Servant Stage Company (SSC) will present the Broadway classic “My Fair Lady” at Millersville University’s Winter Visual and Performing Arts Center, 60 W. Cottage Ave., Millersville, on select dates from Friday, May 31, through Saturday, June 15. Lerner and Loewe’s award-winning story of a Cockney flower seller transformed into an elegant lady is widely considered one of the greatest musicals of all time. When Professor Henry Higgins tries to teach Eliza Doolittle how to speak like a proper lady, an unlikely friendship begins to flourish. Shredding Event Will Support Scholarships By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce (SLCCC) members are looking forward to hosting the eighth annual document shredding event rain or shine on Friday, June 7, from 1 to 4 p.m. The event raises funds for student scholarships. “It’s fun. We’re all volunteers,” said event chair Holly Filius. “It really is giving back to the community so kids have the opportunity to meet some of their expenses.” For a donation, members of the public may bring sensitive documents to the shredding truck, which will be parked at the site of the former Burkholder’s Used Cars, 2539 N. Sameeha is the daughter of Kazi Hossain and Sharmin Maswood of Millersville. She was a member of NHS and SNHS and participated in Student Council, Serteen, Young Humanitarian League, Scrubs Club, Chick-Fil-A Leader Academy, and Mini-THON. She played piano and clarinet in the school band. Sameeha plans to major in biology/ pre-med at Franklin & Marshall College. Erica is the daughter of Brian and Michelle Shaub of Lancaster. She participated in the Young Humanitarian League, Varsity Club, and chorus and was a member of the swimming and volleyball teams. Erica plans to study mathematics at the University of Colorado. A benefit concert for the Crispus Attucks Community Center will be held on Sunday, June 2, at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 29 E. Walnut St., Lancaster. The idea for the concert came from Kiana Corley, a singer-songwriter. Susquehanna Heritage will hold The River Experience, its major annual fundraising event, on Friday, June 7, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the River Room at John Wright Restaurant, 234 N. Front St., Wrightsville. The event will feature tastings of savory and sweet treats from local restaurants, a river-centered silent auction, live music and river views from the patio. Imani Edu-Tainers African Dance Company will present its 24th annual community concert on Saturday, June 15, at 7:30 p.m. at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The performance, which will be appropriate for audience members of all ages, will celebrate the history of traditional African dance and drumming. Imani’s Performing Ensemble has spent the last year collaborating with its international artist network to create a highenergy, entertaining, and educational concert that will be the culminating event of the organization’s 2018-19 season. I feel humbled - and a bit awed - to work on it,” Bosso remarked. “Our goal is to create a piece that fulfills the expectations of the audience while still bringing a freshness to it whenever we can.” The production is fully staged with a cast of 25 local performers and a 12-piece orchestra. The lead roles of Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins are played by SSC veterans Leslie Talley and Chris Wert, respectively. Talley previously appeared as Meg in SSC’s production of “Little Women,” and she has portrayed biblical characters Eve and Mary at Sight & Sound Theatres. Advoz was granted $18,500 for its program Stand in Justice: Surrogate Victim-Offender Dialogue for Youth, which helps teens ages 12 to 18 in the juvenile justice system to develop empathy. Lancaster-Lebanon IU13 was granted $13,800 for its Envision U Symposium, which helps high-risk youths in their transition to adulthood. The SLCCC serves businesses, nonprofits, and individuals primarily south of Route 30. Membership is open to anyone who has an interest in that region, Filius said. Currently, the SLCCC has just under 200 members. There is a fee to join. Guests are welcome to attend the group’s meetings, which are held at 7:30 a.m. on the second Thursday of every month at the Quarryville Library, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville. Guest speakers typically present on business-related topics. “Networking is great because it’s a small chamber,” Filius said. “There’s a lot of intra-chamber business,” added board member Mandy Leggett, sharing how SLCCC members like to refer clients to other members. In addition to hosting the shredding event, the SLCCC supports the Solanco Fair and assists the parade committee and hosts an annual Christmas tree lighting in Quarryville on the first Friday in December. Mixers are held throughout the year at members’ businesses or offices, a members-only banquet is held in March, and a members-only bonfire is held at Black Rock Retreat in October. The Penn Manor Comets, with six lacrosse players recognized, were well represented in the recent Lancaster-Lebanon (L-L) League all-star selections. Seniors Billy Briegel and Riley Neuman were First Team Defense selections. Briegel collected 119 groundballs, caused 65 turnovers, and is a three-time First Team All-League selection. He was an honorable mention as a freshman. Briegel is also a 2019 Central Pennsylvania Lacrosse Chapter Academic All American, having earned a 4.24 GPA. He accepted and signed a Division 1 lacrosse scholarship with the University of Hartford. Neuman forced 43 turnovers and collected 67 groundballs. He was Second Team All-League as a junior.
