Servants Inc. Comes To Lancaster BY ANN MEAD ASH

Local Youths Honored At Irish Dance Competition n Thanksgiving weekend, as many families were celebrating over a traditional feast and spending time with loved ones, thousands of dancers from Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Delaware were headed to downtown Philadelphia for the annual Mid-Atlantic Regional Irish Dance Championships. This year, the Paloma School of Irish Dance sent 32 competitors, two of whom won the title of Regional Champion. Two others were fourth and fifth in their competitions as well. Jase Lawrence of Conestoga won the Boys’ Under 8 Championship, qualifying him for the National Championships this year in
19 Championship, qualifying him for two more events: the National Championships in Montreal and the 2022 World Championships in Belfast, Ireland. Now age 19, Malakye began dancing at age 8 and inspired the rest of his siblings to dance. Now, five of his eight siblings take classes at the Paloma School of Irish Dance. Malakye is a freshman at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, and his dream is to dance professionally and become a writer. He enjoys teaching young dancers and has performed regularly with the Paloma Performance Troupe as a lead dancer. Malakye qualified for the World Championships in 2019 and
2021, although the event was canceled both years due to COVID. He placed ninth at the American National Championships this year in Phoenix. Aiden Ketner, an eighth-grader in the Manheim Township School District, placed fourth in the Boys’ Under 14 division. This placement qualifies him for the National Championships and the World Championships. Since the pandemic began, Aiden rose to the challenge of learning new choreography remotely over Zoom. Despite this adjustment, Aiden now dances at the championship level. In the future, he hopes to dance professionally and own his own Irish dance studio. See Irish Dance pg 2

Around 2000, Trent Davis, founder and CEO of Servants Inc., took a mission trip to Guatemala. The trip changed the direction of his life. “(Trent) felt a call to continue relationships and give others opportunity to have that experience,” said Keith Cotton, director of outreach with Servants. Cotton noted that Davis coordinated mission trips and worked with missionaries in Guatemala under a program he called SARF (Serving At Risk Families), which also included home repair and construction work. Fast forward to 2005, when Hurricane Katrina inspired Davis to do home repair work stateside. “(Trent) responded with the same base of volunteers, and that’s how the disaster recovery branch started,” said Cotton, who noted that flooding in York County in 2010 really brought home the

Boys’ Tennis Sets Tryouts Preseason tryouts for the Penn Manor High School boys’ tennis team will begin on Monday, March 7, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at Manor Middle School, 2950 Charlestown Road, Lancaster. Students in grades nine through 12 from Penn Manor or Stone Independent School are eligible to try out. Players must have their own racket. Practices will be held on weekdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

Liam Snodgress, a seventh-grader at Manheim Township Middle School, placed fifth in the Boys’ Under 13 division. Liam only entered the championship level in February 2021 and achieved a 17th-place finish at the National Championships in Phoenix in July 2021. Community Grant Program Opens The Junior League of Lancaster Inc. (JLL) will accept applications for its 2021-22 Community Grant Program. This program seeks to further JLL’s current initiative, increasing educational and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) for girls and other youths who have been historically underrepresented in these fields. This year, the JLL will make grants of $1,250 to Lancaster County STEM nonprofit organizations for the purpose of hiring McCaskey High School students for paid summer internships with their organi-
zations. The grants will go toward the salary or stipend that the student receives for his or her work. All applications must be received before Friday, April 1. Manor used a full court press and a 1-3-1 zone defense to stifle the Eagles and earned a dominating 59-26 victory in Millersville. “I was happy that we were able to be focused and get the job done,” said head coach Megan Collins. “Our starters did a great job in securing a
big lead early on, which allowed us to play a nine-person rotation.” Morgan Miller, who bucketed a team-high 20 points, netted seven in an 11-4 first quarter lead. Manor forced five turnovers in the first three minutes of the second quarter and pulled away for a 30-11 lead at the break. Kamia Gordley and Lily Sugra combined for 15 of Manor’s 19 points. The domination continued through the second half as the hosts dropped another 19 points, pushing out to a 49-22 lead and finished with a 10-4 fourth quarter. Sugra finished with 15 points, Goodley and Emily Riggs scored eight points each and Sydney Shepos and Riley Peart added 6 and 2 respectively to round out the scoring. “Two of our three losses are to teams that are still undefeated,” noted Collins. “We got down early in those games but fought hard to get back in it. I commend their heart and
effort. Our goal moving forward is to not have to come from behind. We want to hold on to leads in close games at the end when we have them,” she continued. “I think if we play hard and give it all we have each and every day, we will be proud of the results.” The Comets moved to 3-1 in Section One with a convincing 51-31 win over Manheim Township last Wednesday. After a tight 9-7 first quarter lead, the Comets pulled away with a 15-5 second quarter and outscored the visitors 27-19 after the break. Sugra pumped in a game-high 19 with seven coming in the second quarter and Miller hit double figures as well, knocking down four triples to finish with 16. Goodley (9) and Shepos (7) also chipped in as the Comets defeated the Streaks for the first time in over four years. The local Civil Air Patrol squadron at Lancaster Municipal Airport has announced that it will not hold its regular Monday night meetings out of concerns related to COVID19. Instead, the squadron will resume virtual cadet meetings. The edict to not meet in person will remain in effect until further notice. The Pennsylvania Foundation for Home Care and Hospice announced the launch of its Home Care Grant program. The program was developed to support home-based care agencies in providing temporary care to individuals who demonstrate a need for home- and community-based services but are not yet receiving or eligible for services through other payment programs, such as Medicaid. It will provide up to $1,200 per consumer which can be used as 50 hours of non-medical home care services or 12 skilled home health visits.

The Pennsylvania Foundation for Home Care and Hospice will continue to seek funding to support and expand the program. Giant Donates Hams To Local Food Banks Just in time for the holidays, the Giant Company donated 3,000 hams to 14 partner food banks and food pantries during December 2021. Hams were donated across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia, bringing the company’s brand platform, For Today’s Table, to life by contributing a holiday staple to families in need. Hams were donated to the following local hunger relief partners: Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Harrisburg; Chester County Food Bank, Exton; Columbia Food Bank, Columbia; Helping Harvest Fresh Food Bank, Reading; and York County Food Bank, York. In addition to the donations, Giant Company team members volunteered at food banks and
pantries packing hunger relief boxes and organizing and restocking shelves during the busy holiday season. Customers were invited to join the Giant Company in making a difference this holiday season. At any Giant, Martin’s or Giant Heirloom Market store, customers were invited to round up their purchase at checkout to benefit their local food bank or pantry. From Dec. 10 through Dec. 24, 2021, customers were also given an opportunity to donate free ham certificates at the register instore or donate 400 CHOICE points online, for which Giant made a $10 donation to a local food bank. Customers were also able to purchase reusable bags to benefit Feeding America.

Zombie Fun Run Benefits Breast Cancer Coalition The haunted attraction Field of Screams hosted its ninth annual Zombie Fun Run 5K on Nov. 13, 2021, with proceeds benefiting the PA Breast Cancer Coalition (PBCC). The Field of Screams donation will support the PBCC’s programs and services, including personalized patient advocacy, the free Friends Like Me Care Package program and the PBCC Research Grants Initiative. To date, Field of Screams has
contributed more than $53,000 to the PBCC. Participants in the Zombie Fun Run experienced the thrills of being chased by zombies on a 5K course through the Field of Screams. Participants raced through mud, crawled and climbed over more than 40 obstacles and jumped through fire, all while being surrounded by movie quality scenes. Some registrants even chose to act as zombies in the showdown of runners versus
