the preserve and creating even more learning opportunities for visitors. The Conservancy marked the start of the project on May 7 with a ceremonial groundbreaking with key project funders, which included donors to the Conservancy’s Protect and Restore Campaign.

The updates to the preserve will include a new universal access trail, named for Judith and Jay Gibble, that will wind from the trailhead through demonstration gardens featuring native plants and pollinator-friendly landscaping with benches where visitors may pause and observe. A

deck extending from the Russo Family Foundation Barn and Education Center will invite visitors to experience the landscape from a new perspective. Other trails, like the Amos and Esta Funk Trail and Muller Woods Trail, will branch off and take visitors further into the preserve to explore and connect with nature.

Additional work will include a widened entrance drive with a school bus turnaround, an improved parking area, and renovations to the Russo Family Foundation Barn and Education Center to better support learning. These upgrades include a modern HVAC system, an improved interior layout, the installation of bird-safe glass, and the creation of a new community science lab.

The project will also seek to repair the spring-fed

pond and wetlands that greet visitors upon arrival. Several best management practices, including rain gardens, will be installed to capture and filter stormwater runoff from nearby agricultural fields as well as the preserve’s parking areas, roofs, and walkways. These improvements are intended to enhance the quality of water flowing into the pond and Climbers Run stream, which is important to the health of these freshwater aquatic ecosystems, particularly because the stream supports native reproducing brook trout.

Enhancements throughout the preserve will be made to transform Climbers Run into a catalyst for conservation education. Along the accessible trail, visitors will encounter

native plant gardens, interpretive signage, and restored meadows and streamside habitats suitable for birdwatching, both in person and online. Outdoor learning spaces, like the Thomas and Pamela Hall Bird Viewing Area, are designed to inspire current and future generations of environmental stewards.

Improvements to the Russo Barn will further support Climbers Run’s role as a hub for volunteers who conduct preserve stewardship, educational outreach, and community science projects across the Conservancy’s preserves, amplifying the Conservancy’s ability to care for nature and connect people with the outdoors.

Funding assistance for the site improvements to Climbers Run Nature Center has been provided by the Pennsylvania Department of

Conservation and Natural Resources’ Bureau of Recreation and Conservation with a grant from the Environmental Stewardship Fund. Funding assistance was also provided by the Lancaster County Community Foundation, the Richard King Mellon Foundation, and donors to the Protect and Restore Campaign.

Protect and Restore started as a 50th-anniversary campaign, and over the past six years the campaign has accelerated the Conservancy’s impact, allowing the organization to protect over 2,500 acres of natural land, undertake restoration and master planning projects, and expand trail networks, including five universal access trails planned or already constructed. One of the three key goals of the Protect and Restore Campaign is to update Climbers Run

Nature Center to expand the reach and impact of the Conservancy’s volunteer and education programs and deepen community engagement for years to come.

Project costs for Climbers Run are estimated at between $4.9 million and $5.5 million. The Conservancy will continue to raise funds for this project as part of the Protect and Restore Campaign through 2027. A sculpture at the entrance of the Russo Barn is planned to celebrate the donors who have invested in the Protect and Restore Campaign and its impact across the landscape.

Climbers Run Nature Center is closed to the public during the construction and restoration process. The Conservancy will continue to offer educational programming for school groups and adult learners at other locations,

Fundraising Campaign Expands Housing

Bridge of Hope has announced the successful completion of its $9.3 million Making Room comprehensive campaign, a milestone that is already expanding affordable housing access and strengthening long-term stability for families facing homelessness across Lancaster County, Chester County, and beyond.

Originally launched with an $8.4 million goal, the campaign was expanded as economic pressures increased the number of local families experiencing housing instability. At the same time, new opportunities emerged to secure additional homes and respond more urgently to the need.

In Lancaster County, campaign investments resulted in six affordable housing units located in Lititz, Manheim, Paradise Township, and Lancaster Township - communities where rising rents have increasingly outpaced wages. The locations of several of the homes will help children remain connected to their schools, routines, and support systems during times of

transition.

The campaign also helped launch the Bridgeport Housing collaboration with Chestnut Housing, Forest Hills Mennonite Church, and Conestoga Valley SEEDS. The partnership aims to add 12 to 15 affordable homes by 2027-28, expanding the community’s longterm capacity to respond to family homelessness.

Beyond individual homes, the Making Room campaign strengthened Lancaster County’s housing ecosystem by expanding creative strategies that help families facing homelessness move more quickly from crisis into housing, such as growing landlord partnerships, using master leasing and lease guarantees, strengthening cross‚Äësector collaboration, and increasing rental assistance.

