GENEALOGY WORKSHOP
Oxford Area Senior Center, 12 E. Locust St., Oxford, will present a genealogy research workshop led by genealogist Kristine Parkes on Wednesday, Aug. 29, from 7 to 9 p.m. Parkes will be available to help participants research their family history and also share some of her experiences. Family Hosts Visitor As Part Of Fresh Air Fund Program By Marcella Peyre-Ferry
Tom and Shirley Herr make a practice of opening their farm each summer for a visitor from New York City. For the third year, Shyan McIntosh of the Queens area of New York has come to the Herrs’ Oxford farm for a weeklong visit through the Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program. Shyan, 11, arrived on July 13 and stayed with the Herr family through July 20. She fit right in with the family, which includes sons Philip and Thomas Jr. and daughters Gracie and Marybeth. “We wanted to have a girl (visit) because the girls were at home (to) play with Shyan,” Shirley said, noting that that Philip and Thomas Jr., who are now ages 18 and 17, respectively, were away working most of the day. The three girls are close in age, and
they have developed a deep friendship over the years. During Shyan’s visit, they rode horses, played board games, made craft projects, ate pizza and enjoyed a dairy’s company picnic, which included a fireworks display. Shyan attended church with the Herrs at Nottingham Missionary Baptist Church, and she shared in some of the chores around the dairy farm. In past years, she has joined the Herr daughters in the church youth group and taken part in family parties. Last year, one of the most memorable moments for Shyan was getting to watch the birth of a calf that was then named after her. Her favorite thing to do, however, was to enjoy the swing on the family’s property and relax. She also is very interested in gardening and growing flowers.

Chester County Sets 4-H Fair

Twelve-year-old Ashley Flynn of Oxford earned her way to the Team Competition level of the Pitch, Hit & Run competition, ultimately placing second in her age group at Citizens Bank Park, home stadium of the Philadelphia Phillies, on June 30. Ashley is a member of the Oxford Diamond Divas softball team and has been playing softball since she was about 6 years old. She generally plays catcher, but she is also a utility player, filling in at different positions as needed. Last year, Ashley entered the first Pitch, Hit & Run competition hosted by the Oxford Area Recreation Authority (OARA) at the Oxford Regional Park. Although she did not place high enough to move on to the next level, she learned where she needed to improve. See Pitch, Hit & Run pg 6

An outdoor movie will be shown on the lawn at 8:15 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 10. Refreshments will be provided. In the case of inclement weather, the movie will be held indoors. Ice cream, milkshakes and other refreshments will be available for sale throughout the week. During live animal shows, 4-Hers will demonstrate their skills in the handling and care of farm animals, including beef cattle, dairy cows, breeding sheep, market lambs, swine, goats and horses. Aug. 6 will include a public speaking and presentation contest at 1 p.m., along with goat, sheep and beef shows throughout the day. On Tuesday, Aug. 7, starting at 10 a.m., free tours will be provided for the public and will include hands-on activities for children. Those interested in participating in a tour are asked to contact Toni Stuetz, extension educator, at 610-696-3500 to sign up in advance. Other highlights on Aug. 7 will include a swine showmanship clinic and livestock “skillathons.” “(During the skillathon), they identify feeds, equipment and answer questions about livestock production,” said Jesse Sargent, administrative support coordinator for Penn State Extension, Chester County. “It’s basically testing their skill levels in those areas.” The public is invited to meet 4-H staff members from the extension office in Chester County during an open house on Wednesday, Aug. 8, from 4 to 6 p.m. The Chester County Spirit of 4-H Award will also be presented on Aug. 8 at approximately 5:30 p.m. “The (recipient of the) award will be a surprise,” Sargent noted. Last year’s winner was Katherine Toliver, a member of
the Gum Tree 4-H Horse Club. “A slideshow will be playing during the open house that will highlight all of the programming that has been done by the (Penn State) educators throughout the year, not just 4-H,” Sargent noted. A livestock sale of beef, sheep, goats and swine will highlight the animal events on Aug. 8 starting at 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, will feature a robotics contest, and Friday, Aug. 10, will include a dairy show. Fair week will wrap up with the 4-H Horse Show on Aug. 11 beginning at 8 a.m. The project displays will be open until noon. 4-H is a national youth development program for children and youths ages 8 to 18. Clubs meet at local homes, schools, churches or community centers and are guided by experienced adult volunteers using educational projects designed especially for 4-H clubs. Among the clubs are dairy clubs that focus on teaching members about dairy cattle; dairy goat clubs; horse clubs, where members do not have to own their own horse to participate; small animal clubs; robotics/engineering science clubs and Junior Master Gardening clubs. There are also special interest programs that are available during the summer months. More than 5,000 young people take part in the Chester County youth leadership 4-H program, which stands for Head, Heart, Hand and Health. Worshipful Wednesdays, a weekly program that features dinner, outdoor worship and a time of fellowship, will continue through Aug. 29 at Calvary Lutheran Church, 730 S. New St., West Chester. The outdoor worship events, which began on June 6, are held in a field located next to the church. The area is shaded, and chairs are provided for visitors. In the event of rainy weather, the
service is moved indoors. “Attendance has been great,� said Kara Butler, a member of the church’s hospitality committee. “It’s been a good mix of (congregation) members and visitors. And we have been lucky with the weather.� Each Worshipful Wednesday begins with dinner served by church members at 5:45 p.m. “Weather permitting, we have dinner outside,� said Butler. “It’s hot dogs and hamburgers, chips, salads and (beverages).�

