School Vows to Help Young Students, Families
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
Catherine Hershey Schools for Early Learning (CHS) is not designed only to benefit young students.
The mission is to assist the entire family with a “two-generation approach,” said Jessica Bailey, the director of the CHS New Danville Center, which is slated to open this summer.
It is primarily for students in the Solanco, Lampeter-Strasburg, and Penn Manor school districts.
“Our program does identify school districts that we prioritize that are near to each site,” said Bailey.
“And the goal is that families not just go to school or live in the area, but they could be getting an education in the area themselves or just working in the area to qualify for a program. Those are the three school districts that we focus on.”
The New Danville Center, located at 393 Long Lane, Lancaster, is accepting applications. Catherine

Hershey Schools are for students between the ages of 6 weeks old and 5 years old and operate yearround. Go to www.chslearn.org to register or for more information.
“We’re considered an early childhood education facility,” Bailey said, noting that the New Danville location is hoping to welcome 100 students from low-income or
underresourced families. “We really look to support families to make sure that they are thriving when they leave our program. Our big goal and our big mission is to help the entire family. Not only do we provide that early childhood education and care for students during the day, but we’re also providing support for our families, (finding)

The event will be held Thursday, March 26, at the DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Hotel Lancaster, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.; dinner will start at 6 p.m. and will feature a sit-down, plated meal.

Poverty, certifications, education, language skills, self-enrichment.
All of those concepts and their implications are related and interrelated. All of those concepts and implications are relevant and intersect at the Literacy Council of Lancaster-Lebanon.
“I would add health to that list,” said Cheryl Hiester, who’s been the executive director of the Literacy
Council of Lancaster-Lebanon for 18 years. “There’s a correlation between literacy and health. The ability to read and write English and fully participate in today’s world can impact every single aspect of an adult’s life. You can’t be fully engaged in your child’s education if you don’t have those skills. Those are significant barriers.”
The Literacy Council of Lancaster-Lebanon, which is located at 407 Lafayette St., Lancaster, is

Items up for bid will include a weeklong stay at a cottage in Ecuador; a weekend at an Airbnb near Elizabethtown; works by local artists and themed baskets such as a reader’s basket donated by Advoz’s Restorative Justice Book Club, a Family Movie Night basket, and a Bird Lovers basket including two handmade birdhouses.
“We are a local organization, 501(c)(3) nonprofit, serving primarily Lancaster County with services in conflict resolution, mediation services, restorative justice services, and training,” executive director Krista Rittenhouse said. “One of the ways we describe it is helping people navigate through critical moments in their lives.”
She went on to list the variety of services Advoz provides. “We support folks through mediation, through divorce and

resources for them to help families set goals, and to really support them to be in a position where they are making the most out of all that they can.”
No closing date for applications has been established. “We do work through our application process here in the start of the new year,” Bailey said. “We’re accepting applications for our families, and we’d love to be able to see families all throughout our three districts applying. Once they fill out their application, we will be connecting with them and following through with the process until we’ve been able to determine the appropriate amount of students to be able to fill our building.”

Bailey stated that the application process is straightforward. “There’s an online registration where we would ask for some information that
comes to our admissions department,” she said.
“From there, we would reach out with phone calls and connections in person to be able to make sure we have the most up-to-date, most accurate information to be able to make the best decision for our families. Since we do have to make certain qualifications, we do make sure we really have those deep conversations with families to ensure our process is just.”
Catherine Hershey Schools is a nonprofit organization and a subsidiary of the Milton Hershey School. “That’s part of where we come from and the long line and legacy of the Hersheys and all that they created,” Bailey said. “A lot of people aren’t familiar with the fact that Milton Hershey owned a candy company here in Lancaster. That’s part of the reason we’ve opened in Dauphin County, and Lancaster is really to
Wrestling Event Set
Three Legacies Wrestling (3LW) will present “Limitless” on Saturday, Feb. 28, at Ville Courts at Millersville University, 108 Shenks Lane, Millersville. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., with a breakthrough match at 6:40 p.m. and the main card at

