For the past nine years, David’s Drive 831 (DD831), a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of veterans, has held a Christmas Gift Wrapping Extravaganza at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, where volunteers wrapped 1,000 gift boxes containing personal care items, snacks and more that were distributed to veterans. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, however, DD831 was forced to cancel the event. Instead, the charity is collecting gifts that will be distributed by VA staff members to homebound veterans and those who reside at the VA center, as well as to veterans who are part of the VA’s homeless outreach program. “What we are forced to do this year is buy products, send them to the VA and they will distribute them to veterans,” said David Turner Sr., founder and president of DD831. “Because of COVID ... we will not put (our volunteers) at risk, so all items will be presented to veterans with the highest regard for safety.” Turner explained that homebound

veterans living in the community will receive a tin of cookies, and inpatients living on the VA campus will get a canteen book, which is a coupon book that they can use to purchase items in the VA canteen. Walmart gift cards will be given out to veterans in the HUD-VASH (Housing and Urban Development VA Support Housing) program. Residents are invited to write personal cards or letters to be included with the gifts. “We would like to encourage (people) to write a letter to a veteran, wish them a happy holiday or just share a personal story,” Turner stated. “Let them know that the community is thinking of them.” Cards and letters should be mailed to DD831, 1 Somerset Drive, Coatesville, PA 19320. Monetary donations will also be accepted, which will also help the charity to purchase items in bulk at a discount. DD831 is named for David Turner

The 831 symbolizes the phrase “I love you,” because the phrase contains eight letters in three words that have one meaning. Boy Scout Troop 20 in Atglen, composed of boys who reside in the Pequea Valley and Octorara Area school districts, held its autumn Court of Honor on Oct. 5, during which Scouts were recognized for their achievements. The ceremony was held in the outdoor pavilion behind the Penningtonville Presbyterian Church in Atglen, where the troop meets. During the Court of Honor, 18 Scouts were awarded 105 merit badges. Funds raised at the event were used to purchase a sound system for the Octorara field hockey team, of which Carly was a member, among other school needs. Donna said that 2019 marked the final running of the event. “We did that five years in a row. I know that we made a difference,” she stated. “We are still planning to do things for the school. This year we are going to install a sound system for the softball team (facility).” She noted that Carly was also a member of the softball team. In January, Donna and Matt Imbierowicz presented 102 carbon monoxide detectors to the Cochranville Fire Department. The family also bred Carly’s English mastiff, named Malachi, resulting in 11 puppies, all of which were adopted by local families. Donna nicknamed the puppies CO Awareness Angels. Malachi was on hand when Dinniman presented the citation. Carbon monoxide is called the “silent killer” because it is colorless, odorless and tasteless and cannot be detected by humans without the help of an alarm or detector. Residents are advised to install carbon monoxide detectors in sleeping areas along with smoke detectors and to check the detectors’ batteries twice a year. Other tips include the following: never use a stove or oven to heat a home; never run generators in an enclosed space, such as a basement or garage; be sure that all fuel-burning appliances and engines, like space heaters, furnaces, charcoal grills, fireplaces, portable generators, water heaters and wood-burning stoves, are properly vented; clean chimneys and flues every year; open the garage door before starting the car; and never leave cars running with the garage door closed. Additionally, the Scouts have kept up their Adopt-A-Highway cleanup commitment and they took part in the annual Scouting for Food drive. “This year, we hung door hangers (asking for donations) on one Saturday and the following Saturday we picked up what (canned goods they) left out for us,” noted Zink. “We (collected) three beds of pickup trucks full of food.” The food was donated to the Octorara Area Food Cupboard. The troop is looking forward to a snow tubing outing in December and to a full year of activities

“The troop normally goes to Camp Rodney in Maryland but back in June we made the decision not go,” said Zink. “The Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster and parent committee worked to create a pseudo summer camp at Hickory Run. We did an extended weekend, where the Scouts were able to camp, earn merit badges and work on rank requirements and skills.” The troop also kept busy with weekend camping trips at Jim Landis Woodland Preserve and Rickett’s Glen State Park and a merit badge weekend at Camp Mack in Newmanstown.