Josh Heckman, a senior, is a First Team Midfielder. He scored 48 goals, dished out 19 assists, and had a 68% winning percentage at faceoff. He was a First Team All-League selection as a faceoff specialist last year. Heckman also received Academic All American status with a 4.46 GPA. He was accepted at and signed with Divison 3 Swarthmore College to continue his education and lacrosse career. Receiving Second Team recognition on Attack was sophomore Clayton Hollinger with 39 goals and 18 assists. He was a Second Team All-League selection as a freshman. Senior Aydan Hinkle received Academic All-League recognition while senior Evan Lyon received the LL League Class Act Award.

Celtic band Réalta will join a lineup of a variety of musical groups to play at Long’s Park as part of the Long’s Park Summer Music Series. This year, the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation will emphasize familiar tunes, with a tribute weekend scheduled in June. By Ann Mead Ash
Steve Deck, chair of the Long’s Park Summer Music Series committee, said that the group had a specific goal in mind when choosing performers for this year’s schedule. “Getting more music everybody knows was key,” said Deck. “This year we will have several bands that will play more familiar music.” With that aim in mind, the committee has lined up an Eagles tribute band, an evening of Beatles tunes, and a celebration of Woodstock among a number of other musical presentations for the organization’s summer season, which will run from Sunday, June 2, through Sunday, Aug. 25. All concerts will be held in Long’s Park, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, beginning at 7:30 p.m., rain or shine. Most concerts will be on Sundays, but three Saturday night concerts will also be included in this year’s lineup. According to Deck, the series will kick off with the June 2 concert, which will feature John McEuen, one of the founders of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. “He is very engaging and will be great for the crowd,” said Deck. The second week of the Summer Music Series has been dubbed “tribute weekend,” according to Deck. “Come and hear songs you know and like to sing along to,” he said. On Saturday, June 8, local artist Corty Byron will play Beatles tunes in a “Post White Album” show, and on Sunday, June 9, Seven Bridges, a nationally touring Eagles tribute band, will take to the park stage. Another June show will feature Allegro, which will return for a Father’s Day performance on Sunday, June 16. Gospel and soul singer Liz Vice will bring her indie rock-infused sounds to the park on Sunday, June 23, and the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” will play a patriotic concert on Sunday, June 30, in conjunction with a fireworks display to celebrate Independence Day. The first concert of July will feature
Nooky Jones, which Deck called a “hip” band, noting that it should attract a young crowd. The group will perform in the amphitheater on Sunday, July 7. On Saturday, July 13, Matches, a local band with a sound Deck noted is reminiscent of Tower of Power or Chicago, will play. The Sunday, July 14, band, MINAS, was chosen in response to suggestions made on the music series’ website. The Brazilian couple plays Latin-flavored music with an expanded appeal. “They have a wonderful sound,” said Deck, who described MINAS as bossa nova. “It’s very danceable without being hard driving,” he said. “It’s bring-someoneto-dance-with kind of music.” Lachy Doley, a Hammond organ player who is visiting from Australia, will play on Sunday, July 21. “He is the Jimi Hendrix of the Hammond organ. He pounds away,” said Deck. July will finish up with Celtic band Réalta on Sunday, July 28. The Sunday, Aug. 4, concert will feature Danny Kortchmar and Friends, studio musicians known for backing up Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, and others. “They will play lots of familiar music,” said Deck. On Sunday, Aug. 11, country music singer Phil Vassar will play at the park. “His songs are very Americana country,” said Deck. On Saturday, Aug. 17, a special event highlighting the 50th anniversary of Woodstock will feature local artists and more well-known songs. The Sunday, Aug. 18, concert will feature blues artist Davy Knowles, and the season will conclude on Aug. 25 with the Cajun-flavored sounds of Terrance Simien and Zydeco