Oh Baby! Acorn Acres Will Hold Shower

Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation will commemorate the beginning of its busiest time of the year.

The nonprofit organization will hold its inaugural Wildlife Baby Shower on Saturday, March 28, from 2 to 6 p.m. at its facility, 2100 Stone Mill Road, Lancaster.

“It’s a time to celebrate all of the incoming babies that we are about to receive,” said executive director Betsy Shank. “We are officially in baby season. Our top three animals that we treat - squirrels, bunnies, and opossums - are all having babies or have had babies. We’re about to be inundated.”

Although registration is not required, Shank is encouraging visitors to sign up by Friday, March 27. Go to www.acornacreswr.com and click on the “Programs/Events” tab.

The baby shower will include a tour of the facility. “People can see

all the ambassador animals and our resident animals,” said Shank. “We will have baby feeding going on. They can’t actually witness it live because I’m not allowed to exhibit

those animals, but we can bring it up on our TV.”

There will also be free sips and snacks. “We’ll have small sandwiches, finger foods, and your

Diane Smith Puts Others Ahead of Herself, In and Out of Water

Diane Smith is leading her best life. It is a rich, fulfilling existence in which volunteering plays a major role - and not just because doing good and helping others is important.

Smith has the heart of a Susquehanna Valley Team River Runner, and she is following her heart.

“I think everyone has a time in their life when they might need someone or need something from someone,” said Smith. “I want to be that person who who can help, even if it’s a small gesture. Mental health is such a big deal or should be. Being able to participate and being there for someone is very important.”

Come out for bingo on Sunday, April 12, and you could take home some cash while helping cats in need.

Precious Paws Community Cats will hold its second annual bingo at the Millersville VFW, 219 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville, from 1 to 5 p.m. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m., and food service will begin at noon.

“We will be playing 24 games total,” explained Kathy Ann Kramer, treasurer of Precious Paws. “Twenty

A 1995 graduate of Conestoga Valley High School, Smith notes that her altruistic spirit was nurtured growing up. Her mother fostered more than 100 children, her father served as a police officer for East Lampeter Township and her teachers and developmental learning experience in the Conestoga Valley School District inspired her.

Now as an adult, Smith’s soul for giving back has blossomed.

“I had a really fun high school experience,” said Smith. “I was in the band; I was a band geek. I was in chorus. I was big into singing and acting. We went to all the football games, and I had a lot of friends. In high school, I got into science, IT (information technology) and nursing. I feel like

Play Bingo to Support Dreams in Columbia

For an afternoon of fun, food and fellowship, get tickets for bingo to benefit the Columbia Dream Center. Bingo will be held on Saturday, April 11, at the Knights of Columbus, 1575 New Danville Pike, Lancaster. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m., and bingo will begin at 1:30 p.m.

The event will feature food, door prizes, basket giveaways, 20 rounds of regular bingo, four special bingo games, a 50/50 drawing, a pick-your-prize bingo and more.

“Our famous grab bags will be back again with even more surprises inside, but get them quick because they sell out every year,” said Cheryl Schmidt, fundraising coordinator for the Columbia

Dream Center. “New this year will be the sale of pull tabs with cash prizes. Basically, there is something for everyone!”

Bingo prizes will include designer handbags, Yeti products, tools, cash and more.

People are encouraged to come hungry to the event.

“We will be selling hot dogs, sodas, water, walking tacos, mac and cheese, veggie cups, fruit cups, chicken corn soup, pulled pork sandwiches and a variety of baked goods,” said Jenn Hollinger, director of outreach ministries for the center.

Proceeds from the event will be used to further the mission of the Columbia Dream Center.

“Columbia Dream Center exists to provide food, shelter, clothing and resources to Columbia and

the surrounding areas,” Hollinger said of the organization located at 360 Locust St., Columbia. “We look to find a need and fill it and find a hurt and heal it.”

Money from the bingo will help to provide food and shelter to the homeless; serve meals to children over the summer; provide weekend food boxes for families; and support the center’s food pantry, soup kitchen, clothing bank and Restart Day Center.

This is the fourth year the Columbia Dream Center has hosted bingo, and the event gets better every year, said Schmidt.

“This is a jam-packed day of fun, fellowship and bingo,” she remarked. “Each year I strive to keep things fresh and interesting.

Our prizes are top-notch, our (giveaways) are worth playing for and the cause we benefit is phenomenal!”

She recommended purchasing tickets early.

“Tickets will be available until they sell out,” she said. “We can’t guarantee tickets will be available at the door. Last year’s bingo sold out 10 days before bingo!”

