Penn Manor e-sports team honored at Capitol BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
layers on Penn Manor High School’s e-sports team recently visited the state Capitol, where they were recognized for their achievements of the past year. On April 24, state Rep. Ismail Smith-Wade-El recognized the players on the floor of the House of Representatives. Penn Manor High School’s Rocket League team acquired first place in two tournaments this year: the Rocket League High School E-sports League State Championship in January and the Harrisburg University PA Cup in April. Nathan Mintzer, captain of the varsity Rocket League team, credited his team’s success with effective strategizing and communication. “We tried to look at our opponents and find out what their weaknesses were,” Mintzer said. “We also worked a lot on making sure we had a good bond as a team. Being more than just teammates and knowing each other as people were key components as well.”

Lasagna Love delivers kindness
Nearly half a million served
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
There’s something comforting about a lasagna. That’s the message behind Lasagna Love, an international organization that began in 2020 during the height of the pandemic, recruiting volunteers to make and deliver lasagnas to people in need. Sandi Mauer, coordinator of Lasagna Love for Lancaster County, said the organization is looking for volunteers, as well as people who would like to receive a lasagna. “We are here to help anyone in need, and there’s no judgment whatsoever,” Mauer stated. “The goal of the program is to feed families, spread kindness and strengthen communities.”
Mauer began volunteering with Lasagna Love last summer, and she soon found out that the county coordinator for the program didn’t live locally. She stepped up to organize efforts in the area, and lasagnas are currently delivered throughout Lancaster County by Lasagna Love volunteers. “People can sign up for a lasagna if they have any need,” Mauer explained, adding that people can sign up at https://lasagnalove.org/request. “It could be a financial need or a health issue or an emotional need, or anyone who just needs a break from life for a moment. They can request a lasagna, and then we match them up with a volunteer who will deliver it. We don’t turn anyone down for any reason.” See Lasagna Love pg 3
Power Packs Project seeks volunteers BY ANN MEAD ASH
Power Packs Project volunteer Lynn Glielmi (left) and executive director Brad Peterson help prepare Power Packs to be delivered to participating schools.
“There are similar programs, but to the best of our knowledge there is no one that does exactly what we do,” stated Brad Peterson, executive director with Power Packs Project, which delivers ingredients to make a nutritious meal to families in Lancaster, York, and Lebanon counties. Peterson noted that last year, the organization provided nearly half a million meals made up of more than 500,000 pounds of food. See Power Packs pg 2

Penn Manor High School’s other e-sports teams have seen a successful year as well; the school’s Overwatch team climbed to the playoffs after an undefeated season. “We got to know each of our players and played around each of their strong suits,” said Brock Kirstner, captain of the Overwatch team. “We had to evolve our strategy as well so we weren’t sticking to the same approach every time.” Players on the Minecraft, League of Legends, Minecraft and Brawlhalla teams were among those recognized at the state Capitol. “Communication is a core piece of each team,” said Scott Herzog, head coach of the e-sports program. “In Overwatch, it’s about the map and positioning; in Rocket League, it’s calling out where players are on the field. It’s like any other sports you play, and the players learn important skills.” Penn Manor High School’s esports program was created four years ago and began with the Overwatch team.