As fans still celebrate the championship victory of the Philadelphia Eagles, Man to Man, the men’s ministry group at Hopewell United Methodist Church (UMC), in Downingtown, will present “Tailgate With Author Josh Cooley� on Monday, Aug. 6, at 7 p.m. Cooley is the author of “The Biggest Win,� a book that details the lives and faith of six Eagles players on the championship team, including Carson Wentz, Nick Foles, Zach Ertz, Trey Burton, Jordan Hicks and Chris Maragos. In the book, Cooley, a freelance sports writer, author and full-time children’s minister, tackles the issues of faith in professional football and other sports. The book includes forwards by Wentz, Foles, Ertz and others. The outdoor event will begin with tailgating in the picnic area behind the church. “We will have grills going and offer Philly food hot dogs and soft pretzels,� explained Dan Hepner, pastor of Discipleship Ministries at Hopewell UMC. After dinner and a time of fellowship, Cooley will give a talk in the church’s outdoor amphitheater, followed by a question-andanswer session. Serving as master of ceremonies of the program will be Philadelphia sports radio talk show host Chris Stigall, who will also interview Cooley during his radio program prior to the event. He added that the Eagles’ victory is still being celebrated by fans. “ When (Eagles radio announcer) Merrill Reese said, ‘Let the party begin,’ he did not think that it would be a yearlong party,� said Hepner. The Pennsylvania National Horse Show (PNHS), presented by The Lindsay Maxwell Charitable Fund, has made significant changes for this year’s show, including increased prize money and an improved schedule. The 73rd annual event is set to welcome back the nation’s top horses and riders to the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center, 2300 N. Cameron St., Harrisburg, from Thursday, Oct. 11, through Saturday, Oct. 20. With an increase of over 30 percent in prize money for the Grand Prix, a star-studded field of international horses and riders can be expected for this year’s $132,000 Grand Prix de Penn National. Prize money has also been increased to $50,000 in The PA Big Jump speed competition. All Open Jumper competitions will be conducted under Federation Equestre International (FEI)