build on the heritage and the legacy that both Milton and Catherine left in those areas. It’s exciting to be able to do that.”
The New Danville location will be the fourth Catherine Hershey School and the first in Lancaster County with more to follow.
“Currently we have three operational centers in Dauphin County,” said Bailey. “Our first to open was in Hershey, the second was in Harrisburg, and our third one opened just this year in Middletown. We have our first site in Lancaster, us here in New Danville, and then following us will be a site in Elizabethtown and a site in Lancaster city, hopefully by 2027.”
Bailey stated that Catherine Hershey Schools’ subject matter is a draw “We focus on a play-based curriculum,” she said. “Kids need play at this age, and we all hear in the education world how that trickle-down
effect of development and skills has an effect on our youngest generation. We really focus on that playbased (curriculum), leaning into children’s interests and creating projects that are meaningful to them that they can explore throughout their time here.”
A key objective is preparing students for the rest of their schooling.
“Our goal is to get them ready for kindergarten, and ‘ready’ for each child is a little bit different,” said Bailey. “Some children are ready and raring to go with more information, and some kiddos just need to learn how to exist in their own beautiful space. We have the opportunity to build and create that and really support the children individually and also make sure the families know how to support their children individually, which is really a key part too.”

custody mediation, which is a really tough transition for families to go through,” said Rittenhouse. “We can help find communication patterns that can have people advocate for what is most important to them. That’s one of the ways that we serve the community. Another way is through our restorative justice program for young people involved in the criminal legal system,”
She explained how that process works. “We receive referrals from juvenile justice for young folks who have gotten in trouble with the law, and we do the victim offender conferencing program,” said Rittenhouse. “We have conversations with the young person. We have conversations with the victim. If everyone agrees, we bring them together for a face-toface dialogue around what accountability means, how do we make things right when we mess up, because the reality is we’re going to mess up as humans.”
She added that the group also trains clients. “We want people to have more skills to engage proactively in constructive conflict on their own as well,” Rittenhouse said.
Anyone who would like to avail themselves of Advoz’s services can go to www .advoz.org and click on the
“Request Service” button at the top right corner of the page.
During the dinner, clients will provide anecdotal evidence of what Advoz can accomplish. “People should come to the auction if they want to support our work, and people should come to the auction if they are interested in hearing stories of reconciliation and healing,” Rittenhouse said. “I think that in a day and age where we have increased polarization and increased sensitivity across different ideologies and ways of living, we need to hear stories of folks that are connecting across differences. We need to hear stories of bridge-building. They help us to imagine new ways of being together, and our event is going to highlight stories from participants. ... I think that it will be a day of encouragement and good news that counteracts so much of the division that is present in our world.”
Rittenhouse is hopeful that hearing the accounts will encourage guests to keep contributing. “We do much of our work through volunteers,” she said. “If someone is interested in getting involved, this would be a great way to understand the work of our highly trained, community volunteers.”