Experience. “He is very engaging and a big crowd pleaser,” shared Deck. For more information about bulk shredding, readers may contact Filius at 717-475-4129. “Almost every dollar goes back into the community,” Filius remarked, noting that after costs for the event are covered, the remainder of the proceeds goes into an education fund. The SLCCC aims to annually award three $1,000 scholarships to local graduating seniors to support business-oriented plans, whether that is attending college or a technical or trade school or even becoming an entrepreneur. Lampeter-Strasburg, Solanco, and Penn Manor students are eligible for the scholarships, but no one from Penn Manor has applied in recent years. In addition to supporting local youths, the shredding event is a service to the community by providing a secure way to dispose of sensitive materials. “People can bring more and shred it faster than doing it at home,” Filius said. “It’s a really inexpensive way to shred confidential documents.” Typically, between 10,000 and 15,000 pounds of materials are processed during the event. “We get a lot of bulk shredding from law offices and home care too,” Filius commented. At the event, SLCCC members will unload boxes from vehicles in a drivethrough line. Folks who want to watch their documents enter the shredder may

Coming just short of earning a district medal was the 4x400meter relay team of Taz Whitfield, Josenlly Martinez, David Kramer and Mowbray. The fourth seed (3 minutes, 25.70 seconds) settled for ninth after clocking a 3:29.65. Also competing but placing outside the medal round was sophomore Martinez, who was 18th in the 400 meters. Graham Thomas was 12th in the 3,200-meter run. He was the third sophomore to place. Marilyn Keernick was 16th in the 200 meters and the third sophomore to cross the finish line. Kyle Murr, one of two sophomores to place in the triple jump, was seeded 16th with a 43-5 and moved into 12th place with a 445 1/2 distance. Over a dozen Penn Manor Comet track and field athletes made the trip to Shippensburg University’s Seth Grove Stadium to compete in the District Three Championships on May 17 and 18. They came home with five top eight medals, and four athletes qualified for the PIAA state championships. Matt Julian, the top seed in the pole vault, lived up to his billing. Seeded first with a height of 15-1, the senior cleared 15-7, a personal best, to easily grab gold as Northern’s Michael Ginder was second with a 15-0. “That vault qualifies Matt for the New Balance Outdoor Nationals,� said head coach Ben Shober. The Comets’ next highest medal winner was Josh Gibson. Seeded fifth in the javelin with a 185-0, the junior exceeded that distance, throwing a personal best 186-1 to earn a bronze medal. Also in the throws, Jaylyn Clow competed in the discus and settled for a sixth-place finish with a 121-11 throw. The sophomore, who was seeded second with a 135-0, was just one of four sophomores in the field. On the track, Chad Mowbray finished in seventh place with 49.72 seconds, just a tad off his sixth-place seed time of 49.71, and Jasmine Miller grabbed a sixth-place medal in the 100meter dash, clocking a 12.77.

Twenty-three Manor Middle School students got an up-close look at health care careers when they participated in the Health Careers Expo, held on March 27 at the Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences. Students participated in a virtual reality experience that included studying sonograms, performing CPR, assisting in an operation and identifying medications. Myers Named Nursing Director Landis Homes has announced that April Myers joined the team recently as director of nursing. She will be responsible for clinical care administration in all areas of health care, including rehab and memory care. This includes program planning, organization, implementation and evaluation of a resident-focused care environment. Myers, who has 20 years of health care experience, has worked in many roles in nursing and has served at hospitals, wound care centers and retirement communities. She previously worked part-time at Landis Homes while in nursing school. Her experience includes time as an LPN, RN supervisor, RNAC and assistant director of nursing since 2015. Myers received her LPN degree at Lancaster County Career and Technology Center. She studied business and received her RN degree from