The first Connective Art and Music Festival will take place on Saturday, Aug. 4, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. in downtown Oxford. The family-friendly event is a fundraiser hosted in partnership by Oxford Arts Alliance (OxAA) and Oxford Mainstreet Inc. (OMI). The Connective Festival aims to bring the community together through art and music. The festival’s Gallery Row will feature more than 20 juried artisans, including sculptors, printmakers, fine artists, potters, fiber artists, and jewelers. Art demonstrators will be set up throughout the festival to showcase how their art is made. Art vendors will include Lee Archer, Ethel Backenstose, Octoraro Art Association, Charles Emlen, and others. The American Cancer Society (ACS) has released new recommendations for colorectal cancer screening guidelines, including the age screenings should begin for colorectal cancer. Previously, the screening age for a person at average risk was 50. The new guidelines have reduced that age to 45. By lowering the screening age, the goal is to detect colorectal cancer earlier in patients who are at an increased risk for the disease. Even with advances in detection and treatment, colorectal cancer is the number one abdominal malignancy that affects both men and women. Roughly 1 in 20 Americans will develop this cancer, and getting a colonoscopy can help in the detection and treatment of it. Last year, the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that colon cancer rates increased from 1 percent to 2.4 percent annually since the mid-1980s among adults ages 20 to 39. For the 39 years encompassed in the study, rectal cancer rates grew 3.2 percent annually for adults ages 20 to 39. Colon and rectal cancer have, historically, affected older men and women. But the most recent research shows an increase in the number of adults in their 20s and 30s who are being diagnosed with these cancers, particularly rectal cancer. Individuals already at an increased risk for colorectal
cancer as a result of their lifestyle or family history may need to begin screenings at an earlier age. Individuals should talk to their health care provider about risk factors and what age they should begin screenings. People who are at high or increased risk for colorectal cancer can include those with a family or personal history of colon or rectal cancer or colorectal polyps; a family or personal history of other cancers, including ovarian, uterine, gastric, and breast; a history of inflammatory bowel disease; and a personal history of radiation to the abdomen or pelvic area as a result of cancer treatment. The ACS’ new guidelines also issue recommendations about colorectal cancer screening methods. While colonoscopy remains the gold standard for both the detection and treatment of colorectal cancer and precancerous polyps, other options are available. In its new guidelines, the ACS recommends choosing from six different types of screening tests. Screenings include a highly sensitive fecal immunochemical test, a highly sensitive guaiac-based fecal occult blood test, multi-targeted stool DNA tests every three years, a colonoscopy every 10 years, a virtual colonoscopy (CT colonography) every five years, and flexible sigmoidoscopy every five years. These screening recommendations are for every patient, and it does not matter which method they choose. However, if a test is positive, people should make sure to follow up See Guidelines pg 7
Junior Grange Princess from pg 1 Cassandra “Cassy” Kehs of Cochranville was named the Pennsylvania State Junior Grange Princess on July 7. Zak Persagetti of Greenville was named the Pennsylvania State Junior Grange Prince. Cassy is a member of the Russellville Junior Grange, located in Upper Oxford Township in Chester County. She has been a member of the Russellville Junior Grange since 2009 and has held a number of positions, including secretary, pomona, overseer and steward. Cassy is the daughter of Thomas and Jennifer Kehs. She attends Oxford Area High School, where she is enrolled as a sophomore. She participates in the Early College Academy program, which allows her to enroll in both high school and college classes. The program will provide her the opportunity to graduate from high school with a diploma and an associate degree. As her first act of service as the Pennsylvania State Junior Grange Princess, Cassy visited the Heritage Valley Medical Center located in Beaver on July 7 to deliver handmade thank you cards on behalf of the Pennsylvania State Junior Grange to thank the nurses and doctors. Heritage Valley Medical Center is where Cassy’s grandfather, Richard “Bapa” Sattler, had been hospitalized and treated for pneumonia from June 30 to July 6. He was able to return home on July 6. The thank you cards were distributed as a way of expressing Cassy’s appreciation for the service the staff members provide to local communities every day and specifically to thank those

