Lancaster Nonprofit to Host First Fundraiser at Millersville VFW

Supporting Empowering Lives Foundation (SELF) is holding a bingo fundraiser at the Millersville VFW Post 7294 on Sunday, June 28, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The post, located at 219 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville, will host the newly formed nonprofit’s first fundraising event.
SELF, formed last summer as the offshoot of another, now-defunct disabilities group, aims to help anyone with a disability live an independent life. According to the group’s website, its mission is “to serve clients with disabilities by identifying and addressing the gaps in support, resources and advocacy - picking the pieces so no one falls through the gaps.”
The event will consist of 10 normal bingo games, with the winner getting to pick a gift card prize. There will then be special games of bingo and a Chinese auction for

Strasburg Senior Citizens Celebrates 60th Anniversary

For six decades, the Strasburg Senior Citizens has been an organization unlike most others.
The group is not the average Rotary, Kiwanis or Lions Club, although it shares many of the same charitable causes.
The group, which celebrated its 60th anniversary in May, is a special place for those age 50 and older to fraternize, enjoy activities and forge a unique connection to the area and to each other.
A member of the Graybill family has been a part of the group for most of its existence. Kay Graybill is the group’s only active third-generation member; her grandmother and mother were both also active members in the past.

People from all around the county are members, although most are from Strasburg, Paradise, Quarryville, Ronks and the surrounding towns.

In May, PCA&D graduated 93 students. There are currently more than 400 students enrolled in PCA&D programs for the fall of 2026, about 70 percent of whom hail from Pennsylvania.
PCA&D, which is located at 204 N. Prince St., Lancaster, offers eight undergraduate degree programs, as well as continuing education opportunities and certificates in a wide array of design, art and creative disciplines. This fall, the college will be offering a new course in creative writing.

The First Responder Friends will host “Cars and Cones” on three dates this summer. The cruise-in style car show will be held on Friday, June 19; Friday, July 17; and Friday, Aug. 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Safe Harbor Park, 5365 River Road, Conestoga. There is a flat donation fee for anyone who wants to bring a car and enjoy some ice cream. There is no charge for spectators to attend, and they may purchase ice cream on-site. The group organizes a much larger car show in Conestoga annually in September, but these three summer shows are an opportunity to raise money while hosting a casual community event.

Students Publish Children’s Book
Penn Manor High School students recently wrote and published a children’s book titled “Goodnight Millersville.” Inspired by the charm and heart of the Millersville community, the 16-page illustrated bedtime story celebrates the familiar places, businesses, landscape, and history that make Millersville Borough special.
All proceeds from “Goodnight Millersville” will help support special needs children and adults at The Gem Foundation in Uganda. The Gem Foundation is dedicated to providing 24/7 nanny care, education, housing, nourishment, medical attention, and holistic care to vulnerable children. Vacation Bible School Posted

Benefit Auction to Support Clinic
The Clinic for Special Children (CSC), a nonprofit medical practice that provides affordable health care to children and adults with rare genetic disorders, will hold its 35th annual Lancaster County Benefit Auction on Saturday, June 20, at the Leola Produce Auction, 135 Brethren Church Road, Leola. The auction will begin at 8:30 a.m. and is free and open to the public. A breakfast buffet will open at 6:30 a.m.
The items to be auctioned include handmade quilts, handcrafted furniture, new bedroom suites, toys and collectibles, storage sheds, lawn furniture, crafts, farm supplies, and gift certificates. The event will also
offer a silent auction with unique items for bids. A variety of food will be available, including barbecue chicken, pork sandwiches, subs, french fries, freshly made pies, doughnuts, whoopie pies, and ice cream.
The funds raised from the annual benefit auctions provide nearly half of the CSC’s annual operating budget and allow the clinic to continue to provide affordable, specialized care to families facing rare genetic diseases. Each year, seven auctions across the country are held to support CSC. Since 1990, these auctions have raised close to $22 million to support the CSC’s mission. Heritage Sunday Set at Boehm’s Chapel
The Boehm’s Chapel Society will hold its annual Heritage Sunday on June 28 in the historic chapel at 13 W. Boehm’s Road, Willow Street.
The event will start with a business meeting at 3 p.m. At 4 p.m., the worship service will include a play about Martin and Eve Boehm, performed by the husband-and-wife team of Joan and Barry Trout.
Dale Mylin, the society’s president, will speak on the 10th anniversary of the Mennonite Conference reinstating Martin Boehm as bishop emeritus. There will be hymns and Scripture readings.
At 5 p.m., a hayride will
be offered to the Boehm homestead, down the hill from the chapel. There will also be an open house of the chapel and the tying shed, the chapel’s auxiliary building, until 6 p.m.
Martin and Eve Boehm hosted a class for early Methodists in their home and barn starting in 1775, the beginnings of what became today’s Boehm’s United Methodist Church. The chapel, erected in 1791, was the first structure built for Methodist worship in Lancaster County and the third in the country. It was restored to its 1791 appearance in 1991.

