Christmas Tree Mulching Program Posted
Teacher Of The Year BY COURTNEY MENGEL
lizabeth Raff, a sixth-grade teacher at Pequea Elementary School, was named the Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year for 2022. Elizabeth was selected from 12 finalists who participated in the Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year Conference, which was held in Hershey from Dec. 5 to 7. Two previous Teacher of the Year nominees, Jeff Kuntz of Punxsutawney Area School District and Maria Vita, a Penn Manor High School psychology teacher who was a finalist for the 2019 award, nominated Elizabeth for the state award. As Teacher of the Year, Elizabeth will represent teachers at the state level by speaking at conferences, leading workshops and professional development sessions, as well as visiting school districts, colleges, and universities across Pennsylvania. She also will be a candidate for the National Teacher of the Year Award. As part of her teaching style, Elizabeth encourages movement among her students and leads them through physical exercises that help them understand parts of speech, vocabulary words, and other lessons. “She really helps us to understand everything by answering our questions and she gives us ways to remember things for a test,” said sixth-grader Ashlyn Brenneman. “She’s a great teacher and I think she definitely deserves the award because not everybody knows how great of a teacher she is.” Elizabeth lives in Lancaster Township with her husband, Jeremy, and their son, Owen. They are expecting an addition to their family in March. Prior to teaching at Pequea Elementary School, Elizabeth taught in Philadelphia for two years. She earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Messiah College and her master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Penn State University. She is currently working toward her principal certification through Penn State.

County residents can dispose of their Christmas trees in an environmentally friendly way by dropping them at the Lancaster County Central Park mulching site between dawn and dusk through Monday, Jan. 31. The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags and hardware, including nails in the trunk. There is a three-tree limit per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations. There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will go toward the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the county park system. See Tree Mulching pg 3

“What I love about teaching is to be able see learning come alive in students,” said Elizabeth. “We see those moments where connections are made and new perspectives are brought to the table, and so to be able to witness and to facilitate new ideas that students have never heard of before or dig into a book they’ve never experienced … that’s what really excites me.” Penn Manor School District welcomed back Elizabeth with a marching band, cheerleaders, and speeches from her past students. “It was just overwhelming with so much love and appreciation, and I just really am so grateful for it,” commented Elizabeth. “I also feel like all teachers should have an assembly because they’ve all been through so much over the last two years and so my goal moving forward is to really celebrate all teachers across Pennsylvania and really remind them of the incredible work that they’re doing and to lift them up.”

Members at both YMCAs will automatically become members of the new association in the same category as they were before the merger. There will be no significant changes to each YMCA’s programming or facilities, but both associations are adjusting their pricing models to establish consistency in the new association. Certain operations will be streamlined, such as timing of programs and online communications so that the merged YMCA can more efficiently serve residents in both counties. The YMCA of the Roses will keep its staffing structure largely the same. Larry M. Richardson, who has been the president/CEO of the YMCA of York and York County for over 27 years and the acting president/CEO of the Lancaster Family YMCA since September 2020, will serve as the merged YMCA’s president/CEO. In each county, a director of operations will oversee the day-to-day activities of the branch. A single corporate office will manage both counties. The YMCA of the Roses will conduct centralized fundraising activities, but ensure that past, present, and future restricted funds are used for their intended purpose and align with the donor’s intent. an opportunity to continue serving with the new organization in some capacity. The YMCA of the Roses’ board of directors will be made up of volunteer leadership from both counties as will the various other committees related to overall operations of the merged YMCA. Local committees will ensure that each area’s operations are appropriate and relevant for their respective communities. Direct service volunteers, such as ones from United Way initiatives, will continue to have opportunities to serve their local YMCA. The merged YMCA of the Roses will run five branches and five pools across both counties in rural, suburban, and urban communities. It will have a combined operating budget of about $15 million and over 500 employees, and it will serve over 30,000 members a year. YMCA of the Roses will work with over 1,500 volunteers for a combined 20,000 service hours and give out over $2 million in financial assistance so everyone can afford a YMCA membership. YMCA of the Roses will have an office for a New American Welcome Center in each county so that newcomers to the area can access YMCA resources. Its free or low-cost child development programs will serve 600 children. Summer camp in five locations across both counties, including financial assistance, will work to ensure that all the community’s children can go to camp. The organization’s leadership will continually evaluate community issues and resources so that it can implement charitable programs to meet the region’s new and emerging needs. The Lancaster Family YMCA and the YMCA of York and York County merged into a single YMCA association the YMCA of the Roses effective Dec. 1. The merger is intended to ensure the region has access to high-quality YMCA programming and allow the YMCAs in York and Lancaster to be more efficient stewards of the areas’ resources. On Sept. 1, 2020, the Lancaster Family YMCA and the YMCA of York and York County entered into a management agreement so that the York organization could provide CEO and human resource services to the Lancaster organization. Since then, the two associations have deepened their partnership by sharing staff, services, and programs. Both YMCAs’ leadership voted to move forward with a merger process, establishing a Merger Task Force, including representatives from each YMCA and the Pennsylvania State Alliance of YMCAs, along with the York and Lancaster YMCA president/CEO. The task force conducted due diligence in the areas of property/risk/insurance, program and membership, governance, human resources, and finance, and it developed a formal plan of merger, which was approved by both boards and members.