The campaign also reinforced the supports that help families remain housed. Families often enter permanent housing after months or even years of instability, carrying the weight of prolonged stress and uncertainty. Through

Leroy Hopkins, professor emeritus of foreign languages at Millersville University, historian of the African American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania, and president of the board of the Underground Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, will present “Slavery in the Age of the Revolution: Lancaster Borough and Manor Township, From Bondage to Community.” Hopkins will

discuss the paradox of men fighting for personal liberty during the American Revolution while benefiting from the enslavement of others. He will close with a question-and-answer period. Hopkins holds leadership roles at LancasterHistory, the William Chester Ruth Legacy Project, Bethel Historical Services, the MLK Breakfast Committee, and the Advisory Committee of the Crispus Attucks Community Center of Lancaster. Hopkins is a Lancaster native who attended the city’s schools and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in German/Russian at Millersville University and a Ph.D. in Germanic Languages and Literatures

at Harvard University. He subsequently taught German as a teaching fellow at Harvard; as an assistant professor at Northeastern University; and as a professor at Millersville University, where he served from 1979 until his retirement in 2015.

Grants Awarded for Programs Aiding Youths

Advoz: Mediation & Restorative Services and the Touchstone Foundation were awarded $500,616 in grant funding to help expand their youth programs aimed at reducing student conflict and improving student mental health, respectively. The competitive grants, approved by the School Safety and Security Committee under the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, are part of more than $64 million awarded to organizations across the state.

The Advoz and Touchstone grants were recently announced by state Rep. Nikki Rivera. Advoz will use its $244,850 to expand its Restorative School Program at J.P. McCaskey High School in Lancaster city. The grant funds will cover the partial salaries

and benefits of the executive director, director of training, and restorative schools practitioner. Additionally, funding will be used for advertising and marketing expenses, rent, a laptop, general operating expenses, and information technology support. The program serves approximately 750 students annually, teaching them skills in communication, problem solving, emotional regulation, and constructive dialogue.

The Touchstone Foundation will use its $255,766 award to expand and strengthen Rise Above, a youth mental wellness initiative serving approximately 1,120 students and young adults ages 12 to 26 across Lancaster County. The funds will pay a partial amount of the current program manager’s time, pay for a program assistant and an operations manager and accountant, and support employee benefits and travel to school districts within Lancaster County. Funding will also be used to support program evaluation led by Millersville University’s Carrie Smith, as well as communications-related costs such as photography and video documentation.

Rise Above responds directly to community needs documented in the 2023 Pennsylvania Youth Survey and the Touchstone Foundation’s 2023 Needs Assessment, which showed high rates of depression, suicidal ideation, bullying, exclusion, and barriers to mental health access among Lancaster County youths. Through partnerships with local school districts, mental health professionals, and community organizations, the program blends mental health education, creative self-expression, youth leadership development, and mentorship to address gaps in early identification, access to support, and trusted adult relationships.

The league is completely free for participants and is funded through sponsorships from local businesses. About 30 individuals took part in the league last year. Samuels had hoped to have four teams this season but decided to stick with only the Cowboys and Eagles.

Samuels obtained nonprofit status for the league in December. After the last game of the season, there will be a celebratory awards banquet.

The league is still searching for sponsorships, as well as volunteers. Volunteers assist with every aspect of the game, including serving as a “buddy” for the more challenged playing members of the league.

“The buddy will catch the ball for them, hand it to them and guide them towards the end zone,” Samuels said.

The league is named

after Chuckie Magee, a Lititz resident who passed away in 2015 after a fight with undifferentiated pleomorphic bone sarcoma. Magee, a 2013 graduate of Warwick High School, was heavily involved with challenger baseball and football.

The league’s logo is modeled after Magee and uses the color red, which was his favorite color.

“Doctors (said) he wasn’t going to live to be a year old,” Samuels said of Magee. “If you knew Chuckie, you loved Chuckie. Everybody loved Chuckie.”

Registrations for the league are open. Samuels asks that those interested sign up as soon as possible, giving the league a chance to order shirts before the July 25 kickoff.

Volunteers Make Wolf Sanctuary Howling Success

At the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania, staff members have a difficult time imagining a world without volunteers.

“I think (an absence of volunteers) would truly affect how we operate,” said Michelle Vandernewt, the education coordinator at Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania. “We started as a volunteer organization.

The volunteer program is our backbone. All of our tour guides are volunteers. They come here in all kinds of weather. Some have been here a long time.”