“We are very excited,” said Jacki Nagle, the group’s chief executive officer. “We are very fortunate to have a community behind us ... we have the entire community coming together to support us.”
Nagle explained that while children with disabilities are in school, they are entitled to services through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. But as soon as they graduate from high school, many families lose access to needed resources, depending on income.
That’s where SELF steps in.
“Services are changing, and we need to make sure that people with disabilities don’t fall through the cracks,” Nagle said. “They still need to receive the support and
services that they’re eligible (for) and entitled to as humans.
“Disability is kind of a secondary thing to us,” she went on. “We just want to make sure that people with disabilities specifically are seen as integral parts of society.”
The group, physically located at 313 Liberty St., Suite 365, Lancaster, primarily serves those in Lancaster and Lebanon counties but will not turn down anybody who asks for help.
For the moment, SELF is offering services on a purely volunteer basis, although its staff has combined decades of experience. Its fundraiser at the Millersville VFW is the first step toward offering more services.
“We are very dedicated to doing this work,” said Deborah Chapman-Stumpf, SELF’s director of programming. “I personally have been devastated that we’re not able to do it as well as we can because we don’t have the money to really put into it yet.”

The group has around 35 active members, Graybill said. At the group’s June meeting, they will formally celebrate their sixth decade of existence. Former members have been invited back to reminisce and share stories of the past.
The group was launched in 1966 by Richard Chambers and Joseph Gonder, two men who were both referred to as “some of Strasburg’s most prominent citizens,” per old editions of the Stras -
burg Heritage Society’s magazine.
Outside of its monthly meetings, the group has restaurant meetups and theater outings around Lancaster County and takes bus trips beyond the immediate area.
“I think we are a little unique,” Graybill said.
“For 60 years we’ve maintained this organization, which is really hard at any day and age. I belong to several other groups, and it’s like pulling teeth to get them to do things anymore. It’s been fun to have a group that is willing to do the work and have fun.”

students to take college courses and earn both college and high school credit. They have been found to increase college readiness, attendance, and attainment, especially among traditionally underserved students, who are often underrepresented in dual credit courses.
Millersville has established agreements with the School District of Lancaster, Penn Manor School District, and La Academia Partnership Charter School so that their students may participate in the Dual Enrollment Scholars Academy, comprising grant-funded summer workshops and dual credit courses taught by Millersville faculty at the local schools and at the university.
The grant, which will extend over a two-year period, will allow Millersville to host weeklong summer workshops this year and next focused on four career pathways: teaching, business and entrepreneurship, applied engineering, and human services. Students will live in campus residence halls and eat in the dining hall. They will also enjoy field trips to various locations.

Blue Rock Fire Rescue is facing the same issues as municipalities across the state and country. To stay afloat, stations are closing and merging with other fire companies. We’re in the midst of a $10 million capital campaign to build a new station so we can sustain the VOLUNTEER fire service. The budget for our VOLUNTEERS is $1 million annually. Local career (PAID) agency budgets are $8-14 million annually.

Over the past 15 years, a lot of tax dollars have been spent upgrading and maintaining the Highville station, a building we do not own. Continuing to maintain these two old, aging buildings is untenable for your tax dollars. In 2025, the western portion of our district only had 10% of our 890 calls.