To purchase tickets, visit https:// tinyurl.com/2bss75em or https:// tinyurl.com/4r5j594m or call 228-437-4876.

of the games will be regular bingo with a $100 cash prize for each. There will also be four special games, including a final game with a grand prize of a Kate Spade tote filled with $400 in cash.”

She said the afternoon will be split into two sessions, with 10 regular games and two special games followed by an intermission, or “cat nap,” she joked, and then the second group of regular and special games.

“We’ll play for the letter C, the letter A and the letter T in the special games,” Kramer noted. “We’ll fill the whole card for the final game and the grand prize.”

Plenty of food options will be available.

“Our volunteers are baking, so we’ll hold a bake sale within the event,” she remarked. “Food for Thought Catering will provide the food, including barbecue sandwiches, macaroni salad, hot dogs, chips, water and soda, all available for purchase.”

A variety of giveaways will also be held, with prizes including an Italian basket; tickets to area attractions, including the Fulton Theatre, Longwood Gardens and Hershey Gardens; and a Precious Paws basket, complete with a cat bed and other items.

“We’ll have our merch table as well,” Kramer said, with succulents and other Precious Paws items for sale. “We also launched a campaign called Hats for Cats, with myself and another volunteer. We crochet hats, and if you buy a hat, you spay a cat. We’ll have some hats for sale at the

Giveaway Event

Colemanville United Methodist Church, 210 Colemanville Church Road, Conestoga, will hold its annual indoor Yard Give on Saturday, March 28, from 8 a.m. to noon.

Clothing, shoes, and small items will be available, and everything will be free of charge. Organizers ask that the items not be taken with the purpose of reselling them at flea markets or other venues. Free light breakfast and lunch fare will also be available. For more information, call the church office at 717-872-7951.

bingo as well.”

Money will also be raised at the bingo through a 50/50 drawing.

All proceeds will benefit Precious Paws Community Cats, a Manheim-based nonprofit Trap-Neuter-Return organization founded by Samantha MacIntyre. The organization works to stabilize and decrease the population of community cats. Additionally, the nonprofit ensures feral cats receive the care and attention they need to stay healthy.

Kramer noted that she has set a $15,000 goal for the bingo fundraiser, and she expects to meet if not exceed it.

All money raised will help in the final stages of opening of a central hub for the organization, which will provide space for pre-surgery and post-surgery staging for cats, a nurturing environment for sick cats to recuperate and secure storage for essential supplies.

The organization held its first bingo last year at a facility in Mount Gretna, where the event

sold out and space was a bit limited. This year, Kramer changed the venue to accommodate twice as many people, although she still encourages purchasing tickets early because she expects the bingo to sell out.

“When you come to our bingo, you’re helping to support our final push to open our cat barn and cross us over the finish line to get up and running,” she said. “We’re very humbled and so grateful for the support we’ve received from the community. We feel our mission continues

to be blessed, and we want to thank people for believing in us and helping the cats. It’s a rough life out there for them, and we want to help in any way we can.”

To purchase tickets for Precious Paws Community Cats bingo, visit the organization’s Facebook page and click on the “Events” tab. There is a discount for purchasing tickets in advance. Tickets will be available at the door if the event is not sold out.

Youth Conservation School Scheduled

The Lancaster County Youth Conservation School will take place from Sunday, July 19, to Friday, July 24, celebrating 47 years of education. The program is open to students ages 14 to 16.

The Lancaster County Conservation District (LCCD) and local sportsmen’s clubs will offer the weeklong summer field school focusing on outdoor activities and the conservation of natural resources. Students will reside at the school with tents and cots to demonstrate low-impact camping at the Northern Lancaster County Fish and Game Protection Association, 180 Forest Road, Denver.

Students will gain knowledge about wildlife and conservation, leadership experience,

and communication skills. Topics will include stream restoration, forestry, canoeing, wildlife management, archery, survival, and firearm safety. Students will have the opportunity to meet professionals in various environmental and conservation-related fields and discuss career options with them.

Ninety percent of the tuition fees are covered by local sportsmen’s clubs and community organizations. Students are responsible for a registration fee upon acceptance to the program.

To receive an application, contact the LCCD at 717-299-5361, ext. 5, or visit www.lancaster conservation.org and look under “Education.” Applications must be submitted by Friday, June 5.

standard arrangement of non-alcoholic beverages,” said Shank. “And then we have two squirrel-themed wineries that have sent us special vintage bottles.”

There is no fee to attend, but Acorn Acres will happily accept donations of supplies, including Tide laundry detergent, bleach, Cascade dishwashing pods, Lysol, and laundry sanitizer. “Formula is going to be the one item that you can’t just buy at a store and bring in,” Shank said. “You’d have to order it on our Amazon wish list. We’re going to go through upwards of about 100 pounds of baby squirrel formula. If people don’t have the supplies, monetary donations are always excellent too.”