CROP Walk Raises Funds For Hunger Relief The 2021 Solanco CROP Walk took place at Muddy Run Park in Holtwood on Oct. 16. Before the walk, participants had opportunities to take photos with posters that said, “I am helping to ‘beet’ hunger and ‘squash’ poverty around the block and around the world!” There were 73 participants, including some virtual walkers, representing 13 community churches and organiza-
tions. They took a 5-mile walk through Muddy Run, and refreshments were served before and after the walk. The final fundraising total was more than $17,078 - the third-highest amount raised in the 41 years of the Solanco CROP Walk. Seventy-five percent of the funds raised were to go to Church World Service, and 25% were to be directed to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries.

Moss, a former professor at Franklin & Marshall College and a founding member of the Lancaster Environmental Action Federation (LEAF), worked to promote the conservation of natural resources for the improvement of the environment of Lancaster County’s public parks and open spaces. In 2000, LEAF donated funds to the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation for the creation of a nursery in memory of Moss. According to park officials, residents drop off approximately 1,000 Christmas trees each year, which produce 15 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and
azaleas and for many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be available to residents on a first-come, firstserved basis after Thursday, Jan. 6, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home. The Lancaster Medical Society Foundation, a foundation of the Lancaster City and County Medical Society, recently awarded its 2021 scholarships to Sonia Hafiz, Sarah Hafiz, and Madison Morgan of Lancaster and Kiernan McNelis of Lititz. The recipients were selected through a competitive review process with submissions from applicants throughout Lancaster County. Sonia, a graduate of Franklin & Marshall College and a first-year medical student at the Pennsylvania State College of Medicine, was awarded $4,500. She shared
that her volunteer experiences, both in a local hospital and at a refugee camp abroad, led her to her planned career path. Sarah, an ophthalmic technician and Franklin & Marshall College graduate, currently in her first year at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, received a $3,500 award. She explained that her interest in the combination of advocacy for vulnerable populations and scientific discovery was piqued in high school through her volunteer efforts with pediatric cancer patients and her work with Syrian refugees. Morgan and McNelis
were both awarded $2,000 scholarships. Morgan is a former trauma research coordinator, a graduate of the University of Tampa, and a first-year medical student at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. She shared that her decision to pursue a career in medicine was ignited by her own health issue in high school. McNelis, a clinical research coordinator and graduate of Villanova University, is an incoming first-year student at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. Her passion for medicine was fostered
through her experience in both volunteer and professional roles. Founded in 1991, the Lancaster Medical Society Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was formed to grant scholarships to students from Lancaster County who are accepted at or continuing a medical degree at an accredited allopathic or osteopathic medical school. Scholarship recipients must exemplify good character, motivation, academic achievement, and financial need. Since the foundation’s inception, more than $268,000 in scholarships has been given to local students.