She’s in it to win it,” added Ashley’s mother, Monna. “She’s very competitive and she’s a great team player.” This year, Ashley placed first at the local level in the division for 11- and 12-year-old softball players. That made her eligible to compete in the sectional-level competition, held in Caln. There, she was again the winner of her division. When the sectional scores from eastern Pennsylvania and
southern New Jersey were tallied, she was among those selected to take part in the Team Competition in Philadelphia. Pitch, Hit & Run is a free competition sponsored by Major League Baseball (MLB) and Scotts Inc. Competition is open to boys and girls ages 7 through 14 in softball and baseball. Entrants throw six balls at a target, run on the baseball diamond and hit from a tee for distance and accuracy. After local and sectional levels, each MLB team holds its own Pitch, Hit & Run competition at its stadium to select representatives to go on to the finals at the MLB All-Star Game, where the national championships of the Pitch, Hit & Run are decided. “It was fun. I liked being out on the field that the Phillies play on,” said Ashley. “ We got to warm up on the field and got to go to a game.” Ashley made a good showing in Philadelphia. Just reaching the Team Competition level it is an accomplishment and a memorable experience for the ballplayers. Approximately 650,000 children competed nationwide at the local levels, with just 700 reaching the Team Competition level as Ashley did. “It was a neat experience to see her name up on the jumbotron,” David said. “These are memories that will last a lifetime for her.” In addition to playing softball, Ashley plays basketball; is in the school band, playing clarinet; and is a member of the choral ensemble and Student Council. She likes math and social studies and hopes to attend West Chester University to study criminal justice. She loves animals, and her ultimate goal is to be a canine handler for law enforcement.

When an organization collects 40,000 books for a sale and endeavors to sell all those books in four days, drastic sales measures may be employed. The Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS) takes on such a challenge with by-the-box discounts beginning on the third day of its annual Bookworm Frolic. On the final day, the box price will be even lower. Although LMHS provides boxes, bookworms may bring their own. “The rule is for it to count, you have to be able to lift (the box of books) yourself,” explained Joel Nofziger, LMHS director of communications, who added jokingly, “Don’t bring a refrigerator box.” This year’s LMHS Bookworm Frolic will take place at LMHS, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, from Wednesday, Aug. 15, through Saturday, Aug. 18. The Frolic will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day except for Aug. 18, when the sale will close at 4 p.m. According to Jon WeaverKreider, used book manager for LMHS, who is helming this year’s sale, books that have been collected for the Frolic fit into more than 20 categories. “We have a lot of theology and religion,
history and politics,” said Weaver-Kreider, who added that he had counted 113 boxes of children’s books. Weaver-Kreider listed cookbooks, fiction, novels, and Christian fiction among the other categories that will be well represented at the sale. A number of foreign language books in German were also donated for the Frolic. While most of the books available for purchase will be set up outside the LMHS building under a tent, the music section and new books, which will be sold at special discount prices during the sale, will be located inside. Items that are not purchased are recycled to raise funds for Mennonite Central Committee Relief and Development projects. A number of volunteers help make the Bookworm Frolic a success. Weaver-Kreider calculated that 20 volunteers are needed daily to help during the sale, and that about 100 volunteers are involved in the overall event. During the year, up to 30 volunteers help sort incoming book donations. The sale attracts about 4,000 visitors annually, raising up to $40,000 for the organization. Hymns formed more than four years ago. “My husband is our lead guitarist, and he co-wrote some of the songs with me as well. He and I played in a previous band together,” she noted. “We met everybody else along the way. Cindy has been playing since the 1970s. The keyboardist was friends with my husband, and he played in another band. The drummer is very new to the band, but he is friends with our keyboardist. “We are feeling really good about our (current) lineup,” she added. Megan noted that this is the first time that the band has been part of the Honey Brook concert series. “We are looking forward to playing in Honey Brook. We have a lot of fun,” she said. Also featured in the band are Megan’s husband, Jeff Hewitt, who plays lead guitar; Alex White on drums; Robert Shuckle on keyboards; and Cindy David, who plays bass and sings harmony vocals. During the upcoming concert, audience members can expect to hear a mix of modern folk and Americana with touches of jazz, pop and improvisational rock ’n’ roll. “We occasionally do a few classic cover songs from the ’60s and ’70s, but for the most part we sing originals, which are folksy with jazz and mellow rock ’n’ roll influences,” said Megan. The group released its second album of original music, “This Burning Love,” in November 2016 and is currently completing the recording of its third album of original music. “We play a lot of festivals. We like playing outside, and it’s fun,” said Megan. “ We don’t play (clubs) because our music is more mellow.” Megan said attendees will enjoy clapping and dancing along to the music. “We call it folk, but it has a pop element,” she stated. “It is catchy, and we have a good rhythm. We (perform) some songs with an old-timey jazz feel, so it’s fun to dance to for sure.” Megan said that she has been playing her original music for about 10 years and that The Wild

