Because of the pandemic, Impact Church in Parkesburg will host outdoor activities for the community to enjoy as a way to celebrate the Christmas season. A drive-through Nativity will be held at the church, located at 101 E. First Ave., Parkesburg. The Nativity opened on Dec. 15 and will run from 5 to 10 p.m. each night through Thursday, Dec. 31. As they drive past the six Nativity scenes, visitors will be able to use their smartphones to visit w w w. i m p a c t p a . c h u r c h , where they will be able to listen to the narration of the Christmas story told from the perspective of children. “(Visitors) can click on the main page of our website, and that will direct
them to a video on YouTube and it will ex plain each scene and the significance of it,” explained lead pastor Mike Bailey. He ex plained that the video will feature narration recorded by children from Impact Church. The final scene will end at the church’s decorated 14-foot Christmas tree. “(The scenes will feature) life-size white silhouettes and there will spotlights that shine on them,” said Bailey. “The scenes will be on the back side of the church property. There will be cones, directions and signs of where to go. The last scene will end at the cross and the tree. (The Nativity is designed) to tell the story about the real reason for the season.” “We want people to drive by and, if they smile, then we have done our job,” he added. “This is something

Work Of County Prison Honored Safe Schools Grants The County Commissioners received the Best Practices Awarded Association of Pennsylvania Award in the Large County Jail (CCAP) recently announced awards for Pennsylvania county leaders and organizations that have enhanced the wellbeing of counties and residents. CCAP’s Affiliate of the Year Award was presented to the Association of Eastern Pennsylvania County Election Personnel and the Western Pennsylvania Election Personnel Association for administering challenging elections issues, including significant changes to the Election Code, managing the voter registration process, finding and training poll workers, deploying voting machines, and counting and certifying election results. Father John Celebrates 100th Birthday

Father John Van de Paer, who previously served at Our Lady of Consolation (OLC) Parish in Parkesburg, was recently honored on his 100th birthday with a parade in Arlington., Va., where he now lives. Born in Belgium on Nov. 29, 1920, Van de Paer, known affectionately as Father John, was ordained a priest with the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1947. His missionary work led him to the United States a year later, where he worked in the St. Cyprian Parish in Columbus, Ohio, from 1948 to 1952. He later served at St. Charles Borromeo Parish in Philadelphia from 1952 to 1995 and at OLC from 1996 to 2014 before retiring. Former parishioners made Van De Paer’s birthday memorable on Nov. 29 by organizing a drive-through event with decorated cars passing by Missionhurst provincial house, Van de Paer’s retirement home. Many in the parade, including children, presented gifts and cards to the priest as he sat on a bench in front of the facility. Later in the day, he also enjoyed songs and video chats with former parishioners. Locally, a special tribute book, “Amazing Grace: A Journey of Love,” was

Make Good Use Of The Christmas Tree After The Holidays Many families have chosen to display a live Christmas tree this season, which means more trees will be disposed of after the holidays. However, people are encouraged not to throw their real Christmas tree into the trash. Rather, trees can be reused or recycled in other ways, such as for mulch or to create a bird feeder. After all decorations, hooks, garland and tinsel strands have been removed, homeowners can place the tree in their backyards for the birds. “My favorite way to recycle your real tree is as a bird feeder,� said Dawn White, education director at the Green Valleys Association at Welkin-
weir. “You can lay the tree on (the ground) or stand the tree in the ground and decorate it with strung peanuts, popcorn or cranberries to attract a variety of birds.� People may make additional edible “ornaments� for the tree. “You can make pinecone bird feeders with peanut butter or vegetable shortening rolled in birdseed, then hang them on the tree,� White said. Although the pandemic has been challenging for the food service supply chain, Sonya said that worker safety has always been the business’s top priority. These individuals or groups persevered in the face of unprecedented use and difficulties to make outdoor recreation opportunities available during the pandemic. Nominations are due by Thursday, Dec. 31. Nominations are encouraged for awards to volunteers, friends’ groups, organizations, parks/forests staff members, business owners, medical providers, or elected or

The Chester County commissioners, along with the Chester County Agricultural Development Council (Ag Council), recently presented the Farmers of the Year Award and the Duncan Allison Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award. The presentations took place at First Generation Farms in Avondale. The 2020 Chester County Farmers of the Year Award was bestowed upon Sonya Beltran and her family, owner-operators of First Generation Farms. The Beltran family grows white and cremini mushrooms for restaurant and food service customers up and down the East Coast. Sonya was initially nominated on her own for the award by the American Mushroom Institute for excellence as a mushroom grower and industry advocate. Upon receiving notice of the nomination, she requested that her family also be recognized. Sonya’s parents, Daniel and Maria Beltran, came to the area from Jalisco, Mexico, in 1980. Daniel worked his way up through the mushroom industry until he was able to buy his own mushroom houses and start the business now known as First Generation Farms and Masda Mushrooms. The Beltrans’ farm now encompasses over 50 growing rooms with an average production of about 11 million pounds of fresh mushrooms a year. Sonya, the eldest of Daniel and Maria’s three children, officially joined the business eight years ago and is currently the director of operations, overseeing worker safety, product marketing and sales.