Doughnuts and pierogies are among the potato-based foods to be available at the Pennsylvania Farm Show.
Attendees of 106th Pennsylvania Farm Show may celebrate the centennial of the Pennsylvania Co-Operative Potato Growers and enjoy local potato products, including in the PA Preferred Food Court and at the Farmer’s Market in the Main Expo Hall. The Farm Show will take place from Saturday, Jan. 8, to Saturday, Jan. 15, at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center, 2300 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg. The PA Preferred Food Court in the GIANT Expo Hall will also be open from noon to 9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 7. “The Co-Operative is excited to be back in person at this year’s show with our Pennsylvania Farm Show traditions such as the state’s favorite potato doughnuts, fresh cut french fries, and delicious baked potatoes,” said Nathan Tallman, executive director of the Pennsylvania Co-Operative Potato Growers Inc. “For the first time, we are offering sour cream, cheddar cheese, and bacon as toppings for the famed baked potatoes. Potato Fare from pg 6 The Co-Operative will again be featured in the Pennsylvania Farm Show Farmer’s Market as part of the Pennsylvania Farm Show. The market highlights a variety of agricultural products for visitors to sample. The market stands, located in the Main Expo Hall of the complex, will be open beginning Jan. 8 and will operate throughout the entire show. “ Visitors will have the opportunity to meet and talk with our local potato growers at the stand, as well as the younger visitors can participate in a hands-on potato activity and see in person a real potato plant growing,” added Tallman.
The potato doughnuts, french fries, and baked potatoes can be enjoyed by stopping at the PA Preferred Food Court and the Food Annex in the Main Expo Hall, while the potato pierogies will only be available at the PA Preferred Food Court. Visitors can also learn different ways to prepare potatoes at the Culinary Connection Stage in the Main Expo Hall during Tater Tuesday on Jan. 11. After each cooking demonstration, visitors will be able to taste samples and pick up a free PA Preferred cookbook, which includes recipes to be featured throughout the Farm Show week.

The station was owned then by Joy Broadcasting, a company that operated stations across the country. “They named their stations for their locations, so ‘JTL’ was ‘Joy to Lancaster,’” McNaughton said. W hen Joy Broadcasting wanted to sell the station in 1990, Tim Landis, who founded the nonprofit Creative Ministries, mounted a campaign to save the station. Creative Ministries purchased WJTL in 1991 and continues to operate it today. After a stint in a building behind Friendly’s on Oregon Pike in Lancaster, WJTL moved to its current location in 2011. On Saturdays from 9 p.m. to midnight, The Archives spotlights what McNaughton calls “early Jesus music from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s.” On Fridays and Saturdays, WJTL features “Some Sort of Rock Show,” which McNaughton deems “the louder side of WJTL,” and Kristi Leigh offers a Sunday morning praise and worship program. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the station invites nonprofit organizations to the studio to share their mission with listeners. In addition to running WJTL, McNaughton is a morning DJ
on the station. “I get up at 3 a.m. to come to work, and I still get up every day excited to be on the radio,” he said. His passion for Christian music began as a youth when he started buying 99-cent records at the Christian Light bookstore in Elizabethtown. “This music and these musicians were speaking a language I identified with, and it was a style of music that showed me the kind of life I wanted to live,” he said. That’s what he hopes WJTL continues to do every day for its listeners. “Radio is there for people. It’s such a personal medium, and it’s about relationships and connection with people,” he commented. “So many listeners tell us they feel that a song was played just for them. Environmental Program Seeks Applicants The Penn State Extension Dauphin, Lancaster, and Lebanon offices will accept applications for the 2022 Master Watershed Steward Program. The program is designed to provide people who are enthusiastic about the environment with the information and skills necessary to share their experience and
knowledge with others. Master Watershed Stewards receive 40 hours of training on a variety of topics, including water quality, stream health, native plants, recreational resources, and groundwater. This spring’s training will be held virtually via Zoom on Thursdays, March 10 to June 9, at 6:30 p.m. Optional
in-person field experiences will be scheduled with COVID-19 safety measures in place. After completing the training session, students fulfill 50 hours of volunteer service.
