Lancaster Railway Society Celebrates 90th Anniversary
BY FRANCINE FULTON

The Lancaster Chapter, National Railway Historical Society (NRHS), which aims to preserve history and railroad artifacts, as well as educate the public about railroading and its history, is in the middle of celebrating its 90th anniversary.
According to a history of the Lancaster Chapter, NRHS, provided by chapter historian Linda Himpsl, it began in 1934 when a few young railroad and trolley enthusiasts met in an old trolley in Neffsville, forming the Lancaster Railway & Locomotive Historical Society. In 1935, the group merged with the Interstate Trolley Club and other organizations to form the NRHS. The Lancaster Chapter was the first charter organized in the NRHS, launching on Oct. 13, 1935.
Today, chapter meetings are

Auditions
The Allegretto Chamber Orchestra is Nextgen’s premier ensemble for advanced students in grades eight through 12. Allegretto demands the utmost musicianship and professionalism of students in a chamber orchestra setting. Students in this ensemble receive guidance and instruction to perform standard repertoire and newly composed orchestral music. Allegretto is under the direction of founding conductor Brian Norcross and assistant conductor Francis Caravella.
During the 2025-26 season, Overture and Allegretto gave combined performances, providing a unique experience to students. Allegretto students had the opportunity to experience a full symphonic orchestra setting, and Overture students were challenged by some of Allegretto’s advanced repertoire.
Allegro Nextgen aims to develop a love of the creative endeavor
through exceptional, positive rehearsal and performance opportunities of varied, high-quality repertoire, with a wide range of performance ensembles. These musical opportunities are unique and designed to enhance what the students can learn in their normal scholastic musical experiences.
The Nextgen team believes that every child should have the opportunity to develop his or her intellectual and artistic capacity through playing a musical instrument and participating in a variety of musical ensembles and opportunities.
Auditions for the 202627 season of Overture and Allegretto will be held from Saturday, May 30, to Monday, June 1, at First United Methodist Church, 29 E. Walnut St., Lancaster. held in the 1882 freight station in Christiana, which was restored by the chapter in 1998. Members, who come from various backgrounds, all share a love of railroading. “Most people have an interest in railroads, history or just trains in general. Very few of us actually worked for the railroad,” noted Steve Himpsl, second director. “Some have model trains. They are avid collectors.”
“Some have fathers or grandfathers who worked the railroad,” added Linda.
Last October, chapter members and invited guests celebrated the milestone during a chapter meeting at the freight station where they enjoyed cake and ice cream and a display of memorabilia dating from 1934 to the present.
There was also a chapter banquet held at Hershey Farm Resort in November. Tony White, NRHS president, presented the Lancaster Chapter a Certificate of Recognition for its 90th anniversary and for being the first charter chapter of the organization. In addition to Steve and Linda, accepting the certificate were Tom Shenk, president; Glenn Kendig, first vice president; Cindy Kendig, first director; Richard Ruttledge, treasurer; David Stambaugh, second vice president; and member Gayle Stambaugh.
caboose on-site.
In addition to a holiday open house held during Christmas in Christiana, the stations is open for tours by appointment.
“We have a deck and we often have people come and hang out on the deck and watch the trains,” Steve said. “We want to get people into the station and to view the caboose.”
The Lancaster Chapter, NRHS members have restored, preserved and donated many train- and rail-related projects to Lancaster County and surrounding communities through the years, including a trolley from Lancaster, a Reading Railroad Company crossing watchman’s box and various railroad cars. The chapter has also organized Amtrak rail trips to many places, including Horseshoe Curve; western Pennsylvania; and Mystic Seaport, Conn. “Amtrak would add passenger cars on their trains to accommodate how many tickets were sold,” Steve explained. “We would sell 18-car trains.”

One of the chapter’s major accomplishments was the restoration of the freight station, located at 10 Railroad Ave., Christiana. Notably, the station was featured in the 1985 movie “Witness” starring Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis.
According to Linda, the two-story building was moved east 40 feet to its present location in 1903 to install additional track. Passenger service ceased in 1907, when the new Christiana passenger station on the opposite side of the tracks was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad; it terminated service in 1952. Amtrak now leases the 1888 freight station building, gang house, 1907 passenger station and trackside property to the Lancaster Chapter, NRHS. The chapter also maintains a Conrail
The group generally meets on the third Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m. Meetings usually feature a guest speaker or a slideshow of railroad history. Outings are also planned. “We (might meet) at Strasburg Rail Road and ride the train, and when it comes back we have our meeting on the train. We mix it up,” noted Linda.
Members pay a yearly fee, which gets them the Lancaster Dispatcher, the chapter’s monthly newsletter. New members are welcome. “Many young people are not interested in railroading anymore because they did not grow up with it,” noted Steve. “We are more than happy to have young people come in and join us.”