A popular Lancaster County tourist attraction located at 465 Speedwell Forge Road, Lititz, the 80-acre Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania is home to nearly 50 rescued and relocated wolves. The task of maintaining and operating the wildlife refuge and caring for the wolves in their natural setting can be daunting, but it is one performed by 10 paid staff members and more than 50 dedicated

“They are people who fell in love with wolves,” said Vandernewt. “They’re people who genuinely care about wolves. They are people who like helping with wildlife. Our volunteers have such a passion for what they do.”

To express their appreciation for their contributions, officials at the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania recognize those efforts through posts on social media. The posts, which include photos and short narratives, are typically made on the anniversary of the volunteers’ start days, or “rescue dates.”

“We try to honor them publicly, and we try to express our gratitude when they’re here,” said Vandernewt.

Volunteers at the Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania typically work five- to sixhour shifts. Many of the volunteers are local, but some drive as much as two hours to volunteer there.

On any given day, as many as 15 individuals are volunteering at the wolf sanctuary. The volunteers’ work is scheduled based on their availability.

“I really think it’s the wolves,” said Vandernewt. “Volunteers visit before their interviews, and some fall in love with the wolves. They can’t help but stick around.”

Among the duties performed by volunteers at the wolf sanctuary are tour guiding, animal care, cleaning and general operational duties.

The Wolf Sanctuary of Pennsylvania hosts large fundraisers and offers guided and self-guided tours. When conditions are right, the wildlife refuge can host as many as 2,500 visitors per month.

“Our volunteers are great

noted Brian Gish, a Lancaster native and senior watershed planner with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF). “My entire life, I’ve encountered negative perceptions of this waterway, but recently I’ve seen attitudes pivot. In my conversations with the watershed’s farmers, residents, and leaders, indifference is transforming into passion and action.”

Gish has led a multi-year effort to develop a comprehensive plan to improve the headwaters of the Conestoga River.

“Countless projects are undoing centuries of damage, driven by a community - my community - reconsidering its relationship with this river,” Gish noted. “The Conestoga’s future is our future, and we’re taking steps to secure both. I’m seeing our river heal. If we stay the course, it will be healthy in our lifetimes.”

Ashley Spotts, CBF’s Lancaster restoration biologist, has worked on numerous projects along the Conestoga as well. She specializes in planting riparian buffers, groups of trees along waterways that filter out

pollutants.

“I’ve always had a passion for native plants, and I’ve worked 20 years with many farmers and landowners along the Conestoga River and its tributaries to plant trees in an effort to raise water quality,” Spotts said.

“It feels so good to return to a planting years later and see a small forest, with fruiting persimmons and oaks branches weighted down with acorns. Not only will this provide resources for the plants and animals on land, but I know these trees mean healthier water as well.”

CBF is planning an event, led by Spotts and scheduled to occur in August, that will bring together landowners, farmers, and partners to launch a watershed improvement plan developed by Gish for the Upper Conestoga watershed. Developing water quality plans in priority watershed areas, with support from partners and landowners, is central to CBF’s water improvement work throughout Pennsylvania.

Golfers Tee Up With HOPE

There are few things as relaxing and inspiring as a day on the golf course. Unless of course it’s a day on the golf course for a great cause.

HOPE International, a local faith-based nonprofit designed to aid underserved individuals around the world experiencing financial difficulties, is gearing up this year’s edition of its annual fundraising golf outing.

On Friday, Sept. 11, HOPE International’s golf outing will be staged at 8 a.m. at Iron Valley Golf Club in Cornwall. On the same day at 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., the event will be conducted at Wyncote Golf Club in Oxford.

“For 25 years, this golf tournament has been about so much more than golf,” said Jeff Rutt, HOPE International’s founder and chairman of the board.

“Every dollar raised has gone toward giving hardworking entrepreneurs in some of the world’s most vulnerable communities access to the small loans, savings and training they need to build a better future for their families.”

able round of golf, participants will enjoy on-course activities and opportunities to connect with likeminded individuals. Currently, organizers of HOPE International’s golf outing are seeking players and sponsors for the event.

A total of more than 300 participants are expected to attend HOPE International’s golf outing at both venues - mission supporters, community members, sponsors and golf enthusiasts.

“The purpose and goal behind the golf tournament is to raise funds to help further HOPE’s mission to equip millions of families and entrepreneurs globally by giving them a safe place to save, the opportunity to receive small microfinance loans to start businesses, as well as training to overcome poverty and find hope in Christ,” said Emma McMurray, events fellow for HOPE International.

The golf outing serves as HOPE International’s largest fundraising event. Over the past 25 years, HOPE International has positively affected the lives of 9.5 million people, both directly and indirectly.