Baby shower-themed games will be a highlight of the activities. “We’re going to have a pacifier hunt, kind of like a scavenger hunt, but they have to find the pacifiers,” Shank said.

Guests can purchase a chance to win baskets and

buy items from the gift shop. The Pennsylvania Game Commission will bring its Operation Game Thief trailer. Two wardens will talk about the work that the game commission does. A face painter will be on-site. Twig and Tinker Creative Company created special shirts for the occasion, and it will also sell some of its other items such as note cards and bluebird boxes.

“It’s our busiest time of year,” Shank said. “It’s spring, so everything is coming to life, and all the animals are running around, so we’re getting all of the injured adults in. We’re getting pregnant mamas in. We’re getting newborn babies in, so everything is coming in right now, and it’s a huge push on all of our supplies. And who doesn’t like a baby shower? Then you have a bunch of really cute animals. Let’s mix all of them together and bring our friends in so they can see what we’re doing and shower us with supplies.”

Shank noted that Acorn Acres rehabilitates orphaned, ill, abandoned, and injured prey animals and Virginia opossums. Acorn Acres is typically open by appointment only. Call 717-327-4811 if you encounter an animal that requires care.

“We try to hold three to four community events every year,” she said. “This will be the first big one of this year. We try to have people come into the clinic. People don’t necessarily understand what wildlife rehabilitation is, so if we can bring them in and show them where we work and where their dollars are going when they donate to us, we want to do that. We’re the only facility in the area that allows visitations, and it’s an opportunity for all of our followers and supporters to bring us some of the supplies that we’re going to use in mass quantities in the coming months.”

I learned (the importance of helping others) from my parents.”

Smith is employed as an IT support specialist at R.W. Sauder’s Eggs in Lititz. She’s been volunteering with the nonprofit Susquehanna Valley Team River Runner (SVTRR) for nearly a decade, after being introduced to the sport of whitewater kayaking.

“I got involved with whitewater kayaking, and a year after I started, I heard about (SVTRR),” said Smith. “I started falling in love with the sport, the community, the people and everything about it. Growing up, I had some jobs in special education and working with kids. I volunteered at the Humane League when I was younger, helped walk dogs and take care of animals. I was very intrigued by the idea of rehabilitating people. That caught my eye.”

Based in Harrisburg, SVTRR is

a local branch of a national organization that assists veterans, some of whom are experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and individuals with disabilities, including blindness, many of whom reside in Lancaster County. Water sports and paddle sports are just two of the tools that SVTRR employs to socially support the nearly 300 participants and encourage active and healthy lifestyles.

Some of SVTRR’s good work is performed on the Conestoga River and in the pool at the YMCA of the Roses, 265 Harrisburg Ave., Lancaster.

“When I volunteer, I feel excited and proud,” said Smith. “I feel really excited because I want to share in (participants’) joy, like, ‘I did this thing.’ You encourage them. But they encourage me as well.”

about 30 hours a month. One of her volunteer duties involves serving as a guide for in-water participants, some of whom are legally blind.

“It’s been like the best experience,” said Smith. “We all have safety-water training. Working with all of (the participants) has been so life changing. We’re there to help them be the best that they can be. My challenges are nothing compared to what they have on a daily basis.”

Through her involvement in water sports and SVTRR, Smith met and befriended the organization’s coordinator, Jen Eaton, and the man Smith says has become the love of her life, Greg Spath, who also volunteers with SVTRR.

“We’re all like Susquehanna Valley Team River family,” said Smith. “I’ve made long-lasting friendships. Jen is like one of my ducklings, so I guard her and protect her, and I do that for all of (the participants). Jen’s such an inspiring person, and I gravitate toward that. Being out in nature, you get to see so many things most people don’t get to see. The people I’m with are so grateful to be there.”

During the month of March, SVTRR is partnering with City Center YMCA of the Roses to sponsor a “Stuff the Kayak” clothing drive for local nonprofit CommunityAid. New or gently used clothing can be dropped off at the lobby of YMCA of the Roses during hours of operation, Mondays through Thursdays from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., Fridays from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. For additional information, go to www.svtrr.org.

Community Egg Hunt

Planned

Conestoga United Methodist Church, 71 Sand Hill Road, Conestoga, will hold a community egg hunt on Saturday, March 28, at 10 a.m.

Children from preschool through grade six are invited to participate in the egg hunt. The event is dedicated to the German immigrants who brought their Easter customs with them to America. The egg hunt is sponsored by America250 and is part of the 170th anniversary of the church.