6 to 12, at noon.
A bitternut hickory tree (Carya cordiformis) planted in commemoration of the United States’ 250th birthday will be dedicated at 11:15 a.m. The bitternut hickory was selected due to Lancaster’s ties to hickories. When settlers arrived in the Lancaster area in the 1700s, hickory trees were prevalent, earning the town its first name, Hickorytown. Hickory forests were vast and thick and cultivated by local Native Americans for food and medicinal purposes. The tree was instrumental to early life in Lancaster, also
providing wood for furniture, flooring, and tools. All events are free and open to the public. The event will take place rain or shine, with most programs held outdoors in fair weather and moved indoors in the event of rain. Program to Focus on Chronic Pain
Millersville Community Church, 163 W. Frederick St., Millersville, will host a program on chronic pain during its monthly Circles of Strength wellness workshop on Saturday, April 25, from 9:30 to 11 a.m.
Jeff Short will share his personal experience with chronic pain. He traces his pain back to an otherwise unexceptional driveway basketball game with his kids, when he began feeling foot discomfort similar to plantar fasciitis. Despite treatment, the pain persisted for 20 years and spread to other parts of his body. Eventually, Short came across the works of Dr. John E. Sarno, author of “Healing Back Pain: The Mind-Body Connection.” Following Sarno’s advice, he began to find relief from the pain. Since then, he has helped many others on a similar path of recovery.

During the workshop, Short will recount success stories and share some of Sarno’s methods. There will be a question-and-answer time.
To register, contact Kelly Dennis at kelly@kellyf dennis.com.

Wayside Will Celebrate 40th Anniversary
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
Wayside Presbyterian Church hopes its 40th anniversary celebration will float the community’s boat.
The festivities will take place over two days, with a “Yacht Rock” concert on Saturday, April 25, and a special worship service and get-together on Sunday, April 26. Everyone is invited to attend the events.
Wayside’s house band, Grace Notes, will perform at 7 p.m. on April 25 at the church, 600 Stone Battery Road, Landisville. Grace Notes leads music for Wayside’s Sunday contemporary worship as well as playing at free community events throughout the year.
The praise band will perform songs by Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross, Orleans, and others. “They’re doing a secular set of smooth, jazzy, classic songs that I grew up on,” said Steve Fritz, who has been Wayside’s pastor since 2000. “In the yacht rock variety. Softer rock and roll, pleasing, beautiful. Not harsh and not sappy. Just really loving.”
A combined Sunday service will be held on April 26. “We will have some charter members here,” said Fritz. “We’ll have special music from Frank Richards, who was playing when we broke ground for this facility, played at the 10th anniversary, and has played for many occasions, and will reprise some of that early music with some updated lyrics, celebrating 40 years.”
A social gathering will follow the service. “It’ll be a stand-up reception for those who are here to get to reacquaint,” Fritz said. “We have some folks who have returned after a time away from church, and we’ve had some new people, often with a young family or older in life. People discover the need for their faith roots to be watered and fed. Our ministry is a neighborhood ministry that grew up, quite literally, with the neighborhoods around us.”
The reception will feature finger foods, drinks, coffee, and non-alcoholic punch. “It is a celebration, which is part of who we are, and we do that every week,” said Fritz. “It’s part of our DNA.”
Congregant Deb Kereczman said the initial meeting to form a new church

was held in 1983 by the late Gail Benjamin, a former moderator for the Donegal Presbytery (PC USA), and the late Rev. Dr. William J. Brown, former executive Presbyter for the Donegal Presbytery, organized the first meeting for a new church in the Hempfields in 1983.
Kereczman noted that Wayside was organized by the Presbytery in 1985, first meeting at the Silver Spring fire hall and then the former Easter Seals building in Rohrerstown, before buying the land in October 1986 and breaking ground for its present home on the 8.6acre property in 1988. The new building was dedicated in 1989.
Wayside outgrew its building in 2005, expanding to provide a multi-use sunlit atrium, a Family Ministry wing, a large kitchen, and spacious nursery.
“There’s been about 100 people committing to membership, our charter members,” said Fritz. “The basic idea was, with a growing Lancaster County, and the Hempfields, and wonderful church ministries already here, a reformed ministry was the vision. Presbyterians in the Reformed tradition, coming out of the 16th-century European Reformation, planted a church here from five different churches. So, we’re celebrating that longevity when so many churches
start and close up early and some longer churches finish up early. Wayside has continued and is thriving as a medium-size church with a staff and pastorate that ministers to a congregation of about 150.”
Wayside took its name from its organizing pastor, the Reverend Ronald B. Fritts, from Scripture in Luke 24:35, “on the way.”
“The mission of the church is ‚ÄòWalking with Jesus, sharing Christ along the way,’ with a 5-year vision to impact religious decline, become a beacon of connection with families in the neighborhood, and reach the needs of the seniors’ population,” said Kereczman.

Wayside prides itself on being an integral part of the community. Kereczman stated that the church works with the Hempfield Area Food Pantry providing volunteer staffing, food donations, and proceeds from the annual Waystock
Community Music and Fun Fest held on the second Saturday in June.
Wayside also assists Columbia Dream Center, the nearest homeless shelter hosted by its sister church, Columbia Presbyterian, supporting them with needs
throughout the year as well as quarterly meals. Wayside hosts free block parties for two major outreach events, including Waystock.
Wayside offers two Sunday morning worship services, with a traditional service from 9 to 10 a.m., followed by
fellowship and a contemporary service with Grace Notes from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Beginning Memorial Day weekend, Wayside will host one Sunday service at 10:00 a.m., with a blend of praise and traditional music.
