If a Ghost from Christmas Past came to visit today, he may not be familiar with some of the new practices that have become commonplace in today’s world. In days gone by - I am now old enough to use that phrase - the Christmas season began on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. Back then, we did not see holiday displays in the stores on Halloween or even earlier. Black Friday was when stores like K-Mart held special sales that began at 5 or 6 a.m. That is when you visited the store to grab a $49 VCR or a $99 25-inch television. The news shows on Black Friday morning were filled with scenes of people storming into a store or a shopping mall to grab a bargain. To d ay, m a ny p e o p l e choose to shop online. Some malls have even closed because people

and visiting the Christmas tree farm to choose just the right one. After the usual struggle of getting that tree into the stand, then comes dealing with the tangled strings of light. And no matter how careful we are in the previous year, there are always one or two ornaments that just don’t make it. Even after testing, it is inevitable that one rebellious light string on the tree goes dark. That means searching for a missing bulb or the one faulty bulb that causes all the other lights to not work. Of course, Christmas is about the birth of Jesus, and Christians everywhere attend services on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, and their spirits are lifted by the sacred music and the spirit of celebration. Technology again plays a role since those who are
unable to make it to church can attend ser vices via livestream. So Christmas Past may not be familiar with a world where shopping is done with a click, where we use phone apps, where we send digital greetings instead of actual Christmas cards, where we use streaming ser vices for music and entertainment and where children can monitor Santa’s progress around the world on the NORAD Santa app. But what remains the same is that Christmas is a time of giving, spending time with family and friends and embracing that general sense of wonder and magic. And, hopefully, next year there will be no broken ornaments and no tangled Christmas lights and every bulb on the string will shine brightly.

While growing up, the King of Prussia Mall was the place to go at Christmastime with the elaborate decorations and a huge selection of stores where we could do our Christmas shopping. It was a bit of a hike for us from our home, but we made a day of it, shopping and then eating in the mall’s food court. A store back then called Korvettes was one of the first stores in the area to have an escalator, and we kids would take endless rides on it. We were completely fascinated by those moving stairs. Of course, we still decorate today as we did in the past, but now there are prelit artificial trees that you can buy online, and you can synchronize the lights with an app. Many people, however, prefer a live tree
Those seeking a quiet and simple ceremony to celebrate Christmas are invited to attend a Contemplative Christmas Eve program on Wednesday, Dec. 24, from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Sadsbury Friends Meeting House. The program will feature readings, brief periods of silent worship and music by the Krebs family. “The father, Matthew, plays the piano, and the daughter Anika is the singer,” explained meeting member Connie Webster. “(The service) will alternate between music, reading and periods of silence.” There will also be congregational candle lighting. The focus of the readings will be from “The Other Wise Man,” adapted from the novel by Henry van Dyke. The book tells the story of Artaban, a wise man from Persia, who never makes it to pay homage to the baby Jesus along with the other three wise men. However, he spends his life searching for Jesus,

performing acts of service along his journey. “Three or four of us will read the story in parts,” noted Webster. “We pared it down to be shorter. The whole (Christmas Eve) program, including the music, will be an hour.” Refreshments will be served in the community room following the service. According to www.sads buryfriendsmeeting.org, the service is designed as a “contrast to the modern
consumer culture that surrounds the Christmas season.” The fireplace will be lit in the meetinghouse for the occasion, and the entire event will take place by candlelight. “The meetinghouse was constructed in 1747, making it one of the oldest houses of worship in Lancaster County,” noted Webster. Local Service That Makes a Difference Affordable Insurance
Several years ago, Jim Weagley of Atglen had a melody and lyrics in his head, but with no musical expertise, he could not find a way to bring them to life. That is when Lancaster County musician Juliana Lane came into the picture and together the two strangers produced a song, “Do You Believe? (The Christmas Story).” Weagley, who retired from the field of sports medicine, is the author of several books, including “Bet on the Turtle: My Long, Slow Journey of Faith.” After coming up with the tune, he s e a rche d on l i ne a nd found Lane, who is the worship leader at Manheim Grace Church. “I had the tune and lyrics and started looking on the internet to see if I could find a singer/ songwriter and producer in the Lancaster area,” Weagley explained. “I love music, but don’t play an instrument and I can’t read music and I have no musical ability. I sent me singing my song a cappella. I asked them to not judge my voice, but to judge the song based on what they think it could be.” Enter Lane, who provides vocals and plays
the piano on the recently released song. “I have been writing songs since I was 11 years old,” she said. “I had not met (Weagley) before, but he came across my website and music online.