Parkesburg Residents Invited To Light Up The Night BY FRANCINE FULTON
Parkesburg residents are invited to light up the night on Christmas Eve, Thursday, Dec. 24, by lining the streets and walkways with luminarias. Residents are asked to have the luminarias lit by 6:30 p.m. when Santa starts making his rounds on the back of a Keystone Valley Fire Department (KVFD) fire truck. “It would be really nice to (have everyone) participate,”
said event organizer April Kenworthy-Brade, a member of the Parkesburg Parks and Recreation Commission. “This year, more than ever, we want to get everybody out and celebrate in a safe way.” Residents may make their own luminarias or purchase a kit from Belly Giggle Creations, a Parkesburg business that is offering ready-to-go kits. “People can use a white or brown paper lunch sack, (fill it with) sand and put some sort of votive candle in there or a short candle,” Kenworthy-Brade explained. For safety reasons, she noted, candles should not be lit in the event of extremely windy weather on Christmas Eve. According to the KVFD, Santa has been visiting Parkesburg on Christmas Eve for more than 60 years. This year, in order to ensure that the entire borough is cov-
ered, the south side of the borough will be handled by one Santa, while the northside and outlying areas has been assigned to another Santa. Residents should practice social distancing throughout the evening and wear a mask if they are outside with others not from the same household. “(The luminaria) will be

Those soulful eyes may tempt pet owners to give in to their begging critters, but sharing the feast prepared for humans can lead to trouble for pets. Too much rich, fatty food or simply new, unfamiliar foods can upset a pet’s stomach and even cause pancreatitis, which can be lifethreatening, so owners should go easy on the tidbits. Poultry or ham bones can break up or splinter in a pet’s stomach and be deadly, so dogs and cats should never be allowed to gnaw on them, and bones, as well as other food trash, should go outside to the trash immediately. Other food-flavored items like plastic wrap, string, mesh, or popup timers can smell tempting to curious pets, but they can cause injury to their stomachs if ingested. Chocolate, especially that used for baking, is toxic for dogs, so it should be kept out of reach. Other common food items that can be poisonous to dogs include onions, raisins, grapes, eggnog, and fruitcake so avoid sharing these. It is a good idea to review these rules with any guests as
the potential harm caused by slipping treats to the pets under the table. If pet owners want to make the holiday special for their four-footed family members, they should plan ahead and have safe, delicious dog and cat treats on hand, like canned pet food, tasty pet treats or a fun toy. There are also many recipes online for homemade dog and cat treats that are fun to make and extra special for pets. Additionally, the water a Christmas tree sits in is a breeding ground for bacteria; keep water covered with a thick skirt so pets can’t get into it. Tape electrical cords safely to the wall and make sure that all electrical connections, batteries, and outlets are concealed. Tinsel, ribbon, metal hooks, plastic, and glass can obstruct or perforate the intestine if ingested, so pet owners should use an alternative such as paper and hang decorations out of reach from pets. Quickly dispose of wrapping paper, packages, and bows after opening presents and put children’s toys out of reach of pets after playtime to avoid
accidental ingestion. Make sure pets’ identification and microchips are up to date in case anyone inadvertently leaves the door open during a holiday celebration. A final note to consider is that many common decorative plants and flowers can be toxic for curious cats and dogs. Before buying plants or creating the centerpiece, it is wise to check that anything that could poison pets is not present. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, plant hazards include amaryllis, baby’s breath, sweet William, some ferns, hydrangeas, lilies, holly, mistletoe, and poinsettias. Some symptoms that a pet has become ill and should be taken to a veterinarian quickly include prolonged vomiting (more than three times in a row), dry heaves, a distended abdomen, sudden weakness or inability to stand, respiratory distress, change in gum color, and/or seizures. The holiday season brings families together, but it also means added distractions for the many people working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Working from home creates a different psychological vibe from the all-business environment of a brick-and-mortar office setting, and that feeling is magnified during the holidays according to Cynthia Spraggs, author and long-time remote worker. She is the CEO of Virtira, a completely virtual company that helps other businesses work virtually. She said that the holidays bring new challenges to getting work done efficiently at home, and at the same time, employers have concerns about how the holidays can affect workers’ productivity in a home setting. Spraggs offers tips to employees and employers about working from home productively
during the holidays. Employees can overcome holiday distractions by creating a mental commute and brain warm-up, creating must-do lists, and keeping their office space a quiet place. Employees working from home should create a morning routine to help clear the mind and prepare for the working mindset. The drive to the office may have previously created a mental separation between home life and work life and have given the worker space and time to prepare for the day. A similar separation time is vital at home, especially in a holiday atmosphere, in order to focus on the work tasks ahead. Workers are encouraged to develop a routine, such as reading or exercise, that warms up their brain. Employees are encouraged to create must-do lists. The holidays are filled with gift lists, parties, family obligations, baking plans, and other tasks that

Managers should plan daily check-ins. Remote managers should establish either a daily one-on-one call or team call with their employees. In the holiday season, extra efforts should be made in communication to compensate for people taking time off. A regular routine of calls provides a forum for the employees to consult with the manager and each other, and the manager can track performance in real time. Managers are encouraged to set holiday goals and rewards. Quarterly goals can be augmented by special holiday goals and rewards for meeting them. These rewards incentivize working diligently at home during the holidays.