dedicated to enriching lives and helping individuals reach their full potential through adult education. Not only does the local nonprofit promote the concept of lifelong learning, it embraces it.
“We’re an agency who serves adults,” said Hiester. “They come to us to improve their basic skills. For many, they’re people who are new to the county and need to learn English. Anything you would’ve done in public education as a kid and didn’t get to do, you can do with us. We meet our clients where they are to make sure our instruction is meeting their needs, so they can take the next steps in their lives.”
The Literacy Council of Lancaster-Lebanon, which works closely with Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13, provides instruction in basic education skills like reading, writing, math, social studies and science and prepares students to acquire high school equivalency certifications. The Literacy Council also offers a digital literacy program to help novices navigate the technology world and an international health care professionals’ program, which helps immigrant professionals like doctors and nurses obtain the skills and licenses required to practice medicine here.
The Literacy Council does not provide job training, but the organization does provide educational support for individuals preparing for job training and higher forms of education.
“There are a lot of people in the community who don’t have their high school diplomas,” said Hiester, a resident of Mount Joy.
“The career awareness gives people an opportunity to learn about the opportunities available to them. Some employers require high school credentials to hire individuals. If you want to go on to higher education, you need that credential. Others may want to show their children the importance of education. Most people don’t drop out of school on purpose.”
The Literacy Council of Lancaster-Lebanon is currently serving about 500 individuals in its service area, but there are an estimated 120,000 residents who could benefit from the organization’s programs. Participants must be age 18 or older and live in either of the two counties, and they can’t be enrolled in school.
“They are people who want to improve their lives through education,” said Hiester. “They want to get better jobs. They want to continue their educations. They want to improve their credentials or Americanize their educations.
Thirty-five percent of the students we serve have a diploma. The people who come to us are a diverse group.”
Hiester said that there are currently 55,987 working-age adults living in Lancaster County who do not possess a high school diploma. About 22% of Lancaster County’s 380,144 adult residents or 83,631 individuals are functioning at or below Level 1 literacy.
Hiester also said that, on the average, 100 hours of adult education corresponds to about $9,621 a year in employee income.
“Some of our students are living in homes with a large amount of stress,” said Hiester. “Families living in poverty might move frequently. There may be behavioral health issues that make it difficult to complete educations. There are a lot of people living in Lancaster County who came here as refugees and didn’t learn English. Every person has their own journey and experiences. We’re here to help them reach their goals.”
The Literacy Council of Lancaster-Lebanon, which was founded in 1985, employs 20 workers, some of whom are teachers and tutors. The organization also benefits from the service of volunteer instructors.
The Literacy Council

is funded through state and federal resources provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, grants from local foundations, resources from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, fundraising events and the efforts of the United Way of Lebanon County.
“One of our big fears is that the federal funding is at risk,” said Hiester. “That funding is the backbone of adult literacy and education. I want people to feel inspired to help. I want people to advocate for people struggling with these skills.”

Millersville University Posts Conference
Millersville University’s annual Conference on the Holocaust and Genocide will celebrate its 41st year with two free events centered on the theme “Translating Trauma Into Literature and Performing Arts.”
The conference’s first event, “Translating Zuzanna Ginczanka,” will be a panel discussion and poetry reading at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3, in Myers Auditorium at McComsey Hall. Sponsored in part by the Jewish Community Alliance of Lancaster, the event will feature the poetry of Zuzanna Ginczanka, a Polish-Jewish poet who was executed by the Nazis at the age of 27 in 1944.
Translators Joanna Trzeciak Huss, Mira Rosenthal, and Alex Braslavsky will share English versions of her poems and discuss the challenges of bringing this unique voice to American audiences.
Ginczanka was born in Kiev in 1917, and she and her family fled shortly after the Russian Revolution to a border town in present-day Ukraine. Ginczanka later moved to Warsaw, where she published her only collection of poetry, “On Centaurs.”
Before the panel, Huss will lead a teachers’ work-
shop about teaching Holocaust poetry in translation. Huss is an acclaimed scholar and translator.
The second event will be the P. Alan and Linda Loss Keynote Lecture at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 19, in Biemesderfer Concert Hall at the Winter Center. Tonyand Emmy-nominated director and playwright Moises Kaufman will discuss his award-winning play “Here There Are Blueberries” as a form of translation of Holocaust history.
During the keynote presentation, which will be a dialogue with Kaufman, there will be dramatic readings excerpted from the play and performed by Millersville University students. Those scenes will include the projection of photographic images accompanying the text. Kaufman is a Venezuelan-Jewish American theater director, playwright, filmmaker, founder of Tectonic Theater Project based in New York City, and co-founder of Miami New Drama at the Colony Theatre. He was awarded the 2016 National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama, and his work was represented earlier this year at Millersville with its production of “The Laramie Project.”