She explained that accompanying musicians did not gather to play the song; rather they contributed their parts via online audio files. “I gave notes to each musician of what I was looking for them to play, and they sent me their files and we collaborated online digitally,” she said. “I recorded my piano and vocals in my studio, and for all the other musicians, we collaborated over Zoom.” T he y each had their own studios and they each recorded their parts. I had to mix everything and piece everything together.” Today, the song is completed and ready for people

It surprised me, but it ended up being a really cool collaboration.” Lane sang the song and added instrumentation, including violins, guitar and flute. “He sent me an audio file of him singing the tune, and I ended up taking that and fully producing it and turning it into what it is now,” she stated. “I am a self-taught musician, and I mostly play by ear. I took what he had and developed chords around it.” The process of producing the song took nearly a year to complete. “I met with (Lane) initially last July (of 2024). I told her to take her time,” said Weagley. “She would send me a version of her simply singing and playing piano, and bit by bit instruments were added in.” “It is a very long process,” Lane added. “We go through sourcing the song and the

The grant process, which was initiated by a local supporter and volunteer of NSI, took about four months to complete. After B.J.’s Wholesale Club invited NSI to apply for the grant, NSI composed a formal grant proposal and submitted it, after which the request was granted. “It’s a big part of our annual budget and a grant we haven’t gotten before,” said Clark. “To have a local tie to a national business is meaningful. I’d say that it’s larger than average. It’s a really big deal to us.” “B.J.’s has a deep commitment to supporting families in the communities where we live and work,” said Kirk Saville, B.J.’s Wholesale Club’s head of corporate communications. “We are honored to continue supporting the organizations our team members care about most and to live our purpose of taking care of families who depend on us.” W ith assistance and input from C lark , NSI development director April Miller wrote and composed the B.J.’s Wholesale Club grant application in about six hours. To this point of 2025, NSI has applied for 13 total financial grants, five of which were approved and four of which were
declined, while the status of the other four have yet to be determined. NSI is planning to apply for three more grants before the end of the year. “A pr il was pr imar ily responsible for this B.J.’s W holesale Club grant,” said Clark. “We want to make sure it’s a match. In B.J.’s case, we were recommended to them; they invited us to provide an extensive application of what the money would be used for. We had to be clear we were doing things that fit their purposes. By their bylaws, they have to make donations. We have to be a committed nonprofit doing good work in a cause. We want human trafficking to end. If we can show we’re truly making a difference, we’re also providing an opportunity that grant makers are looking for.” Grants represent about 10% of NSI’s annual operating budget. The largest source of NSI’s funding about 50% - comes from the local community, including business donations, private donations and fundraising efforts. Typically, the grants that NSI receives range between $3,000 and $50,000. “ T h e re a re s o m a ny grant-making entities,” said Clark, a resident of East Hempfield Township. “There are a lot of philanthropists who have some funds and are looking for specific causes. They have a heart to be generous to the causes that matter to them. It’s become compet-
itive because there are so many nonprofits. Sadsbury Friends from pg 2 meetinghouse was built in 1725. A larger meetinghouse, the present stone building, was built in 1747. Members of the Friends took part in anti-slavery activities using their homes as “stations” of the Underground Railroad. They were also active in the Christiana Resistance of 1851 and during the time of the Civil War. A schoolhouse once existed on the property but was torn down when the public road was straightened in 1907. At one time, Maple Grove Mennonites used the meeting as a place to gather. In 1974, Sadsbur y Meeting was remodeled again, and the downstairs community room was created. Those who have never
visited the Quaker meetinghouse will notice that the building has a partition in the middle of the main floor, dividing it into two rooms. “ They used to have separate men’s and women’s business meetings, so they made these movable partitions,” Webster explained. “They are in the center of the building.