Hunter Travels To Costa Rica Tracy Hunter of Oxford traveled to Costa Rica from May 12 to 21 as part of an interdisciplinary course called Coffee Culture and the Environment in Costa Rica. Hunter is a senior biochemistry and environmental science major at Widener University, Chester.
During the spring semester, Hunter learned about the three dimensions of sustainable development - environmental, economic and social - through an examination of coffee production in Central America. The course culminated in the study abroad trip in May.

Two United States Army veterans who served together during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II have continued their friendship for more than 70 years. Eugene Morell, 92, was only 18 when the battle took place, and Ira Needham, 99, was 25. The pair recently met in person when Morell traveled from New York with his granddaughter and her family to meet with Needham in his home in Honey Brook. The two spent the day together sharing snacks and beverages and reminiscing about their time together in the war. “We were on a 105 Howitzer together,” said Needham, explaining that the large piece of artillery was brought into battle on the back of a truck. “We are the only two left from our outfit.” “There were five us that operated the Howitzer,” said Morell. “Ira wore earphones, and orders came down from headquarters to shoot. We fired as fast as we could. That was the very beginning of the Battle of the Bulge.” The battle was also called the Battle of the Ardennes because it took place in the Ardennes forest region of Belgium, France and Luxembourg. During the Battle of the Bulge, which lasted from Dec. 16, 1944, through Jan. 16, 1945, the Army was assigned to cover a 27-mile front that was being attacked by German soldiers. The battle was a surprise attack on the Allies by the Germans, who created a “bulge” in the Allied front line. “A division normally covers a 5- or 6-mile front, but we were covering a 27mile front. Hitler surprised us, and we were not ready,” Morell explained. “They call it the Battle of the Bulge because Hitler pushed us way back along that line, creating a bulge. We lost 7,000 men in one day - as prisoners or killed (in action).” “We were fresh from the United States,” Needham added, noting that his division had arrived in the area to relieve another outfit on Dec. 10, 1944. “They knew we were a green outfit.
That is why they waited to start the Battle of the Bulge. We were scared to death. We had never been in combat before.” Both men remember being fired upon by German soldiers. “They had an 88-shell gun, and it could shoot almost twice the (number) of shells that we could shoot,” Needham said. “You got to that (point where) you could hear the shells coming through the air.” “They had a shell called the ‘Screaming Mimi,’” Morell added. “It made so much noise coming in it would disrupt (our efforts). It was the first thing we heard at the beginning of the battle. We heard artillery, but nothing like this. It made a terrible noise. We had to pull ourselves together and keep shooting.” At one point in the battle, Needham got separated from Morell and the others and got lost with three other men in the forest of the Ardennes mountains. “It had snowed for a week, and the snow was up to our knees,” he recalled. “We (were freezing).” Eventually, the group made it back to safety. Morell and Needham, the latter of whom returned to his job at Lukens Steel in Coatesville, served until the end of the war because they were single. Married men with children were the first to be sent home. “We were discharged by a point system. For a wife, you (received) five points. For kids, it was five points each,” Morell said. “We were young, single men who had to stay because we didn’t have any points. The married men were all going home.” Both men credit their faith for helping them survive the ordeal. “God was with us,” Needham said. Needham’s daughter, Robin Sinapi, who resides with him in Honey Brook, said that this was the third meeting for the two friends. “They have met only twice before,” she said. “The first time was about 55 years ago. The last time was about four years ago; I took Dad to New York to visit Eugene. But they have been writing letters for years. “(Having my dad in my life) is a blessing,” she added.
